Oceanographic results during VERTEX particle interceptor trap experiment 17 August to 8 September 1980

This report presents oceanographic data supporting the detailed chemical studies in the VERTEX Particle Interceptor Trap (PIT) experiment off the central California coast. Prior to the deployment of the PITs, an oceanographic survey of the intended study area was made on R/V CAYUSE from 17 to 21 August 1980. During this cruise, twenty CTD stations (Fig. 1) were occupied in a grid centered about the PIT site selected earlier based on archival oceanographic data. During the second leg of the VERTEX experiment from 25 August to 3 September, CTO profiles were taken as time permitted. In addition, a short survey near the PITs was made on 2 September. The intent of the pre-deployment cruise was to obtain data characterizing the vertical and horizontal variability of physical and chemical properties and to map the geostrophic flow field. Toward this end, vertical profiles of salinity, temperature and dissolved oxygen were made using a Plessey 9040 CTOa profiler. Fishery Publication Index, 1980-85 and Technical Memorandum Index, 1972-85

The following series of fishery publications produced in calendar years 1980-85 by the Scientific Publications OffIce of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), are listed numerically and indexed by author and subject: Circular, Fishery BuUetin, Marine Fisheries Review, Special Scientific Report-Fisheries, and Technical Report NMFS. Also included is an alphanumeric listing of the NOAA Technical Memorandum NMFS series published in calendar years 1972-85 by NMFS regional offices and fisheries centers. Widow rockfish: Proceedings of a workshop, Tiburon, California, December 11-12, 1980

This workshop was organized because of the increase between 1978 and 1980 in coastwide landings of widow rockfish, from less than 1,000 mt to more than 20,000 mt, and because of scientists' concern with the lack of knowledge both of the fishery and biology of the species. Most scientists active in research on Pacific groundfish, as well as some members of the fishing industry and fishery managers, attended the workshop. These proceedings contain the report of the workshop discussion panel, status reports on California, Oregon, and Washington fisheries through 1980, and a collection of seven papers presented at the workshop. The status reports provide an historical perspective of the development of an important fishery. The papers present a fairly complete survey of biological knowledge of widow rockfish, economic status of the fishery, and fishery-independent methods for estimation of abundance. The papers also contain some information developed after the workshop. Since the workshop, the fishery has matured. Largest landings were made in 1981, when more than 28,000 mt were landed. Maximum sustainable yield (MSY) is estimated to be slightly less than 10,000 mt, and the stock appeared to be at about the MSY level in 1985. The Pacific Fishery Management Council and National Marine Fisheries Service have implemented regulations that have maintained landings since 1983 at approximately the maximum sustainable yield level. Fishery-dependent stock assessments are being made on an annual basis for the Pacific Fishery Management Council. While these assessments are considered to be the best possible with available data, scientists responsible for the assessment have chosen to delay their publication in the formal scientific literature until more data are obtained. However, the stock assessment reports are available from the Pacific Fishery Management Council. In addition to the papers in this collection, three papers have been published on widow rockfish since 1980. BoehIert, Barss, and Lamberson (1982) estimate fecundity of the species off Oregon; Gunderson (1984) describes the fishery and management actions; and Laroche and Richardson (1981) describe the morphology and distribution of juvenile widow rockfish off Oregon. During the past decade, the fishery for widow rockfish has developed from a minor fishery to one of the more important on the Pacific Coast. Our knowledge of the biology and dynamics of the species has progressed from minimal to relatively extensive for a groundfish species. It is our intention in preparing this collection of papers to make this knowledge readily available to the scientific community. (PDF file contains 63 pages.)

Estimation of the number of purse-seiner sets on tuna associated with dolphins in the Eastern Pacific Ocean during 1959-1980

ENGLISH: Annual estimates of the number of purse-seine sets made on tunas associated with dolphins are needed to estimate the total number of dolphins killed incidentally by the eastern Pacific tuna fishery. The most complete source of data, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission's logbook data base, was used in this study. In the logbook data base, most sets are identified as being either associated with dolphins or not associated with dolphins. Some sets are not identified in this respect. However, the number of these unidentified sets which were associated with dolphins have been estimated by stratifying the logbook data according to whether or not any tuna were caught, whether or not the nearest identified set was associated with dolphins, and the distance to the nearest identified set. Most of the unidentified sets fell in strata characterized by a proportion of sets on tuna associated with dolphins that was lower than the overall unstratified proportion. Landings data were used to estimate the number of sets on tunas associated with dolphins from fishing trips not included in the logbook data base. SPANISH: Se necesitan las estimaciones anuales de la cantidad de lances realizados sobre atunes asociados con delfines para calcular todo el número de delfines muertos accidentalmente en la pesca atunera del Pacífico oriental. Se empleó en este estudio la fuente más completa-los datos de la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical, proveniente de los cuadernos de bitácora. En éstos, la mayoría de los lances han sido identificados ya sea como asociados o no asociados con delfines. Algunos de los lances no han sido identificados a este respecto. Sin embargo, se ha estimado el número de estos lances asociados con delfines que no se habían identificado, al estratificar los datos de bitácora de acuerdo a si se había o no capturado atún, a si el lance identificado más próximo era o no un lance asociado con delfines y al averiguar la distancia del lance identificado más cercano. La mayoría de los lances sin identificar se colocan en los estratos caracterizados por una proporción de lances sobre atunes asociados con delfines, inferior a la proporción general sin estratificar. Se usaron los datos de los desembarques para calcular la cantidad de lances sobre atunes asociados con delfines en viajes pesqueros que no fueron incluídos en la base de los datos de bitácora. Nigerian fisheries development, challenges and opportunities of the 1980's

