This paper outlines research on the processes taking place within the coal mineral matter at high temperatures and development of the relationship between ash fusion temperatures (AFT) and phase equilibria of the coal ash slags. A new thermodynamic database for the Al-Ca-Fe-O-Si system developed by the author was used in conjunction with the thermodynamic computer package F*A*C*T for these purposes. In addition, high temperature experimental studies were undertaken that involved heat treatment and quenching of the ash cones followed by the analyses using different techniques. The study provided new information on the processes taking place during AFT test and demonstrated the validity of the AFTs predictions with F*A*C*T. Examples of practical applications of the AFT prediction method are given in the paper. The results of this study are important not only for the AFT predictions, but also in general for the application of phase equilibrium science to the characterisation of the coal mineral matter interactions at high temperature. Experimental studies on phase equilibria and liquidus in the multicomponent system PbO-ZnO-CaO-SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3 in air have been conducted over the temperature range between 1323 K (1050 degreesC) and 1623 K (1350 degreesC) to characterize the phase relations of the complex slag systems encountered in lead and zinc blast furnace sinters. The liquidus in two pseudoternary sections ZnO-Fe2O3-(PbO + CaO + SiO2) with the CaO/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.933 and PbO/(CaO + SiO2) weight ratios of 2.0 and 3.2 have been constructed.

The efficiency of sources used for soil acidity correction depends on reactivity rate (RR) and neutralization power (NP), indicated by effective calcium carbonate (ECC). Few studies establish relative efficiency of reactivity (RER) for silicate particle-size fractions, therefore, the RER applied for lime are used. This study aimed to evaluate the reactivity of silicate materials affected by particle size throughout incubation periods in comparison to lime, and to calculate the RER for silicate particle-size fractions. Six correction sources were evaluated: three slags from distinct origins, dolomitic and calcitic lime separated into four particle-size fractions (2, 0.84, 0.30 and <0.30-mm sieves), and wollastonite, as an additional treatment. The treatments were applied to three soils with different texture classes. The dose of neutralizing material (calcium and magnesium oxides) was applied at equal quantities, and the only variation was the particle-size material. After a 90-day incubation period, the RER was calculated for each particle-size fraction, as well as the RR and ECC of each source. The neutralization of soil acidity of the same particle-size fraction for different sources showed distinct solubility and a distinct reaction between silicates and lime. The RER for slag were higher than the limits established by Brazilian legislation, indicating that the method used for limes should not be used for the slags studied here.

Studies on the use of silicate correctives in agriculture show that they have great potential to improve soil chemical characteristics, however, little information is available on the reactivity rates of their particle-size fractions. This study investigated whether the reactivity rates obtained experimentally could be considered in the calculation of ECC (effective calcium carbonate) for soil liming, promoting adequate development of alfalfa plants. Six treatments were evaluated in the experiment, consisting of two slag types applied in two rates. The experimental ECC was used to calculate one of the rates and the ECC determined in the laboratory was used to calculate the other. Rates of limestone and wollastonite were based on the ECC determined in laboratory. The rates of each soil acidity corretive were calculated to increase the base saturation to 80%. The treatments were applied to a Rhodic Hapludox and an Alfisol Ferrudalfs. The methods for ECC determination established for lime can be applied to steel slag. The application of slag corrected soil acidity with consequent accumulation of Ca, P, and Si in alfalfa, favoring DM production.

