Four corrosion inhibitors namely sodium nitrite, sodium monofluorophosphate, ethanolamine and an alkanolamine-based mixture were studied by immersing mild steel bars for 42 days in model electrolytes of varied pH and chloride concentration which were intended to simulate the pore solution phase present within carbonated and/or chloride-contaminated concrete. Site trials were carried out on sodium monofluorophosphate and the alkanolamine-based inhibitor to study their depth of penetration into concrete. The influence of various carbonating atmospheres on the pore solution chemistry and microstructure of hydrated cement paste was investigated. Physical realkalisation of carbonated cement paste and a calcium nitrite-based corrosion rehabilitation system for chloride-contaminated cement paste were investigated by monitoring ionic transport within the pore solution phase of laboratory specimens. The main findings were as follows: 1,Sodium nitrite, sodium monofluorophosphate, ethanolamine and the alkanolamine-based mixture all behaved as passivating anodic inhibitors of steel corrosion in air-saturated aqueous solutions of varied pH and chloride concentration. 2,Sodium monofluorophosphate failed to penetrate significantly into partially carbonated site concrete when applied as recommended by the supplier. Phosphate and fluoride penetrated 5mm into partially carbonated site concrete treated with sodium monofluorophosphate. 3,The ethanolamine component of the alkanolamine-based inhibitor was found to have penetrated significant depths into partially carbonated site concrete. 4,Carbonating hydrated cement paste over saturated solutions of sodium nitrite resulted in significant concentrations of nitrite in the pore solution of the carbonated paste. Saturated solutions of sodium chloride, ammonium nitrate, magnesium nitrate and sodium dichromate were investigated and identified as alternatives for controlling the relative humidity of the carbonating environment. 5,Hardened carbonated cement paste can by physically realkalised to a limited extent due to the diffusion of hydroxyl ions under saturated conditions. A substantial proportion of the hydroxyl ions that diffused into the carbonated cement paste however, became bound into the cement matrix. Hydroxyl ion concentrations remained below 5mmol/l within the pore solution of the realkalised cement paste. 6, Nitrite ions penetrated significant distances by diffusion within the pore solution of saturated uncarbonated hydrated cement paste.

The chemical composition of surface associated metabolites of two Fucus species (Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus serratus) was analysed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to describe temporal patterns in chemical surface composition. Method: The two perennial brown macroalgae F. vesiculosus and F. serratus were sampled monthly at Bülk, outer Kiel Fjord, Germany (54°27'21 N / 10°11'57 E) over an entire year (August 2012 - July 2013). Per month and species six non-fertile Fucus individuals were collected from mixed stands at a depth of 0.5 m under mid water level. For surface extraction approx. 50 g of the upper 5-10 cm apical thalli tips were cut off per species. The surface extraction of Fucus was performed according to the protocol of de Nys and co-workers (1998) with minor modifications (see Rickert et al. 2015). GC/EI-MS measurements were performed with a Waters GCT premier (Waters, Manchester, UK) coupled to an Agilent 6890N GC equipped with a DB-5 ms 30 m column (0.25 mm internal diameter, 0.25 mM film thickness, Agilent, USA). The inlet temperature was maintained at 250°C and samples were injected in split 10 mode. He carrier gas flow was adjusted to 1 ml min-1. Alkanes were used for referencing of retention times. For further details (GC-MS sample preparation and analysis) see the related publication (Rickert et al. submitted to PLOS ONE).

In Sudanese women with (n = 60) and without (n = 65) pre-eclampsia, circulating lipids, plasma and red cell saturated and monounsaturated fatty (MUFA) acids and dimethyl acetals (DMAs) were investigated. DMAs are an indirect marker of levels of plasmalogens, endogenous antioxidants, which play a critical role in oxidative protection, and cholesterol homeostasis. The pre-eclamptics had higher C18:1n-9 (p < 0.001) and ΣMUFA (p < 0.01) in plasma free fatty acids, C16:1n-7, C18:1n-9, ΣMUFA; 16:0/16:1n-7 (p < 0.01) in erythrocyte choline phosphoglycerides (ePC) and 16:1n-7, 18:1n-7 and 16:0/16:1n-7 (p < 0.01) in erythrocyte ethanolamine phosphoglycerides (ePE). In contrast, the DMAs 18:0, 18:1 and ΣDMAs in ePE, and 16:0, 18:0 and ΣDMAs in ePC were reduced (p < 0.001) in the pre-eclamptic women. This study of pregnant women with high carbohydrate and low fat background diet suggests pre-eclampsia is associated with oxidative stress and enhanced activity of the microsomal enzyme stearyl-CoA desaturase (delta 9 desaturase), as assessed by palmitic/palmitoleic (C16:0/C16:n-1) and stearic/oleic (C18/C18:1n-9) ratios.

Lactobacillus rossiae is an obligately hetero-fermentative lactic acid bacterium, which can be isolated from a broad range of environments including sourdoughs, vegetables, fermented meat and flour, as well as the gastrointestinal tract of both humans and animals. In order to unravel distinctive genomic features of this particular species and investigate the phylogenetic positioning within the genus Lactobacillus, comparative genomics and phylogenomic approaches, followed by functional analyses were performed on L. rossiae DSM 15814(T), showing how this type strain not only occupies an independent phylogenetic branch, but also possesses genomic features underscoring its biotechnological potential. This strain in fact represents one of a small number of bacteria known to encode a complete de novo biosynthetic pathway of vitamin B-12 (in addition to other B vitamins such as folate and riboflavin). In addition, it possesses the capacity to utilize an extensive set of carbon sources, a characteristic that may contribute to environmental adaptation, perhaps enabling the strain's ability to populate different niches.

The rotational spectroscopy of several sulfur bearing molecules and their 1:1 water complex, cysteamine, cysteamine monohydrate, 1-thioglycerol and 1-propanethiol were studied in the micro-wave and (or) millimeter-wave range. Precise laboratory spectra and conformational information were obtained. For cysteamine, the conformational space (at the B3LYP-GD3(BJ)/Def2-TZVP level) and the measurement and analysis of its rotational spectra in the 6 - 18 and 59.6 - 120 GHz are reported. The hyperfine structure of the rotational spectra was observed and analyzed for the first time. Based on the measured spectra, a search of the different conformers of cysteamine was performed toward the G+0.693-0.027 molecular cloud. We computed the upper limit of the ratio of ethanolamine to cysteamine, which is >0.8âˆ5.3. For the cysteamine monohydrate, the conformational space was explored (at the B3LYP-GD3(BJ)/Def2-TZVP level). The rotational spectra of the cysteamine monohydrate complex have been assigned in the frequency range 6 â 18.5 GHz. The global minimum, Conf A1, was the only observed one. The 34S isotopologue of Conf A1 was observed in natural abundance, while 18O isotopologue was detected by introducing the H218O. In this conformer, the water molecule plays both proton donor and acceptor roles, forming a OHw···N interaction, a SH···Ow interaction and a CH···Ow interaction. The conformational space of 1-thioglycerol has been characterized by quantum mechanical calculation and its rotational spectrum has been recorded and analyzed in the frequency range 59.6 - 78.4 GHz. The global minimum of 1-thioglycerol is gTgâGgâ and were detected together with gTgâTg and gGgGâg, while the two detected conformers are gâGâgGgâ and tGgGg. The high-resolution rotational spectrum of 1-propanethiol in the frequency range 59.6 â 78.4 GHz was measured. Two conformers, Gg and Tg, were observed and their spectra were analyzed. Considering the overall conformational space calculated at the B3LYP-GD3(BJ)/Def2-TZVP level they are among the lowest energy conformers.
