To evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine (CHX) on the wettability of sound and caries affected dentin by a simplified adhesive system. Material and Methods: Flat coronal dentin surfaces were produced on 60 sound molars, 30 of which were artificially decayed. The teeth were divided randomly into 3 groups (n = 10) with smear layer (SL), without SL impregnated with water and without SL impregnated with chlorhexidine. The SL removal was performed by phosphoric acid etching for 15 s. 20 uL of distilled water or 2% chlorhexidine digluconate were applied on the demineralized dentin for 60 s. Then, a drop of Single Bond 2 was deposited on each surface. Contact angles between dentin surface and adhesive was measured by means of a goniometer and data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 0.05). Results: Higher contact angles were obtained on sound versus caries affected dentin (p <0.05), regardeless of the surface treatment. For both substrates, contact angles statistically higher were obtained for dentin covered with SL (P <0.05). The SL removal resulted in significant reduction of the angles (P <0.05) and no difference was found among angles produced on demineralized dentin impregnated with water or chlorhexidine (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Caries affected dentin wettability was higher than sound dentin and that characteristic was not influenced by chlorhexidine application.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of the mouthwashes 0.12% chlorhexidine, Listerine, and 0.5% and 2% Melaleuca Alternifolia oil against the salivary levels of Streptococcus mutans and total microorganisms. Methods: This study was double-blind controlled and paired clinical assay. Twenty-six volunteers aged 21 to 35 years old were enrolled. At baseline, 1 mL of unstimulated saliva was collected from each subject, 1 and 15 min after mouthrinsing with the following solutions: sterile distilled water, 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate, Listerine (©Johnson & Johnson do Brasil), 0.5% and 2% concentrations of Melaleuca Alternifolia (Sigma-Aldrich). The volunteers used all the evaluated mouthrinses with a 15-day interval between the solutions. Immediately after rinsing, saliva was collected and serial dilutions were performed, followed by plating in blood agar culture medium for growth of total microorganisms and SB-20 (Sucrose-Bacitracin agar) for growth of S. mutans, and incubation at 37 °C for 48 h in microaerophilia. After incubation, the number of colonies was counted and expressed as colony forming units (UFC/mL). Results: Chlorhexidine showed antimicrobial action by reducing total microorganisms and S. mutans, while the action of 0.5% Melaleuca Alternifolia was similar to that of distilled water. Listerine and 2% Melaleuca Alternifolia oil reduced total microbial counts by 11% and 9% respectively, and S. mutans by 20% and 11%. Conclusion: A single rinse with 0.12% chlorhexidine is effective in reducing the levels of total microorganisms and S. mutans present in saliva. Under the same testing conditions, Listerine and 0.5% and 2% Melaleuca Alternifolia oil presented lower efficacy than chlorhexidine.

Objective: The objective of this paper was to verify if the final irrigation at 17% EDTA, separately or followed by chlorhexidine digluconate at 2% interferes on the apical marginal leakage in root canal overfilling, due to the use of two root canal filling materials (Sealer 26TM or SealapexTM). Methods: Forty lower incisors extracted, with a single root canal, were biomechanically prepared, at 2.0mm beyond the radicular apex, with ProTaper SystemTM, finishing it with the F3 instrument. Irrigation was accomplished with 1.0 mL NaOCl at 2.5% at each change of equipment caliper and, in the end, with 5.0 mL normal saline solution. After achieving this procedure, the foraminal channels was standardized with a file K 25 until its DO appears in the foraminal opening. From this moment, the teeth were subdivided into two groups of 20 specimens each, because of the final irrigation method used: I – irrigation with EDTA at 17% for 3min and II – identical protocol, thus, after EDTA aspiration at17%, it was again irrigated with chlorhexidine digluconate at 2%, also kept intra-canal for 3min. Each group was again sub-divided into two sub-groups (ten teeth each), according to the cement used (Sealer 26TM or SealapexTM), and filled by using a single gutta-percha F1 (ProTaperTM, Universal Filling), in such a manner that it goes 2.0 mm beyond the radicular apex. Soon after that, the teeth were immersed in Rhodamine BTM for 72h, vacuum and after the roots have been bucolingually grooved, the leakages marked were measured with program Image ToolTM. Results and Conclusions: The leakage magnitude was similar among themselves (p > 0.05), except for group Sealapex®, thus the final use with chlorhexidine reduced apical leakage (p < 0.05).

