The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic efficiency of plain film and spiral CT examinations with 3D reconstructions of 42 tibial plateau fractures and to assess the accuracy of these two techniques in the pre-operative surgical plan in 22 cases. Forty-two tibial plateau fractures were examined with plain film (anteroposterior, lateral, two obliques) and spiral CT with surface-shaded-display 3D reconstructions. The Swiss AO-ASIF classification system of bone fracture from Muller was used. In 22 cases the surgical plans and the sequence of reconstruction of the fragments were prospectively determined with both techniques, successively, and then correlated with the surgical reports and post-operative plain film. The fractures were underestimated with plain film in 18 of 42 cases (43%). Due to the spiral CT 3D reconstructions, and precise pre-operative information, the surgical plans based on plain film were modified and adjusted in 13 cases among 22 (59%). Spiral CT 3D reconstructions give a better and more accurate demonstration of the tibial plateau fracture and allows a more precise pre-operative surgical plan.

Actualmente, o tráfego e o estacionamento assumem um papel fundamental enquanto elementos indissociáveis da vida em meios urbanos. Assim, uma gestão do tráfego e estacionamento capaz de minimizar os impactos negativos é de grande importância para organização do espaço urbano. Esta dissertação apresenta uma análise dos problemas de estacionamento vinculado ao tráfego na zona de Plateau na Cidade da Praia. O método utilizado para a realização deste trabalho baseou-se numa pesquisa bibliográfica de vários aspectos sobre o estacionamento, trabalho de campo com a recolha de dados sobre ocupação de vagas que depois de tratados foram devidamente analisados. O presente trabalho tem como objectivo principal estudar a oferta, a procura e as condições de estacionamento, bem como a sua relação com os equipamentos mais relevantes na zona de Plateau. Por isso, foi desenvolvido uma pesquisa sobre o estacionamento abordado por vários autores para servir de apoio na recolha dos dados necessários para análises posteriores. Primeiramente, foram organizadas as informações disponíveis na literatura consultada sobre vários conceitos ligados ao estacionamento. Foram ainda consultadas informações sobre os Pólos Geradores de Tráfego, sua localização e o seu impacto no estacionamento, medidas para reduzir a demanda, a dimensão de estacionamento, a rotatividade e ocupação de estacionamento, a sinalização de trânsito ligado ao estacionamento e normas sobre o estacionamento em Cabo Verde. O terceiro capítulo deste trabalho faz uma caracterização da Cidade da Praia e do Plateau, enquadrado na Ilha de Santiago e em Cabo Verde. Os dados recolhidos permitiram concluir que a zona de Plateau não sofreu nenhuma alteração em termos de infra-estrutura rodoviária desde a sua criação. Plateau dispõe de um grande número de Pólos Geradores de Tráfego, que reflecte na X procura de vagas de estacionamento. A evolução do parque automóvel em Santiago contribui para o agravamento das condições do estacionamento. A zona de Plateau dispõe de vagas de estacionamento ao longo das vias, com uma taxa de ocupação média de 90,11% e uma rotatividade das vagas igual a 2,92. A área de estudo dispõe de um total de 1202 vagas com 61,27% de estacionamento de longa duração. Plateau está bem apetrechada com a sinalização vertical mas, com um défice de sinalização horizontal. No Plateau há necessidade de fazer uma gestão da procura de vagas começando com um rigoroso controlo na ocupação de vagas e no futuro com introdução de outras medidas, para diminuir a demanda. As zonas mais críticas de estacionamento, ocorrem na Avenida Amílcar Cabral, nas Ruas Visconde São Januário, Saldanha Lobo e Tenente Valadin e no Largo do Liceu Domingos Ramos. Para reduzir a demanda no Plateau pode-se recorrer a várias medidas com destaque para a introdução do sistema de estacionamento rotativo pago em algumas vias e restrição à circulação de automóveis. No Plateau aparecem muitos veículos mal estacionados devido a um deficiente serviço de fiscalização.

The oceanic crust fragments exposed in central America, in north-western South America, and in the Caribbean islands have been considered to represent accreted remnants of the Caribbean-Colombian Oceanic Plateau (CCOP). On the basis of trace element and Nd, Sr, and Pb isotopic compositions we infer that cumulate rocks, basalts, and diabases from coastal Ecuador have a different source than the basalts from the Dominican Republic. The latter suite includes the 86 Ma basalts of the Duarte Complex which are light rare earth element (REE) -enriched and display (relative to normal mid-ocean ridge basalts, NMORB) moderate enrichments in large ion lithophile elements, together with high Nb, Ta, Pb, and low Th contents. Moreover, they exhibit a rather restricted range of Nd and Pb isotopic ratios consistent with their derivation from an ocean island-type mantle source, the composition of which includes the HIMU (high U-238/Pb-204) component characteristic of the Galapagos hotspot. In contrast, the 123 Ma Ecuadorian oceanic rocks have flat REE patterns and (relative to NMORB) are depleted in Zr, Hf, Th, and U. Moreover, they show a wide range of Nd and Pb isotopic ratios intermediate between those of ocean island basalts and NMORB. It is unlikely, on geochemical grounds, that the plume source of the Ecuadorian fragments was similar to that of the Galapagos. In addition, because of the NNE motion of the Farallon plate during the Early Cretaceous, the Ecuadorian oceanic plateau fragments could not have been derived from the Galapagos hotspot but were likely formed at a ridge-centered or near-ridge hotspot somewhere in the SE Pacific.

