Rian Table and Water Table: Delicate splashes and droplets of water act like primitive lenses bringing transparency to the diffused images of celestial bodies. These two installation pieces are inspired by the beauty of the night sky and invite the viewer to consider the cosmos in relation to ones self and to contemplate the discoveries which have changed our understanding of the universe. Water Table and Rain Table are the two works being presented as part of Periscope. Through the form of the science bench or museum cabinet, luminous and projected images play against glass and water invoking the sublime sense of wonder that we have when we look to the starry night sky. Water Table In 1912 the astronomer, Vesto Slipher made the discovery that “Nebula” were moving at incredible velocities due to the expansion of space itself. This discovery revealed these “Nebula” to be vastly remote and independent galaxies. Water Table speculates on the understanding that when we look into deep space, we also look into deep time. Rain-Table is a new work produced for the festival and makes reference to the first telescopic observations of the Moon made by the mathematician, philosopher and astronomer, Galileo Galilei in 1610. The implication of Galileo’s observations gave rise to a radical new understanding of the heavens and our place in it and the final acceptance that the Earth was not the center of the Universe.

Neue medien und text: privatbrief und private E-Mail im vergleich

Die vorliegende Dissertation setzt sich mit dem Phänomen ›Text im Rahmen der Neuen Medien‹ auseinander, indem sie theoretisch und empirisch der in der einschlägigen Forschung aufgeworfenen (und kontrovers diskutierten) Frage nachgeht, ob die Sprache in den Textsorten der neuen Kommunikationsformen als neue Schriftlichkeit bzw. schriftliche Mündlichkeit zu verstehen sei. Dabei konzentriert sie sich exemplarisch auf die Analyse eigens für diesen Zweck erstellter aktueller Textkorpora der Kommunikationsformen E-Mail und Brief und untersucht sie unter den Gesichtspunkten Mündlichkeit / Schriftlichkeit bzw. Nähe / Distanz. ›Kapitel 1‹ umreißt den Forschungsstand zum Thema ›Text und Textsorte‹ sowohl in der Textlinguistik als auch in aktuellen Studien zur Sprache in den Neuen Medien. ›Kapitel 2‹ ist dem kritischen Referat verschiedener bekannter Modelle gewidmet, die sich mit dem Aspekt der Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit bzw. Nähe und Distanz beschäftigen (Hugo Stegers Freiburger Gruppe, Ludwig Söll, Koch/Oesterreicher und Ágel/Hennig) und eine Verortung von Textsorten im Kontinuum Nähe und Distanz vornehmen (Koch/Oesterreicher und Ágel/Hennig).›Kapitel 3‹ schlägt Korrekturen und Ergänzungen betreffend Punktgebung, Modellglossar und Makroanalyse im Modell von Ágel/Hennig vor, das in dieser Arbeit den Analysen der Nähesprachlichkeit in Privatbriefen und privaten E-Mails zugrunde liegt. ›Kapitel 4‹ setzt sich mit Aspekten der beiden Textkorpora auseinander, auf die sich diese Arbeit stützt, und beschreibt und erläutert den Fragebogen, der im Rahmen dieser Arbeit erstellt und Probanden zur Beantwortung vorgelegt wurde. ›Kapitel 5‹ nimmt einen ausführlichen Vergleich der Textsorten ›Privatbrief und private E-Mail‹ vor und beleuchtet abrissartig die Geschichte beider Kommunikationsformen, wobei es sich gleichzeitig auch kritisch mit den in der Forschung in solchen Vergleichsfragen vertretenen Positionen auseinander setzt. ›Kapitel 6‹ interpretiert die Ergebnisse der in der Arbeit durchgeführten Näheanalysen und zieht daraus die Schlussfolgerungen.

This work refers to a cut of my artistic creation path with some reflections on the subject other. Mail Art has been an alternative trend of art / avant-garde, where communication between artists networks is the goal to be achieved, therefore, from this statement, was approached some historical and particular aspects regarding the post and its contingencies in the art / forefront. Share this moment of academic completion with a postcard exhibition that will take place through the agency of other participating artists. To do so, were invited artists from the theme IDENTIFY UP to send work in postcard size with the exclusive use of the Post Office. The exhibition event will take place in the Gallery of the Art Institute. Participant of other similar projects, I believe I experienced a new role: who calls, organizes and rules.

E-mail-“inspired” changes in non-native legal discourse

At IDC, students use electronic resources for research and online interactive communication with instructors, usually in English. This paper discusses preliminary research into the overlap between the informality of e-mail communication between students and instructors and the growing use (or misuse) of e-mail-type informal discourse in formal written legal assignments. Four students were given a hypothetical legal case and requested to write: (a) a formal letter that would be sent by e-mail to one of the parties in the case, and (b) an executive memo e-mail to the senior partner in one of the law firms representing the parties. No instruction was given as to constructing a formal legal letter or an executive memo. In the resulting e-mail communications, many examples of typical informal e-mail shorthand were used. The students were interviewed and were able to locate and change most of the errors in their letters. Several students expressed the belief that this type of “shorthand” is or should be acceptable when the formal message is an e-mail communication.

E-Mail-Management und seine systemtechnische Unterstützung in der Hotellerie

Für Beherbergungsbetriebe ist E-Mail ein wichtiges Kommunikationsmedium im elektronischen Kanal geworden. Die Bedeutung von E-Mails für die Kundenkommunikation zieht die Forderung nach einem systematischen und professionellen E-Mail-Management nach sich. Derzeit tut sich die Mehrzahl der Betriebe schwer, den damit verbundenen hohen Anspruch einzulösen. Zwar werden grundlegende Anforderungen bezüglich des Antwortverhaltens mehrheitlich erfüllt, jedoch kann die Qualität der Antworten hinsichtlich Inhalt und Form in vielen Fällen nur bedingt überzeugen. Angesichts dieser Problemlage mag es überraschen, dass die Unterstützung durch Informationssysteme in diesem Zusammenhang bis jetzt keine besondere Rolle spielt. In vielen Fällen erfolgt das E-Mail-Management mithilfe des generellen E-Mail-Programms Outlook von Microsoft. Die häufig eingesetzten branchenspezifischen Property-Management-Systeme (PMS) decken die geforderten Funktionalitäten bestenfalls teilweise ab. Spezifische Informationssysteme zur Unterstützung des E-Mail-Managements - sogenannte E-Mail-Response-Management-Systeme (ERMS) - könnten bei der Entschärfung der manifesten Probleme sehr nützlich sein. Die systemtechnische Unterstützung durch ERMS wird von Praktikern jedoch mit einiger Skepsis bedacht und nur teilweise als praktisch umsetzbar und nützlich eingeschätzt.

Quality of feedback to e-mail requests - an explorative study in alpine tourism destinations

The central aim of our project is to explore the handling of e-mail request from customers by tourist organisations and to explain the perceived behaviour. For this purpose, we designed a qualitative empirical study which consists basically of two stages. The first stage consists of a black-box test where we employ the setting of a qualitative experiment to measure the behaviour of the organisation to an e-mail request. The second stage comprises a with-box test where we want to look into the tourist organizations and analyse the relevant information processes. This study should give as some insight in the internal processing of e-mail requests and thus should help to explain the reactions that we registered.