This study evaluated the efficiency of a toothbrush holder to prevent contamination of toothbrushes used by preschool children. For that, the sample was composed by children 6 years old, enrolled in an educational and recreational center in Araraquara/SP, and divided into 3 groups: G1: same continuing routine storage toothbrushes, G2: children received only a new toothbrush holder for storage; G3: they received new toothbrushes holder for storage and solution of chlorhexidine digluconate to 0.12% to dabble in the toothbrush after use. After brushing their teeth, toothbrushes were collected for microbiological analysis. The data were analyzed using the distribution of frequencies. It was observed that, in general, higher prevalence of the microorganism in the toothbrushes was Streptococcus viridans (58.97%), followed by Estafilococcus (35.90%), the bacillus of air (28.21%) and Neisseria mucosa (5.13%). Evaluating frequency, it was noted that the contamination presented by Streptococcus is higher in G1 when compared to G2 and G3, while for Estafilococcus, the presence was more significant in G3. Thus, it was concluded that the use of new toothbrushes holder able to avoid direct contact between brushes and allow drying without smothering could be an excellent alternative to educational institutions that require the storage group.

Objective. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the silver nanoparticles solution in enterococcus faecallis cultures (ATCC 29212), compared with various solutions of sodium hypoclorithe (NaOCl). Material and methods. Five Agar Petri plates were inoculated with E. faecallis and each of them was placed a cellulose dish embedded with silver nanoparticles solution, or a solution of sodium hypochlorite evaluated (Viarzon, Cloralex, Clorox). Chlorhexidine digluconate 2% was used as positive control and sterile saline solution was used as negative control. After 24 hours of incubation at 37ºc, under aerobic conditions, the zones of inhibition of bacterial growth were measured and the results subjected to the statistical t test among the experimental groups (= 5%). Results. The Cloralex showed to be the most effective reflected in the extent of inhibition in relation to other substances (p< 0.05), except that the chlorhexidine digluconate 2% (p> 0.05). The solution of silver nanoparticles provided a greater zone of inhibition than the sodium hypochlorite solution (Clorox) and Viarzon (p< 0.05). Clorox and Viarzon didn't provide zones of inhibition and were similar to each other (p> 0.05). Conclusions. The solution of silver nanoparticles presents antimicrobial activity in cultured E. faecallis, even higher than other commercial forms of sodium hypochlorite. Further studies should be carried out to determine its viability as irrigating solution in endodontics (AU)

To evaluate the bond strength between two types of acrylic resin teeth and a microwave denture base resin after immersion in disinfectant solutions for 180 days. Eighty specimens made of acrylic resin teeth (Biotone and Biotone IPN) attached to a microwave polymerized denture base resin (Nature-Cryl MC) were divided into eight groups (n = 10) according to the treatment (distilled water-control, 2% chlorhexidine digluconate, 1% sodium hypochlorite and sodium perborate solution-Corega Tabs). The shear strength tests (MPa) were carried out using a universal testing machine with a 0.5 mm/min speed. Data analysis was performed using ANOVA and multiple comparison Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc test (α = 0.05). Biotone IPN showed similar results among the groups (distilled water, 8.25 ± 1.81 MPa; chlorhexidine, 7.81 ± 3.34 MPa; hypochlorite, 7.75 ± 3.72 MPa; and Corega Tabs, 7.58 ± 2.27 MPa, whereas Biotone showed significantly lower shear bond strength values for the groups immersed in Corega Tabs (5.25 ± 3.27 MPa) and chlorhexidine (6.08 ± 2.35 MPa). Soaking the dentures in 1% sodium hypochlorite could be recommended as a disinfectant solution for dentures fabricated with conventional acrylic resin denture teeth and microwave denture base resin. For dentures fabricated with IPN teeth and microwave denture base resin, all the soaking solutions evaluated in this study could be suggested to denture wearers.

