In this paper, a novel design procedure for designing a compact UWB antipodal Vivaldi antenna is presented. The antenna operates over the UWB frequency, band from 3.1 to more than 10.6 GHz. Its measured far-field radiation is directive and its peak gain is 10.2 dBi in the specified band. The antenna pulse response shows negligible distortion, indicating that it can be useful in a precision ranging and imaging instrumentation. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Antenna design is an iterative process in which structures are analyzed and changed to comply with certain performance parameters required. The classic approach starts with analyzing a "known" structure, obtaining the value of its performance parameter and changing this structure until the "target" value is achieved. This process relies on having an initial structure, which follows some known or "intuitive" patterns already familiar to the designer. The purpose of this research was to develop a method of designing UWB antennas. What is new in this proposal is that the design process is reversed: the designer will start with the target performance parameter and obtain a structure as the result of the design process. This method provided a new way to replicate and optimize existing performance parameters. The base of the method was the use of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) adapted to the format of the chromosome that will be evaluated by the Electromagnetic (EM) solver. For the electromagnetic study we used XFDTD™ program, based in the Finite-Difference Time-Domain technique. The programming portion of the method was created under the MatLab environment, which serves as the interface for converting chromosomes, file formats and transferring of data between the XFDTD™ and GA. A high level of customization had to be written into the code to work with the specific files generated by the XFDTD™ program. Two types of cost functions were evaluated; the first one seeking broadband performance within the UWB band, and the second one searching for curve replication of a reference geometry. The performance of the method was evaluated considering the speed provided by the computer resources used. Balance between accuracy, data file size and speed of execution was achieved by defining parameters in the GA code as well as changing the internal parameters of the XFDTD™ projects. The results showed that the GA produced geometries that were analyzed by the XFDTD™ program and changed following the search criteria until reaching the target value of the cost function. Results also showed how the parameters can change the search criteria and influence the running of the code to provide a variety of geometries.

With the increase in traffic on the internet, there is a greater demand for wireless mobile and ubiquitous applications. These applications need antennas that are not only broadband, but can also work in different frequency spectrums. Even though there is a greater demand for such applications, it is still imperative to conserve power. Thus, there is a need to design multi-broadband antennas that do not use a lot of power. Reconfigurable antennas can work in different frequency spectrums as well as conserve power. The current designs of reconfigurable antennas work only in one band. There is a need to design reconfigurable antennas that work in different frequency spectrums. In this current era of high power consumption there is also a greater demand for wireless powering. This dissertation explores ideal designs of reconfigurable antennas that can improve performance and enable wireless powering. This dissertation also presents lab results of the multi-broadband reconfigurable antenna that was created. A detailed mathematical analyses, as well as extensive simulation results are also presented. With the recent progress and rapid increase in mobile terminals, the design of antennas for small mobile terminals is acquiring great importance. In view of this situation, several design concepts are already been addressed by the scientists and engineers. Compactness and efficiency are the major criteria for mobile terminal antennas. The challenging task of the microwave scientists and engineers is to device compact printed radiating systems having broadband behavior, together with good efficiency. Printed antenna technology has received popularity among antenna scientists after the introduction of microstrip antenna in 1970s. The successors in this kind such as printed monopoles and planar inverted F are also equally important. Scientists and Engineers are trying to explore this technology as a viable coast effective solution for forthcoming microwave revolution. The transmission line perspectives of antennas are very interesting. The concept behind any electromagnetic radiator is simple. Any electromagnetic system with a discontinuity is radiating electromagnetic energy. The size, shape and the orientation of the discontinuities controls the radiation characteristics of the system such as radiation pattern, gain, polarization etc. It can be either resonant or non resonant structure.

The measurement of broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA) in cancellous bone at the calcaneus was first described in 1984. The assessment of osteoporosis by BUA has recently been recognized by Universities UK, within its EurekaUK book, as being one of the “100 discoveries and developments in UK Universities that have changed the world” over the past 50 years, covering the whole academic spectrum from the arts and humanities to science and technology. Indeed, BUA technique has been clinically validated and is utilized worldwide, with at least seven commercial systems providing calcaneal BUA measurement. However, a fundamental understanding of the dependence of BUA upon the material and structural properties of cancellous bone is still lacking. This review aims to provide a science- and technology-orientated perspective on the application of BUA to the medical disease of osteoporosis.

