2-Aryl-substituted imidazo[4,5-f]-1,10-phenanthrolines were used as building blocks for metal-containing liquid crystals (metallomesogens). Imidazo[4,5-f]-1,10-phenanthrolines are versatile ligands because they can form stable complexes with various d-block transition metals, including platinum(II) and rhenium(I), as well as with lanthanide(III) and uranyl ions and they can easily be structurally modified by a judicious choice of benzaldehyde precursor. None of the ligands designed for this study were liquid-crystalline. However, mesomorphism could be induced by their coordination to various metallic fragments. The thermal behavior of the metal complexes depended on the metal-to-ligand ratio and the substitution pattern of the coordinating ligands. Complexes with a metal-to-ligand ratio of 1:1 [ML, with M = Pt(II), Re(I)] were not liquid-crystal line. The lanthanide(III) complexes with a metal-to-ligand ratio of 1:2 [ML2 with M = Ln(III)] formed an enantiotropic cubic mesophase or were not liquid-crystalline, depending on the nature of the lanthanide(III) ion and the substitution pattern of the ligands. A 1:3 uranyl complex of the type [ML3](2+) exhibited a hexagonal columnar mesophase over a broad temperature range. Self-assembled monolayers of a europium(III) complex were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy, which revealed that the complex formed well-ordered structures over long distances at the 1-octanoic acid-graphite interface. The rhenium(I) complexes and the europium(III) complexes with 2-thenoyl-trifluoroacetonate or dibenzoylmethanate and imidazo[4,5-f]-1,10-phenanthroline showed good luminescence properties.

Highly luminescent anionic samarium(III) beta-diketonate and dipicolinate complexes were dissolved in the imidazolium ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C(6)mim][Tf2N]. The solubility of the complexes in the ionic liquid was ensured by a careful choice of the countercation of the samarium(III) complex. The samarium(III) complexes that were considered are [C(6)mim][SM(tta)(4)], where tta is 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate; [C(6)mim][Sm(nta)(4)], where nta is 2-naphthoyltrifluoroacetonate; [C(6)mim][Sm(hfa)(4)], where hfa is hexafluoroacetylacetonate; and [choline](3)-[Sm(dpa)(3)], where dpa is pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate (dipicolinate) and [choline](+) is (2-hydroxyethyl)trimethyl ammonium. The crystal structures of the tetrakis samarium(III) P-diketonate complexes revealed a distorted square antiprismatic coordination for the samarium(III) ion in all three cases. Luminescence spectra were recorded for the samarium(III) complexes dissolved in the imidazolium ionic liquid as well as in a conventional solvent, that is, acetonitrile or water for the beta-diketonate and dipicolinate complexes, respectively. These experiments demonstrate that [C(6)mim][Tf2N] is a suitable spectroscopic solvent for studying samarium(III) luminescence. High-luminescence quantum yields were observed for the samarium(III) beta-diketonate complexes in solution.

The ferrocene-derivatives bis(ferrocenyl-ethynyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (Fc(2)phen) and ferrocenoyltrifluoroacetone (Hfta) have been used to synthesize ferrocene-containing rare-earth beta-diketonate complexes. The complexes [Ln(tta)(3)(Fc(2)phen)] and [Ln(fta)(3)(phen)] (where Ln = La, Nd, Eu, Yb) show structural similarities to the tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate)(1,10-phenanthroline)lanthanide(III) complexes, [Ln(tta)(3)(phen)]. The coordination number of the lanthanide ion is 8, and the coordination sphere can be described as a distorted dodecahedron. However, the presence of the ferrocene moieties shifts the ligand absorption bands of the rare-earth complexes to longer wavelengths so that the complexes can be excited not only by ultraviolet radiation but also by visible light of wavelengths up to 420 nm. Red photoluminescence is observed for the europium(III) complexes and near-infrared photoluminescence for the neodymium(III) and ytterbium(III) complexes. The presence of the ferrocene groups makes the rare-earth complexes hydrophobic and well-soluble in apolar organic solvents.

Luminescent ionogels were prepared by doping an europium( III) tetrakis beta-diketonate complex into an imidazolium ionic liquid, followed by immobilization of the ionic liquid by confinement in a silica network. The ionogels were obtained by a non-hydrolytic method as perfect monoliths featuring both the transparency of silica and the ionic conductivity performances of ionic liquids. The ionogels contain 80 vol % of ionic liquid. The organic-inorganic hybrid materials showed a very intense red photoluminescence under ultraviolet irradiation. The red emission has a very high coloric purity.