The main disturbs affecting the genital segment of bulls are balanitis, phimosis and preputial injuries, abscesses or prolapses, resulting in decreased libido or mating ability. One case of traumatic phimosis with partial obliteration of preputial lumen is reported in Aberdeen Angus bull. During anamnesis, it was reported that the animal was unable to expose the penis and presented increased penile and preputial volume of unknown etiology after being submitted to a libido test. During clinical examination, a firm preputial mass of 15 cm in diameter was observed in the middle third of the prepuce and stenosis of preputial lumen was detected approximately 17 cm from the preputial orifice. Reconstructive surgery was the chosen therapy, with amputation of the affected foreskin portion. A skin segment of about 12 cm and affected mucosal portion were removed. Postoperative therapy consisted of dressing with chlorhexidine digluconate based ointment, povidone iodine and topical insect repellent (cypermethrin and carbamyl), systemic antibiotic therapy with benzathine penicillin (30,000 IU / kg, repeated after 48 hours) and anti-inflammatory therapy with flunixin meglumine (2 , 0 mg / kg SID) for three days. After twenty days, semen was collected by massage of the accessory glands. The ejaculate volume was 3 mL, with 200x106 spermatozoa / mL, white color, "suis generis" odor, 88% of motile sperm, 64% of progressively motile sperm and 82% of rapid sperm. Thus, the chosen surgical treatment was effective to correct the pathology and reintroduce the animal into reproductive activity

Introduction: The purpose of this randomized clinical study was to evaluate the presence of the periodontal pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans on metallic brackets and the effectiveness of a 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash in inhibiting this microorganism. Methods: The study involved 35 patients of both sexes having orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances between the ages of 14 and 22 years, randomized into 2 groups: experimental (n = 17) and control (n = 18). Two new metallic brackets were placed on the patients' premolars, and the subjects rinsed with a solution of 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate or a placebo solution twice a week for 30 days. After that, the brackets were removed and underwent microbiologic analysis with the checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization technique. Data were analyzed by using the Student t, Fisher exact, and Mann-Whitney tests at the significance level of 5%. Results: The results showed that A actinomycetemcomitans was present in all brackets from the subjects in the control group vs 83% of the subjects who rinsed with chlorhexidine digluconate (P<0.0001). There were also significantly lower levels of this species in the chlorhexidine digluconate group compared with the control group (P = 0.0003). Conclusions: We concluded that 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate rinsing, twice a week for 30 days during orthodontic treatment, is effective in reducing the presence and levels of A actinomycetemcomitans on metallic brackets. Objective: Evaluation of the antimicrobial effect of skin disinfection techniques is essential to avoid the transmission of infectious agents during blood transfusion. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of two methods of arm skin disinfection used in blood donors at a Hemotherapy Center in Brazil that represents an important centre for distributing haemocomponents to many cities in the country. Methods: Two skin disinfection techniques in 50 blood donors were evaluated. For the first arm, 10% povidone-iodine/two-stage technique was used. On the opposite arm, 0.5% chlorhexidine digluconate alcohol solution/one-stage technique was used. The swabs were seeded on three culture media: blood agar, mannitol salt agar and Mac Conkey agar. Automated bacterial classification based on biochemical tests/specific substrates was performed. Donor characteristics were collected using the computerised system of the Hemotherapy Center. Results: We found that microbial reduction was significantly higher for 10% povidone-iodine technique (98.57-98.87%) when compared with 0.5% chlorhexidine technique (94.38-95.06%). The species Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Staphylococcus hominis showed resistance to both disinfection techniques. We did not find statistically significant relationships between donor characteristics and microbial reduction. Conclusions: Arm skin disinfection with 10% povidone-iodine produced better antimicrobial activity. We must acknowledge that 10% povidone-iodine technique has the limitation of being a two-stage method. However, prevention of adverse events due to bacterial contamination and transfusion reactions should be prioritised. Production of hypoallergenic and stronger antiseptics that allowed a safe one-stage disinfection technique should be encouraged in health systems, not only in Brazil but also around the world.
