A new pyrophosphate long-lasting phosphor with composition of Ca1.96P2O7:0.02Eu(2+), 0.02Y(3+) is synthesized via the high-temperature solid-state reaction method. Its properties are systematically investigated utilizing XRD, photoluminescence, phosphorescence and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra. The phosphor emits blue light that is related to the characteristic emission of Eu2+ due to 5d-4f transitions. For the optimized sample, bright blue long-lasting phosphorescence (LLP) could be observed by naked eyes even 6 h after the excitation source is removed. The TL spectra show that the doping of Y3+ ions greatly enhanced intensity of 335 K peak and created new TL peak at about 373 K that is also responsible for the blue LLP. Based on our study, Y3+ ions are suggested to act as electron traps to improve the performance of the blue phosphorescence of Eu2+ such as intensity and persistent time.

Phosphate long lasting phosphorescence (LLP) phosphors with composition of (Zn1-xTmx)(2)P2O7 were prepared by the high-temperature solid-state method. Their properties were systematically investigated utilizing XRD, photoluminescence, phosphorescence and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra. These phosphors emit blue light that is related to the characteristic emission due to the D-1(2)-H-3(6), D-1(2)-H-3(4) and (1)G(4)-H-3(6) transitions of Tm3+. After the UV light excitation source was switched off, the bright blue long lasting phosphorescence can be observed which could last for more than 1 h in the limit of light perception of dark-adapted human eyes (0.32 mcd/m(2)). Two TL peaks at 336 K and 415 K appeared in the TL spectrum. By analyzing the TL curve the depths of traps were calculated to be 0.67 eV and 0.97 eV, respectively. Also, the mechanism was discussed in this report.

By introducing the Y3+ into Sr2P2O7:Eu2+, we successfully prepared a kind of new phosphor with blue long-lasting phosphorescence by the high-temperature solid-state reaction method. In this paper, the properties of Sr2P2O7:Eu2+, Y3+ were investigated utilizing XRD, photoluminescence, luminescence decay, long-lasting phosphorescence and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra. The phosphor emitted blue light that was related to the 4f(6)5d(1)-S-8(7/2) transition of Eu2+. The bright blue phosphorescence could be observed by naked eyes even 8 h after the excitation source was removed. Two TL peaks at 317 and 378 K related to two types of defects appeared in the TL spectrum. By analyzing the TL curve the depths of traps were calculated to be 0.61 and 0.66 eV. Also, the mechanism of LLP was discussed in this report.

A highly efficient white electroluminescent polymer with simultaneous blue, green, and red emission is reported, developed using a dopant/host strategy by covalently attaching both a green- and a red-light-emitting dopant to the side chain of a blue-light-emitting polymer host (see figure). In a single-layer device a maximum luminance efficiency of 7.3 cd A(-1) with CIE coordinates of (0.31,0.32) is achieved.

Efficient blue polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) have been fabricated with a neutral alcohol-soluble polyfluorene, i.e., poly(9,9-bis(6(')-diethoxylphosphorylhexyl)fluorene) (PF-EP), as the emitting layer, high work-function Al as the cathode, and poly(vinyl carbazole) as the hole-transporting layer. The PLEDs display a maximum luminous efficiency of 4.0 cd/A and the luminous efficiency > 2.4 cd/A in a wide range of current densities. It is found that the promising performance of the devices is attributed to the fact that the PF-EP is not only an efficient blue light-emitting polymer, but it also can facilitate efficient electron injection at the Al/PF-EP interface.

Two PPV-based copolymers consisting siloxane linkage have been synthesized by melt condensation of bisphenol and dianilinodimethylsilane. The rigid PPV segments act as chromosphere and allow fine turning of band gap for blue-light emission, while the flexible siloxane units lead to the effective interruption of conjugation and the enhancement of solubility. The UV-vis absorption, photoluminescent and eletroluminescent properties have been studied.

BACKGROUND: Previously, tachyplesin gene (tac) has been successfully transferred into Undaria pinnatifida gametophytes using the method of microprojectile bombardment transformation. The objectives of this study were to compare and evaluate the performance of bubble-column and airlift bioreactors to determine a preferred configuration of bioreactor for vegetative propagation of transgenic U. pinnatifida gametophytes, and to then investigate the influence of light on vegetative propagation of these gametophytes, including incident light intensity, photoperiod and light quality to resolve the problems of rapid vegetative propagation within the selected bioreactor. RESULTS: Experimental results showed that final dry cell density in the airlift bioreactor was 12.7% higher than that in the bubble-column bioreactor under the optimal aeration rate of 1.2 L air min(-1) L-1 culture. And a maximum final dry cell density of 2830 mg L-1 was obtained within the airlift bioreactor using blue light at 40 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) with a light/dark cycle of 14/10 (h). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis indicated that genes (bar and tac) were not lost during rapid vegetative propagation within the airlift bioreactor. CONCLUSION: The airlift bioreactor was shown to be much more suitable for rapid vegetative propagation of transgenic U. pinnatifida gametophytes than the bubble-column bioreactor in the laboratory. The use of blue light allows improvement of vegetative propagation of transgenic U. pinnatifida gametophytes. (C) 2009 Society of Chemical Industry

