Geographical distributions of effort and catches of tunas by purse-seine vessels in the Eastern Pacific Ocean during 1965-1998

ENGLISH: This report presents fine-scale spatial summaries of annual catch and effort information compiled by the IATTC staff. These data summaries are presented in a graphical format, and display only information collected from purse-seine vessels fishing in the eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO) during 1965-1998. Data collected from baitboat and longline vessels fishing in the EPO are not considered in this report. Equivalent data from Japanese longline vessels fishing in the EPO are presented by Uosaki and Bayliff(1999) for 1988-1992 and by' references cited in that publication for 1956-1987. SPANISH: Este informe presenta resúmenes espaciales a escala fina de información sobre captura y esfuerzo anuales compilada por el personal de la CIAT. Se presentan los resúmenes en formato gráfico, e incluyen solamente información tomada de barcos cerqueros pescando en el Océano Pacifico oriental (OPO) durante 1965-1998. No se consideran en el informe datos provenientes de barcos de camada y palangreros que pescan en el OPO. Se presentan datos equivalentes de barcos palangreros japoneses pescando en el OPO en Uosaki y Bayliff (1999) para 1988-1992 yen las referencias citadas en dicha publicación para 1956-1987. Report of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission for the year 1965

ENGLISH: The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission has been assigned the task, under the Convention which created it, of gathering and interpreting factual information to facilitate the maintenance of tunas and tuna-baitfishes of the eastern Pacific Ocean at levels of abundance which will permit maximum sustained catches. SPANISH: Se le ha asignado a la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical bajo la Convención que la formó, la tarea de recoger e interpretar la información científica para facilitar el mantenimiento de los atunes y de los peces de carnada en el Océano Pacífico oriental, a niveles de abundancia que permitan un sostenimiento máximo de capturas. Observations on the behaviour of Polyphemus pediculus and functions of its extremities in the process of feeding. [Translation of: Materialy po biologii i gidrologii Volzhskikh vodokhranilishch, pp. 13-16. Moscow, 1965]

The author summarises observations on the behaviour of Polyphemus pediculus and functions of its extremities in the process of feeding. The crustacean Polyphemus pediculus seizes its prey, kills it and pulverises its food with the help of its extremities. Therefore for a study of its feeding method was necessary not only to have been acquainted in detail with the structure of its extremities, but also to have observed their interaction for the accomplishment of the stated functions.

Structure of the limbs and its significance for the ecology and systematics of the family Chydoridae. [Translation of: Voprosy Gidrobiologii, p385, 1965]

For an explanation of the dynamics of numbers of chydorids, appearing a massive group in the littoral of fresh water bodies, the structure of the limbs of 29 species was studied.

On the ecology of species belonging to the genus Mesocyclops Sars (Crustacea, Copepoda) dwelling in the water-bodies of the Urals and Pri-Ural territory. [Translation from: Zoologicheskie Zhurnal 44(1) 127-130, 1965. ]

In the waterbodies of central Russia, the Urals and western Siberia four species of Crustacea, related to the genus Mesocyclops, are widely distributed: M. (s.str.) leuckarti (Claus), M. (Thermocyclops) oithonoides Sars, [M.](Th.) crassus (Fisch.) and M. (Th.) dybowskii (Lande). Numbers and biomass of Mesocyclops oithonoides in the pelagic water of various water-bodies of the Urals are presented and observations on the above mentioned species are discussed.

The determination of bi- and trivalent iron in proximity, in mineral waters has gained in significance, on biological and technical grounds. This short paper describes the procedure of the determination of bivalent iron and total iron in a water sample.

On the feeding of the larvae of Chironomidae during the planktonic period of life [Translation from: Nauch.Dokl.vyssh.Shk.Biol.Nauk 1 19-21, 1965]

It is known that the larvae of Chironomidae in the first stages of life after leaving the egg case, swim for a long time in a body of water. Positive reaction in light, the capability of directed swimming and passive floating in suspension allow the larvae to temporarily carry out a planktonic way of life. This study describes the behaviour of Chironomus dorsalis larvae after leaving the egg case. The feeding of chironomid larvae in the first stages of development was also described.

Petroleum hydrocarbons in fresh waters: a preliminary desk study and bibliography

A literature survey was carried out into the effects of petroleum hydrocarbons in freshwater, from the toxicity, biodegradability and concentration aspects. It was supplemented by a selective search on hydrocarbons in the marine environment for comparison. The aim was to determine the major inputs of these hydrocarbons, their accumulation, effects and fate in freshwaters. The search was confined to the period 1965-1978. The bibliography contains 390 references, divided by subject.

