Equilibrium thermodynamic analysis has been applied to the low-pressure MOCVD process using manganese acetylacetonate as the precursor. ``CVD phase stability diagrams'' have been constructed separately for the processes carried out in argon and oxygen ambient, depicting the compositions of the resulting films as functions of CVD parameters. For the process conduced in argon ambient, the analysis predicts the simultaneous deposition of MnO and elemental carbon in 1: 3 molar proportion, over a range of temperatures. The analysis predicts also that, if CVD is carried out in oxygen ambient, even a very low flow of oxygen leads to the complete absence of carbon in the film deposited oxygen, with greater oxygen flow resulting in the simultaneous deposition of two different manganese oxides under certain conditions. The results of thermodynamic modeling have been verified quantitatively for low-pressure CVD conducted in argon ambient. Indeed, the large excess of carbon in the deposit is found to constitute a MnO/C nanocomposite, the associated cauliflower-like morphology making it a promising candidate for electrode material in supercapacitors. CVD carried out in oxygen flow, under specific conditions, leads to the deposition of more than one manganese oxide, as expected from thermodynamic analysis ( and forming an oxide-oxide nanocomposite). These results together demonstrate that thermodynamic analysis of the MOCVD process can be employed to synthesize thin films in a predictive manner, thus avoiding the inefficient trial-and-error method usually associated with MOCVD process development. The prospect of developing thin films of novel compositions and characteristics in a predictive manner, through the appropriate choice of CVD precursors and process conditions, emerges from the present work.

Electrochemically deposited Cu-Ni black coatings on molybdenum substrate from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) bath solution are shown to exhibit good optical properties (alpha = 0.94, epsilon = 0.09). The deposit is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cu is present in metallic and +2 oxidation states in the as-prepared Cu-Ni black coating, whereas Ni2+ as well as Ni3+ species are observed in the same coating. Cu and Ni are observed in their metallic state after 10 and 20 min sputtering. X-ray initiated Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES) of Cu and Ni also agrees well with XPS investigations. Nanoparticles thin films have wide range of applications such as nanoelectronics, magnetic storage devices, SERS substrate fabrication, optical grating and antireflective coating. Present work describes a method to prepare large area nanoparticles thin film of the order of few square centimeters. Thin film deposition has been done successfully on a wide range of conducting as well as non conducting substrates such as carbon-coated copper grid, silicon, m-plane of alumina, glass and (100) plane of NaCl single crystal. SEM, TEM and AFM studies have been done for microstructural characterization of the thin films. A basic mechanism has been proposed towards the understanding of the deposition process.

Composite coatings containing quasicrystalline (QC) phases in Al-Cu-Fe alloys were prepared by laser cladding using a mixture of the elemental powders. Two substrates, namely pure aluminum and an Al-Si alloy were used. The clad layers were remelted at different scanning velocities to alter the growth conditions of different phases. The process parameters were optimized to produce quasicrystalline phases. The evolution of the microstructure in the coating layer was characterized by detailed microstructural investigation. The results indicate presence of quasicrystals in the aluminum substrate. However, only approximant phase could be observed in the substrate of Al-Si alloys. It is shown that there is a significant transport of Si atoms from the substrate to the clad layer during the cladding and remelting process. The hardness profiles of coatings on aluminum substrate indicate a very high hardness. The coating on Al-Si alloy, on the other hand, is ductile and soft. The fracture toughness of the hard coating on aluminum was obtained by nano-indentation technique. The K1C value was found to be 1.33 MPa m1/2 which is typical of brittle materials.

Low-pressure MOCVD, with tris(2,4 pentanedionato)aluminum(III) as the precursor, was used in the present investigation to coat alumina on to cemented carbide cutting tools. To evaluate the MOCVD process, the efficiency in cutting operations of MOCVD-coated tools was compared with that of tools coated using the industry-standard CVD process.Three multilayer cemented carbide cutting tool inserts, viz., TiN/TiC/WC, CVD-coated Al2O3 on TiN/TiC/WC, and MOCVD-coated Al2O3 on TiN/TiC/WC, were compared in the dry turning of mild steel. Turning tests were conducted for cutting speeds ranging from 14 to 47 m/min, for a depth of cut from 0.25 to 1 mm, at the constant feed rate of 0.2 mm/min. The axial, tangential, and radial forces were measured using a lathe tool dynamometer for different cutting parameters, and the machined work pieces were tested for surface roughness. The results indicate that, in most of the cases examined, the MOCVD-coated inserts produced a smoother surface finish, while requiring lower cutting forces, indicating that MOCVD produces the best-performing insert, followed by the CVD-coated one. The superior performance of MOCVD-alumina is attributed to the co-deposition of carbon with the oxide, due to the very nature of the precursor used, leading to enhanced mechanical properties for cutting applications in harsh environment.

