This report has been written in the context of this interest and in response to a request from the Department of Health and Children. It follows a Forum on regulatory issues that was held at the IPA in June 2001 and attended by many CAM practitioners. The Minister for Health and Children asked the Institute to build on the discussions at the Forum by preparing a report on possible options in the regulation of CAM practitioners in Ireland. The focus of the report is on regulatory and policy issues in general. It is not within the Instituteâ?Ts competence or brief to comment on more specific clinical or technical issues. The focus of this report is the regulation of complementary therapists and, as such, does not deal directly with the efficacy of such therapies. It is for the consumer to make the choice of which therapy they intend to use. Whether they wish to consult a qualified therapist such as a homeopath or an acupuncturist, a healer, the seventh son of a seventh son, a person reputed to have a cure for a particular ailment or a person with a special skill with bones; the choice is theirs. In the ornamental plant production region of Girona (Spain), which is one of the largest of its kind in southern Europe, most of the surface is irrigated using wide blocked-end furrows. The objectives of this paper were: (1) to evaluate the irrigation scheduling methods used by ornamental plant producers; (2) to analyse different scenarios inorder to assess how they affect irrigation performance; (3) to evaluate the risk of deep percolation; and (4) to calculategross water productivity. A two-year study in a representative commercial field, planted with Prunus cerasifera ‘Nigra’, was carried out. The irrigation dose applied by the farmers was slightly smaller than the required water dose estimated by the use of two different methods: the first based on soil water content, and the second based on evapotranspiration. Distribution uniformity and application efficiency were high, with mean values above 87%. Soil water contentmeasurements revealed that even at the end of the furrow, where the infiltrated water depth was greatest, more than 90% of the infiltrated water was retained in the shallowest 40 cm of the soil; accordingly, the risk of water loss due to deep percolation was minimal. Gross water productivity for ornamental tree production was € 11.70 m–3, approximately 20 times higher than that obtained with maize in the same region

Etant données la complexité et la redondance des réseaux de gènes influençant de nombreux phénotypes, l'étude des rares cas d'un locus unique ayant des effets importants sur de nombreux phénotypes peut fournir des informations cruciales sur l'évolution des traits complexes. Nous avons séquencé le génome de la fourmi de feu Solenopsis invicta pour étudier comment l'expression des gènes détermine les effets majeurs et étendus de deux loci uniques sur le phénotype. Le premier locus concerne la détermination du sexe par le modèle des allèles complémentaires. Ce locus est connu pour déterminer le sexe chez tous les hyménoptères mais n'a été caractérisé que chez les abeilles. Les hétérozygotes pour ce locus se développent en reines diploïdes (ou ouvrières stériles) alors que les homozygotes se développent en mâles diploïdes incapables de produire du sperme et les hémizygotes en mâles haploïdes fertiles. Nous avons comparé l'expression des gènes entre les reines et les deux types de mâles au stade pupe, ainsi que 1 et 11 jours après l'émergence. Nous avons trouvé un changement prononcé de l'expression des gènes chez les mâles diploïdes, passant de très proche de celle des reines au stade pupe à identique aux mâles haploïdes 11 jours après l'émergence. Cela signifie que les mâles diploïdes sont condamnés à être stériles parce que les effets après émergence du locus de détermination du sexe ne per¬mettent pas d'effacer les effets de la ploïdie sur l'expression des gènes pendant le stade pupe, quand la spermatogénèse prend place. Le second locus aux effets majeurs que nous avons étudié est le supergène dit "green beard", qui consiste en 616 gènes couvrant 55% d'un chromosome (13 Mb) et est caractérisé par une absence de recombinaison entre les deux variants du supergène : "Social B" et "Social b" (SB et Sb). Au travers de l'effet "green beard", par lequel les ouvrières avec le supergène Sb discriminent favorablement les reines qui partagent ce supergène de façon perceptible, le génotype des reines fondatrices au niveau de ce supergène détermine l'organisation de la colonie : soit elle contient une seule reine SB/SB, soit plusieurs reines SB/Sb. Nous avons montré que le chromosome Sb a évolué comme le chromosome Y, accumulant probablement des allèles favorables dans des colonies avec plusieurs reines mais défavorables dans des colonies avec une seule reine (cf. gènes sexuellement antagonistes), ainsi que des transposons et des séquences répéti¬tives. Nous avons également montré que le polymorphisme du supergène cause de grandes différences d'expression chez les ouvrières et particulièrement les reines mais pas chez les mâles. Pour comprendre comment le polymorphisme du supergène chez les reines peut affecter l'organisation de la colonie, nous avons comparé l'expression entre les génotypes SB/SB et SB/Sb chez des reines vierges (1 et 11 jours) et des reines matures. Nous avons montré que les reines SB/SB sur-régulent des gènes impliqués dans la reproduction, expli-quant pourquoi elle grandissent plus rapidement et peuvent fonder des colonies de façon indépendante, tandis que les reines SB/Sb (qui ne peuvent fonder une nouvelle colonie) sur-régulent des gènes de signalement chimique qui affectent l'organisation des colonies par l'effet "green beard". - Given the complexity and redundancy of the gene networks that underlie many pheno- types, the study of rare cases of a single locus having major effects on many phenotypes can give powerful insights into the evolution of complex traits. We sequenced the genome of Solenopsis invicta fire ants to study how gene expression mediates the widespread major effects of two single loci on phenotype. The first is the complementary sex-determining locus, which is known to exist in most Hymenoptera despite being characterized only for honeybees. Heterozygotes at this locus become diploid queens (or sterile workers), homozy¬gotes become aspermic diploid males, and hemizygotes become fertile haploid males. We compared gene expression between queens and both types of males in pupae and 1 and 11 days after eclosion. We found a pronounced shift in gene expression in diploid males, from being nearly identical to queens as pupae to identical to haploid males 11 days after eclosion. This means that diploid males are condemned to sterility because the overriding effects of the sex locus after eclosion cannot undo the ploidy effects on expression during the pupal stage, when spermatogenesis must be completed. The second locus with major ef¬fects that we studied was the so-called "green beard" supergene, which consists of 616 genes encompassing 55% of one chromosome (13 Mb), without recombination between the two variants "Social B" and "Social b" (SB and Sb) supergene. Through the green beard effect, i.e. workers with the Sb supergene discriminating in favor of queens who perceptibly share this supergene, the founding queen's genotype at the supergene determines colony organi¬zation: either headed by a single SB/SB queen or many SB/Sb queens. We show that the Sb chromosome evolved like a Y-chromosome, probably accumulating alleles beneficial in multi-queen colonies but disadvantageous in single-queen colonies (cf. sexually antagonistic genes), as well as transposons and repetitive sequences. We also show that the polymor¬phism of the supergene causes widespread expression differences in workers and especially queens but not in males. To understand how the polymorphism at the supergene in queen can transform colony organization, we compared the expression between SB/SB and SB/Sb virgin queens (1 and 11 days) and mother queens. We show that SB/SB queens up-regulate genes involved in reproduction, explaining why they mature faster and can found colonies independently, while SB/Sb queens (which cannot found colonies) up-regulate chemical signaling genes that can transform colonies through the green beard effect.

