The database reported here is derived using the Combinatorial Extension (CE) algorithm which compares pairs of protein polypeptide chains and provides a list of structurally similar proteins along with their structure alignments. Using CE, structurestructure alignments can provide insights into biological function. When a protein of known function is shown to be structurally similar to a protein of unknown function, a relationship might be inferred; a relationship not necessarily detectable from sequence comparison alone. Establishing structurestructure relationships in this way is of great importance as we enter an era of structural genomics where there is a likelihood of an increasing number of structures with unknown functions being determined. Thus the CE database is an example of a useful tool in the annotation of protein structures of unknown function. Comparisons can be performed on the complete PDB or on a structurally representative subset of proteins. The source protein(s) can be from the PDB (updated monthly) or uploaded by the user. CE provides sequence alignments resulting from structural alignments and Cartesian coordinates for the aligned structures, which may be analyzed using the supplied Compare3D Java applet, or downloaded for further local analysis. Searches can be run from the CE web site, http://cl.sdsc.edu/ce.html, or the database and software downloaded from the site for local use.

<p>In this work, Pr<sub>0.6</sub>Sr<sub>0.4</sub>FeO<sub>3- </sub>-Ce<sub>0.9</sub>Pr<sub>0.1</sub>O<sub>2- </sub> (PSFO-CPO) nanofibers were synthesized by a one-step electrospin technique for use in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (IT-SOFC) applications. PSFO-CPO nanofibers were produced with a diameter of about 100nm and lengths exceeding tens of microns. The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) matches with standard GDC electrolytes and the resulting conductivity also satisfies the needs of IT-SOFCs cathodes. EIS analysis of the nanofiber structured electrode gives a polarization resistance of 0.072cm<sup>2</sup> at 800C, smaller than that from the powdered cathode with the same composition. The excellent electrochemical performance can be attributed to the well-constructed microstructure of the nanofiber structured cathode, which promotes surface oxygen diffusion and charge transfer processes. All the results imply that the one-step electrospin method is a facile and practical way of improving the cathode properties and that PSFO-CPO is a promising cathode material for IT-SOFCs.</p>

A capillary zone electrophoresis (CE) method was developed for the determination of the biocide 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilo-propionamide (DBNPA) in water used in cooling systems. The biocide is indirectly determined by CE measurement of the concentration of bromide ions produced by the reaction between the DBNPA and bisulfite. The relationship between the bromide peak areas and the DBNPA concentrations showed a good linearity and a coefficient of determination (R(2)) of 0.9997 in the evaluated concentration range of 0-75 mol L(-1). The detection and quantification limits for DBNPA were 0.23 and 0.75 mol L(-1), respectively. The proposed CE method was successfully applied for the analysis of samples of tap water and cooling water spiked with DBNPA. The intra-day and inter-day (intermediary) precisions were lower than 2.8 and 6.2%, respectively. The DBNPA concentrations measured by the CE method were compared to the values obtained by a spectrophotometric method and were found to agree well.

O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a necessidade energtica estimada, o valor energtico e a adequao de macronutrientes da alimentao dos idosos de Fortaleza. Este estudo epidemiolgico, transversal, com coleta de dados primrios. As variveis de estudo foram: necessidade energtica estimada, valor energtico da alimentao e adequao dos macronutrientes da alimentao. O inqurito alimentar utilizado para obteno do valor energtico da alimentao (VEA) foi o recordatrio de 24 horas (R24). O clculo da necessidade energtica estimada (NEE) da populao foi realizado a partir das equaes propostas pelo Institute of Medicine (IOM, 2002). A adequao dos macronutrientes da alimentao foi verificada a partir dos valores propostos nos intervalos da distribuio aceitvel de macronutrientes (IOM, 2002). Foi avaliada a alimentao de 458 idosos (153 homens e 305 mulheres). A mdia etria dos idosos foi 70,9 anos (DP= 7,9 anos). O valor energtico mdio da alimentao dos homens foi superior ao das mulheres. O valor energtico mdio da alimentao dos idosos foi inferior ao valor mdio da necessidade energtica estimada, tanto dos homens como das mulheres (p=0,000). Quanto proporo de protena da alimentao, a maioria dos idosos (91,7 por cento), apresentou valores adequados. A proporo de carboidratos da alimentao, tambm se mostrou adequada na maioria das dietas (59,8 por cento). O consumo de alimentao com adequada proporo de lipdio foi verificado em 53,9 por cento dos idosos. Sendo assim, conclui-se que os idosos de Fortaleza apresentam alimentao com valor energtico insuficiente em relao necessidade energtica estimada para os mesmos

