From the 1930's, particularly during World War II, some different phenomena rise as alternatives to strengthen the people's physical, especially in countries like Germany and Italy. Keeping different proportions, that phenomenon was seen in Brazil through a policy to increase the value of the physical activities, mainly during the Estado Novo. This article tries to analyze that policy.

Objective: to investigate the quality of life among physically active post-menopausal women with and without a diagnosis of osteoporosis. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out through interview. All the participating women volunteered to take part of this study through previous contact by telephone. The characteristics and objectives of the interview were explained in addition to confirmation of their post-menopausal status. There were two groups of 21 volunteers each: group 1 were non-osteoporotic women (64.38 ± 4.24 years-old) and group 2 were osteoporotic women (67.81 ± 4.19 years-old). Each volunteer was asked to fulfill a preliminary form in order to register personal information, clinical history, co-morbidities and health care. Following, the SF-36 questionnaire was applied. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used to assess differences between the two groups. Results: there was a significant difference (p < 0.05) between both groups only with regard to the Role Physical and General Health components of the SF-36 form showing a better performance to group 1. Condusion: post-menopausal women with a diagnosis of osteoporosis that did not sustain a fracture may present a similar quality of life, as compared to non-osteoporotic post-menopausal women.

Background: Many studies have shown that physical exercises are able to stimulate bone formation and increase bone mass, constituting a therapeutic modality to treat bone loss due to osteoporosis. However, some points about the intensity, duration and frequency of the exercises remain confusing and contradictory. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of a progressive loading exercise program on femur of osteopenic rats. To induce osteopenia we used the animal model of ovariectomy (OVX). Forty animals was studied and divided into 4 groups: sham-operated sedentary (SS); ovariectomy-sedentary (OS); sham-operated training (ST) and ovariectomy training (OT). The trained groups performed jumps into water: 4 series of 10 jumps each, with an overload of 50% to 80% of the animal's body weight, during 8 weeks. Femora were submitted to a physical properties evaluation, a biomechanical test, calcium and phosphorus content measurement and a morphometric histological evaluation. Results: osteopenic animals showed a decrease of bone strength and lower values of bone weights, bone density and calcium content. The exercised osteopenic rats showed higher values of geometrical, physical properties, bone strength and calcium content compared to controls. The results of the present study indicate that the progressive loading exercise program had stimulatory effects on femora of osteopenic rats. It seems that the intensity and duration of the protocol used produced bone structural adaptations, which contributed to reverse bone loss due to ovariectomy.

Self-efficacy to regular practice of physical activity (PA) can be defined as the ability to keep practicing exercises even with some obstacles that could appear. It is constituted through the influence of 4 main sources: mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion and physiological and affective states. The aim of the study was to measure the level of self-efficacy to the regular practice of PA, its construction sources and correlate the level of self-efficacy with each one of the sources. An amount of 196 practitioners of PA took part in this study. The results showed that the level of self-efficacy was 111.19 points in scale that can range from 18 to 162 points. The most prominent source in the construction of self-efficacy was the social persuasion, with an average of 27.64 points in scale that can range from 4 to 36 points. For the correlations, it was used the Pearson coefficient (r). Mastery experiences stood out among the other sources (r = .30). The results agree with the literature, establishing the importance of the encouragement of close people in the maintenance of the behavior to practice PA, as well as to observe positive models, success experiences and feel comfortable during the exercises. © FTCD/FIP-MOC.

Physical inactivity is associated with chronic diseases in older adults. There are different domains of physical activity, such as leisure and locomotion. This study investigate the associations between different domains of physical activity, comorbidities and aging in hypertensive adults. Participants included 192 hypertensive respondents classified in groups of active and insufficiently active for leisure-time, locomotion, occupation and total time. They were stratified in age groups. Waist circumference was measured and comorbidities were self-reported. The chi-square test analyzed these associations; a one-way ANOVA compared the age groups (significance at p <0.05). The mean total time and occupational physical activity were lower for groups ages over 60 and 70 years, respectively. Occupational activity was associated with age in the female group, and with cholesterol and diabetes in males, who also had physical activity of locomotion associated with waist circumference. Physical activity of hypertensive patients is associated with comorbidities in different age groups and sex.