Anhydrous neodymium(III) iodide and erbium(Ill) iodide were dissolved in carefully dried batches of the ionic liquid 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C(12)mim][Tf2N]. Provided that the ionic liquid had a low water content, intense near-infrared emission could be observed for both the neodymium(III) ion and for the erbium(III) ion. Luminescence lifetimes have been measured, and the quantum yield of the neodymium(III) sample has been measured. Exposure of the hygroscopic samples to atmospheric moisture conditions caused a rapid decrease of the luminescence intensities. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lanthanide(III) complexes of p-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(p-NBSA)(3), m-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(m-NBSA)(3), and 2,4-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(2,4-NBSA)(3), were prepared, characterized and examined as catalyst for the nitration of benzene, toluene, xylenes, naphthalene, bromobenzene and chlorobenzene. The initial screening of the catalysts showed that lanthanum(III) complexes were more effective than the corresponding ytterbium(III) complexes, and that catalysts containing the bulky 2,4-NBSA ligand were less effective than the catalyst containing p-NBSA (nosylate) or m-NBSA ligands. Examination of a series of Ln(p-NBSA)(3) and Ln(m-NBSA)(3) catalysts revealed that there is a clear correlation between the ionic radii of the lanthanide(III) ions and the yields of nitration, with the lighter lanthanides being more effective. The X-ray single crystal structure of Yb(m-NBSA)(3).6H(2)O shows that two m-NBSA ligands are directly bound to the metal centre while the third ligand is not located in the first coordination sphere, but it is hydrogen bonded to one of the water molecules which is coordinated to ytterbium(III). NMR studies suggest that this structure is preserved under the conditions used in the nitration reaction. The structure of Yb(m-NBSA)(3) is markedly different from the structure of the well-known ytterbium(III) triflate catalyst. The coordination of the nitrobenzenesulfonate counterion to the lanthanide(III) ion suggests that steric effects might play an important role in determining the efficiency of these novel nitration catalysts. The kinetics of reductive dissolution of NaBiO3, by Mn-II and Ce-III ions are studied as a function of [Mn-II] or [Ce-III], [Bi-III], [H+] and temperature. They fit a simple inverse-cubic rate law and can be readily interpreted using a mechanism in which the rate-determining step is the reaction between an adsorbed reducing species (i.e. a Mn-II or Ce-III ion) and its associated surface site; protonation of the surface site promotes the rate of reaction. The rate of dissolution decreases with increasing initial concentration of Bi-III ions owing to competitive inhibition by the latter species. A kinetic model, based on this mechanism, is applied and provides a quantitative description of the observed kinetics.

New tri-functional ligands of the type R2NCCCH2SCH2CCNR2 (where R = iso-propyl, n-butyl or iso-butyl) were prepared and characterized. The coordination chemistry of these ligands with uranyl and lanthanum(III) nitrates was studied by using the IR, (HNMR)-H-1 and elemental analysis methods. Structures for the compounds [UO2(NO3)(2)((Pr2NCOCH2SCH2CONPr2)-Pr-i-Pr-i)] [UO2(NO3)(2)((Bu2NCOCH2SCH2CONBu2)-Bu-i-Bu-i)(2)] [La(NO3)(3)((Pr2NCOCH2SCH2CONPr2)-Pr-i-Pr-i)(2)] and [La(NO3)(3)((Bu2NCOCH2SCH2CONBu2)-Bu-i-Bu-i)(2)] were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. These structures show that the ligand acts as a bidentate chelating ligand and bonds through both the carbamoyl groups to the uranyl and lanthanum(III) nitrate groups. Solvent extraction studies show that the ligand can extract the uranyl ion from the nitric acid medium but does not show any ability to extract the americium (III) ion. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The ability of new hydrophobic tridentate ligands based on 2,6-bis(benziinidazol-2-yl)pyridine, 2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridine and 2,6-bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)pyridine to selectively extract americium(III) from europium(III) was measured. The most promising ligand-2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)-4-(2-decyl-1-tetradecyloxy)pyridine L-9 was found to give separation factors (SFAm/Eu) of up to 70 when used to extract cations from 0.02-0.10 M HNO3 into TPH in synergy with 2-bromodecanoic acid. Six structures of lanthanide complexes with 2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridine L-6 were then determined to evaluate the types of species that are likely to be involved in the separation process. Three structural types were observed, namely [LnL(6)(NO3)(3)(H2O)2], 11-coordinate only for La, [LnL(6) (NO3)(3) (CH3CN)], 10-coordinate for Pr, Nd and Eu and [LnL(6) (NO3)(3)(H2O)], L 10-coordinate for Eu and Gd. Quantum Mechanics calculations were carried out on the tridentate ligands to elucidate the conformational preferences of the ligands in the free state and protonated and diprotonated forms and to assess the electronic properties of the ligands for comparison with other terdentate ligands used in lanthanide/actinide separation processes.