A combined detection system of simultaneous contactless conductometric and fluorescent detection for capillary electrophoresis (CE) has been designed and evaluated. The two processes share a common detection cell. A blue light-emitting diode (LED) was used as the excitation source and an optical fiber was used to collect the emitting fluorescence for fluorescent detection (FD). Inorganic ions, fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled amino acids and small molecule peptides were separated and detected by the combined detector, and the detection limits (LODs) of sub-μ M level were achieved.

The increasing interest in coral culture for biotechnological applications, to supply the marine aquarium trade, or for reef restoration programs, has prompted researchers to optimize coral culture protocols, with emphasis to ex situ production. When cultured ex situ, the growth performance of corals can be influenced by several physical, chemical and biological parameters. For corals harbouring zooxanthellae, light is one of such key factors, as it can influence the photosynthetic performance of these endosymbionts, as well as coral physiology, survival and growth. The economic feasibility of ex situ coral aquaculture is strongly dependent on production costs, namely those associated with the energetic needs directly resulting from the use of artificial lighting systems. In the present study we developed a versatile modular culture system for experimental coral production ex situ, assembled solely using materials and equipment readily available from suppliers all over the world; this approach allows researchers from different institutions to perform truly replicated experimental set-ups, with the possibility to directly compare experimental results. Afterwards, we aimed to evaluate the effect of contrasting Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) levels, and light spectra emission on zooxanthellae photochemical performance, through the evaluation of the maximum quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm) (monitored non-invasively and non-destructively through Pulse Amplitude Modulation fluorometry, PAM), chlorophyll a content (also determined non-destructively by using the spectral reflectance index Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI), photosynthetic and accessory pigments, number of zooxanthellae, coral survival and growth. We studied two soft coral species, Sarcophyton cf. glaucum and Sinularia flexibilis, as they are good representatives of two of the most specious genera in family Alcyoniidae, which include several species with interest for biotechnological applications, as well as for the marine aquarium trade; we also studied two commercially important scleractinian corals: Acropora formosa and Stylophora pistillata. We used different light sources: hydrargyrum quartz iodide (HQI) lamps with different light color temperatures, T5 fluorescent lamps, Light Emitting Plasma (LEP) and Light Emitting Diode (LED). The results achieved revealed that keeping S. flexibilis fragments under the same light conditions as their mother colonies seems to be photobiologically acceptable for a short-term husbandry, notwithstanding the fact that they can be successfully stocked at lower PAR intensities. We also proved that low PAR intensities are suitable to support the ex situ culture S. cf. glaucum in captivity at lower production costs, since the survival recorded during the experiment was 100%, the physiological wellness of coral fragments was evidenced, and we did not detect significant differences in coral growth. Finally, we concluded that blue light sources, such as LED lighting, allow a higher growth for A. formosa and S. pistillata, and promote significant differences on microstructure organization and macrostructure morphometry in coral skeletons; these findings may have potential applications as bone graft substitutes for veterinary and/or other medical uses. Thus, LED technology seems to be a promising option for scleractinian corals aquaculture ex situ.

BACKGROUND: In patients with outer retinal degeneration, a differential pupil response to long wavelength (red) versus short wavelength (blue) light stimulation has been previously observed. The goal of this study was to quantify differences in the pupillary re-dilation following exposure to red versus blue light in patients with outer retinal disease and compare them with patients with optic neuropathy and with healthy subjects. DESIGN: Prospective comparative cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-three patients with outer retinal disease, 13 patients with optic neuropathy and 14 normal subjects. METHODS: Subjects were tested using continuous red and blue light stimulation at three intensities (1, 10 and 100 cd/m2) for 13 s per intensity. Pupillary re-dilation dynamics following the brightest intensity was analysed and compared between the three groups. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The parameters of pupil re-dilation used in this study were: time to recover 90% of baseline size; mean pupil size at early and late phases of re-dilation; and differential re-dilation time for blue versus red light. RESULTS: Patients with outer retinal disease showed a pupil that tended to stay smaller after light termination and thus had a longer time to recovery. The differential re-dilation time was significantly greater in patients with outer retinal disease (median = 28.0 s, P < 0.0001) compared with controls and patients with optic neuropathy. CONCLUSIONS: A differential response of pupil re-dilation following red versus blue light stimulation is present in patients with outer retinal disease but is not found in normal eyes or among patients with visual loss from optic neuropathy.

