Anomalous atmospheric circulation and large winter floods in six subregions of the southwestern United States

Complex organization of the Streptomyces avermitilis genes encoding the avermectin polyketide synthase

The avermectin (Av) polyketide synthase (PKS) and erythromycin (Er) PKS are encoded by modular repeats of DNA, but the genetic organization of the modules encoding Av PKS is more complex than Er PKS. Sequencing of several related DNA fragments from Streptomyces avermitilis that are part of the Av biosynthetic gene cluster, revealed that they encode parts of large multifunctional PKS proteins. The Av PKS proteins show strong similarity to each other, as well as similarity to Er PKS proteins [Donadio et al., Science 252 (1991) 675–679] and fatty acid synthases. Partial DNA sequencing of the 65-kb region containing all the related sequence elements in the avr genes provides evidence for twelve modular repeats encoding FAS-like domains. The genes encoding the Av PKS are organized as two sets of six modular repeats which are convergently transcribed.

Diversity of functional groups in the vegetation sandy seashore of the Grande, Anclitas and Caguamas Cays (Jardines de la Reina Archipelago, Cuba)

Sandy shores are known to be extreme ecosystems where the vegetation has evolved many morphological and physiological adaptations for its survival. With the aim of identify possible relationships between the vegetation´s functional diversity with abiotic factors and its corresponding quantification, we collected data on the abundance and richness of the sandy coast vegetation complex in Grande, Anclitas and Caguamas keys. Its flora is largely characterized by the dominance of hemicryptophytes and chamaephytes plants with nanophyllous leaves and displaying dispersal syndromes such as zoochory and anemochory. However, the functional groups´ richness, in the present study, varies from one key to another. Functional diversity is similar between the wet and dry seasons, and its spatial variation is influenced by the interplay of the set of abiotic factors herein studied.

Bullying in the Same-Sex Friendships of Young Adolescent Girls: A Qualitative Study

This qualitative, narrative study explored the bullying experiences of young adolescent girls within their same-sex dyadic and group friendships. The participants were 5 female students, ages 11 and 12 years old, from 1 private, religious school in southern Ontario. Each girl participated in an audiotaped, 30-minute, personal interview based on an unstructured interview protocol. Interview transcripts were analyzed for bullying behaviors using Marini and Dane's (2008) subtypes of bullying, including the form, function, and involvement in bullying. Interview transcripts were also analyzed for common and emerging themes using aspects of L. M., Brown and Gilligan's (1992) "Listener's Guide." The findings of this study suggested that within their same-sex friendships girls assume the roles of all participants in bullying, including bullies, victims, bystanders, and bully-victims. The findings also suggested that bullying behaviors within young adolescent girls' same-sex friendships are mainly indirect in their mode of attack and that they are both proactive and reactive. The bully behaviors identified in this study were used to inform the major themes or salient features within the dynamics of girls' same-sex friendships also identified. These themes included acceptance, intimacy, negotiation, inclusion/exclusion, moral character judgements, and power. The findings of this study will be used to inform current theory, personal and professional practice, as well as future research.

Análisis de los componentes de la candena de suministro y su relación con el desempeño organizacional en el sector prendas de vestir

Esta propuesta de investigación pretende aportar al proyecto de investigación “La administración de la cadena de suministro y su relación con el desempeño superior de la organización” a la elaboración de la primera etapa que consiste en la revisión de literatura para la elaboración y revisión del marco teórico de dicha investigación. Este proyecto se centra en el programa de estrategia y empresa en donde se realizará una investigación descriptiva acerca de la administración de la cadena de suministros, con el fin de estudiar la adopción y viabilidad de diferentes estrategias en el interior de las organizaciones, que puedan impactar en su desempeño y por lo tanto, en la competitividad y perdurabilidad de las empresas del sector de prendas de vestir en Colombia.

El presente libro es el resultado de una apuesta metodol��gica que aborda el problema del Estado en Colombia teniendo en cuenta las variables pol��ticas e institucionales de su consistencia interna: el adentro y las condiciones externas de su desarrollo en el contexto de dependencia económica y violencia recurrente que lo han caracterizado durante la mayor parte de su existencia histórica: el afuera, ha sido utilizada para dar cuenta de los estudios sociales que se han ocupado del tema, los cuales son abordados como una información de saber que aglutina la investigación económica, antropol��gica, sociol��gica, histórica y politol��gica realizada desde los a��os sesenta.Los autores se han restringido al archivo planteando hipótesis propias sobre algunos problemas neurálgicos de nuestra estabilidad: la idea de que el Estado Colombiano encuentre su matriz fundacional en el paso de la Conquista a la Colonia.
