A suit able decision-making on managing a contaminated site characterization program is strongly dependent of the diagnosis process. A detailed diagnosis can be done based on a Conceptual Site Model (CSM) elaboration using high resolution site characterization tools. The piezocone (CPTu) test is a high resolution tool which allows attaching several specific sensors, like the resistivity probe. This hybrid device is called the resistivity piezocone (RCPTu). A simulated geo-environmental site characterization program was performed on an erosion site using different tools (direct push tools soil samplers, hollow stem auger (HSA) drilling and RCPTu tests) to develop the CSM for a site similar to the Brazilian conditions. It was observed a good agreement between the site profiles interpreted by the different methods. The resistivity sensor attached to the piezocone improved the interpretation and the decision-making process on site was significantly better for the CSM elaboration. The RCPTu test data also allowed identifying the hydrogeological heterogeneities. The present study shows that the RCPTu test is also a useful and powerful tool to development an accurate CSM in a Brazilian condition, especially in an approach that prioritizes high resolution geo-environmental investigation. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group.

No contexto brasileiro, a investigação acerca das necessidades educacionais especiais concentra-se no estudo das dificuldades e possibilidades de inclusão desses alunos em classes regulares de ensino, enfatizando os processos de ensino e aprendizagem. Poucos estudos, no Brasil, admitem a família como objeto de análise, embora não se questione a sua importância para o desenvolvimento infantil. Dessa forma, com base no modelo bioecológico e na teoria estrutural sistêmica, admitindo-se a família como um campo de desenvolvimento comum a todos os membros faz-se necessário conhecer o modo como ela se estrutura para atender as demandas decorrentes da necessidade especial de seu filho e os efeitos dessa dinâmica nos demais membros. A partir disso objetivou-se descrever, a estrutura e a dinâmica de famílias de crianças com necessidades educacionais especiais, além de: analisar as interações e relações estabelecidas dentro de cada subsistema (conjugal, fraternal, parental) e entre eles, assim como identificar a organização familiar, a partir dos mecanismos de coesão e hierarquia de acordo com o modelo estrutural sistêmico. Como estratégia de pesquisa utilizou-se o estudo de casos múltiplos, com duas famílias de crianças com necessidades educacionais especiais, sendo uma menina surda, de dez anos, e um menino, de doze anos, com dificuldades de aprendizagem. Os instrumentos e técnicas aplicados foram: Roteiro de Entrevista Semi-Estruturado, Inventário de Rotina (IR), Observação Sistemática, Diário de Campo, Family System Test (FAST) e Genograma. Os escores de proximidade obtidos no FAST foram coerentes com os resultados do IR, demonstrando maior coesão na díade mãe-filho que na díade pai-filho, nas duas famílias; quanto à flexibilidade das fronteiras, em geral, a percepção das famílias foi de fronteiras rígidas, nos sistemas, familiar, parental e fraternal, sendo que, a distribuição de hierarquia foi percebida pela díade parental, nas duas famílias, como sinal de prediletância, para o subsistema fraternal, e dominação, para o parental, o que interferiu nas estruturas relacionais desses subsistemas percebidas pelos membros. Na avaliação do subsistema fraternal, a ausência de poder, representada pelos pais e a representação dessa variável pelas crianças resultou em diferenças de percepção, no grupo. Portanto, esse estudo permitiu, por meio da identificação das relações e percepções dos membros das famílias, a compreensão de sua dinâmica e a influência desta, na trajetória desenvolvimental das crianças e do grupo, a partir, das demandas decorrentes do diagnóstico e das estratégias peculiares a cada família para enfrentar as necessidades especiais de suas crianças. Percebe-se que a família, sendo a principal parceira da escola na educação, precisa ser olhada como um sistema cujas estratégias relacionais são fundamentais para que a criança tenha suas habilidades estimuladas podendo, assim, superar suas dificuldades.