Actualmente, a sociedade depara-se com um enorme desafio: a gestão dos resíduos sólidos urbanos. A sua produção tem vindo a aumentar devido à intensificação das actividades humanas nas últimas décadas. A criação de um sistema de gestão dos resíduos é fundamental para definir prioridades nas acções e metas para que haja uma prevenção na produção de resíduos. Os resíduos sólidos urbanos quando dispostos de forma inadequada podem provocar graves impactos ambientais, tendo sido neste trabalho demonstrado que através de uma gestão eficiente destes é possível aproveitar o potencial energético do biogás e consequentemente diminuir o consumo de combustíveis fósseis reduzindo o impacto ambiental. Os aterros sanitários devem funcionar como a ultima etapa do sistema de tratamento dos resíduos sólidos urbanos e são uma alternativa a ter em conta se forem tomadas todas as medidas necessárias. Estima-se que os aterros sejam responsáveis pela produção de 6-20% do metano existente e que contribuam com 3-4% da produção anual de gases efeito de estufa provenientes de actividades antropogénicas1. É, portanto, fundamental proceder a uma impermeabilização do solo e à criação de condições para recolha do biogás produzido durante a decomposição dos resíduos. Foi estimada a produção de biogás, de acordo com o modelo “LandGEM”, no entanto comparando esta produção com a produção medida pelo explorador, constatou-se uma diferença significativa que pode ser justificada pelo: modo de funcionamento do aterro (longos períodos de paragem); desvio dos resíduos rapidamente biodegradáveis para valorização; a existência de uma percentagem superior ao normal de oxigénio no biogás; a utilização de escórias e cinzas, e a correspondente redução da humidade devido ao compactamento exercido sobre os resíduos durante a sua deposição. Visto tratar-se de um estudo de viabilidade económica da valorização do biogás, foram propostos três cenários para a valorização do biogás. O 1º cenário contempla a instalação de um sistema gerador de energia para comercialização junto da Rede Eléctrica Nacional. O 2º Cenário contempla a instalação de um sistema alternativo de alimentação à caldeira da central de valorização energética de forma a substituir o combustível utilizado actualmente. E o 3º Cenário vem de encontro com os resultados observados actualmente onde se verifica uma reduzida produção/recolha de biogás no aterro. Assim é proposto um sistema gerador de energia que garanta o auto-consumo da exploração do aterro (26 MWh/ano). Qualquer um dos cenários apresenta uma VAL negativa o que leva a concluir que não são viáveis. No entanto, através da análise de sensibilidade, verificamos que estes são claramente afectados por factores como o benefício e o investimento anual, concluindo-se que com alterações nos factores de cálculo, como por exemplo, um aumento no consumo de combustível auxiliar da caldeira (2º cenário), ou com um aumento da factura eléctrica (3º cenário), ou com o aumento do tempo de retorno do investimento inicial(1º cenário), os projectos podem-se tornar viáveis. Por fim importa referir que independentemente da valorização é fundamental continuar a eliminar a máxima quantidade de metano produzida para tentar diminuir o impacto que este tem sobre o ambiente.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a associação entre a utilização recente de serviços odontológicos, fatores socioeconômicos e condições de saúde bucal entre idosos no Brasil. MÉTODOS: A amostra foi composta pelos indivíduos de 65-74 anos (n = 6.702) que participaram da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde Bucal em 2010 (SBBrasil 2010). A variável dependente foi a utilização recente de serviços odontológicos (última consulta há dois anos ou menos). As variáveis independentes foram: fatores sociodemográficos, medidas clínicas de saúde bucal e medida subjetiva de saúde bucal. A análise estatística foi feita por meio da descrição das medidas de frequência, análise bivariada e múltipla utilizando-se regressão de Poisson. RESULTADOS: Observou-se que 46,5% dos idosos foram ao dentista há dois anos ou menos. A partir da análise múltipla observou-se que a escolaridade, a renda e a macrorregião foram independentemente associadas ao desfecho. Indivíduos com zero a 20 dentes e necessidade de prótese apresentaram menor prevalência de consulta odontológica recente. Maiores prevalências de consulta recente foram observadas entre os indivíduos com necessidade de tratamento odontológico e usuários de prótese. CONCLUSÕES: A utilização recente de serviços odontológicos foi associada a fatores socioeconômicos (escolaridade, renda e macrorregião do País) e a medidas clínicas de saúde bucal (número de dentes, uso e necessidade de prótese e necessidade de tratamento).

