The role of interleukin-10 in the differential expression of interleukin-12p70 and its beta 2 receptor on patients with active or treated paracoccidioidomycosis and healthy infected subjects

Paracoccidioidomycosis patients present an antigen-specific Th1 immunosuppression. To better understand this phenomenon, we evaluated the interleukin (IL)-12 pathway by measuring IL-12p70 production and CD3(+) T cell expression of the IL-12 receptor (IL-12R)beta1/beta2 chains, induced with the main fungus antigen (gp43) and a control antigen, from Candida albicans (CMA). We showed that gp43-induced IL-12p70 production and IL-12Rbeta2 expression were significantly decreased in acute and chronic patients as compared to healthy subjects cured from PCM or healthy infected subjects from endemic areas. Interestingly, the healthy infected Subjects had higher gp43-induced IL12p70 production and beta2 expression than the cured subjects. The addition of a neutralizing anti-IL-10 antibody to the cultures increased IL12p70 levels and beta2 expression in acute and chronic patients to levels observed in Cured subjects. Conversely, addition of the cytokine IL-10 strongly inhibited both parameters in the latter group. In conclusion, we have shown that paracoccidioidomycosis-related Th1 immunosuppression is associated with down-modulation of the IL-12 pathway, that IL-10 may participate in this process, and that patients cured from paracoccidioidomycosis may not fully recover their immune responsiveness. Electronic and structural properties of the (10(1)over-bar0) and (11(2)over-bar0) ZnO surfaces

The structural and electronic properties of ZnO (10 (1) over bar0) and (11 (2) over bar0) surfaces were investigated by means of density functional theory applied to periodic calculations at B3LYP level. The stability and relaxation effects for both surfaces were analyzed. The electronic and energy band properties were discussed on the basis of band structure as well as density of states. There is a significant relaxation in the (10 (1) over bar0) as compared to the (11 (2) over bar0) terminated surfaces. The calculated direct gap is 3.09, 2.85, and 3.09 eV for bulk, (10 (1) over bar0), and (11 (2) over bar0) surfaces, respectively. The band structures for both surfaces are very similar.

Differences in the number of sensilla coeloconica and sensilla ampullacea of segment 10 of the antennae of Africanized and Caucasian bees and of their F1 hybrids

The numbers of sensilla coeloconica and sensilla ampullacea of segment 10 of the antennae of Caucasian and Africanized worker bees and of their hybrids were counted with the aid of a scanning electron microscope. Africanized bees have fewer sensilla than Caucasian bees and the continuous distribution obtained from the F1 values suggests polygenic inheritance for the control of this trait. There are also indications that the hybrid Brazilian Apis mellifera studied here are close to typical African bees (Apis mellifera scutellata) in terms of number of sensilla.

Effects of SO(10) D terms on SUSY signals at the Fermilab Tevatron

We study signals for the production of superparticles at the Fermilab Tevatron in supergravity scenarios based on the grand unified group SO(10). The breaking of this group introduces extra contributions to the masses of all scalars, described by a single new parameter. We find that varying this parameter can considerably change the size of various expected signals studied in the literature, with different numbers of jets and/or charged leptons in the final state. The ratios of these signals can thus serve as a diagnostic to detect or constrain deviations from the much-studied scenario where all scalar masses are universal at the GUT scale. Moreover, under favorable circumstances some of these signals, and/or new signals involving hard b jets, should be observable at the next run of the Fermilab Tevatron collider even if the average scalar mass lies well above the gluino mass. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Histological investigation of a 10% metronidazole and 2% lidocaine dressing on wound healing in rats.

AIM: Alveolitis is considered a disturbance of the alveolar healing process that is characterized by blood clot disintegration, alveolar wall infection and extreme pain. Several substances have been investigated to improve healing and guarantee postoperative comfort to patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate, microscopically, in rats, the healing process in non-infected tooth sockets, after application of a 10% metronidazole and 2% lidocaine dressing, using lanolin as vehicle and mint as flavoring. METHODS: Forty-five rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus, Wistar) had their right incisor extracted and were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=15): Group I (control): the sockets were filled with blood clot; Group II: application of adrenaline solution at 1:1 000 with an absorbent paper point during 1 min plus filling of the socket with a 10% metronidazole and 2% lidocaine dressing, with lanolin as vehicle, and mint as flavoring; Group III: filling of the socket with the 10% metronidazole and 2% lidocaine dressing, with lanolin as vehicle and mint as flavoring. After 6, 15 and 28 days postoperatively, 5 animals per group were euthanized with an injectable anesthetic overdose. Histological and statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: The results showed that the 10% metronidazole and 2% lidocaine dressing with lanolin as vehicle and mint as flavoring yielded similar response as that of the normal repair group and may be used to prevent the onset of alveolitis in those cases in which any predisposing factor is present. CONCLUSIONS: The use of this dressing has shown a good postoperative patient's comfort and does not cause a significant delay in the alveolar healing process.