Wear resistant coatings were produced on a permanent mould cast MRI 230D Mg alloy by (a) PEO in silicate based electrolyte, (b) PEO in phosphate based electrolyte, (c) hybrid coatings of silicate PEO followed by laser surface alloying (LSA) with Al and Al(2)O(3), and (d) hybrid coatings of phosphate PEO followed by LSA with Al and Al(2)O(3). Microstructural characterization of the coatings was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X(ray diffraction. The tribological behavior of the coatings was investigated under dry sliding condition using linearly reciprocating ball-on-flat wear test. Both the PEO coatings exhibited a friction coefficient of about 0.8 and hybrid coatings exhibited a value of about 0.5 against the AISI 52100 steel ball as the friction partner, which were slightly reduced with the increase in applied load. The PEO coatings sustained the test without failure at 2 N load but failed at 5 N load due to micro-fracture caused by high contact stresses. The hybrid coatings did not get completely worn off at 2 N load but were completely removed exposing the substrate at 5 N load. The PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the hybrid coatings and silicate PEO coatings exhibited better wear resistance than the phosphate PEO coatings. Both the PEO coatings melted/decomposed on laser irradiation and all the hybrid coatings exhibited similar microstructure and wear behavior irrespective of the nature of the primary PEO coating or laser energies. SEM examination of worn surfaces indicated abrasive wear combined with adhesive wear for all the specimens. The surface of the ball exhibited a discontinuous transfer layer after the wear test. One of the important issues in the development of hydroxyapatite (HA)-based biomaterials is the prosthetic infection, which limits wider use of monolithic HA despite superior cellular response. Recently, we reported that ZnO addition to HA can induce bactericidal property. It is therefore important to assess how ZnO addition influences the cytotoxicity property and cell adhesion/proliferation on HA-ZnO composite surfaces in vitro. In the above perspective, the objective of this study is to investigate the cell type and material composition dependent cellular proliferation and viability of pressureless sintered HA-ZnO composites. The combination of cell viability data as well as morphological observations of cultured human osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells and mouse fibroblast L929 cells suggests that HA-ZnO composites containing 10 Wt % or lower ZnO exhibit the ability to support cell adhesion and proliferation. Both SaOS2 and L929 cells exhibit extensive multidirectional network of actin cytoskeleton and cell flattening on the lower ZnO containing (=10 Wt %) HA-ZnO composites. The in vitro results illustrate how variation in ZnO content can influence significantly the cell vitality, as evaluated using MTT biochemical assay. Also, the critical statistical analysis reveals that ZnO addition needs to be carefully tailored to ensure good in vitro cytocompatibility. The underlying reasons for difference in biological properties are analyzed. It is suggested that surface wettability as well as dissolution of ZnO, both contribute to the observed differences in cellular viability and proliferation. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present article demonstrates how the stiffness, hardness as well as the cellular response of bioinert high-density polyethylene (HDPE) can be significantly improved with combined addition of both bioinert and bioactive ceramic fillers. For this purpose, different amounts of hydroxyapatite and alumina, limited to a total of 40 wt %, have been incorporated in HDPE matrix. An important step in composite fabrication was to select appropriate solvent and optimal addition of coupling agent (CA). In case of chemically coupled composites, 2% Titanium IV, 2-propanolato, tris iso-octadecanoato-O was used as a CA. All the hybrid composites, except monolithic HDPE, were fabricated under optimized compression molding condition (140 degrees C, 0.75 h, 10 MPa pressure). The compression molded composites were characterized, using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Importantly, in vitro cell culture and cell viability study (MTT) using L929 fibroblast and SaOS2 osteoblast-like cells confirmed good cytocompatibility properties of the developed hybrid composites. Electroless Ni-Cu-P-ZRO(2) composite coating was successfully obtained on low carbon steel matrix by electroless plating technique. Coatings with different compositions were obtained by varying copper as ternary metal and nano sized zirconium oxide particles so as to obtain elevated corrosion resistant Ni-P coating. Microstructure, crystal structure and composition of deposits were analyzed by SEM, EDX and XRD techniques. The corrosion behavior of the deposits was studied by anodic polarization, Tafel plots and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5% sodium chloride solution. The ZRO(2) incorporated Ni-P coating showed higher corrosion resistance than plain Ni-P. The introduction of copper metal into Ni-P-ZRO(2) enhanced the protection ability against corrosion. The influence of copper metal and nanoparticles on microhardness of coatings was evaluated. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AIN/CrN multilayer hard coatings with various bilayer thicknesses were fabricated by a reactive sputtering process. The microstructural and mechanical characterizations of multilayer coatings were investigated through transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations and the hardness measurements by nano indentation. In particular, the variation of chemical bonding states of the bilayer nitrides was elucidated by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Many broken nitrogen bonds were formed by decreasing the bilayer thickness of AIN/CrN multilayer coatings. Existence of optimum AIN/CrN multilayer coatings thickness for maximum hardness could be explained by the competition of softening by the formation of broken nitrogen bonds and strengthening induced by decreasing bilayer thickness.