The eastern part of the Cordillera Occidental of Ecuador comprises thick buoyant oceanic plateaus associated with island-arc tholeiites and subduction-related calc-alkaline series, accreted to the Ecuadorian Continental Margin from Late Cretaceous to Eocene times. One of these plateau sequences, the Guaranda Oceanic Plateau is considered as remnant of the Caribbean-Colombian Oceanic Province (CCOP) accreted to the Ecuadorian Margin in the Maastrichtien. Samples studied in this paper were taken from four cross-sections through two arc-sequences in the northern part of the Cordillera Occidental of Ecuador, dated as (Rio Cala) or ascribed to (Macuchi) the Late Cretaceous and one arc-like sequence in the Chogon-Colonche Cordillera (Las Orquideas). These three island-arcs can clearly be identified and rest conformably on the CCOP. In all four localities, basalts with abundant large clinopyroxene phenocrysts can be found, mimicking a picritic or ankaramitic facies. This mineralogical particularity, although not uncommon in island arc lavas, hints at a contribution of the CCOP in the genesis of these island arc rocks. The complete petrological and geochemical study of these rocks reveals that some have a primitive island-arc nature (MgO values range from 6 to 11 wt.%). Studied samples display marked Nb, Ta and Ti negative anomalies relative to the adjacent elements in the spidergrams characteristic of subductionrelated magmatism. These rocks are LREE-enriched and their clinopyroxenes show a tholeiitic affinity (FeO(1)-TiO(2) enrichment and CaO depletion from core to rim within a single crystal). The four sampled cross-sections through the island-arc sequences display homogeneous initial Nd, and Pb isotope ratios that suggest a unique mantellic source for these rocks resulting from the mixing of three components: an East-Pacific MORB end-member, an enriched pelagic sediment component, and a HIMU component carried by the CCOP. Indeed, the ankaramite and Mg-basalt sequences that form part of the Caribbean-Colombian Oceanic Plateau are radiogenically enriched in (206)Pb/(204)Pb and (207)Pb/(204)Pb and contain a HIMU component similar to that observed in the Gorgona basalts and Galapagos lavas. The subduction zone that generated the Late Cretaceous arcs occurred far from the continental margin, in an oceanic environment. This implies that no terrigenous detrital sediments interacted with the source at this period. Thus, the enriched component can only result from the melting of subducted pelagic sediments. We have thus defined the East-Pacific MORB, enriched (cherts, pelagic sediments) and HIMU components in an attempt to constrain and model the genesis of the studied island-arc magmatism, using a compilation of carefully selected isotopic data from literature according to rock age and paleogeographic location at the time of arc edification. Tripolar mixing models reveal that proportions of 12-15 wt.% of the HIMU component, 7-15 wt.% of the pelagic sediment end-member and 70-75 wt.% of an East-pacific MORB end-member are needed to explain the measured isotope ratios. These surprisingly high proportions of the HIMU/CCOP component could be explained by the young age of the oceanic plateau (5-15 Ma) during the Late Cretaceous arc emplacement. The relation between the properties and the water content of an undisturbed loess were investigated to provide insight into the mechanical behavior of the natural soil. Hand-carved samples from a single deposit, at their natural water contents, and at water contents modified in the laboratory to provide a range from 870 to 3270, were subjected to unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests, consolidation tests, and initial negative pore water pressure tests. In addition, the clay-size fraction was separated from the remainder of the loess for a separate series of tests to establish its properties. The natural water content of the deposit in the field was measured at regular intervals for one year to provide an example of the range in properties that would be encountered. at this site. The test results are presented and their interpretation leads to conclusions regarding the volumetric relations that exist as the water content varies. The significance of the water content in relation to the properties of the natural soil is explored and the concept of a critical water content for loess is introduced.

Determination of the sub-chondral bone density, or more precisely the internal density spot, can be used to evaluate the capability of a knee to sustain normal kinematics. To use this technique as a mean of knee kinematics control, the position of the internal density spot must be determined in a reproducible way. This paper presents a definition of an intrinsic polar coordinate system, allowing to measure the position of the internal density spot of the tibial plateau. Tests of reproducibility gave good results and justify the use of this coordinate system for comparison of the internal density spot position between left and right paired knees.

A precise classification and an optimal understanding of tibial plateau fractures are the basis of a conservative treatment or adequate surgery. The aim of this prospective study is to determine the contribution of 3D CT to the classification of fractures (comparison with standard X-rays) and as an aid to the surgeon in preoperative planning and surgical reconstruction. Between November 1994 and July 1996, 20 patients presenting 22 tibial plateau fractures were considered in this study. They all underwent surgical treatment. The fractures were classified according to the Müller AO classification. They were all investigated by means of standard X-rays (AP, profile, oblique) and the 3D CT. Analysis of the results has shown the superiority of 3D CT in the planning (easier and more acute), in the classification (more precise), and in the exact assessment of the lesions (quantity of fragments); thereby proving to be of undeniable value of the surgeon.
A Progress Report on Treating Loess, Fine Sands and Soft Limestones with Liquid Binders, HR-20, 1954

Certain areas of Iowa abound in loess, others contain soft limestones that are readily and cheaply available, and a large portion of the state is underlaid with sand. None of these materials is considered suitable in present practices for use in all-weather road construction. The loess is too fine and too difficult to handle; the limestones are considered too soft, and some of the harder ones unsound for this use; the sands are not naturally of the desired gradation and do not lend themselves to blending into satisfactory gradations. The purpose of this project is, therefore, to study and develop means and to determine the feasibility of using these materials, loess, fine sand, and soft limestones, either separately or in combinations in conjunction with liquid binders to produce paving mixtures applicable for all-weather road construction. Also included in the project was the development of methods of processing any of these materials, if necessary, to make them suitable for the desired purpose
