Teen Triple P is a multilevel system of intervention that is designed to provide parents with specific strategies to promote the positive development of their teenage children as they make the transition into high school and through puberty. The program is based on a combination of education about the developmental needs of adolescents, skills training to improve communication and problem-solving, plus specific modules to deal with common problems encountered by parents and adolescents that can escalate into major conflict and violence. It is designed to increase the engagement of parents of adolescent and pre-adolescent children by providing them with easy access to evidencebased parenting advice and support. This paper presents data collected as part of a survey of over 1400 students in first year high school at 9 Brisbane schools. The survey instrument was constructed to obtain students' reports about behaviour which is known to be associated with their health and wellbeing, and also on the extent to which their parents promoted or discouraged such behaviour at home, at school, and in their social and recreational activities in the wider community. Selected data from the survey were extracted and presented to parents at a series of parenting seminars held at the schools to promote appropriate parenting of teenagers. The objectives were to provide parents with accurate data about teenagers' behaviour, and about teenagers' reports of how they perceived their parents' behaviour. Normative data on parent and teenager behaviour will be presented from the survey as well as psychometric data relating to the reliability and validity of this new measure. Implications of this strategy for increasing parent engagement in parenting programs that aim to reduce behavioural and emotional problems in adolescents will be discussed.

This work reports on the synthesis, characterization and applications of the new cerium(III) beta-diketonate Ce(hdacac)(3)(Hhdacac)(3)center dot 2H(2)O (where hdacac and Hhdacac denote, respectively, the hexadecylpentane-2,4-dionate and hexadecylpentane-2,4-dione ligands) as catalyst for the reduction of automotive emissions. Due to its amphiphilic character, this complex can be solubilized in non-polar fuels, thus generating cerium(IV) oxide particles, which efficiently catalyze the oxidation of diesel/biodiesel soot. The synthesized complex was characterized by microanalysis (C, H), thermal analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and specific surface area measurements attested that the complex can act as a soluble precursor of homogeneous CeO(2) spherical nanoparticles. The efficiency of this compound as catalyst for the reduction of soot emission was evaluated through static studies (comprising carbon black oxidation), which confirmed that increasing concentrations of the complex result in lower carbon black oxidation temperatures and lower activation Gibbs free energies. Dynamic studies, which embraced the combustion of diesel/biodiesel blends containing different amounts of the solubilized complex in a stationary motor, allowed a comparative evaluation of the soot emission through diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. These analyses provided very emphatic evidences of the efficiency of this new cerium complex for the control of soot emission in diesel/biodiesel motors. (c) 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Inhibition of NFkB by the compound Bay 11–7082 (Bay) induces tolerogenic properties in dendritic cells (DC). While activation of NFkB can be induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thiol/disulfide redox states, the consequences of NFkB blockade on ROS/redox state is not known. To generate immature DC, monocytes were cultured in GM-CSF and IL-4 (with or without Bay) for 48 h. Genes potentially involved in redox regulation were determined using microarray technology and validated using FACS, real-time PCR or western blotting. ROS were measured using two fluorescent dyes DHR-123 and DHE (to detect H2O2 or O2 respectively). We found increased expression of genes associated with reductants such as thioredoxin reductase (TrxR1) and glutathione (GSH), although those associated with the breakdown of H2O2 such as glutathione peroxidase, peroxiredoxins and catalase were decreased. Interestingly, Bay-treated DC produced less ROS in comparison to control DC under basal conditions and following stimulation with various pro-oxidants. In conclusion, Bay-treated DC display not only tolerogenic properties but also an intracellular reducing environment and an impaired ability to produce ROS. We are currently investigating whether exogenous ROS can interfere with the tolerogenic properties of Bay-treated DC.

Aims: There remains significant concern about the long-term safety of drug-eluting stents (DES). However, bare metal stents (BMS) have been used safely for over two decades. There is therefore a pressing need to explore alternative strategies for reducing restenosis with BMS. This study was designed to examine whether IVUS-guided cutting balloon angioplasty (CBA) with BMS could convey similar restenosis rates to DES. Methods and results: In the randomised REstenosis reDUction by Cutting balloon angioplasty Evaluation (REDUCE III) study, 521 patients were divided into four groups based on device and IVUS use before BMS (IVUS-CBA-BMS: 137 patients; Angio-CBA-BMS: 123; IVUS-BA-BMS: 142; and Angio-BA-BMS: 119). At follow-up, the IVUS-CBA-BMS group had a significantly lower restenosis rate (6.6%) than the other groups (p=0.016). We performed a quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) based matched comparison between an IVUS-guided CBA-BMS strategy (REDUCE III) and a DES strategy (Rapamycin-Eluting-Stent Evaluation At Rotterdam Cardiology. Hospital, the RESEARCH study). We matched the presence of diabetes, vessel size, and lesion severity by QCA. Restenosis (>50% diameter stenosis at follow-up) and target vessel revascularisation (TVR) were examined. QCA-matched comparison resulted in 120-paired lesions. While acute gain was significantly greater in IVUS-CBA-BMS than DES (1.65 +/- 0.41 mm vs. 1.28 +/- 0.57 mm, p=0.001), late loss was significantly less with DES than with IVUS-CBA-BMS (0.03 +/- 0.42 mm vs. 0.80 +/- 0.47 mm, p=0.001). However, no difference was found in restenosis rates (IVUS-CBA-BMS: 6.6% vs. DES: 5.0%, p=0.582) and TVR (6.6% and 6.6%, respectively). Conclusions: An IVUS-guided CBA-BMS strategy yielded restenosis rates similar to those achieved by DES and provided an effective alternative to the use of DES.

