Objective: This paper describes the process employed to adapt the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) for use with Indigenous Australian populations.Methods: This study comprised a two-stage process: an initial consultation with Indigenous health workers, informing the textual and conceptual adaptation of items, followed by trial of the adjusted instrument with Indigenous community members (n=301).Results: Internal reliability was demonstrated: Australian Indigenous Problem Gambling Index (AIPGI) Cronbach's alpha α = 0.92 (Original PGSI, α = 0.84). Item-rest correlations confirmed that responses to items were consistent and related to the total score of remaining items. The AIPGI could predict gambling severity based on gambling frequency, when controlling for age and gender (OR=1.28, 95%CI 1.17–1.40).Conclusions: The adapted instrument is accessible to a cross-section of Indigenous Australians and has demonstrated properties of reliability and validity. An extended trial is needed to test the application of the instrument to a broader Indigenous audience and to further explore and confirm psychometric properties of the adapted instrument.Implications: This study introduces a culturally adapted tool for measuring rates of disordered gambling among Indigenous Australians.

Using a collective biography method informed by a Deleuzian theoretical approach (Davies and Gannon 2009, 2012), this article analyses embodied memories of girlhood becomings through affective engagements with resonating images in media and popular culture. In this approach to analysis we move beyond the impasse in some feminist cultural studies where studies of popular culture have been understood through theories of representation and reception that retain a sense of discrete subjectivity and linear effects. In these approaches, analysis focuses respectively on decoding and deciphering images in terms of their normative and ideological baggage, and, particularly with moving images, on psychological readings. Understanding bodies and popular culture through Deleuzian notions of “becoming” and “assemblage” opens possibilities for feminist researchers to consider the ways in which bodies are not separate from images but are, rather, becomings that are known, felt, materialized and mobilized with/through images(Coleman 2008a, 2008b, 2008c, 2009, 2011; Ringrose and Coleman 2013). We tease out the implications of this new approach to media affects through three memories of girls’ engagements with media images, reconceived as moments of embodied being within affective flows of popular culture that might momentarily extend upon ways of being and doing girlhood.

This study involves the analysis of one of the most recent Indigenous Education policies, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan 2010-2014 (MCEECDYA, 2011). It examines how the language used within policy positions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Articulating Rigney's (1999) Indigenist Research Principles with Fairclough's (2001) Critical Discourse Analysis provides a platform for critical dialogues about policy decision-making. In doing so, this articulation enables and emphasises the need for potential policy revision to contribute to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander struggle for self-determination.