New hydrophobic, tridentate nitrogen heterocyclic reagents (BATPs) such as 2,6-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobenzo[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl) pyridine (1) and 2,6-bis(9,9,10,10-tetramethyl-9,10-dihydro-1,2,4-triaza-anthrane-3-yl) pyridine (2) have been studied. I is resistant to hydrolysis in 3 M nitric acid, whereas 2 is resistant to both acid hydrolysis and radiolysis. The molecules are able to give significantly enhanced separations of americium(III) from an excess of europium(III) in nitric acid. Typically, for 1 D-Am = 500 and SFAm,/Eu = 5000 compared with D-Am = 30 and SFAm /Eu = 400 with the reference molecule 2,6-bis(isopropyl[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl) pyridine (7). In order to increase the stability of 1 and 2, the labile alpha-benzylic hydrogens that are present in 7 have been replaced by alkyl groups. Three molecules of 1 are able to enclose completely the coordination sphere of the M(III) in the crystal structure of [Y(1)(3)][Y(NO3)(5)]center dot NO3 center dot 2.5H(2)O.

It has been established that 6-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridines (R,hemi-BTPs) have properties which are intermediate between those of the terpyridines and the bis(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridines (BTPs). However, they resemble the terpyridines much more closely than the BTPs. It has been shown that Et, hemi-BTP when dissolved in TPH-a dodecane-like solvent-is a selective reagent for the separation of americium(III) from europium(III). Solution NMR in acetonitrile largely confirmed the crystallographic results. There was no evidence for a 1 : 3 complex cation, or for significant differences between metal(III)-N distances for the pyridine and 1,2,4-triazine rings. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding plays a crucial role in the formation of metal coordination spheres, which explains the differences between the terpyridyl, R,hemi-BTPs and the BTPs. Protonation of the R,hemi-BTPs facilitates a conformational change which is necessary for complexation.

Multiple parallel synthesis and evaluation have been combined in order to identify new nitrogen heterocycles for the partitioning of minor actinides(III) such as americium(III) from lanthanides such as europium(Ill). An array of triazine-containing molecules was made using multiple parallel syntheses from diketones and amide hydrazides. An excess of each of the resulting purified reagents was dissolved in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane containing 2-bromodecanoic acid, and equilibrated with an aqueous solution containing the radiotracers Eu-152 and Am-241 in nitric acid ([Eu] + [Am] < 400 nanomol dm(-3)). Gamma counting of the organic and aqueous phases led to the identification of several new reagents for the selective extraction of americium(III). In particular, 6-(2-pyridyl)-2-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazaphenyl)pyridines were found to be effective reagents for the separation of americium(III) from europium(III), (SFAm/Eu was ca. 30 in [HNO3] = 0.013 mol/L).

Co(NH3)(5)Cl]Cl-2 forms neutral 1:3 complex by reaction with aromatic thiohydrazides, i.e. thiobenzhydrazide, o-hydroxythiobenzhydrazide, thiophen-2-thiohydrazide and furan-2-thiohydrazide. All these complexes are diamagnetic and have been characterized by elemental analysis and combination of spectroscopic methods. Cyclic voltammometry of the complexes shows irreversible metal centered and ligand centered electron transfer reactions. One complex, tris-o-hydroxythiobenzhydrazidocobalt(III),has been crystallized from DMSO solution to produce solvated crystals and its structure has been established by X-ray crystallography. Cobalt(III) ion is linked through three hydrazinic nitrogen and three sulfur atoms of three identical deprotonated ligand molecules in a distorted octahedral environment. Involvement of -OH group in intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonding is crucial for crystal formation.

Cobalt(III) complexes of diacetyl monooxime benzoyl hydrazone (dmoBH(2)) and diacetyl monooxime isonicotinoyl hydrazone (dmoInH(2)) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic methods. The X-ray crystal structures of the two hydrazone ligands, as well as that of the cobalt(III) complex [Co(III)(dmoInH)(2)]Cl center dot 2H(2)O, are also reported. It is found that in the cobalt(III) complexes the Co(III) ion is hexa-coordinated, the hydrazone ligands behaving as mono-anionic tridentate O,N,N donors. In the [Co(III)(dmoInH) (2)]Cl center dot 2H(2)O complex, the amide and the oxime hydrogens are deprotonated for both the ligands, while the isonicotine nitrogens are protonated. In the [Co(III)(d-moBH)(2)] Cl complex, only the amide nitrogens are deprotonated. It is shown that the additional hydrogen bonding capability of the isonicotine nitrogen results in different conformation and supramolecular structure for dmoInH(2), compared to dmoBH(2), in the solid state. Comparing the structure of the [CoIII(dmoInH)(2)]Cl center dot 2H(2)O with that of the Zn(II) complex of the same ligand, reported earlier, it is seen that the metal ion has a profound influence on the supramolecular structure, due to change in geometrical dispositions of the chelate rings.