In order to resolve some missing micromechanistic details regarding contact deformation in nitride multilayer coatings we report here observations from cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and focused ion beam studies of the Vickers indentations on TiN/TiAlN multilayer films of various total thicknesses as well as bilayer periods. The study of damage induced by contact deformation in a nitride multilayer coating is complemented by stress calculated using an analytical model. Kinked boundaries of sliding columns give rise to cracks which propagate at an angle to the indentation axis under a combination of compressive and shear stresses. It is seen that multilayers provide more distributed columnar sliding, thereby reducing the stress intensity factor for shear cracking, while interfacial dislocations provide a stress relief mechanism by enabling lateral movement of material. Functionally Gradient Materials (FGM) are considered as a novel concept to implement graded functionality that otherwise cannot be achieved by conventional homogeneous materials. For biomedical applications, an ideal combination of bioactivity on the material surface as well as good physical property (strength/toughness/hardness) of the bulk is required in a designed FGM structure. In this perspective, the present work aims at providing a smooth gradation of functionality (enhanced toughening of the bulk, and retained biocompatibility of the surface) in a spark plasma processed hydroxyapatite-alumina-zirconia (HAp-Al2O3-YSZ) FGM bio-composite. In the current work HAp (fracture toughness similar to 1.5 MPa.m(1/2)) and YSZ (fracture toughness similar to 62 MPa.m(1/2)) are coupled with a transition layer of Al2O3 allowing minimum gradient of mechanical properties (especially the fracture toughness similar to 3.5 MPa.m(1/2)).The in vitro cyto-compatibilty of HAp-Al2O3-YSZ FGM was evaluated using L929 fibroblast cells and Saos-2 Osteoblast cells for their adhesion and growth. From analysis of the cell viability data, it is evident that FGM supports good cell proliferation after 2, 3, 4 days culture. The measured variation in hardness, fracture toughness and cellular adhesion across the cross section confirmed the smooth transition achieved for the FGM (HAp-Al2O3-YSZ) nanocomposite, i.e. enhanced bulk toughness combined with unrestricted surface bioactivity. Therefore, such designed biomaterials can serve as potential bone implants. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In search for a new antioxidant and antimicrobial agent with improved potency, we synthesized a series of benzofuran based 1,3,5-substituted pyrazole analogues (5a-l) in five step reaction. Initially, o-alkyl derivative of salicyaldehyde readily furnish corresponding 2-acetyl benzofuran 2 in good yield, on treatment with 1,8-diaza bicyclo5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) in the presence of molecular sieves. Further, aldol condensation with vanillin, Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction with hydrazine hydrate followed by coupling of substituted anilines afforded target compounds. The structures of newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, mass, elemental analysis and further screened for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Among the tested compounds 5d and 5f exhibited good antioxidant property with 50% inhibitory concentration higher than that of reference while compounds 5h and 5l exhibited good antimicrobial activity at concentration 1.0 and 0.5 mg/mL compared with standard, streptomycin and fluconazole respectively.