A presente dissertação avalia o desenvolvimento da piscicultura em tanques-rede no reservatório da Usina Hidrelétrica de Tucuruí, no Estado do Pará, a partir de um estudo de caso: o projeto de piscicultura Ipirá, criado por meio um acordo firmado entre a Centrais Elétricas do Norte do Brasil – Eletrobras Eletronorte e um conjunto de famílias que tiveram seus modos de vida impactados pela construção da Hidrelétrica de Tucuruí, como alternativa para a geração de emprego e renda. Avalia-se, mas especificamente qual o impacto do projeto na melhoria das condições de vida das famílias atendidas pelo mesmo sob a perspectiva socioeconômica. Para alcançar os objetivos desse trabalho, utilizou-se além do estudo de caso, o modelo sistêmico para a aqüicultura, em especial os cálculos dos índices para a avaliação da sustentabilidade socioeconômica da aquicultura - IDES, como procedimentos metodológicos. Observou-se que o projeto de piscicultura Ipirá mostra-se potencialmente sustentável do ponto de vista socioeconômico (0,649). Os indicadores aspectos sanitários (0,123), lazer (0,113) e saúde (0,110), apresentaram em ordem decrescente, as principais contribuições na composição do IDES, ao passo que os indicadores renda (0,040) e habitação (0,79), essenciais para a manutenção familiar e condições de bem estar do ser humano, apresentaram os piores resultados. Conclui-se, a partir dos resultados gerados, que o projeto de piscicultura Ipirá não conseguiu alcançar seu objetivo principal: geração de emprego e renda, e demonstra-se não influenciar significativamente na melhoria das condições de vida das famílias atendidas, o que é reforçado pelos dados levantados em campo, onde 86% dos entrevistados sobrevivem com salário igual e menor que 1 salário mínimo mensal, complementado pelo auxílio do seguro defeso e o bolsa família. Por fim, ressalta-se a relevância do projeto Ipirá como um case de política sócio-ambiental com potencial para dinamizar a economia local e em uma perspectiva mais otimista se tornar um modelo a ser replicado e abranger todos os municípios do entorno do reservatório da Usina Hidrelétrica de Tucuruí, desde que as falhas na implantação e no seu gerenciamento sejam sanadas e as devidas providenciais sejam tomadas, como as apontadas pelo presente estudo.

The growing interest in the use of groundwater resources is directly related to the economic advantages that the groundwater exploitation offers when compared to surface waters. This happens especially in large urban centers, such as the city of Americana / SP, where the rivers are increasingly contaminated by household and industrial waste. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the Tubarão Aquifer System, in the city of Americana, to identify and evaluate the spatial distribution of different hydrogeochemical facies as well as understand the rock-fluid interaction through the construction of a conceptual hydrogeochemical model. This study was made based on the recognition of the possible chemical reactions that print the chemical characteristics of groundwater in the area. To do the job, there were two water sampling campaigns of all deep wells used by the City of Americana public water supply. From the results of hydrochemical, classification of water was made by Piper and Stiff diagrams as well as geostatistical data using cluster analysis of principal components. Based on information from the profiles obtained from the survey SIAGAS as well as in geological profiles provided by the city of Americana, we sought to detail the subsurface geology of the Subgroup Itararé in the city of Americana. The results obtained allowed the identification of three hydrochemical types in the study area: Bicarbonated calcium-sodium (1), bicarbonate sodium (2) and sodium chloride (3). The waters have bicarbonate alkaline pH to alkaline and can be considered weakly saline, with electrical conductivity values of around 161 mS / cm. Samples classified as sodium bicarbonate average of 174.99 mS / cm. The pH values ranging from 6.74 to 7.99, averaging 7.52. The Brazilian geo-environmental site characterizations usually do not provide a suitable Conceptual Site Model (CSM). Site assessments are mostly inappropriate and there is a lack of knowledge about the subsurface environment, generated by inconsistent data that will guide risk analyses and remediation projects full of uncertainties, causing delay on closing cases, inefficient remediation and higher global projects costs. The step of data collection must have high priority to develop a suitable CSM,, and it demands more effective high resolution site characterization (HRSC) tools than the traditional ones and, preferably, the decision-making have to be done in the field. This paper presents and discusses two geo-environmental site characterization results, in which the decision-making was done in the field based on high resolution site characterization (HRSC) used together with the traditional ones. These site investigations provided a significant time saving, allowed the detection of subsoil heterogeneities, a proper understanding of the subsurface environmental, and have generated a solid CSM in real-time. These CSM can subsidize remediation projects based on a more reliable data than those that would be obtained in traditional site investigations, concerned just in following the rules established by the environmental agencies.

McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV, Ross Sea region, Antarctica) precipitation exhibits extreme seasonality in ion concentration, 3-5 orders of magnitude between summer and winter precipitation. To identify aerosol sources and investigate causes for the observed amplitude in concentration variability, four snow pits were sampled along a coast-Polar Plateau transect across the MDV. The elevation of the sites ranges from 50 to 2400 m and the distance from the coast from 8 to 93 km. Average chemistry gradients along the transect indicate that most species have either a predominant marine or terrestrial source in the MDV. Empirical orthogonal function analysis on the snow-chemistry time series shows that at least 57% of aerosol deposition occurs concurrently. A conceptual climate model, based on meteorological observations, is used to explain the strong seasonality in the MDV. Our results suggest that radiative forcing of the ice-free valleys creates a surface low-pressure cell during summer which promotes air-mass flow from the Ross Sea. The associated precipitating air mass is relatively warm, humid and contains a high concentration of aerosols. During winter, the MDV are dominated by air masses draining off the East Antarctic ice sheet, that are characterized by cold, dry and low concentrations of aerosols. The strong differences between these two air-mass sources create in the MDV a polar version of the monsoonal flow, with humid, warm summers and dry, cold winters.

We present a conceptual prototype model of a focal plane array unit for the STEAMR instrument, highlighting the challenges presented by the required high relative beam proximity of the instrument and focus on how edge-diffraction effects contribute to the array's performance. The analysis was carried out as a comparative process using both PO & PTD and MoM techniques. We first highlight general differences between these computational techniques, with the discussion focusing on diffractive edge effects for near-field imaging reflectors with high truncation. We then present the results of in-depth modeling analyses of the STEAMR focal plane array followed by near-field antenna measurements of a breadboard model of the array. The results of these near-field measurements agree well with both simulation techniques although MoM shows slightly higher complex beam coupling to the measurements than PO & PTD.

Lateral diffusivity is computed from a tracer release experiment in the northeastern tropical Atlantic thermocline. The uncertainties of the estimates are inferred from a synthetic particle release using a high-resolution ocean circulation model. The main method employed to compute zonal and meridional components of lateral diffusivity is the growth of the second moment of a cloud of tracer. The application of an areal comparison method for estimating tracer-based diffusivity in the field experiments is also discussed. The best estimate of meridional eddy diffusivity in the Guinea Upwelling region at about 300 m depth is estimated to be inline image m2 s-1. The zonal component of lateral diffusivity is estimated to be inline image m2 s-1, while areal comparison method yields areal equivalent zonal diffusivity component of inline image m2 s?1. In comparison to Ky, Kx is about twice larger, resulting from the tracer patch stretching by zonal jets. Employed conceptual jet model indicates that zonal jet velocities of about inline image m s?1 are required to explain the enhancement of the zonal eddy diffusivity component. Finally, different sampling strategies are tested on synthetic tracer release experiments. They indicate that the best sampling strategy is a sparse regular sampling grid covering most of the tracer patch.

Continuous sea salt and mineral dust aerosol records have been studied on the two EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica) deep ice cores. The joint use of these records from opposite sides of the East Antarctic plateau allows for an estimate of changes in dust transport and emission intensity as well as for the identification of regional differences in the sea salt aerosol source. The mineral dust flux records at both sites show a strong coherency over the last 150 kyr related to dust emission changes in the glacial Patagonian dust source with three times higher dust fluxes in the Atlantic compared to the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean (SO). Using a simple conceptual transport model this indicates that transport can explain only 40% of the atmospheric dust concentration changes in Antarctica, while factor 5-10 changes occurred. Accordingly, the main cause for the strong glacial dust flux changes in Antarctica must lie in environmental changes in Patagonia. Dust emissions, hence environmental conditions in Patagonia, were very similar during the last two glacials and interglacials, respectively, despite 2-4 °C warmer temperatures recorded in Antarctica during the penultimate interglacial than today. 2-3 times higher sea salt fluxes found in both ice cores in the glacial compared to the Holocene are difficult to reconcile with a largely unchanged transport intensity and the distant open ocean source. The substantial glacial enhancements in sea salt aerosol fluxes can be readily explained assuming sea ice formation as the main sea salt aerosol source with a significantly larger expansion of (summer) sea ice in the Weddell Sea than in the Indian Ocean sector. During the penultimate interglacial, our sea salt records point to a 50% reduction of winter sea ice coverage compared to the Holocene both in the Indian and Atlantic Ocean sector of the SO. However, from 20 to 80 ka before present sea salt fluxes show only very subdued millennial changes despite pronounced temperature fluctuations, likely due to the large distance of the sea ice salt source to our drill sites.
