Naomi Block Manners Stern collection of Eleanor Roosevelt correspondence undated, 1941-1962, 1972, 1974, 1976, 1984, 2003

This collection is mainly composed of correspondence between Ms. Stern and Mrs. Roosevelt, spanning the years from their first acquaintance in 1941 to Mrs. Roosevelt's decease in 1962. Letters that hold particular interest concern Ms. Stern's experience at the Summer Student Leadership Institute, and the White House. Additional material in the collection encompasses articles, newsclippings, programs, press releases, and photographs. The articles and newsclippings folder contains information pertaining to Ms. Stern's college career, the first Summer Student Leadership Institute, Mrs. Roosevelt's talk at Community Day, National Youth Association, and a donation of an ambulance to the war effort by Hunter college students. Naomi Block Manners Stern personal folder contains an article Naomi Block wrote in her college magazine, "Echo," describing her perceptions of President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill during her first visit at the White House. Also included is her graduation program, listing Mrs. Roosevelt as the main speaker, a commemoration of President Roosevelt in 1972 in which Ms. Stern took part, an article and press release describing Ms. Stern's career at Revlon, and a 2003 written summary of Ms. Stern's relationship with Mrs. Roosevelt. Photographs were taken by Naomi Block and others at the Summer Leadership Institute in 1941 portray identified fellow students, Mrs. Roosevelt, James Roosevelt, the Roosevelt home in Campobello, and Felix Frankfurter.

Personal and official documents relating to the life of the Strauss family during the years 1902-1940: pre-marital agreement dated February 1902 and June 1904 (Ehe und Erbvertrag); partnership agreement dated on several dates in 1905; variety of Lehrvertraege, passports, documents necessary for emigration and immigration to Italy and USA. The Lehrvertrag is dated 1920, the other documents pertain to the period from 1938 to 1942. "Schulzeugnisse" from the early 1900s.

Gisela Simon, née Stern was born 1931, the daughter of the butcher Louis Stern (born 1891 in Abterode) and Gertrud Stern née Fackenheim (born 1898 in Halle a.d.S.). The family was deported to Theresienstadt in 1942 and immigrated to the United States after liberation.

Potential-distance relationships of clay-water systems considering the Stern theory

This paper deals with the use of Stem theory as applied to a clay-water electrolyte system, which is more realistic to understand the force system at micro level man the Gouy-Chapman theory. The influence of the Stern layer on potential-distance relationship has been presented quantitatively for certain specified clay-water systems and the results are compared with the Gouy-Chapman model. A detailed parametric study concerning the number of adsorption spots on the clay platelet, the thickness of the Stern layer, specific adsorption potential and the value of dielectric constant of the pore fluid in the Stern layer, was carried out. This study investigates that the potential obtained at any distance using the Stern theory is higher than that obtained by the Gouy-Chapman theory. The hydrated size of the ion is found to have a significant influence on the potential-distance relationship for a given clay, pore fluid characteristics and valence of the exchangeable ion.

Fluorescence quenching of biologically active carboxamide by aniline and carbon tetrachloride in different solvents using Stern-Volmer plots

Fluorescence quenching of biologically active carboxamide namely (E)-2-(4-chlorobenzylideneamino)-N-(2-chlorophenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobe nzo[b]thiophene-3-carboxamide [ECNCTTC] by aniline and carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) quenchers in different solvents using steady state method and time resolved method using only one solvent has been carried out at room temperature to understand the role of quenching mechanisms. The Stern-Volmer plot has been found to be linear for all the solvents studied. The probability of quenching per encounter p (p') was determined in all the solvents and was found to be less than unity. Further, from the studies of rate parameters and life time measurements in n-heptane and cyclohexane with aniline and carbon tetrachloride as quenchers have been shown that, the phenomenon of quenching is generally governed by the well-known Stern-Volmer (S-V) plot. The activation energy E(a) (or E(a)') of quenching was determined using the literature values of activation energy of diffusion E(d) and the experimentally determined values of p (or p'). It has been found that, the activation energy E(a) (E(a)') is greater than the activation energy for diffusion E(d) in all solvents. Hence, from the magnitudes of E(a) (or E(a)') as well as p (or p') infer that, the quenching mechanism is not solely due to the material diffusion, but there is also contribution from the activation energy. Indigenous substitutes for "Lignum vitae" for making stern bearings for fishing boats

Difficulties are very often encountered in selecting proper material for making stern bearings for fishing boats. Conventional materials such as white metal, bronze etc. wear out too fast also causing considerable wear to the propeller shaft. Lignum-vitae, a natural wood commonly used for this purpose, is not available on a commercial scale in our country. Results of trials carried out to find out suitable substitutes for lignum-vitae from among indigenous timbers are presented in this paper.

New ground rope for 238 ton stern trawlers

The sea bottom of the Wadge and Pedro Banks are covered with hard corals and rocks, which cause frequent damages to the net and sometimes total loss of the gear (Hamuro, 1966). This has been one of the main reasons why trawling had been restricted to a small area of the Wadge Bank until recent years.

Evaluation of stern trawler operation in the Wadge Bank for economic exploitation of its demersal fish resources

The records of the exploitation of demersal fish resources by trawlers during the past two decades indicated a decline in productivity and uneconomical fishing operations. The possible reasons for the decline can be deduced by analysis of the fishing records of trawlers that have fished in the banks. Such an analysis can also provide a basis for planned management in the exploitation of demersal stocks of fish. This paper attempts to provide such a basis for the Wadge Bank.
