Users of cochlear implants (auditory aids, which stimulate the auditory nerve electrically at the inner ear) often suffer from poor speech understanding in noise. We evaluate a small (intermicrophone distance 7 mm) and computationally inexpensive adaptive noise reduction system suitable for behind-the-ear cochlear implant speech processors. The system is evaluated in simulated and real, anechoic and reverberant environments. Results from simulations show improvements of 3.4 to 9.3 dB in signal to noise ratio for rooms with realistic reverberation and more than 18 dB under anechoic conditions. Speech understanding in noise is measured in 6 adult cochlear implant users in a reverberant room, showing average improvements of 7.9–9.6 dB, when compared to a single omnidirectional microphone or 1.3–5.6 dB, when compared to a simple directional two-microphone device. Subjective evaluation in a cafeteria at lunchtime shows a preference of the cochlear implant users for the evaluated device in terms of speech understanding and sound quality.

Background. Diets high in fat and calories are promoted by the toxic food environment in which high fat, high calorie foods are readily accessible, thus contributing to high rates of overweight and obesity.^ Hypothesis. Changing the food environment to make low-fat, low-calorie foods readily identifiable and accessible while simultaneously offering incentives for choosing those foods will result in increased consumption of targeted foods, thus decreasing caloric and fat intake and ultimately decreasing obesity rates.^ Objective. To conduct an outcome evaluation study on the effectiveness of The Fresh & Healthy Program, a health promotion project designed to promote healthy eating among The Methodist Hospital employees by labeling and promoting low calorie, low fat items in the hospital cafeteria. ^ Program. By promoting healthy eating, this program seeks to address unhealthy dietary behaviors, one of the most widely known and influential behavioral causes of obesity. Food items that are included in the program meet nutritional criteria for calories and fat and are labeled with a special logo. Program participants receive incentives for purchasing Fresh & Healthy items. The program was designed and implemented by a team of registered dietitians, two health education specialists, and retail foodservice managers at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in Houston and has been in existence since April 2006.^ Methods. Childhood obesity in the US has reached epidemic proportions. Minority children are affected the most by this epidemic. Although there is no clear relationship between obesity and fruits and vegetables consumption, studies suggest that eating fruits and vegetables could be helpful in preventing childhood obesity. A few school-based interventions targeting youth have been effective at increasing fruits and vegetables intake.^ In Austin, Texas, the Sustainable Food Center delivered the Sprouting Healthy Kids (SHK) program that targeted low socio-economic status children in four intervention middle schools. The SHK program delivered six intervention components. This school-based intervention included: a cafeteria component, in-class lessons, an after-school garden program, a field trip to a local farm, food tasting, and farmers' visits to schools. This study aimed to determine the effects of the SHK intervention in middle school students' preferences, motivation, knowledge, and self-efficacy towards fruits and vegetables intake, as well as the actual fruits and vegetables intake. The study also aimed to determine the effects of exposure to different doses of the SHK intervention on participants' fruits and vegetable intake.^ The SHK was delivered during Spring 2009. A total of 214 students completed the pre-and-posttest surveys measuring self-report fruits and vegetables intake as well as intrapersonal factors. The results showed that the school cafeteria, the food tasting, the after school program, and the farmers' visits had a positive effect on the participants' motivation, knowledge, and self-efficacy towards fruits and vegetables intake. The farmers' visits and the food tasting components increased participants' fruits and vegetables intake. Exposure to two or more intervention components increased participants' fruits and vegetables intake. The statistically significant dose-response effect size was .352, which suggests that each intervention component increased participants' fruits and vegetables consumption this amount. Certain intervention components were more effective than others. Food tasting and farmers visits increased participants fruits and vegetables intake, therefore these components should be offered in an ongoing basis. This study suggests that exposure to multiple intervention components increased behaviors and attitudes towards fruits and vegetables consumption. Findings are consistent that SHK can influence behaviors of middle school students.^

