A new technique to ameliorate the effects of barotrauma was tested based on observations of pink snapper, Pagrus auratus (Forster), inadvertently piercing their everted stomach with their teeth and releasing trapped swim bladder gases. This technique was termed buccal venting and involved piercing the everted stomach protruding into the buccal cavity or out of the mouth with a 16-gauge hypodermic needle (a practice previously not encouraged). Short-term (~3 days) survival of buccal-vented fish was not significantly different from laterally vented fish nor untreated controls. Both buccal and lateral venting techniques were shown to cause no harm and allowed fish to return to depth. The short-term (1–3 days) post-release survival of line caught snapper was 88% with no significant difference in survival across three depth ranges tested (37–50, 51–100 and 101–180 m). Survival of sublegal pink snapper (<35 cm TL) was not significantly different (P > 0.05) from that of legal-sized fish (≥35 cm TL). Healing of the swim bladder was observed in 27% of pink snapper dissected after ≤3 days in captivity, and healing of stomachs was observed in 64% of pink snapper that had been buccal vented. Relatively high post-release survival rates of line caught pink snapper may offer some protection for snapper stocks where high fishing pressure and legal size restrictions result in the majority of the catch having to be released.

Mikania micrantha Kunth (mikania vine) is a highly invasive tropical weed that was first discovered in Australia in 1997, and has been the target of a nationally cost-shared weed eradication program since 2003. Field crews have been effectively treating the weed with herbicide solutions containing 1 g a.i. L−1 of fluroxypyr. During the eradication program there have been limited opportunities to test alternative foliar herbicides or rates. A newly discovered infestation provided sufficient immature vines to compare the effectiveness of eight herbicide treatments.

The financial health of beef cattle enterprises in northern Australia has declined markedly over the last decade due to an escalation in production and marketing costs and a real decline in beef prices. Historically, gains in animal productivity have offset the effect of declining terms of trade on farm incomes. This raises the question of whether future productivity improvements can remain a key path for lifting enterprise profitability sufficient to ensure that the industry remains economically viable over the longer term. The key objective of this study was to assess the production and financial implications for north Australian beef enterprises of a range of technology interventions (development scenarios), including genetic gain in cattle, nutrient supplementation, and alteration of the feed base through introduced pastures and forage crops, across a variety of natural environments. To achieve this objective a beef systems model was developed that is capable of simulating livestock production at the enterprise level, including reproduction, growth and mortality, based on energy and protein supply from natural C4 pastures that are subject to high inter-annual climate variability. Comparisons between simulation outputs and enterprise performance data in three case study regions suggested that the simulation model (the Northern Australia Beef Systems Analyser) can adequately represent the performance beef cattle enterprises in northern Australia. Testing of a range of development scenarios suggested that the application of individual technologies can substantially lift productivity and profitability, especially where the entire feedbase was altered through legume augmentation. The simultaneous implementation of multiple technologies that provide benefits to different aspects of animal productivity resulted in the greatest increases in cattle productivity and enterprise profitability, with projected weaning rates increasing by 25%, liveweight gain by 40% and net profit by 150% above current baseline levels, although gains of this magnitude might not necessarily be realised in practice. While there were slight increases in total methane output from these development scenarios, the methane emissions per kg of beef produced were reduced by 20% in scenarios with higher productivity gain. Combinations of technologies or innovative practices applied in a systematic and integrated fashion thus offer scope for providing the productivity and profitability gains necessary to maintain viable beef enterprises in northern Australia into the future.

Stakeholder engagement is important for successful management of natural resources, both to make effective decisions and to obtain support. However, in the context of coastal management, questions remain unanswered on how to effectively link decisions made at the catchment level with objectives for marine biodiversity and fisheries productivity. Moreover, there is much uncertainty on how to best elicit community input in a rigorous manner that supports management decisions. A decision support process is described that uses the adaptive management loop as its basis to elicit management objectives, priorities and management options using two case studies in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The approach described is then generalised for international interest. A hierarchical engagement model of local stakeholders, regional and senior managers is used. The result is a semi-quantitative generic elicitation framework that ultimately provides a prioritised list of management options in the context of clearly articulated management objectives that has widespread application for coastal communities worldwide. The case studies show that demand for local input and regional management is high, but local influences affect the relative success of both engagement processes and uptake by managers. Differences between case study outcomes highlight the importance of discussing objectives prior to suggesting management actions, and avoiding or minimising conflicts at the early stages of the process. Strong contributors to success are a) the provision of local information to the community group, and b) the early inclusion of senior managers and influencers in the group to ensure the intellectual and time investment is not compromised at the final stages of the process. The project has uncovered a conundrum in the significant gap between the way managers perceive their management actions and outcomes, and community's perception of the effectiveness (and wisdom) of these same management actions.

In contrast to the well-known Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) of the foot, CN of the knee is hardly recognized. In a literature search, we only found five articles on total knee arthroplasty for Charcot joints (1–5). We did not find a single article dealing with alternative treatment options or the general clinical course of this disease. We started our study

During the treatment of diabetic Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) of the foot in two young patients, we discovered atypical alterations of their hands with loss of strength and paresthesia combined with atypical and nonhealing bone alterations and instability. Whereas CN of the foot is a serious and well-known complication of diabetes, CN of the hand is only mentioned in four articles (1–4).

