A molecular phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA and Control Region sequences from native and introduced populations was undertaken, in order to characterize the introduction of Cichla (peacock bass or tucunaré) species in Brazil. Mitochondrial DNA haplotypes found in introduced fish from Minas Gerais state (southeastern Brazil) clustered only with those from native species of the Tocantins River (Cichla piquiti and C. kelberi), thereby suggesting a single or, at most, few translocation acts in this area, even though with fish from the same source-population. Our study contributes to an understanding of the introduction of Cichla in regions of Brazil outside the Amazon basin, and adds phylogenetic data to the recently describe Cichla species, endemic from the Tocantins-Araguaia basin.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the bed in High Density Porous Polyethylene (Medpor) implants integration. Two different kind of beds -- corticalized and decorticalized -- were made in six dogs. The animals were killed thirty, sixty and ninety days after implantation. Blocks including implant and adjacent bone were harvested, submitted to histological procedures, stained in hematoxiline-eosine and analyzed in optic microscope. The results demonstrated an absence of infection and foreign body reaction associated with High Density Porous Polyethylene (Medpor) implants. Furthermore, bony and fibrovascular ingrowth could be observed into its pores. The best integration was noted in decorticalized group, in which occurred a greater bony and fibrovascular ingrowth in comparison to the corticalized group

Amelogenesis imperfecta is a hereditary condition that can alter the thickness, color, and shape of tooth enamel. Recent adhesive materials and techniques have provided less invasive treatment options. This case report presents the treatment of a patient whose anterior teeth had color alterations, white spots, pits, and shape defects. Using a more conservative technique, the mandibular and maxillary anterior teeth were restored using veneer direct composite restorations. After 6 years, the restorations demonstrated no deterioration, and no pathology was seen in association with the rehabilitation.

One of the oldest segments in operations management, whose models are always subject to development efforts, for academics and productive organizations, is the management of production and work organization. Proposals for strategic management principles that seek to bring production to streamline processes reduce costs and add value, identifying problems with material flow and information while reducing the response time. This is realized through the pursuit of the best actions to achieve goals and targets established in a successful Planning and Production Control. This article aims to identify and implement actions that increase the speed of supply of goods produced in a enterprise cutlery; positively influencing the perception of customers. Such attitudes benefit all actors involved in the network, a fact which is expressed in the production chain. To lay the foundations of research and validate the data obtained, it was a study drawing on action research methodology. The goods produced are sold, mainly to wholesalers. Was proved seven aspects to improve and enhance the competitiveness of the organization, among them the complete design of the network, integrating upstream and downstream actors.

This study is based on the mapping of occurrences associated with social vulnerability and natural risks, which refer to the resilience of populations and territories, regarding natural hazards associated with the functioning of natural systems (eg, earthquakes, flood, mass movements). According to UNISDR (2014), the state of São Paulo is a reference in working with Urban Resilience and Disaster in the Resilient Cities Campaign (2014), considering the high investment in Risk Areas Mapping and Public Education Campaigns implemented by the Civil Defense. Thus, this study aims to mapping the occurrence of events related to Tree Falls, Erosion, Landslides, Irregular Housing, Rocky Blocks Falls, Wall Falls, Unroofing and Irregular Construction, attended by the Civil Defense in the city of Santos, São Paulo State, from 2011 to 2014. Thereafter, correlated analyzes to the Environmental Vulnerabilities were generated. The Environmental Vulnerability databases used in this dissertation compose the results of the CNPQ Project - Environmental Vulnerability Mapping of the State of Sao Paulo - Brazil: a methodological contribution of Freitas (2013) and Bortolettoet al (2014), with information collected from the 2010 Census (IBGE, 2010), on a census sectors scale. The adopted methodological procedure involves document analysis followed by data integration in Geographic Information System, through algorithms analysis and mapscrossing. The results obtained in Maps of Social and Environmental Vulnerability Occurrences presented areas of High or Very High Vulnerability. The main variables obtained with such characteristics are Irregular Housing, Landslides and Rocky Blocks Falls, which was associated with hilly terrain formations, with slopes above 30%. To the areas of Medium, Low and Very Low Vulnerability were associated the variables Tree Falls, Wall Falls, Erosion, Unroofing and Irregular Construction, which are spatially distributed without an...

Vascular dysfunction associated with two-kidney, one-clip (2K-1C) hypertension may result from both altered matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity and higher concentrations of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Doxycycline is considering the most potent MMP inhibitor of tetracyclines and attenuates 2K-1C hypertension-induced high blood pressure and chronic vascular remodeling. Doxycycline might also act as a ROS scavenger and this may contribute to the amelioration of some cardiovascular diseases associated with increased concentrations of ROS. We hypothesized that in addition to its MMP inhibitory effect, doxycycline attenuates oxidative stress and improves nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability in 2K-1C hypertension, thus improving hypertension-induced arterial endothelial dysfunction. Sham operated or 2K-1C hypertensive rats were treated with doxycycline 30 mg/kg/day (or vehicle). After 8 weeks of treatment, aortic rings were isolated to assess endothelium dependent vasorelaxation to A23187. Arterial and systemic levels of ROS were respectively measured using dihydroethidine (DHE) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Neutrophils-derived ROS were tested in vitro using the fluoroprobe Carboxy-H(2)DCFDA and human neutrophils stimulated with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). NO levels were assessed in rat aortic endothelial cells by confocal microscopy. Aortic MMP activity was determined by in situ zymography. Doxycycline attenuated 2K-1C hypertension (169 +/- 17.3 versus 209 +/- 10.9 mm Hg in hypertensive controls, p < 0.05) and protected against hypertension-induced reduction in endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation to A23187 (p < 0.05). Doxycycline also decreased hypertension-induced oxidative stress (p <= 0.05), higher MMP activity (p < 0.01) and improved NO levels in aortic endothelial cells (p < 0.01). Therefore, doxycycline ameliorates 2K-1C hypertension-induced endothelial dysfunction in aortas by inhibiting oxidative stress generation and improving NO bioavailability, in addition to its inhibitory effects on MMP activity. In this study, Canoparmelia texana lichenized fungi species was used as a passive biomonitor of the atmospheric pollution from the industrial city of So Mateus do Sul, PR, Brazil. Lichen samples collected from tree barks were cleaned, freeze-dried and analyzed by neutron activation analysis. Comparisons were made between the element concentrations obtained in lichens from this city and that from a clean area of Atlantic Forest in Intervales Park, SP. The high concentrations of elements As, Ca, Co, Cr, Fe, Hf, Sb, and Th found in lichens could be attributed to the emissions from a ceramic and an oil shale plants.