Hartree-Fock calculations of electric polarizabilities of some simple atoms and molecules, and their practicality. 3. Calculation of vibrational transition probabilities in collinear atom-diatom and diatom-diatom collisions with Lennard-Jones interaction

Part 1. Many interesting visual and mechanical phenomena occur in the critical region of fluids, both for the gas-liquid and liquid-liquid transitions. The precise thermodynamic and transport behavior here has some broad consequences for the molecular theory of liquids. Previous studies in this laboratory on a liquid-liquid critical mixture via ultrasonics supported a basically classical analysis of fluid behavior by M. Fixman (e. g., the free energy is assumed analytic in intensive variables in the thermodynamics)--at least when the fluid is not too close to critical. A breakdown in classical concepts is evidenced close to critical, in some well-defined ways. We have studied herein a liquid-liquid critical system of complementary nature (possessing a lower critical mixing or consolute temperature) to all previous mixtures, to look for new qualitative critical behavior. We did not find such new behavior in the ultrasonic absorption ascribable to the critical fluctuations, but we did find extra absorption due to chemical processes (yet these are related to the mixing behavior generating the lower consolute point). We rederived, corrected, and extended Fixman's analysis to interpret our experimental results in these more complex circumstances. The entire account of theory and experiment is prefaced by an extensive introduction recounting the general status of liquid state theory. The introduction provides a context for our present work, and also points out problems deserving attention. Interest in these problems was stimulated by this work but also by work in Part 3.

Part 2. Among variational theories of electronic structure, the Hartree-Fock theory has proved particularly valuable for a practical understanding of such properties as chemical binding, electric multipole moments, and X-ray scattering intensity. It also provides the most tractable method of calculating first-order properties under external or internal one-electron perturbations, either developed explicitly in orders of perturbation theory or in the fully self-consistent method. The accuracy and consistency of first-order properties are poorer than those of zero-order properties, but this is most often due to the use of explicit approximations in solving the perturbed equations, or to inadequacy of the variational basis in size or composition. We have calculated the electric polarizabilities of H₂, He, Li, Be, LiH, and N₂ by Hartree-Fock theory, using exact perturbation theory or the fully self-consistent method, as dictated by convenience. By careful studies on total basis set composition, we obtained good approximations to limiting Hartree-Fock values of polarizabilities with bases of reasonable size. The values for all species, and for each direction in the molecular cases, are within 8% of experiment, or of best theoretical values in the absence of the former. Our results support the use of unadorned Hartree-Pock theory for static polarizabilities needed in interpreting electron-molecule scattering data, collision-induced light scattering experiments, and other phenomena involving experimentally inaccessible polarizabilities.

Part 3. Numerical integration of the close-coupled scattering equations has been carried out to obtain vibrational transition probabilities for some models of the electronically adiabatic H₂-H₂ collision. All the models use a Lennard-Jones interaction potential between nearest atoms in the collision partners. We have analyzed the results for some insight into the vibrational excitation process in its dependence on the energy of collision, the nature of the vibrational binding potential, and other factors. We conclude also that replacement of earlier, simpler models of the interaction potential by the Lennard-Jones form adds very little realism for all the complication it introduces. A brief introduction precedes the presentation of our work and places it in the context of attempts to understand the collisional activation process in chemical reactions as well as some other chemical dynamics.

Sociedade Brasileira de Direito Aeronáutico (SBDA): a formulação da política aeronáutica brasileira (1950-1965)

Esta dissertação, ao tomar como objeto de pesquisa a Sociedade Brasileira de Direito Aeronáutico (SBDA), tendo por recorte cronológico os anos entre 1950 e 1965, pretende trazer para a análise histórica mais um elemento no auxílio à compreensão do processo de formação do Estado brasileiro no cerne de um projeto de desenvolvimento capitalista de matizes nacionalistas envolvendo infraestrutura, industrialização, ciência e tecnologia, inclusive a modernização das Forças Armadas, no qual a reorganização das incumbências das esferas pública e privada transpassada pela expansão tanto das atividades de regulamentação quanto dos órgãos e agências estatais conduziu a uma ampla institucionalização dos setores econômicos por parte do governo, no caso específico deste estudo o ramo Aeronáutico. A SBDA funcionou como articuladora de interesses entre a sociedade política (Ministério da Aeronáutica) e a sociedade civil (empresas e sindicatos), exercendo desta maneira no parelho estatal um papel que a insere na aplicação do conceito de Estado gramsciano. A formulação de um campo jurídico no Brasil, mediante a perspectiva de análise de Pierre Bourdieu relativa ao campo intelectual, integra a trajetória de luta da SBDA pela autonomia do Direito Aeronáutico, agindo como organizadora das demandas provenientes deste setor específico de atividades.