With the momentum generated in Nigeria under the Green Revolution Programme to make the country self-sufficient in food, the fishing industry is poised for very rapid development. It is however, realized that there is no quick magic formula for this development, which has to be preceded by careful planning, evaluation of resources, development of necessary management and technical personnel, introduction of appropriate technology and identification of priorities and the needs of the industry. This paper attempts to focus attention on the possibilities and priorities for the development of fisheries in Nigeria during this decade and spells out the role of the agencies in the country connected with fisheries to bring about this development

A review of the Japanese longline fishery for tunas and billfishes in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, 1971-1980

ENGLISH: This report reviews the Japanese longline fishery for tunas and billfishes in the eastern Pacific Ocean during 1971-1980, extending the studies made by other investigators, which covered the 1956-1970 period. The spatial and temporal distributions of fishing effort, catch, apparent abundance, sexual maturity, and size composition are examined for each species. The deep longlining method is described and the hook rates for this gear and for conventional longline gear are compared. Some observations on the interaction of surface and longline gear are reported. SPANISH: Se examina en este informe la pesca palangrera japonesa de atunes y peces espada en el Océano Pacífico oriental durante 1971-1980, ampliando los estudios hechos por otros investigadores que incluían el período de 1956-1970. Para cada especie se examinan las distribuciones temporales y espaciales del esfuerzo de pesca, captura, abundancia aparente, madurez sexual y composición de talla. Se describe el método de los palangres profundos y se comparan los índices de captura por anzuelo de este arte y del arte convencional palangrero. Informalidade na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro a partir de 1980

Este estudo busca contribuir à discussão teórica sobre o comportamento do mercado de trabalho e da informalidade na Região Metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro - RMRJ, sobretudo a partir dos anos 1990. As informações utilizadas na análise são provenientes principalmente da Relação Anual de Informações Sociais (RAIS) e do Cadastro Geral do Emprego e Desemprego (CAGED) - Ministério do Trabalho e Emprego (MTE) - da Pesquisa de Amostragem a Domicílio (PNAD), da Pesquisa Mensal de Emprego (PME) e da Economia Informal Urbana (ECINF) - do Instituto de Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) - com um recorte nos setores tradicionais da economia. Umas das hipóteses centrais é a da existência de uma relação de causalidade entre as políticas econômicas implementadas a partir de 1990, tais como privatizações de empresas públicas, abertura comercial e financeira para o capital estrangeiro com a informalidade. Estas foram determinantes para oscilações nos níveis de emprego formal das indústrias, com o avanço substancial do setor informal, sobretudo na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro (RMRJ).A análise, feita por setores de atividade, permite comprovar que a informalidade apresenta-se cada vez mais claramente como uma característica da estrutura da economia da metrópole do Rio de Janeiro e não simplesmente como um fenômeno transitório relacionado à redução das atividades industriais.

Contribuições ao estudo da organização sindical: a trajetória do Sindicato dos Assistentes Sociais do Rio de Janeiro na década de 1980

O presente estudo objetiva identificar e analisar as condições políticas e as motivações que resultaram na finalização das atividades do Sindicato dos Assistentes Sociais do Rio de Janeiro em 1990, tendo em vista os elementos estruturais, conjunturais e políticos envolvidos na trajetória sindical em geral e particularmente àqueles presentes na trajetória dos assistentes sociais. A investigação partiu da hipótese de que sobre o processo que resultou no fechamento do sindicato incidiram determinações que não poderiam ser explicadas apenas como o esgotamento de um movimento que teve ao longo dos anos 1980 ações de destaque na organização e aproximação da categoria com as lutas dos demais movimentos sociais em curso no país e particularmente no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Os dados analisados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas, análise dos registros e documentos institucionais arquivados no Sindicato dos Assistentes Sociais do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (SASERJ), arquivos pessoais, acervo do Centro Brasileiro Cooperação Serviços Sociais (CBCISS), acervo do Conselho Regional de Serviço Social do Rio de Janeiro (CRESS), teses, dissertações, trabalhos de conclusão de curso e anais dos congressos da categoria. A reflexão sobre os dados foi referenciada por considerável bibliografia acerca da organização sindical brasileira e das transformações do Estado brasileiro no período abordado.

Nitrification in marine ecosystems [Translation from: Rapp.Naturvardsverket SNVPM No.1213, 157-166, 1980]

The nitrification in the ocean is influenced by several environmental factors and the importance of these is more or less known. There are very likely many more to be discovered in the study of the interaction of nitrification bacteria and other micro-organisms in the ocean. Some of the factors to be considered will briefly be dealt with in this paper. Then the authors give the results of an incubation experiment in the Baltic Sea and from a detailed study in Gullmarn.

Feeding of Gammarus lacustris Sars under different conditions of habitation [Translation from: [Trophic relations of freshwater invertebrates.] (ed. G. G. Vinberg) pp.94-98. Leningrad, Zool.Inst.AN SSSR, 1980]

The amphipod Gammarus lacustris, a regular representative of lacustrine communities, often plays a significant role in the transformation of matter and energy. The object of the present work was to clarify the quantitative side of the feeding of the amphipod under different conditions of habitation. Experimental works on determination of the rate of consumption of food and its dependence on body-weight were carried out in the summer periods 1975-1978 on three water-bodies of the Krasnoyarsk region, of different conditions of habitation for the amphipods.