Objective: The study compared the prevalence, correlates of functional impairment, and service utilization for eating disorders across Latinos, Asians, and African Americans living in the United States to non-Latino Whites. Method: Pooled data from the NIMH Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiological Studies (CPES; NIMH, 2007) were used. Results: The prevalence of anorexia nervosa (AN) and binge-eating disorder (BED) were similar across all groups examined, but bulimia nervosa (BN) was more prevalent among Latinos and African Americans than non-Latino Whites. Despite similar prevalence of BED among ethnic groups examined, lifetime prevalence of any binge eating (ABE) was greater among each of the ethnic minority groups in comparison to non-Latino Whites. Lifetime prevalence of mental health service utilization was lower among ethnic minority groups studied than for non-Latino Whites for respondents with a lifetime history of any eating disorder. Discussion: These findings suggest the need for clinician training and health policy interventions to achieve optimal and equitable care for eating disorders across all ethnic groups in the United States. Objective: Right ventricular failure during left ventricular assist device (WAD) support can result in severe hemodynamic compromise with high mortality. This study investigated the acute effects of cavopulmonary anastomosis on right ventricular loading and WAD performance in a model of severe biventricular failure. Methods: LVAD support was performed by means of centrifugal pump implantation in 14 anesthetized dogs (20-30 kg) with severe biventricular failure obtained by ventricular fibrillation induction. Animals were randomized to be submitted to classical cavopulmonary anastomosis (Glenn shunt) or to control group and were maintained under WAD support for 2 h. Left and right atrial, right ventricular and systemic pressures were monitored, white total pulmonary flow was simultaneously recorded by transonic flowmeters located on the superior vena cava and pulmonary trunk. Blood gas and venous lactate determinations were also obtained. Results: Ventricular fibrillation maintenance resulted in acute WAD performance impairment after 90 min in the control group, while animals with Glenn circuit maintained normal WAD pump flow (55 +/- 13 ml kg(-1) min(-1) vs 21 +/- 4 ml kg(-1) min(-1), p < 0.001) and better peripheral perfusion (blood lactate of 29 +/- 10 pg/ml vs 46 +/- 9 pg/ml, p < 0.001). Left and right atrial pressures did not change significantly, while right ventricular pressure was tower in animals with Glenn circuit (13 +/- 3 mmHg vs 22 +/- 8 mmHg, p = 0.005). Right ventricular unloading with Glenn shunt also resulted in superior total pulmonary flow (59 +/- 13 ml kg(-1) min(-1) vs 17 +/- 3 ml kg(-1) min(-1), p < 0.001). Conclusion: The concomitant use of cavopulmonary anastomosis during LVAD support in a model of severe biventricular failure limited right ventricular overloading and resulted in better hemodynamic performance. Described in this article is a novel device that facilitates study of the cross-sectional anatomy of the human head. In designing our device, we aimed to protect sections of the head from the destructive action of handling during anatomy laboratory while also ensuring excellent visualization of the anatomic structures. We used an electric saw to create 15-mm sections of three cadaver heads in the three traditional anatomic planes and inserted each section into a thin, perforated display box made of transparent acrylic material. The thin display boxes with head sections are kept in anatomical order in a larger transparent acrylic storage box containing formaldehyde solution, which preserves the specimens but also permits direct observation of the structures and their anatomic relationships to each other. This box-within-box design allows students to easily view sections of a head in its anatomical position as well as to examine internal structures by manipulating individual display boxes without altering the integrity of the preparations. This methodology for demonstrating cross-section anatomy allows efficient use of cadaveric material and technician time while also giving learners the best possible handling and visualization of complex anatomic structures. Our approach to teaching cross-sectional anatomy of the head can be applied to any part of human body, and the value of our device design will only increase as more complicated understandings of cross-sectional anatomy are required by advances and proliferation of imaging technology. Introduction: The aim of this study was to compare the influence of preflaring on the accuracy of 4 electronic apex locators (EALs): Root ZX, Elements Diagnostic