The growing spread of small but powerful mobile devices (such as PDAs, mobile phone, Internet Tablet, etc.) opens up new scenarios in which users can interact with such devices in many environments in order to access the information at different locations. In this thesis, a ubiquitous computing based system called Secure Bluetooth Audio Transmission System is introduced. This system is situated in a large public place (like airport, festival venues, etc.), where voice messages are conveyed from the system to users' Bluetooth headsets in order to inform users the latest flight schedule and other public information. The reliability of the message is secured by adopting an authorization strategy and ECDSA. In order to assess and evaluate the risks and potential weaknesses of the system, an easy-to-use prototype implementation was written and tested. Other possible uses and further research were also considered.

The use of social network sites (SNS) has become very valuable to educational institutions. Some universities have formally integrated these social media in their educational systems and are using them to improve their service delivery. The main aim of this study was to establish whether African universities have embraced this emerging technology by having official presence on SNS. A purposive sampling method was used to study 24 universities from which data were obtained by visiting their official websites and following the official links to the most common SNS.

In this paper we present a hybrid technique for correcting distortions that appear when projecting images onto geometrically complex, colored and textured surfaces. It analyzes the optical flow that results from perspective distortions during motions of the observer and tries to use this information for computing the correct image warping. If this fails due to an unreliable optical flow, an accurate -but slower and visiblestructured light projection is automatically triggered. Together with an appropriate radiometric compensation, view-dependent content can be projected onto arbitrary everyday surfaces. An implementation mainly on the GPU ensures fast frame rates.

Traditional methods of R&D management are no longer sufficient for embracing innovations and leveraging complex new technologies to fully integrated positions in established systems. This paper presents the view that the technology integration process is a result of fundamental interactions embedded in inter-organisational activities. Emerging industries, high technology companies and knowledge intensive organisations owe a large part of their viability to complex networks of inter-organisational interactions and relationships. R&D organisations are the gatekeepers in the technology integration process with their initial sanction and motivation to develop technologies providing the first point of entry. Networks rely on the activities of stakeholders to provide the foundations of collaborative R&D activities, business-to-business marketing and strategic alliances. Such complex inter-organisational interactions and relationships influence value creation and organisational goals as stakeholders seek to gain investment opportunities. A theoretical model is developed here that contributes to our understanding of technology integration (adoption) as a dynamic process, which is simultaneously structured and enacted through the activities of stakeholders and organisations in complex inter-organisational networks of sanction and integration.

Single-phase Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3 powder was produced using conventional solid state reaction methods. Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3 ceramics with 2 wt % ZnO as sintering additive sintered at 1550 degreesC exhibited a dielectric constant of similar to32 and loss tangent of 5x10(-5) at 2 GHz. X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric measurements were used to characterize the structural and thermodynamic properties of the material. Ab initio electronic structure calculations were used to give insight into the unusual properties of Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3, as well as a similar and more widely used material Ba(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O-3. While both compounds have a hexagonal Bravais lattice, the P321 space group of Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3 is reduced from P (3) under bar m1 of Ba(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O-3 as a result of a distortion of oxygen away from the symmetric position between the Ta and Cd ions. Both of the compounds have a conduction band minimum and valence band maximum composed of mostly weakly itinerant Ta 5d and Zn 3d/Cd 4d levels, respectively. The covalent nature of the directional d-electron bonding in these high-Z oxides plays an important role in producing a more rigid lattice with higher melting points and enhanced phonon energies, and is suggested to play an important role in producing materials with a high dielectric constant and low microwave loss. Good quality concept lattice drawings are required to effectively communicate logical structure in Formal Concept Analysis. Data analysis frameworks such as the Toscana System use manually arranged concept lattices to avoid the problem of automatically producing high quality lattices. This limits Toscana systems to a finite number of concept lattices that have been prepared a priori. To extend the use of formal concept analysis, automated techniques are required that can produce high quality concept lattice drawings on demand. This paper proposes and evaluates an adaption of layer diagrams to improve automated lattice drawing. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Effectively using heterogeneous, distributed information has attracted much research in recent years. Current web services technologies have been used successfully in some non data intensive distributed prototype systems. However, most of them can not work well in data intensive environment. This paper provides an infrastructure layer in data intensive environment for the effectively providing spatial information services by using the web services over the Internet. We extensively investigate and analyze the overhead of web services in data intensive environment, and propose some new optimization techniques which can greatly increase the system’s efficiency. Our experiments show that these techniques are suitable to data intensive environment. Finally, we present the requirement of these techniques for the information of web services over the Internet.

An ontology is increasingly becoming an essential tool for solving problems in many research areas. The ontology is a complex information object. It can contain millions of concepts in complex relationships. When we want to manage complex information objects, we generally turn to information systems technology. An information system intended to manage ontology is called an ontology server. The ontology server technology is at the time of writing quite immature. Therefore, this paper reviews and compares the main ontology servers that have been reported in the literatures. As a result, we point out several research questions related to server technology

Workflow technology has delivered effectively for a large class of business processes, providing the requisite control and monitoring functions. At the same time, this technology has been the target of much criticism due to its limited ability to cope with dynamically changing business conditions which require business processes to be adapted frequently, and/or its limited ability to model business processes which cannot be entirely predefined. Requirements indicate the need for generic solutions where a balance between process control and flexibility may be achieved. In this paper we present a framework that allows the workflow to execute on the basis of a partially specified model where the full specification of the model is made at runtime, and may be unique to each instance. This framework is based on the notion of process constraints. Where as process constraints may be specified for any aspect of the workflow, such as structural, temporal, etc. our focus in this paper is on a constraint which allows dynamic selection of activities for inclusion in a given instance. We call these cardinality constraints, and this paper will discuss their specification and validation requirements.

We present some techniques to obtain smooth derivations of concurrent programs that address both safety and progress in a formal manner. Our techniques form an extension to the calculational method of Feijen and van Casteren using a UNITY style progress logic. We stress the role of stable guards, and we illustrate the derivation techniques on some examples in which progress plays an essential role.

This special issue is a collection of the selected papers published on the proceedings of the First International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Applications (ADMA) held in Wuhan, China in 2005. The articles focus on the innovative applications of data mining approaches to the problems that involve large data sets, incomplete and noise data, or demand optimal solutions.
