A class of exact, self-similar, time-dependent solutions describing free surface flows under gravity is found which extends the self-propagating class of solutions discovered earlier by Freeman (1972) to those which decay with time.

A modified form of Green's integral theorem is employed to derive the energy identity in any water wave diffraction problem in a single-layer fluid for free-surface boundary condition with higher-order derivatives. For a two-layer fluid with free-surface boundary condition involving higher-order derivatives, two forms of energy identities involving transmission and reflection coefficients for any wave diffraction problem are also derived here by the same method. Based on this modified Green's theorem, hydrodynamic relations such as the energy-conservation principle and modified Haskind–Hanaoka relation are derived for radiation and diffraction problems in a single as well as two-layer fluid.

The low-T-c layered superconductor 2H-NbSe2 shows remarkable results for free flux-flow Hall effect. At low magnetic fields, the Nozieres-Vinen result of a field-independent Hall angle appears to hold. At larger fields, a marked departure occurs leading to an extremely sharp and pronounced minimum slightly below H-c2, unaccounted for in the standard theoretical models. The results suggest the existence of collective dynamics and phase transitions (such as melting) in a clean flux line lattice.

Exact free surface flows with shear in a compressible barotropic medium are found, extending the authors' earlier work for the incompressible medium. The barotropic medium is of finite extent in the vertical direction, while it is infinite in the horizontal direction. The ''shallow water'' equations for a compressible barotropic medium, subject to boundary conditions at the free surface and at the bottom, are solved in terms of double psi-series, Simple wave and time-dependent solutions are found; for the former the free surface is of arbitrary shape while for the latter it is a damping traveling wave in the horizontal direction, For other types of solutions, the height of the free surface is constant either on lines of constant acceleration or on lines of constant speed. In the case of an isothermal medium, when gamma = 1, we again find simple wave and time-dependent solutions.

The unsteady free convection flow over an infinite vertical porous plate, which moves with time-dependent velocity in an ambient fluid, has been studied. The effects of the magnetic field and Hall current are included in the analysis. The buoyancy forces arise due to both the thermal and mass diffusion. The partial differential equations governing the flow have been solved numerically using both the implicit finite difference scheme and the difference-differential method. For the steady case, analytical solutions have also been obtained. The effect of time variation on the skin friction, heat transfer and mass transfer is very significant. Suction increases the skin friction coefficient in the primary flow, and also the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers, but the skin friction coefficient in the secondary flow is reduced. The effect of injection is opposite to that of suction. The buoyancy force, injection and the Hall parameter induce an overshoot in the velocity profiles in the primary flow which changes the velocity gradient from a negative to a positive value, but the magnetic field and suction reduce this velocity overshoot.

Analyses of the invariants of the velocity gradient ten- sor were performed on flow fields obtained by DNS of compressible plane mixing layers at convective Mach num- bers Mc=0:15 and 1.1. Joint pdfs of the 2nd and 3rd invariants were examined at turbulent/nonturbulent (T/NT) boundaries—defined as surfaces where the local vorticity first exceeds a threshold fraction of the maximum of the mean vorticity. By increasing the threshold from very small lev-els, the boundary points were moved closer into the turbulent region, and the effects on the pdfs of the invariants were ob-served. Generally, T/NT boundaries are in sheet-like regions at both Mach numbers. At the higher Mach number a distinct lobe appears in the joint pdf isolines which has not been ob-served/reported before. A connection to the delayed entrain-ment and reduced growth rate of the higher Mach number flow is proposed.

In Incompressible Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH), a pressure Poisson equation (PPE) is solved to obtain a divergence free velocity field. When free surfaces are simulated using this method a Dirichlet boundary condition for pressure at the free surface has to be applied. In existing ISPH methods this is achieved by identifying free surface particles using heuristically chosen threshold of a parameter such as kernel sum, density or divergence of the position, and explicitly setting their pressure values. This often leads to clumping of particles near the free surface and spraying off of surface particles during splashes. Moreover, surface pressure gradients in flows where surface tension is important are not captured well using this approach. We propose a more accurate semi-analytical approach to impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the free surface. We show the efficacy of the proposed algorithm by using test cases of elongation of a droplet and dam break. We perform two dimensional simulations of water entry and validate the proposed algorithm with experimental results. Further, a three dimensional simulation of droplet splash is shown to compare well with the Volume-of-Fluid simulations. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report on an experimental study of the vertical impact of a concave nosed axisymmetric body on a free surface. Previous studies have shown that bodies with a convex nose, like a sphere, produce a well defined splash with a relatively large cavity behind the model. In contrast, we find that with a concave nose, there is hardly a splash and the cavity extent is greatly reduced. This may be explained by the fact that in the concave nosed case, the initial impact is between a confined air pocket and the free surface unlike in the convex nosed case. From measurements of the unsteady pressure in the concave nose portion, we show that in this case, the maximum pressures are significantly lower than the classically expected ``water hammer'' pressures and also lower than those generally measured on other geometries. Thus, the presence of an air pocket in the case of a concave nosed body adds an interesting dimension to the classical problem of impact of solid bodies on to a free surface. A non-contact optical method, consisting of a projecting grating technique for the relative measurement of a surface, and a technique of absolute measurement at a fixed point on the surface, are applied to measure the free surface vibration in a liquid bridge of half floating zone with small typical scale of a few of mm for emphasizing the thermocapillary effect in comparison with the effect of buoyancy. The radii variations in both longitudinal and azimuthal directions are obtained, and, then, the feature of surface wave could be analyzed in detail. The results show that there are values of principal oscillatory frequencies at different positions of free surface. The amplitudes of surface waves in longitudinal and azimuthal directions are several mum and several tenths of mum in order of magnitude. The phase of two-dimensional surface waves is different at different height for fixed cross section or at different azimuthal angle for fixed height. The wave features are discussed for the cases of typical parameter ranges.

Projecting an orthographical grating mask (20pl/mm) on the surface of a small liquid bridge and receiving the reflected distortion image, one can calculate out reversely the shape of free surface of a liquid bridge. In this way we measured the surface shape of a small floating zone and the two-dimensional deformation of its vibration. The mechanism of thermocapillary oscillatory convection and the three-dimensional variation of the free surface are revealed experimentally. The principle for space experiment has been studied in our laboratory.

Free surface deformations of thermocapillary convection in a small liquid bridge of half floating-zone are studied in the present paper. The relative displacement and phase difference of free surface oscillation are experimentally studied, and the features of free surface oscillation for various applied temperature differences are obtained. It is discovered that there is a sort of surface waves having the character of small perturbation, and having a wave mode of unusually large amplitude in one corner region of the liquid bridge.
