We present a high-resolution marine record of sediment input from the Guayas River, Ecuador, that reflects changes in precipitation along western equatorial South America during the last 18ka. We use log (Ti/Ca) derived from X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) to document terrigenous input from riverine runoff that integrates rainfall from the Guayas River catchment. We find that rainfall-induced riverine runoff has increased during the Holocene and decreased during the last deglaciation. Superimposed on those long-term trends, we find that rainfall was probably slightly increased during the Younger Dryas, while the Heinrich event 1 was marked by an extreme load of terrigenous input, probably reflecting one of the wettest period over the time interval studied. When we compare our results to other Deglacial to Holocene rainfall records located across the tropical South American continent, different modes of variability become apparent. The records of rainfall variability imply that changes in the hydrological cycle at orbital and sub-orbital timescales were different from western to eastern South America. Orbital forcing caused an antiphase behavior in rainfall trends between eastern and western equatorial South America. In contrast, millennial-scale rainfall changes, remotely connected to the North Atlantic climate variability, led to homogenously wetter conditions over eastern and western equatorial South America during North Atlantic cold spells. These results may provide helpful diagnostics for testing the regional rainfall sensitivity in climate models and help to refine rainfall projections in South America for the next century.

This report describes the results of semiquantitative analysis of clay mineral composition by X-ray diffraction. The samples consist of hemipelagic mud and mudstone cored from Hydrate Ridge during Leg 204 of the Ocean Drilling Program. We analyzed oriented aggregates of the clay-sized fractions (<2 µm) to estimate relative percentages of smectite, illite, and chlorite (+ kaolinite). For the most part, stratigraphic variations in clay mineral composition are modest and there are no significant differences among the seven sites that were included in the study. On average, early Pleistocene to Holocene trench slope and slope basin deposits contain 29% smectite, 31% illite, and 40% chlorite (+ kaolinite). Late Pliocene to early Pleistocene strata from the underlying accretionary prism contain moderately larger proportions of smectite with average values of 38% smectite, 27% illite, and 35% chlorite (+ kaolinite). There is no evidence of clay mineral diagenesis at the depths sampled. The expandability of smectite is, on average, equal to 64%, and there are no systematic variations in expandability as a function of burial depth or depositional age. The absence of clay mineral diagenesis is consistent with the relatively shallow sample depths and corresponding maximum temperatures of only 24°-33°C.

The song system of birds consists of several neural pathways. One of these, the anterior forebrain pathway, is necessary for the acquisition but not for the production of learned song in zebra finches. It has been shown that the anterior forebrain pathway sequentially connects the following nuclei: the high vocal center, area X of lobus parolfactorius, the medial portion of the dorsolateral thalamic nucleus, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of anterior neostriatum (IMAN), and the robust nucleus of the archistriatum (RA). We now show in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) that IMAN cells that project to RA also project to area X, forming a feedback loop within the anterior forebrain pathway. The axonal endings of the IMAN projection into area X form cohesive and distinct domains. Small injections of tracer in subregions of area X backfill a spatially restricted subset of cells in IMAN, that, in turn, send projections to RA that are arranged in horizontal layers, which may correspond to the functional representation of vocal tract muscles demonstrated by others. We infer from our data that there is a myotopic representation throughout the anterior forebrain pathway. In addition, we suggest that the parcellation of area X into smaller domains by the projection from IMAN highlights a functional architecture within X, which might correspond to units of motor control, to the representation of acoustic features of song, or both.

Long-term alcohol abuse by human subjects leads to selective brain damage that is restricted in extent and variable in severity. Within the cerebral cortex, neuronal loss is most marked in the superior frontal cortex and relatively mild in motor cortex. Cirrhotic alcoholics and subjects with alcohol-related Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome show more severe and more extensive damage than do uncomplicated cases. Accumulating evidence suggests that the likelihood of developing alcohol dependency is associated with one or more genetic markers. In previous work we showed that GABAA receptor functionality, and the subunit isoform expression that underlies this, differed in region- and disease-specific ways between alcoholics and controls. By contrast, glutamate receptor (NMDA, KA, AMPA) differences were muted or absent. Here we asked if genotype differentiated the form, pharmacology, or expression of glutamate and GABA receptors in pathologically vulnerable and spared cortical regions, with a view to determining whether such subject factors might influence the severity of alcohol-induced brain damage. Cerebrocortical tissue was obtained at autopsy under informed, written consent from uncomplicated and alcoholic-cirrhotic Caucasian (predominantly Anglo-Celtic) cases, together with matched controls and cases with cirrhosis of non-alcoholic origin. All subjects had pathological confirmation of liver and brain diagnosis; none had been polydrug abusers. Samples were processed for synaptic membrane receptor binding, mRNA analysis by quantitative RT-PCR, and protein analysis by Western blot. Genotyping was performed by PCR methods, in the main using published primers. Several genetic markers differentiated between our alcoholic and control subjects, including the GABAA receptor 2 subunit (GABB2) gene ( 2 (3) 10.329, P 0.01), the dopamine D2 receptor B1 (DRD2B) allele ( 2 (3) 10.109, P 0.01) and a subset of the alcohol dehydrogenase-3 (ADH3) alleles ( 2 (2) 4.730, P 0.05). Although neither the type-2 glutamate transporter (EAAT2) nor the serotonin transporter (5HTT) genes were significantly associated with alcoholism, only EAAT2 heterozygotes showed a significant association between ADH3 genotype and alcoholism ( 2 (3) 7.475, P 0.05). Other interactions between genotypes were also observed. DRD2A, DRD2B, GABB2, EAAT2 and 5HTT genotypes did not divide alcoholic cases and controls on NMDA receptor parameters, although in combined subjects there was a significant DRD2B X Area Interaction with glutamateNMDA receptor efficacy (F(1,57) 4.67; P 0.05), measured as the extent of glutamate-enhanced MK801 binding. In contrast, there was a significant Case-group X ADH3 X Area Interaction with glutamateNMDA receptor efficacy (F(3,57) 2.97; P 0.05). When GABAA receptor subunit isoform expression was examined, significant Case-group X Genotype X Area X Isoform interactions were found for EAAT2 with subunit mRNA (F(1,37) 4.22; P0.05), for GABB2 with isoform protein (F(1,37) 5.69; P 0.05), and for DRD2B with isoform protein (F(2,34)5.69; P0.05). The results suggest that subjects’ genetic makeup may modulate the effectiveness of amino acid-mediated transmission in different cortical regions, and thereby influence neuronal vulnerability to excitotoxicity.