This paper presents a systematic comparison of OSL signals from Al(2)O(3):C when stimulated with blue and green light. Al(2)O(3):C detectors were irradiated with various doses and submitted to various bleaching regimes using yellow, green and blue light. Most of the investigations were carried out using Luxel (TM)-type detectors used in the commercial Luxet (TM) and InLight (TM) dosimetry systems (Landauer Inc.). Al(2)O(3):C single crystals and Al(2)O(3):C powder were also used to complement the investigations. The results show that, although blue stimulation provides faster readout times (OSL curves that decayed faster) and higher initial OSL intensity than green stimulation, blue stimulation introduced complicating factors. These include incomplete bleaching of the dosimetric trap when the Al(2)O(3):C detectors are bleached with yellow or green light and the OSL is recorded with blue light stimulation, and an increased residual level due to stimulation of charge carriers from deep traps. The results warrant caution when using blue stimulation to measure the OSL signal from Al(2)O(3):C detectors, particularly if the doses involved are low and the detectors have been previously exposed to high doses. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) using Methylene Blue (MB) as the photosensitizing compound and a Light-Emitting Diode (LED) in American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL). Hamsters were experimentally infected with Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. After the development of the lesions in the footpad, the animals were treated with MB three times a week for 3 months. Ten minutes after each application of MB, the lesions were irradiated with LED for 1 h. The lesions were evaluated weekly by the measurement of the hamster footpad thickness. At the end of the treatment the parasitic load was quantified in the regional lymph node of the hamsters. The treatment promoted a decrease in the thickness of infected footpad (P = 0.0001) and reduction in the parasitic load in the regional lymph node (P = 0.0007) of the animals from group treated with MB + LED. PDT using MB + LED in ACL caused by L. amazonensis shows a strong photodynamic effect. This therapy is very promising, once it is an inexpensive system and the own patient can apply it in their wound and in their house without the need of technical assistance. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness of the color change of hybrid light-emitting diode (LED) and low-intensity infrared diode laser devices for activating dental bleaching and to verify the occurrence of a color regression with time. Material and methods. A total of 180 specimens obtained from human premolars were immersed in a coffee solution for 15 days for darkening and then divided into eight experimental groups (n = 20 in each) as follows: G1, bleaching without light; G2, bleaching with halogen light; G3, bleaching with a blue LED (1000 mW/470 nm) and a laser device (120 mW/795 nm) simultaneously; G4, bleaching with an LED emitting blue light (1000 mW/470 nm); G5, bleaching with a blue LED (800 mW/470 nm) and a laser device (500 mW/830 nm) simultaneously; G6, bleaching with a blue LED device (800 mW); G7, bleaching with a green LED (600 mW/530 nm) and a laser device (120 mW/795 nm) simultaneously; and G8, bleaching with a green LED (600 mW). Three measurements were performed (at baseline and 14 days and 12 months after bleaching) using a Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer. The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and a Tukey test. Results. All groups showed significantly higher Delta E values than Group G1, with the exception of Group G8. Variations in the Delta E values at 14 days were significant when compared with those obtained at baseline and after 12 months. Conclusions. Light activation of the bleaching gel provided faster and more intense bleaching than use of the bleaching gel without light activation. Combinations of low-intensity diode lasers are ineffective as a bleaching gel activator. Color regression was observed after 12 months of storage.
Langmuir and langmuir-blodgett films of polyfluorenes and their use in polymer light-emitting diodes
Resumo:
The Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film properties of two polyfluorene derivatives, namely poly(2,7-9,9'-dihexylfluorene-dyil) (PDHF) and poly(9,9 dihexylfluorene-dyil-vynilene-alt-1,4-phenylene-vyninele) (PDHF-PV), are reported. Surface pressure (Pi-A) and surface potential (Delta V-A) isotherms indicated that PDHF-PV forms true monolayers at the air/water interface, but PDHF does not. LB films could be transferred onto various types of substrate for both PDHF and PDHF-PV. Only the LB films from PDHF-PV could withstand deposition of a layer of evaporated metal to form a light-emitting diode (PLED), which had typical rectifying characteristics and emitted blue light. It is inferred that the ability of the polymer to form true monomolecular layers at the air/water interface seems to be associated with the viability of the LB films in PLEDs.