In the present paper we discuss and compare two different energy decomposition schemes: Mayer's Hartree-Fock energy decomposition into diatomic and monoatomic contributions [Chem. Phys. Lett. 382, 265 (2003)], and the Ziegler-Rauk dissociation energy decomposition [Inorg. Chem. 18, 1558 (1979)]. The Ziegler-Rauk scheme is based on a separation of a molecule into fragments, while Mayer's scheme can be used in the cases where a fragmentation of the system in clearly separable parts is not possible. In the Mayer scheme, the density of a free atom is deformed to give the one-atom Mulliken density that subsequently interacts to give rise to the diatomic interaction energy. We give a detailed analysis of the diatomic energy contributions in the Mayer scheme and a close look onto the one-atom Mulliken densities. The Mulliken density ρA has a single large maximum around the nuclear position of the atom A, but exhibits slightly negative values in the vicinity of neighboring atoms. The main connecting point between both analysis schemes is the electrostatic energy. Both decomposition schemes utilize the same electrostatic energy expression, but differ in how fragment densities are defined. In the Mayer scheme, the electrostatic component originates from the interaction of the Mulliken densities, while in the Ziegler-Rauk scheme, the undisturbed fragment densities interact. The values of the electrostatic energy resulting from the two schemes differ significantly but typically have the same order of magnitude. Both methods are useful and complementary since Mayer's decomposition focuses on the energy of the finally formed molecule, whereas the Ziegler-Rauk scheme describes the bond formation starting from undeformed fragment densities

Since the mid 90's, international actors as well as governmental actors have raised their interest into the development of irrigation's potential that is still largely unexploited in Niger. It seems all the more interesting as it could answer the needs of a fast growing population (3.3% per year). However, if everyone agrees on the need to development this system, the current implementation triggers questions on the process itself and its side effects. National and international policies on this matter were build upon an historical process through colonial, post-colonial and then the late 1980's neoliberal structures, leading to a business model that reveals a discrepancy between the state logic and the farming one. Après la votation fédérale demandant de prendre en compte les médecines complémentaires, un consensus a été recherché dans quatorze services et unités du Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois (CHUV). Confrontés aux données de la littérature (Plus de 2000 publications en "Evidence-based complementary medicine" depuis 1998), les soignants étaient tous surpris par l'ampleur des résultats cliniques disponibles actuellement. Tous identifiaient un besoin en formation et en informations sur le sujet. Une prise de position officielle de l'institution était aussi souhaitée, instituant l'enseignement et la recherche sur les médecines complémentaires et assurant la production d'informations rigoureuses et pertinentes pour la clinique. [Abstract] While a popular vote supported a new article on complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) in the Swiss Constitution, this assessment in 14 wards of the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland, attempted at answering the question: How can CAM use be better taken into account and patients informed with more rigor and respect for their choices? Confronted with a review of the literature (> 2000 publications in "Evidence-based cornplementary medicine" since 1998), respondents declared their ignorance of the clinical data presently available on CAM. All were in favour of more teaching and information on the subject, plus an official statement from the Hospital direction, ensuring production and diffusion of rigorous and cJinically significant information on CAM.