Serotonin can modulate the activity of neural reward pathways that are strongly implicated in mediating the effects of chronic alcohol misuse, and its treatment, in human subjects. In previous work and as discussed elsewhere at this meeting, we and others have found consistent differences in the parameters of GABA and glutamate receptors, and the expression of their component subunit transcripts and proteins, in areas of the alcoholic brain that are altered by alcoholism. We did not fi nd clear changes in GABA and glutamate transport function in such samples, but a series of microarray analyses showed consistent upregulation of the presynaptic GABA/betaine transporter SLC6A12. Microarray studies showed no signifi cant differences in the expression of transcripts associated with 5HT transmission; however, only a small number of such elements were present on the arrays. Here we partitioned GABAA and NMDA pharmacology, and subunit mRNA and protein expression, measured in samples of frontal and motor cortex obtained at autopsy from alcoholics without comorbid disease, alcoholics with liver cirrhosis, and controls, according to 5HTTLPR (SLC6A4) and 5HT1B (HTR1B) polymorphisms. We found no effect of these genotypes on the expression of GABAA receptor gene products, but there was a signifi cant mRNA Transcript X Area X Group X 5HTTLPR Interaction with NMDA subunit isoform expression measured by Real Time PCR with GAPDH normalization. Further analysis showed the effect to be selective for alcoholics with cirrhosis, to be most marked in the pathologically vulnerable frontal cortex, and to vary with subunit transcript (F2,76 = 6.545, P = 0.002). NR1 expression was most affected, followed by NR2A, with NR2B expression least altered. Pilot data suggest 5HT1B genotype may also modulate NMDA subunit expression. Interactions between amino acid and serotonin transmission may infl uence susceptibility to alcohol dependence or pathogenesis

The ability to be faithful to a particular area or site was analysed in the shanny Lipophrys pholis. Using passive integrated transponders, adults from a population of L. pholis at Cabo Raso, Portugal, were followed over a period of 3 years. The findings showed that site fidelity is a consistent behaviour during the breeding season with specific breeding males being found only in particular sectors within the area, and in specific nests throughout the years. The fact that, in general, L. pholis individuals were absent from the study area during the non-breeding season and breeding males were recorded returning to the same nests and sectors for consecutive breeding seasons suggests that they have developed excellent homing abilities. Translocation data corroborate this idea showing that breeding males successfully returned to their nests after a displacement of >100 m. Altogether, these findings highlight the relevance of life-history traits (e.g. nesting) in the conditioning of site fidelity and homing for this species of rocky intertidal fish, and more importantly, provide evidence for the need of a well-developed navigational system.

Since the discovery 1] of gamma' precipitate (L1(2) - Co-3 (Al, W)) in the Co-Al-W ternary system, there has been an increased interest in Co-based superalloys. Since these alloys have two phase microstructures (gamma + gamma') similar to Ni-based superalloys 2], they are viable candidates in high temperature applications, particularly in land-based turbines. The role of alloying on stability of the gamma' phase has been an active area of research. In this study, electronic structure calculations were done to probe the effect of alloying in Co3W with L1(2) structure. Compositions of type Co-3(W, X), (where X/Y = Mn, Fe, Ni, Pt, Cr, Al, Si, V, W, Ta, Ti, Nb, Hf, Zr and Mo) were studied. Effect of alloying on equilibrium lattice parameters and ground state energies was used to calculate Vegard's coefficients and site preference related data. The effect of alloying on the stability of the L1(2) structure vis a vis other geometrically close packed ordered structures was also studied for a range of Co3X compounds. Results suggest that the penchant of element for the W sublattice can be predicted by comparing heats of formation of Co3X in different structures.