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos de dois modelos experimentais de dietas hipercalóricas em comportamentos de ansiedade, processos de aprendizagem e memória e alterações metabólicas. Os animais foram divididos em seis grupos experimentais, de acordo com a condição nutricional. 1) Controle (C); 2) Dieta de Cafeteria (DC); 3) Dieta Hiperlipídica (DH); 4) Controle AIN-93 (C/AIN-93); 5) Dieta de Cafeteria AIN-93 (DC/AIN-93), e 6) Dieta Hiperlipídica AIN-93 (DH/AIN-93). Posteriormente, os grupos foram subdivididos em dois grupos independentes, conforme a tarefa à qual foram submetidos. Pesagens foram realizadas semanalmente até os 98 dias de vida; foram verificados os pesos do fígado, do coração e o peso de tecido adiposo retroperitoneal e epididimal e foram realizadas dosagens de glicose, triglicérides, TGO e TGP no soro e gordura total, colesterol total e triglicérides no fígado. Os testes utilizados: Labirinto em T Elevado (LTE), Caixa Claro/Escuro e Labirinto Aquático de Morris (LAM). Os resultados de peso corporal, os dados comportamentais do LAM, do LTE e os dados de peso dos tecidos extraídos no dia do sacrifício e as análises bioquímicas foram submetidos a uma Análise de Variância (ANOVA). Quando apropriado, foi utilizado o teste de comparações múltiplas de Newman-Keuls (p< 0,05). Os dados comportamentais do teste claro/escuro foram submetidos ao teste t-Student (p< 0,05). Animais tratados com dieta hiperlipídica apresentaram maiores medidas de peso e ganho de peso comparados aos animais controle e dieta de cafeteria, tratados com pellet e com dieta AIN-93. Animais DH1, DC1, DH1 AIN-93, DH2 AIN-93 e DH2 apresentaram maior peso no dia do sacrifício. Animais DH1, DH1 AIN-93, DH2 e DH2 AIN-93 apresentaram maior acúmulo dos tecidos adiposos retroperitoneal e epididimal. Animais DH1 AIN-93 e DC2 AIN-93 apresentaram maiores níveis de glicose. Animais C2, DH2 e DC2 apresentaram maiores níveis de triglicérides. Animais DH1 e C1 apresentaram menores valores de TGO. Animais C2 e C2 AIN-93 apresentaram maiores níveis de TGO. Animais C1, DH1, C2 e DH2 apresentaram maiores níveis de TGP. Animais DH1 AIN-93, DH1, DH2 e DH2 AIN-93 apresentaram maiores valores de gordura total no fígado. Animais DH1 AIN-93 e DH2 apresentaram maiores níveis de colesterol no fígado. Animais DH1, DC1, DH2 e DH2 AIN-93 apresentaram maiores níveis de triglicérides no fígado. Com relação ao consumo alimentar, animais DH apresentaram maior consumo calórico e maior consumo lipídico quando comparados aos animais C e DC, com ração em pellet ou dieta AIN-93. Com relação ao LTE, não foram verificadas diferenças nas esquivas e na fuga. Animais DC1, DH1 e DH1 AIN-93 apresentaram menores níveis de ansiedade verificados a partir dos dados do teste da caixa claro-escuro. Animais DC2 AIN-93 apresentaram pior desempenho em tarefa de memória. Os dados obtidos a partir deste estudo demonstraram que as dietas utilizadas foram capazes de acarretar ganho de peso, acúmulo de tecido adiposo, alterações metabólicas, diminuição da ansiedade nos animais e pior desempenho em uma tarefa de memória em um dos grupos nutricionais.

A motiváció szerepe a szervezetek életében alapvető fontossággal bír. A tanulmány egy friss reprezentatív kutatás eredményeit mutatja be, amelyet a szerzők a magyar munkavállalók körében végeztek annak érdekében, hogy feltárják a hazai motivációs viszonyokat és a munkavállalók számára legfontosabb tényezőket. A korábbi évek felmérései szerint a legfontosabb hazai motivációs tényezők a versenyképes fizetés, a cafeteria, a karrierlehetőség és az előrelépési lehetőségek voltak. A kutatás bizonyította, hogy az elmúlt időszakban átrendeződés figyelhető meg, egyre inkább előtérbe kerülnek olyan tényezők, amelyek a biztonsággal, a stabilitással, a jó munkahelyi légkörrel és a megfelelő kapcsolatokkal függnek össze. A szerzők megvizsgálták egy francia motivációs modell lehetséges magyarországi alkalmazását is, amelynek során szintén megmutatkoztak a magyar sajátosságok. A modell elemei közül bizonyos területek fontosabbak a hazai munkavállalók számára. A modell hazai adaptációja színesítheti a hazai motivációs megoldások kínálatát. ______ Motivation has an essential role in the operation of the organisations. The study represents the results of a recent representative research which was conducted by the authors among Hungarian workers. The aim was to explore the domestic motivational relations and the key motivational factors of employees. According to the surveys of previous years the main Hungarian motivating factors were competitive salary, cafeteria, career opportunities and advancement opportunities. The research has proved that rearrangement could be observed in the last period. Those factors have increasingly come to the forefronts which are related to safety, stability, appropriate work environment and appropriate employee relations. The authors have examined the possible domestic application of a French motivational model, besides the Hungarian specialties were also reflected. Some elements of the model are more important than the others for domestic workers. The adaptation of the model could make the domestic motivational solution offerings more relevant and manifold.