Growth in aviation has resulted in large airports that can be described as Airport Metropolises. This thesis reviews a variety of sustainable energy options that are suitable for such airports, and presents a decision support framework that can be used to guide decision makers towards the adoption of sound sustainable energy projects and practices. The thesis demonstrates use of the decision support framework via a number of case studies and outlines a methodology which could be incorporated within a Decision Support System.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is caused by an autoimmune inflammation of the small bile ducts. It results to destruction of bile ducts, accumulation of the bile in the liver, and cirrhosis. The prevalence and incidence of PBC is increasing in the Western world. The prevalence is highest in the USA (402 per million) and incidence in Scotland (49/million/year). Our aim was to assess the epidemiology of PBC in Finland. Patients for the epidemiological study were searched from the hospital discharge records from year 1988 to 1999.The prevalence rose from 103 to 180/million from 1988 to 1999, an annual increase of 5.1%. The incidence rose from 12 to 17 /million/year, an annual increase of 3.5%. The age at death increased markedly from 65 to 76 years. The risk of liver related deaths diminished over time. The treatment of PBC is based on Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). During 20 years 50% of patients end up with cirrhosis. Our treatment option was to combine budesonide, a potent corticosteroid with a high first pass metabolism in the liver, to UDCA and evaluate the liver effects and systemic effects such as bone mass density (BMD) changes. Our aim was to find out if combination of laboratory tests would serve as a surrogate marker for PBC and help reducing the need for liver biopsy. Non-cirrhotic PBC patients were randomized to receive budesonide 6 mg/day combined to UDCA 15 mg /kg/day or UDCA alone for three years. The combination therapy with UDCA and budesonide was effective: stage improved 22%, fibrosis 25%, and inflammation 32%. In the UDCA group the changes were: 20% deterioriation in stage and 70% in fibrosis, but a 10% improvement in inflammation. BMD in femoral neck decreased by 3.6% in the combination group and by 1.9% in the UDCA group. The reductions in lumbar spine were 2.8% and 0.7%. Pharmacokinetics did not differ between the stages of PBC. HA, PIIINP, bile acids, and AST were significantly different within stages I-III and could differentiate the mild fibrosis (F0F1) from the moderate (F2F3). The combination of these individual markers (PBC-score) further improved the accuracy. The area under the ROC of the PBC score, using a cut of value 66, had a sensitivity of 81.4% and a specificity of 65.2% to classify the stage of PBC. The prevalence of PBC in Finland increases, which results from increasing incidence and improved survival. The combination of budesonide and UDCA improves liver histology compared to UDCA alone in non-cirrhotic stages of PBC. The treatment may reduce BMD. Hyaluronic acid, PIIINP, AST, and bile acids may serve as tools to monitor the treatment response in the early stages of PBC. The budesonide and UDCA combination therapy is an option for those patients who do not receive full response from UDCA and are still at the non-cirrhotic stage of PBC.

Microbiological quality of the treated wastewater is an important parameter for its reuse. The data oil the Fecal Coliform (FC) and Fecal Streptococcus (FS) at different stages of treatment in the Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Delhi watershed is not available, therefore in the present study microbial profiling of STPs was carried out to assess the effluent quality for present and future reuse options. This Study further evaluates the water quality profiles at different stages of treatment for 16 STPs in Delhi city. These STPs are based on conventional Activated Sludge Process (ASP), extended aeration, physical, chemical and biological treatment (BIOFORE), Trickling Filter and Oxidation Pond. The primary effluent quality produced from most of the STPs was suitable for Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT). Extended Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) as a result Of low inflow to the STPS Was responsible for high turbidity, COD and BODs removal. Conventional ASP based STPs achieved 1.66 log FC and 1.06 log FS removal. STPs with extended aeration treatment process produced better quality effluent with maximum 4 log order reduction in FC and FS levels. ``Kondli'' and ``Nilothi'' STPs employing ASP, produced better quality secondary effluent as compared to other STPs based oil similar treatment process. Oxidation Pond based STPs showed better FC and FS removals, whereas good physiochemical quality was achieved during the first half of the treatment. Based upon physical, chemical and microbiological removal efficiencies, actual integrated efficiency (IEa) of each STP was determined to evaluate its Suitability for reuse for irrigation purposes. Except Mehrauli'' and ``Oxidation Pond'', effluents from all other STPs require tertiary treatment for further reuse. Possible reuse options, depending Upon the geographical location, proximity of facilities of potential users based oil the beneficial uses, and sub-soil types, etc. for the Delhi city have been investigated, which include artificial groundwater recharge, aquaculture, horticulture and industrial uses Such as floor washing, boiler feed, and cooling towers, etc. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. This case study has been carried out as a comparison between two different land-use strategies for climate change mitigation, with possible application within the Clean Development Mechanisms. The benefits of afforestation for carbon sequestration versus for bioenergy production are compared in the context of development planning to meet increasing domestic and agricultural demand for electricity in Hosahalli village, Karnataka, India. One option is to increase the local biomass based electricity generation, requiring an increased biomass plantation area. This option is compared with fossil based electricity generation where the area is instead used for producing wood for non-energy purposes while also sequestering carbon in the soil and standing biomass. The different options have been assessed using the PRO-COMAP model. The ranking of the different options varies depending on the system boundaries and time period. Results indicate that, in the short term (30 years) perspective, the mitigation potential of the long rotation plantation is largest, followed by the short rotation plantation delivering wood for energy. The bioenergy option is however preferred if a long-term view is taken. Short rotation forests delivering wood for short-lived non-energy products have the smallest mitigation potential, unless a large share of the wood products are used for energy purposes (replacing fossil fuels) after having served their initial purpose. If managed in a sustainable manner all of these strategies can contribute to the improvement of the social and environmental situation of the local community. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