Unit and Apex Locator, Mini Apex Locator, and Apex DSP. Methods: Forty extracted teeth were preflared by using S1 and SX ProTaper instruments. The working length was established by reducing 1 mm from the total length (TL). The ability of the EALs to detect precise (-1 mm from TL) and acceptable (-1+/-0.5 mm from TL) measurements in unflared and preflared canals was determined. Results: The precise and acceptable (P/A) readings in unflared canals for Root ZX, Elements Diagnostic Unit and Apex Locator, Mini Apex and Apex DSP were 50%/97.5%, 47.5%/95%, 50%/97.5%, and 45%/67.5%, respectively. For preflared canals, the readings were 75%/97.5%, 55%/95%, 75%/97.5%, and 60%/87.5%, respectively. For precise criteria, the preflared procedure increased the percentage of accurate electronic readings for the Root ZX and the Mini Apex Locator (P < .05). For acceptable criteria, no differences were found among Root ZX, Elements Diagnostic Unit and Apex Locator, and Mini Apex Locator (P > .05). Fisher test indicated the lower accuracy for Apex DSP (P < .05). Conclusions: The Root ZX and the Mini Apex Locator devices increased significantly the precision to determine the real working length after the preflaring procedure. All the EALs showed an acceptable determination of the working length between the ranges of+/-0.5mm except for the Apex DSP device, which had the lowest accuracy. (J Endod 2009;35:1300-1302)

Objectives. To evaluate the influence of different tertiary amines on degree of conversion (DC), shrinkage-strain, shrinkage-strain rate, Knoop microhardness, and color and transmittance stabilities of experimental resins containing BisGMA/TEGDMA (3: 1 wt), 0.25wt% camphorquinone, 1wt% amine (DMAEMA, CEMA, DMPT, DEPT or DABE). Different light-curing protocols were also evaluated. Methods. DC was evaluated with FTIR-ATR and shrinkage-strain with the bonded-disk method. Shrinkage-strain-rate data were obtained from numerical differentiation of shrinkage-strain data with respect to time. Color stability and transmittance were evaluated after different periods of artificial aging, according to ISO 7491: 2000. Results were evaluated with ANOVA, Tukey, and Dunnett`s T3 tests (alpha = 0.05). Results. Studied properties were influenced by amines. DC and shrinkage-strain were maximum at the sequence: CQ < DEPT < DMPT <= CEMA approximate to DABE < DMAEMA. Both DC and shrinkage were also influenced by the curing protocol, with positive correlations between DC and shrinkage-strain and DC and shrinkage-strain rate. Materials generally decreased in L* and increased in b*. The strong exception was the resin containing DMAEMA that did not show dark and yellow shifts. Color varied in the sequence: DMAEMA < DEPT < DMPT < CEMA < DABE. Transmittance varied in the sequence: DEPT approximate to DABE < DABE approximate to DMPT approximate to CEMA < DMPT approximate to CEMA approximate to DMAEMA, being more evident at the wavelength of 400 nm. No correlations between DC and optical properties were observed. Significance. The resin containing DMAEMA showed higher DC, shrinkage-strain, shrinkage-strain rate, and microhardness, in addition to better optical properties. (C) 2011 Academy of Dental Materials. Purpose: The objective of the present in situ study was to evaluate the influence of dental plaque on human enamel erosion. Materials and Methods: Thirteen volunteers wore acrylic palatal devices with four enamel specimens that were prepared from freshly extracted impacted human third permanent molars (4 x 4 mm), randomly selected and distributed into two vertical rows, corresponding to the following groups: GI, erosion of dental plaque-free samples, and GII, erosion of dental plaque-covered samples. For the formation of dental plaque, the specimens were placed 1 mm below the level of the appliance and covered with a plastic mesh to allow the accumulation of dental plaque. The palatal device was continuously worn by the volunteers for 14 consecutive days and then immersed in a soft drink (Coca-Cola (R), 150 ml) for 5 min, three times a day. Half of the surfaces of specimens were coated with nail varnish for profilometry tests. The study variables included the depth of enamel surface wear (profilometer, vertical ranges in pm) and the percentage of superficial microhardness change (%SMHC). Data were analysed using the t test (P < 0.05). Results: The %SMHC and depth of enamel surface wear were significantly higher for GI (-87.82% +/- 3.66 and 4.70 mu m +/- 1.65) than for GII (-13.79% +/- 4.22 and 0.14 mu m +/- 0.03). Conclusions: It was concluded that the dental plaque formed in situ was able to protect the enamel surface against erosion by a cola soft drink, thus reducing the depth of enamel surface wear and the %SMHC.