The loss of large-bodied herbivores and/or top predators has been associated with large-scale changes in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems around the world. Understanding the consequences of these declines has been hampered by a lack of studies in relatively pristine systems. To fill this gap, I investigated the dynamics of the relatively pristine seagrass ecosystem of Shark Bay, Australia. I began by examining the seagrass species distributions, stoichiometry, and patterns of nutrient limitation across the whole of Shark Bay. Large areas were N-limited, P-limited, or limited by factors other than nutrients. Phosphorus-limitation was centered in areas of restricted water exchange with the ocean. Nutrient content of seagrasses varied seasonally, but the strength of seasonal responses were species-specific. Using a cafeteria-style experiment, I found that fast-growing seagrass species, which had higher nutrient content experienced higher rates of herbivory than slow-growing species that are dominant in the bay but have low nutrient content. Although removal rates correlated well with nutrient content at a broad scale, within fast-growing species removal rates were not closely tied to N or P content. Using a combination of stable isotope analysis and animal borne video, I found that green turtles (Chelonia mydas)—one of the most abundant large-bodied herbivores in Shark Bay—appear to assimilate little energy from seagrasses at the population level. There was, however, evidence of individual specialization in turtle diets with some individuals foraging largely on seagrasses and others feeding primarily on macroalgae and gelatinous macroplankton. Finally, I used exclusion cages, to examine whether predation-sensitive habitat shifts by megagrazers (green turtles, dugongs) transmitted a behavior-mediated trophic cascade (BMTC) between sharks and seagrasses. In general, data were consistent with predictions of a behavior-mediated trophic cascade. Megaherbivore impacts on seagrasses were large only in the microhabitat where megaherbivores congregate to reduce predation risk. My study highlights the importance of large herbivores in structuring seagrass communities and, more generally, suggests that roving top predators likely are important in structuring communities—and possibly ecosystems—through non-consumptive pathways.

The article is designed to assist the executive in understanding the basic philosophies and concepts of providing a food service to employees, as well as the cost factors involved in giving that service.

The behavioral decisions of animals do not occur randomly, because behaviors are adjusted to ensure the survival and reproduction of the animal. In this research, I examined behavioral decisions in the foraging context of the ant Dinoponera quadriceps with regard to orientation, food avaliation and foraging dynamic to individual level. The study was conducted at the Laboratory of Behavioral Biology at UFRN and in an area of secondary Atlantic Forest in FLONA-ICMBio Nísia Floresta/RN. In all observations and experiments, ants were marked individually with an alphanumeric code label fixed on the thorax. In the first part of the study, I analyzed the orientation cues used by D. quadriceps. The tests were performed in a maze of 17 compartments. Each forager was tested for 10 min in three sessions for six different treatments. The treatments consisted of the presence or absence of odor and superior or frontal visual cues. The workers demonstrated that the presence of odor is indispensable and front visual cues are more effective than superior visual cues. In the second part, I investigated the discrimination of food, considering the parameters, size, weight and volume. In a 'cafeteria' experiment, I offered cylindrical pieces of food (mortadella) in a Petri dish, within an experimental arena 1m². Initially, the pieces were of four different sizes; in a second step, the pieces were of the same size but with different weight; in the last step, the pieces had the same weight but different volumes. The results showed the effect of the size and weight parameters for food choice. In the third part of the study, I evaluated the influence of the activity of active foragers on inactive ones. In this part, the colonies were observed in a natural environment. The observations took place on three consecutive days in 10 episodes, total of 30 days for each colony, 12 hours/day. On the first day, I registered the output and input of workers; on the second day, the most active ants on the first day were taken and given back at the end of the observations; on the third day, the observations were similar to the first day. As a result, the workers of D. quadriceps show autostimulation and they do not show social facilitation and the colony compensates the absence of the most active workers. Based on the stated, I conclude that workers of D. quadriceps use chemical, frontal and superior visual orientation cues during their displacements. They discriminate the chosen food by size and weight. The regulation of activity dynamics of foragers is by autostimulation, an active worker does not influence the activity of an inactive worker, the successful search previous is the stimulus to the successful worker itself to continue foraging activity.

El presente trabajo de grado previo a la obtención del título de Arquitecto, presenta una propuesta de diseño de un conjunto de residencias universitarias, un servicio y equipamiento que la ciudad evidencia que ya lo necesita. El anteproyecto no sólo está dirigido a la edificación de vivienda para estudiantes sino como un espacio apto para actividades académicas, espacios destina¬dos a dar un lugar para descansar y a su vez para estudiar y prepararse para la próxima vida profesional que le tocará vivir. La edificación está resuelta en base a módulos habitacionales para uno, dos, tres o cuatro usuarios, y otro destinado a un usuario con capacidades diferentes. Los espacios son multifuncionales y versátiles, ayudando así a las diversas tareas que podrían desarrollar los usuarios en las distintas carreras profesionales. Además el proyecto prevé la ubicación de espacios y servicios complementa¬rios indispensables para facilidad de los usuarios: cajeros, salas de estudio, cafetería, gimnasio, etc. Finalmente el proyecto se localizó de tal manera que quedará a distancias equitativas de las princi¬pales universidades de Cuenca.