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, utilizando diferentes indicadores antropomtricos, o estado nutricional dos idosos de Fortaleza. Este estudo de base populacional, do tipo transversal, com coleta de dados primrios. As variveis antropomtricas analisadas foram: ndice de massa corporal (IMC), dobra cutnea tricipital (DCT) e circunferncia muscular do brao (CMB). O estado nutricional foi definido a partir dos diagnsticos obtidos com a anlise das variveis antropomtricas: eutrfico (idoso, no qual as trs variveis antropomtricas (IMC, DCT e CMB), simultaneamente, indicassem o estado de eutrofia, segundo os padres adotados) e no eutrfico (demais idosos). Foram selecionados 385 domiclios para comporem a amostra deste estudo, nos quais foram entrevistados 483 idosos (68% mulheres). Quanto ao IMC, 47,3% do total de idosos foram considerados eutrficos. As mulheres apresentaram maior proporo de valores de IMC excessivo (21,9%), quando comparadas aos homens (13,5%). Foi verificada associao estatisticamente significativa entre adequao de IMC e sexo. Os valores de DCT mostraram que 54,4% do total de idosos eram eutrficos. No houve associao estatisticamente significativa entre a adequao da DCT e sexo. Quanto CMB, os homens apresentaram maior prevalncia de desnutrio (66,5%), quando comparados s mulheres (40,6%). Foi verificada associao estatisticamente significativa entre adequao da CMB e sexo. Ao verificar o estado nutricional por meio das variveis antropomtricas, observou-se que 83,9% dos homens foram considerados no eutrficos, assim como maior parte das mulheres (74,2%). Foi observada associao estatisticamente significativa entre estado nutricional e sexo. Os idosos de Fortaleza apresentam estado nutricional vulnervel, visto as prevalncias de no eutrficos

The present work had as objective uses a model of lineal programming algorithm to optimize the use of the water in the District of Irrigation Baixo Acarau-CE proposing the best combination of crop types and areas established of 8,0 ha. The model aim maximize the net benefit of small farmer, incorporating the constraints in water and land availability, and constraints on the market. Considering crop types and the constraints, the study lead to the following conclusions: 1. The water availability in the District was not a limiting resources, while all available land was assigned in six of the seven cultivation plans analyzed. Furthermore, water availability was a restrictive factor as compared with land only when its availability was made to reduce to 60% of its actual value; 2. The combination of soursop and melon plants was the one that presented the largest net benefit, corresponding to R$ 5,250.00/ha/yr. The planting area for each crop made up to 50% of the area of the plot; 3. The plan that suggests the substitution of the cultivation of the soursop, since a decrease in annual net revenue of 5.87%. However, the plan that contemplates the simultaneous substitution of both soursop and melon produced the lowest liquid revenue, with reduction of 33.8%.

A CE method is described for the enantioselective analysis of propranolol (Prop) and 4-hydroxypropranolol (4-OH-Prop) in liquid Czapek medium with application in the study of the enantioselective biotransformation of Prop by endophytic fungi. The electrophoretic conditions previously optimized were as follows: an uncoated fused-silica capillary, 4%w/v carboxymethyl-beta-CD in 25 mmol/L triethylamine/phosphoric acid (H(3)PO(4)) buffer at pH 9 as running electrolyte and 17 kV of voltage. UV detection was carried out at 208 nm. Liquid-liquid extraction using diethyl ether: ethyl acetate (1:1 v/v) as extractor solvent was employed for sample preparation. The calibration curves were linear over the concentration range of 0.25-10.0 mu g/mL for each 4-OH-Prop enantiomer and 0.10-10.0 mu g/mL for each Prop enantiomer (r >= 0.995). Within-day and between-day relative standard deviations and relative errors for precision and accuracy were lower than 15% for all the enantiomers. Finally, the validated method was used to evaluate Prop biotransformation in its mammalian metabolite 4-OH-Prop by some selected endophytic fungi. The screening of five strains of endophytic fungi was performed and all of them could biotransform Prop to some extent. Specifically, Glomerella cingulata (VA1) biotransformed 47.8% of (-)-(S)-Prop to (-)-(S)-4-OH-Prop with no formation of (+)-(R)4-OH-Prop in 72 h of incubation.
