A joint theoretical-experimental study of the transfer ionization process p + He -> H-0 + He2+ + e(-) is presented. For the first time all particles in the final state have been detected in triple coincidence. This fully differential measurement is in good agreement with a theoretical model where the target is described by a wavefunction containing both radial and angular correlation terms.

The continuum distorted-wave eikonal initial-state (CDW-EIS) theory of Crothers and McCann (J Phys B 1983, 16, 3229) used to describe ionization in ion-atom collisions is generalized (G) to GCDW-EIS to incorporate the azimuthal angle dependence of each CDW in the final-state wave function. This is accomplished by the analytic continuation of hydrogenic-like wave functions from below to above threshold, using parabolic coordinates and quantum numbers including magnetic quantum numbers, thus providing a more complete set of states. At impact energies lower than 25 keVu(-1), the total ionization cross-section falls off, with decreasing energy, too quickly in comparison with experimental data. The idea behind and motivation for the GCDW-EIS model is to improve the theory with respect to experiment by including contributions from nonzero magnetic quantum numbers. We also therefore incidentally provide a new derivation of the theory of continuum distorted waves for zero magnetic quantum numbers while simultaneously generalizing it. The technique of double translational energy spectroscopy.(DTES), recently successfully developed in this laboratory for use with targets of atomic hydrogen, has been used to study one-electron capture by ground-state N2+(2s22p)(2)p(0) ions in collisions with hydrogen atoms at energies within the range 0.8-6.0 keV. Cross sections for the formation of the main excited product channels have been determined. The measurements allow a re-evaluation of our previous TES measurements carried out with N2+ primary beams containing an admixture of metastable N2+(2s2p2)(4)p ions. The main findings of these earlier measurements are confirmed and the DTES measurements now remove any ambiguity in interpretation of the experimental data. While recent theoretical studies correctly predict the two main N+ D-3(0) and P-3(0) product channels, the quantitative agreement with experiment is only partially satisfactory.

We have measured the two-electron contribution of the ground state energy of helium-like argon ions using an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). A two-dimensional map was measured showing the intensity of x-rays from the trap passing through a krypton-filled absorption cell. The independent axes of this map were electron beam energy and x-ray energy. From this map, we deduced the two-electron contribution of the ground state of helium-like argon. This experimentally determined Value (312.4 +/- 9.5 eV) was found to be in good agreement with our calculated values (about 303.35 eV) and previous calculations of the same quantity. Based on these measurements, we have shown that a ten-day absorption spectroscopy run with a super-EBIT should be sufficient to provide a new benchmark value for the two-electron contribution to the ground state of helium-like krypton. Such a measurement would then constitute a test of quantum electrodynamics to second order.

Cold atoms, driven by a laser and simultaneously coupled to the quantum field of an optical resonator, may self-organize in periodic structures. These structures are supported by the optical lattice, which emerges from the laser light they scatter into the cavity mode and form when the laser intensity exceeds a threshold value. We study theoretically the quantum ground state of these structures above the pump threshold of self-organization by mapping the atomic dynamics of the self-organized crystal to a Bose-Hubbard model. We find that the quantum ground state of the self-organized structure can be the one of a Mott insulator, depending on the pump strength of the driving laser. For very large pump strengths, where the intracavity-field intensity is maximum and one would expect a Mott-insulator state, we find intervals of parameters where the phase is compressible. These states could be realized in existing experimental setups.

We study the ground-state phase diagram of ultracold dipolar gases in highly anisotropic traps. Starting from a one-dimensional geometry, by ramping down the transverse confinement along one direction, the gas reaches various planar distributions of dipoles. At large linear densities, when the dipolar gas exhibits a crystal-like phase, critical values of the transverse frequency exist below which the configuration exhibits transverse patterns. These critical values are found by means of a classical theory, and are in full agreement with classical Monte Carlo simulations. The study of the quantum system is performed numerically with Monte Carlo techniques and shows that the quantum fluctuations smoothen the transition and make it completely disappear in a gas phase. These predictions could be experimentally tested and would allow one to reveal the effect of zero-point motion on self-organized mesoscopic structures of matter waves, such as the transverse pattern of the zigzag chain.

The velocity distribution of ground-state titanium ions within a low-temperature plasma resulting from the laser ablation of a titanium target has been investigated. A KrF excimer laser was focused onto the target at moderate fluences (

Dielectronic recombination has been investigated for Delta n = 1 resonances of ground-state Li+(1s(2)) and for Delta n = 0 resonances of metastable Li (+) (1s2s S-3). The ground-state spectrum shows three prominent transitions between 53 and 64 eV, while the metastable spectrum exhibits many transitions with energies

We have carried out a 29-state R-matrix calculation in order to calculate collision strengths and effective collision strengths for the electron impact excitation of S III. The recently developed parallel RMATRX II suite of codes have been used, which perform the calculation in intermediate coupling. Collision strengths have been generated over an electron energy range of 0-12 Ryd, and effective collision strength data have been calculated from these at electron temperatures in the range 1000-100,000 K. Results are here presented for the fine-structure transitions between the ground-state configurations of 3s(2)3p(2) P-3(0,1,2), D-1(2), and S-1(0), and the values given resolve a discrepancy between two previous R-matrix calculations.
