Two new silica-based organic-inorganic hybrid materials (B104SGs and O104SGs) doped with a binary mixture of imidazolium and phosphonium ionic liquids have been synthesized and used as sorbents in batch system for rare earths (RE) separation. Imidazolium ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (C(4)mim(+)PF(6)(-)) or 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (C(8)mim(+)PF(6)(-)) acted as porogens to prepare porous materials and additives to stabilize extractant within silica gel.

A new strategy for preparing ammonium-type ionic liquid (IL) by acid/base neutralization reaction was proposed. The method contributed to preparing hydroxide-based ammonium IL and resulting task specific ionic liquid (TSIL) with high purity using a low-costly and environment-friendly synthetic. route. Halide contamination in the prepared ILs could be markedly decreased than those prepared by well-established anion metathesis method. Moreover, some novel TSILs composed of cations and anions with big steric hindrances could be prepared by this method. Physicochemical properties of the bifunctional TSILs, i.e., density, water content, decomposition temperature, and munal solubility, were also studied in this article.

A facile method to obtain polydisperse chemically-converted graphene sheets that are covalently functionalized with ionic liquid was reported-the resulting graphene sheets, without any assistance from polymeric or surfactant stabilizers, can be stably dispersed in water, DMF, and DMSO.

Preparation of monodispersed platinum nanoparticles with average size 2.0 nm stabilized by amino-terminated ionic liquid was demonstrated. The resulting platinum nanoparticles (Pt-IL) retained long-term stability without special protection. The Pt-IL nanoparticles exhibited high electrocatalytic activity toward reduction of oxygen and oxidation of methanol. Rotating disk electrode voltammetry and rotating ring-disk electrode voltammetry confirmed that the Pt-IL films could catalyze an almost four-electron reduction of dioxygen to water.

Ionic liquid monomer 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium bromide (ViEtIM(+)Br(-)) was first used to copolymerize with acrylonitrile (AN) successfully under various conditions. This was achieved with azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator and dimethyl sulfoxide as the solvent. The kinetics of this copolymerization were studied. The values of the monomer apparent reactivity ratios were calculated by the Kelen-Tudos method. The apparent reactivity ratios of ViEtIM(+)Br(-) (r(ViEtIM+Br-)) and AN (r(AN)) were similar at polymerization conversions of less than 10%, (r(AN) = 0.954, r(ViEtIM+Br-) = 0.976). The copolymers were obtained with high molecular weights and high hydrophilicides. The copolymers were characterized by H-1-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. These copolymers may be potentially useful in the preparation of precursor fibers and carbon fibers.

Chitosan(chitin)/cellulose composites as biodegradable biosorbents were prepared under an environment-friendly preparation processes using ionic liquids. Infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectra indicated the stronger intermolecular hydrogen bond between chitosan and cellulose, and the hydroxyl and amine groups were believed to be the metal ion binding sites. Among the prepared biosorbents, freeze-dried composite had higher adsorption capacity and better stability. The capacity of adsorption was found to be Cu(II) (0.417 mmol/g) > Zn(II) (0.303 mmol/g) > Cr(VI) (0.251 mmol/g) > Ni(II) (0.225 mmol/g) > Ph(II) (0.127 mmol/g) at the same initial concentration 5 mmol L-1. In contrast to some other chitosan-type biosorbents, preparation and component of the biosorbent were obviously more environment friendly. Moreover, adsorption capacity of chitosan in the blending biosorbent could be fully shown.

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,29-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) [Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)] ion-exchanged in the sulfonic-functionalized MCM-41 silicas was developed with tripropylamine (TPrA) as a co-reactant in a carbon paste electrode (CPE) using a room temperature ionic liquid (IL) as a binder. The sulfonic-functionalized silicas MCM-41 were used for preparing an ECL sensor by the electrostatic interactions between Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) cations and sulfonic acid groups. We used the IL as a binder to construct the CPE (IL-CPE) to replace the traditional binder of the CPE (T-CPE)-silicone oil. The results indicated that the MCM-41-modified IL-CPE had more open structures to allow faster diffusion of Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) and that the ionic liquid also acted as a conducting bridge to connect TPrA with Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) sites immobilized in the electrode, resulting in a higher ECL intensity compared with the MCM-41-modified T-CPE. Herein, the detection limit for TPrA of the MCM-41-modified IL-CPE was 7.2 nM, which was two orders of magnitude lower than that observed at the T-CPE. When this new sensor was used in flow injection analysis (FIA), the MCM-41-modified IL-CPE ECL sensor also showed good reproducibility. Furthermore, the sensor could also be renewed easily by mechanical polishing whenever needed.

The hydrophobic carbon nanotubes-ionic liquid (CNTs-IL) get forms a stable modified film on hydrophobic graphite electrode surface. Laccase immobilized on the CNTs-IL gel film modified electrode shows good thermal stability and enhanced electrochemical catalytic ability. The optimal bioactivity occurs with increasing temperature and this optimum is 20 degrees C higher in comparison to free laccase. The improvement of laccase thermal stability may be due to the microenvironment of hydrophobic CNTs-IL gel on graphite electrode surface. On the other hand, the sensitive detection of oxygen has been achieved due to the feasibility of oxygen reduction by both of laccase and nanocomposite of CNTs-IL gel. Furthermore, the laccase hybrid nanocomposite also shows the fast electrochemical response and high sensitivity to the inhibitors of halide ions with the approximate IC50 of 0.01, 4.2 and 87.5 mM for the fluoride, chloride and bromide ions, respectively. It implies the feasibility of laccase modified electrode as an inhibition biosensor to detect the modulators of laccase.

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-modified electrode has been prepared by using ionic liquid (IL) as the binder. The as-prepared CNTs-IL composite modified electrode has good biocompatibility and is a suitable matrix to immobilize biomolecules. Glucose oxidase (GOx), containing flavin adenine dinucleotide as active site, stably adsorbed on modified electrode surface has resulted in the direct electron transfer. The electron transfer rate of 9.08 s(-1) obtained is much higher than that of GOx adsorbed on the CNTs papers (1.7 s(-1)), and the process is more reversible with small redox peak separation of 23 mV This may be due to the synergetic promotion of CNTs and IL to electron transfer of the protein, especially the IL as the binder, showing better electrochemical properties than that of chitosan and Nafion. Furthermore, GOx adsorbed at the modified electrode exhibits good stability and keeps good electrocatalytic activity to glucose with broad linear range up to 20 mM. Besides, the simple preparation procedure and easy renewability make the system a basis to investigate the electron transfer kinetics and biocatalytic performance of GOx and provide a promising platform for the development of biosensors.
