On Locally Gabriel Geometric Graphs

Let be a set of points in the plane. A geometric graph on is said to be locally Gabriel if for every edge in , the Euclidean disk with the segment joining and as diameter does not contain any points of that are neighbors of or in . A locally Gabriel graph(LGG) is a generalization of Gabriel graph and is motivated by applications in wireless networks. Unlike a Gabriel graph, there is no unique LGG on a given point set since no edge in a LGG is necessarily included or excluded. Thus the edge set of the graph can be customized to optimize certain network parameters depending on the application. The unit distance graph(UDG), introduced by Erdos, is also a LGG. In this paper, we show the following combinatorial bounds on edge complexity and independent sets of LGG: (i) For any , there exists LGG with edges. This improves upon the previous best bound of . (ii) For various subclasses of convex point sets, we show tight linear bounds on the maximum edge complexity of LGG. (iii) For any LGG on any point set, there exists an independent set of size .

Saber y poder, prodigios ambiguos e interpretación medieval en el Libro de Alexandre y el Poema de Fernán Gonçález

Resumen: Tanto en el Libro de Alexandre como en el Poema de Fernán Gonçález se presentan prodigios de signifi cación ambigua: el eclipse en el LA, el caballero tragado por la tierra y la serpiente voladora en el PFG. Los episodios en que aparecen insertos estos elementos extraordinarios o sobrenaturales ofrecen una serie de similitudes: el temor de los ejércitos y la habilidad retórica que se despliega para reinterpretar el signo, volverlo a favor del héroe y enardecer así a sus hombres. El objetivo de este trabajo es examinar estos episodios y su signifi cación en el marco de cada uno de los poemas, centrándonos en los problemas de la interpretación y la asignación de sentido, y la relación entre saber y poder que se postula.

Et avié una viña rica, de mejor non nos cala” : la representación del palacio de Poro y la viña áurea en el Libro de Alexandre, diálogos intertextuales y funciones literarias

Resumen: Según se narra en el Libro de Alexandre, después de la muerte de Darío III, rey de los persas y opresor de los macedonios, Alejandro comienza su exploración hacia el Oriente profundo, en busca del sátrapa indio, Poro. Al hallar los palacios de este, el macedonio se encuentra con una serie de objetos que podrían integrar un catálogo de maravillas mecánicas y artificiales, entre las que destaca una viña hecha de oro y piedras preciosas que el gobernante oriental posee en los jardines del alcázar (cc. 2126-2131). El trabajo cuyo resumen presento aquí pretende, en primer lugar, develar las funciones intra y extratextuales que posee el episodio, además de –en segunda instancia– defender la idea de la representación de la viña áurea como un motivo recurrente en las descripciones de palacios orientales en la literatura medieval y en obras como la Historia de Proellis, el Roman d’Aeneas y textos que se insertan propiamente en la tradición de libros de viajes, como el Livre des merveilles du monde de Jean de Mandeville.

Amor, muerte y esperanza : reflexiones desde Gabriel Marcel

Resumen: No vivimos solos ni morimos solos. Por ello el acompañamiento del enfermo terminal desde una actitud de amor, sostenido en su base por la esperanza trascendente, es ciertamente necesario como actitud cristiana de donación, y su reflexión se incorpora a toda antropología que no deje de lado la tanatología. Si la antropología margina el “thanatos”, se torna fragmentaria e incompleta. Morir no es el fin de la biografía que le “pasa” a los demás: es la experiencia universal a la cual cada uno ha de prepararse. Este asunto será analizado teniendo como guía a un destacado filósofo francés, Gabriel Marcel, quien, de algún modo, ha dado luz con sus escritos y su preocupación vital sobre esta temática.