As the paper’s subtitle suggests broadband has had a remarkably checkered trajectory in Australia. It was synonymous with the early 1990s information superhighway and seemed to presage a moment in which “content is [to be] king”. It disappeared almost entirely as a public priority in the mid to late 1990s as intrastructure and content were disconnected in services frameworks focused on information and communication technologies. And it came back in the 2000s as a critical infrastructure for innovation and the knowledge economy. But this time content was not king but rather an intermediate input at the service of innovating industries and processes. Broadband was a critical infrastructure for the digitally-based creative industries. Today the quality of the broadband infrastructure in Australia—itself an outcome of these different policy frameworks—is identified as “fraudband” holding back business, creativity and consumer uptake. In this paper I use the checkered trajectory of broadband on Australian political and policy horizons as a stepping off point to reflect on the ideas governing these changing governmental and public settings. This history enables me to explore how content and infrastructure are simultaneously connected and disconnected in our thinking. And, finally, I want to make some remarks about the way communication, particularly media communication, has been marginally positioned after being, initially so apparently central.

The rapid growth of mobile telephone use, satellite services, and now the wireless Internet and WLANs are generating tremendous changes in telecommunication and networking. As indoor wireless communications become more prevalent, modeling indoor radio wave propagation in populated environments is a topic of significant interest. Wireless MIMO communication exploits phenomena such as multipath propagation to increase data throughput and range, or reduce bit error rates, rather than attempting to eliminate effects of multipath propagation as traditional SISO communication systems seek to do. The MIMO approach can yield significant gains for both link and network capacities, with no additional transmitting power or bandwidth consumption when compared to conventional single-array diversity methods. When MIMO and OFDM systems are combined and deployed in a suitable rich scattering environment such as indoors, a significant capacity gain can be observed due to the assurance of multipath propagation. Channel variations can occur as a result of movement of personnel, industrial machinery, vehicles and other equipment moving within the indoor environment. The time-varying effects on the propagation channel in populated indoor environments depend on the different pedestrian traffic conditions and the particular type of environment considered. A systematic measurement campaign to study pedestrian movement effects in indoor MIMO-OFDM channels has not yet been fully undertaken. Measuring channel variations caused by the relative positioning of pedestrians is essential in the study of indoor MIMO-OFDM broadband wireless networks. Theoretically, due to high multipath scattering, an increase in MIMO-OFDM channel capacity is expected when pedestrians are present. However, measurements indicate that some reductions in channel capacity could be observed as the number of pedestrians approaches 10 due to a reduction in multipath conditions as more human bodies absorb the wireless signals. This dissertation presents a systematic characterization of the effects of pedestrians in indoor MIMO-OFDM channels. Measurement results, using the MIMO-OFDM channel sounder developed at the CSIRO ICT Centre, have been validated by a customized Geometric Optics-based ray tracing simulation. Based on measured and simulated MIMO-OFDM channel capacity and MIMO-OFDM capacity dynamic range, an improved deterministic model for MIMO-OFDM channels in indoor populated environments is presented. The model can be used for the design and analysis of future WLAN to be deployed in indoor environments. The results obtained show that, in both Fixed SNR and Fixed Tx for deterministic condition, the channel capacity dynamic range rose with the number of pedestrians as well as with the number of antenna combinations. In random scenarios with 10 pedestrians, an increment in channel capacity of up to 0.89 bits/sec/Hz in Fixed SNR and up to 1.52 bits/sec/Hz in Fixed Tx has been recorded compared to the one pedestrian scenario. In addition, from the results a maximum increase in average channel capacity of 49% has been measured while 4 antenna elements are used, compared with 2 antenna elements. The highest measured average capacity, 11.75 bits/sec/Hz, corresponds to the 4x4 array with 10 pedestrians moving randomly. Moreover, Additionally, the spread between the highest and lowest value of the the dynamic range is larger for Fixed Tx, predicted 5.5 bits/sec/Hz and measured 1.5 bits/sec/Hz, in comparison with Fixed SNR criteria, predicted 1.5 bits/sec/Hz and measured 0.7 bits/sec/Hz. This has been confirmed by both measurements and simulations ranging from 1 to 5, 7 and 10 pedestrians.

Small element spacing in compact arrays results in strong mutual coupling between array elements. Performance degradation associated with the strong coupling can be avoided through the introduction of a decoupling network consisting of interconnected reactive elements. We present a systematic design procedure for decoupling networks of symmetrical arrays with more than three elements and characterized by circulant scattering parameter matrices. The elements of the decoupling network are obtained through repeated decoupling of the characteristic eigenmodes of the array, which allows the calculation of element values using closed-form expressions.