Objective To identify the understanding of the healthcare professionals in relation to the role of complementary therapies in primary health care. Method Systematic review by way of the following information sources: PubMed, CINAHL, PeriEnf, AMED, EMBASE, Web of Science, Psicoinfo and Psicodoc, using the keyword Primary Health Care alone, and associated with the following keywords: Medicinal Plants, Herbal Medicine, Homeopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Anthroposophical Medicine. Results Twenty-two studies from 1986 to 2011 were included. We identified three styles of practice: conventional medicine, complementary therapies and integrative medicine. Positioning professional practices within these three styles may facilitate discussion of concepts of health care, enhancing the health care provided as a result. Conclusion The work process in primary care presents difficulties for conducting integrative and holistic health care, but this practice has been introduced over time by professionals who integrate conventional medicine and complementary therapies, concerned with the care and well-being of patients.

The aim of our survey was to assess the effect of irrigation water of the microbiological quality on the production chain of lettuce in the Dakar area. Microbiological analysis showed that 35% of irrigation water was contaminated by Salmonella spp. between the two water-types used for irrigation (groundwater and wastewater), no significant difference (p>0.05) in their degree of contamination was found. The incidence of different types of irrigation water on the contamination rate of lettuces from the farm (Pikine and Patte d'Oie) was not different either (p>0.05). However, the contamination rate of lettuce from markets of Dalifort and Grand-Yoff that were supplied by the area of Patte d'Oie was greater than those of Sham and Zinc supplied by Pikine (p<0.05). Comparison of serotypes of Salmonella isolated from irrigation water and lettuce showed that irrigation water may affect the microbiological quality of lettuce. Manures, frequently used as organic amendment in cultivating lettuce are another potential source of contamination. These results showed that lettuce may constitute effective vectors for the transmission of pathogens to consumers. Extensive treatment of the used wastewater and/or composting of manure could considerably reduce these risks.

The number of private gardens has increased in recent years, creating a more pleasant urban model, but not without having an environmental impact, including increased energy consumption, which is the focus of this study. The estimation of costs and energy consumption for the generic typology of private urban gardens is based on two simplifying assumptions: square geometry with surface areas from 25 to 500 m2 and hydraulic design with a single pipe. In total, eight sprinkler models have been considered, along with their possible working pressures, and 31 pumping units grouped into 5 series that adequately cover the range of required flow rates and pressures, resultin in 495 hydraulic designs repeated for two climatically different locations in the Spanish Mediterranean area (Girona and Elche). Mean total irrigation costs for the locality with lower water needs (Girona) and greater needs (Elche) were € 2,974 ha-¹ yr-¹ and € 3,383 ha-¹ yr-¹, respectively. Energy costs accounted for 11.4% of the total cost for the first location, and 23.0% for the second. While a suitable choice of the hydraulic elements of the setup is essential, as it may provide average energy savings of 77%, due to the low energy cost in relation to the cost of installation, the potential energy savings do not constitute a significant incentive for the irrigation system design. The low efficiency of the pumping units used in this type of garden is the biggest obstacle and constraint to achieving a high quality energy solution

Irrigation with treated domestic sewage wastewater (TSE) is an agricultural practice to reduce water requirements of agroecossystems and the nutrient load impact on freshwaters, but adverse effects on soil chemical (salinization, sodification, etc.) and soil physical properties (alteration in soil porosity and hydraulic conductivity, etc.) have been reported. This study aimed to define some relationships among these changes in an Oxisol using multivariate analysis. Corn (Zea mays L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were grown for two years, irrigated with TSE. The following soil properties were determined: Ca2+; Mg2+; Na+; K+ and H + Al contents, cationic exchangeable capacity (CEC), sum of bases (SB), base saturation (V), texture (sand, silt and clay), macro-, micro-, and cryptoporosity (V MA, V MI and V CRI), water content at soil saturation (θS) and at field capacity (θFC), residual water content (θR), soil bulk density (d s), water dispersed clay (WDC) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (K SAT). Factor analysis revealed the following six principal factors: Fine Porosity (composed of Na+; K+; WDC, θR, θRFC, and V CRI); Large Porosity (θS, d s, V MA, Vs); Soil CEC (Ca2+; Mg2+; CEC, SB, V); Soil Acidity (H + Al); and Soil Texture (factors 5 and 6). A dual pore structure appears clearly to the factors 1 and 2, with an apparent relationship between fine porosity and the monovalent cations Na+ and K+. The irrigation (with potable sodic tap water or sewage wastewater) only had a significant effect on Fine Porosity and Large Porosity factors, while factors 3 and 4 (Soil CEC and Soil Acidity) were correlated with soil depth. The main conclusion was a shift in pore distribution (large to fine pores) during irrigation with TSE, which induces an increase of water storage and reduces the capacity of drainage of salts.