Movement of yellowtail snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus Block 1790) and black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci Poey 1860) in the northern Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary as determined by acoustic telemetry

We tagged a total of 14 yellowtail snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus Bloch 1790) and black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci Poey 1860) inside the Conch Reef Research Only Area (a no-take marine reserve) in the northern Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in November 2001. Both species are heavily exploited in the region. Our objective was to characterize site fidelity and movement behavior along the reef tract to the north and south of the release point. Fishes were collected by baited hook and line from the surface, surgically-tagged with coded-acoustic transmitters, and returned to the reef by snorkelers. Tracking of fish movement behavior was conducted by five acoustic receivers deployed on the seafloor from Davis Reef in the south to Pickles Reef in the north. Fishes were tracked for up to eight months. Results indicated that the majority of signal detections for individual fish from both species were recorded at the two Conch Reef receivers. Limited movement from Conch Reef to Davis Reef was recorded, but no signal detections were recorded at the two sites to the north of Conch Reef. These results suggest that both species show site fidelity to Conch Reef. Future studies will seek to characterize this site fidelity with increased temporal and spatial resolution at Conch Reef. Considerada a mais importante de Sisson, esta obra teve tiragem reduzida e muitos exemplares foram desmanchados por antiquários que emolduravam os retratos, vendendo-os por alto preço. Segundo Borba de Moraes, "é muito difícil encontrar-se hoje em dia um exemplar perfeito e em boas condições" e que "só muito raramente aparece um exemplar à venda."

Legal dimensions of the Chinese experience in Los Angeles, 1860-1880

On October 24, 1871, a massacre of eighteen Chinese in Los Angeles brought the small southern California settlement into the national spotlight. Within a few days, news of this “night of horrors” was reported in newspapers across the country. This massacre has been cited in Asian American narratives as the first documented outbreak of ethnic violence against a Chinese community in the United States. This is ironic because Los Angeles’ small population has generally placed it on the periphery in historical studies of the California anti-Chinese movement. Because the massacre predated Los Angeles’ organized Chinese exclusion movements of the late 1870s, it has often been erroneously dismissed as an aberration in the history of the city.

The violence of 1871 was an outburst highlighting existing community tensions that would become part of public debate by decade’s close. The purpose of this study is to insert the massacre into a broader context of anti-Chinese sentiments, legal discrimination, and dehumanization in nineteenth century Los Angeles. While a second incident of widespread anti-Chinese violence never occurred, brutal attacks directed at Chinese small businessmen and others highlighted continued community conflict. Similarly, economic rivalries and concerns over Chinese prostitution that underlay the 1871 massacre were manifest in later campaigns of economic discrimination and vice suppression that sought to minimize Chinese influence within municipal limits. An analysis of the massacre in terms of anti-Chinese legal, social and economic strategies in nineteenth-century Los Angeles will elucidate these important continuities.

Structural geology of the region between Pacoima and Little Tujunga Canyons, San Gabriel Mountains, California

An area of about 25 square miles in the western part of the San Gabriel Mountains was mapped on a scale of 1000 feet to the inch. Special attention was given to the structural geology, particularly the relations between the different systems of faults, of which the San Gabriel fault system and the Sierra Madre fault system are the most important ones. The present distribution and relations of the rocks suggests that the southern block has tilted northward against a more stable mass of old rocks which was raised up during a Pliocene or post-Pliocene orogeny. It is suggested that this northward tilting of the block resulted in the group of thrust faults which comprise the Sierra Madre fault system. It is show that this hypothesis fits the present distribution of the rocks and occupies a logical place in the geologic history of the region as well or better than any other hypothesis previously offered to explain the geology of the region.

San Gabriel Valley sewerage system

The disposal of sewage is the most important item in public sanitation. It is the most important present day problem in every city whether large or small. The direct cause of the majority of epidemics is the contamination of the water supply of the city by the excreta of man or animal. Public health varies directly as public sanitation, and if the public sanitation be good, the liability of sickness caused by contamination of the water supply is greatly lessened. When a city outgrows its sewerage system the public health becomes endangered. There are two causes for the increased amount of sewerage, increase in population and increase in industrial and manufacturing wastes. The main problem in this connection is the ultimate disposal of the matter which reaches the sewers.