Transportation geotechnics associated with constructing and maintaining properly functioning transportation infrastructure is a very resource intensive activity. Large amounts of materials and natural resources are required, consuming proportionately large amounts of energy and fuel. Thus, the implementation of the principles of sustainability is important to reduce energy consumption, carbon footprint, greenhouse gas emissions, and to increase material reuse/recycling, for example. This paper focusses on some issues and activities relevant to sustainable earthwork construction aimed at minimising the use of energy and the production of CO2 while improving the in-situ ground to enable its use as a foundation without the consumption of large amounts of primary aggregate as additional foundation layers. The use of recycled materials is discussed, including steel slag and tyre bales, alongside a conceptual framework for evaluating the utility of applications for recycled materials in transportation infrastructure.

The addition of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash (FA) and slag, generally improves concrete workability, durability, and long-term strength. New trends in sustainable development of concrete infrastructure and in environmental regulations on waste disposal are spurring use of SCMs in concrete. However, use of SCM concrete is sometimes limited due to a lack of understanding about material behaviors and lack of proper specifications for its construction practice. It is believed that SCM concrete performance varies significantly with the source and proportion of the cementitious materials. SCM concrete often displays slower hydration, accompanied by slower setting and lower early-age strength, especially under cold weather conditions. The present research was conducted to have a better understanding of SCM concrete behaviors under different weather conditions. In addition to the study of the effect of SCM content on concrete set time using cementitious materials from different sources/manufacturers, further research may be needed to investigate the effects of SCM combinations on concrete flowability, air stability, cracking resistance, and durability.

Recent research evaluated the behavior of concrete made with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag under a variety of conditions. Correlations were found among the source and proportion of the SCMs, curing conditions, concrete set time, maturity, strength development, and cracking potential.

The chemistry of today’s concrete mixture designs is complicated by many variables, including multiple sources of aggregate and cements and a plethora of sometimes incompatible mineral and chemical admixtures. Concrete paving has undergone significant changes in recent years as new materials have been introduced into concrete mixtures. Supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag are now regularly used. In addition, many new admixtures that were not even available a few years ago now have widespread usage. Adding to the complexity are construction variables such as weather, mix delivery times, finishing practices, and pavement opening schedules. Mixture materials, mix design, and pavement construction are not isolated steps in the concrete paving process. Each affects and is affected by the other in ways that determine overall pavement quality and long-term performance. Equipment and procedures commonly used to test concrete materials and concrete pavements have not changed in decades, leaving serious gaps in our ability to understand and control the factors that determine concrete durability. The concrete paving community needs tests that will adequately characterize the materials, predict interactions, and monitor the properties of the concrete.

Pozzolans and slag extend the market for concrete products by improving specific properties of the products, which allows the products to be constructed with materials or placed in environments that would have precluded the use of portland cement alone. In properly formulated concrete mixes, pozzolans and slag have been shown to enhance long-term strength, decrease permeability, increase durability, reduce thermal cracking of mass concrete, minimize or eliminate cracking related to alkali-silica reaction (ASR), and minimize or eliminate cracking related to sulfate attack. The purpose of this research project was to conduct a scoping study that could be used to evaluate the need for additional research in the area of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) that are used in concrete for highway applications. Special emphasis was given to the concept of using two or more SCMs in a single concrete mixture. The scope of the study was limited to a literature survey and panel discussions concerning issues relevant to the project. No laboratory work was conducted for this project. A problem statement with research plan was created that could be used to guide a pooled fund project.

The Iowa Method for bridge deck overlays has been very successful in Iowa since its adoption in the 1970s. This method involves removal of deteriorated portions of a bridge deck followed by placement of a layer of den (Type O) Portland Cement Concrete (PCC). The challenge encountered with this type of bridge deck overlay is that the PCC must be mixed on-site, brought to the placement area and placed with specialized equipment. This adds considerably to the cost and limits contractor selection. A previous study (TR-427) showed that a dense PCC with high-range water reducers could successfully be used for bridge deck overlays using conventional equipment and methods. This current study evaluated the use of high performance PCC in place of a dense PCC for work on county bridges. High performance PCC uses fly ash and slag to replace some of the cement in the mix. This results in a workable PCC mix that cures to form a very low permeability overlay.
