Educação continuada do catalogador na modalidade a distância: uma proposta alternativa

This paper presents a proposal for the teaching of cataloguing, emphasizing the problem-solving methodology. The proposal was designed for the distance-based continuing education of the professional cataloguer. It takes into account the challenges inherent to the development of interactive and inter-disciplinary tasks, as well as the development of directed self-education and critical consciousness of that professional, inasmuch as he becomes an active subject, manager of his/her own education.

Princípios teóricos de Cutter, Kaiser e Ranganathan como elementos de interlocução na Organização do Conhecimento

The research universe of knowledge organization requires a consistent theoretical conception that promotes an effective application of its tools. In this sense, a dialogical basis is established among the theoretical principles of Cutter’s Subject Cataloguing, Kaiser’s Systematic Indexing and Ranganathan’s Faceted Classification, as a basis for a theoretical timeline of the epistemology of knowledge organization. It is possible to conclude that those three theoretical approaches can be organized in a chronological and conceptual row, showing the growing importance of facets in knowledge organization theory.

A prática da catalogação de assunto em perspectiva sociocognitiva

Subject cataloguing consists of a mental operation directly associated with the professional performance. Thus, the subject cataloguer’s daily actions must be observed in order to understand the real context of the informational products that result of the process of subject cataloguing, taking into account that the professional performance and the work context are inseparable. In this perspective, it is necessary that research on subject cataloguing includes questions concerning the nature of the cataloguers’ shared knowledge structure. In this context, this study presents a reflection from the socio-cognitive approach on the activities developed by subject cataloguing professionals.

A catalogação de assunto: apontamentos históricos e a sistematização de regras

The Subject Cataloguing, in spite of its expres-sive historical trajectory in the information organization, has not been as discussed as the descriptive cataloguing, although they arise from the same process. Recovering the Cataloguing history, you can see that there is a dichotomy between the descriptive process and the subject one; the first one was emphasized for the developing of codes and interchange patterns. Nevertheless, the studies on subject cataloguing are essential to give bases to products for helping the searching of holdings. For this reason, based on the literature, it is discusses the subject cataloguing and the set of problems about a possible institution of rules/code that guides it.

Relações teóricas da organização do conhecimento com as abordagens de catalogação de assunto, indexação e análise documental

Considering knowledge organization and representation as a theoretical line used by Information Science to face the subject approach to information, in a dialogical relation with subject cataloguing, indexing and “analyse documentaire”, this article carries out a domain-analysis of Scire journal (1995-2010) in order to identify the scientific production in the mentionned theoretical lines as well as their relationships. Scire constitutes an environment where members of the different paradigms have found an space to relate each other.
