L’objecte de la proposta presentada en el concurs va ser desenvolupar un projecte d’hàbitat accessible per a persones amb paràlisi cerebral o discapacitat física greument afectades que resolgui les necessitats d’autonomia que han de permetre la seva emancipació.La proposta es va definir a partir d’un treball previ de comunicació amb usuaris, familiars, associacions, metges, neuròlegs i cuidadors. Aquest mètode fonamentat en el treball participatiu és la base d’un projecte de qualitat que pugui donar resposta a les necessitats dels usuaris reflectint aquestes inquietuds en els criteris adoptats al programa funcional i millorant els requisits de mínims que estableixen les normatives urbanístiques i sobretot edificatòries. Aquest mètode de treball participatiu i inclusiu és una constant clau durant tot el procés de projecte i posterior direcció de les obres.

Automatic evolution of conceptual building architectures

This thesis describes research in which genetic programming is used to automatically evolve shape grammars that construct three dimensional models of possible external building architectures. A completely automated fitness function is used, which evaluates the three dimensional building models according to different geometric properties such as surface normals, height, building footprint, and more. In order to evaluate the buildings on the different criteria, a multi-objective fitness function is used. The results obtained from the automated system were successful in satisfying the multiple objective criteria as well as creating interesting and unique designs that a human-aided system might not discover. In this study of evolutionary design, the architectures created are not meant to be fully functional and structurally sound blueprints for constructing a building, but are meant to be inspirational ideas for possible architectural designs. The evolved models are applicable for today's architectural industries as well as in the video game and movie industries. Many new avenues for future work have also been discovered and highlighted.

Royal Navy Ship Collection, 1784-1816

Includes 41 copies of plans of Royal Navy ships, ranging in date from 1784 to 1816. Some of the ships included are the Bonne Citoyenne, Niagara, Epervier, Comet, Contest, Ferret, Childers, Anacreon, Florida, Hind, Hermes, Psyche, Princess Charlotte, Contest, Prince Regent, Caroline, Thetis, Statira, Forte, Pelican, Crescent, Euryalus, Chesapeake, Acasta, Banterer, Leda, Endymion, Amphion, President, Tonnant, Ramillies, Boyne, and St. Lawrence. Many of these ships were used by the British during the War of 1812. The original plans are at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. Also included is a copy of a handwritten chart with the number and size of the British and United States Squadrons on Lake Ontario, March 1814 (during the War of 1812). This includes the number and caliber of long guns and carronades, as well as the weight of metal, for different ships. British ships include the Prince Regent, Princess Charlotte, Wolfe, Royal George, Melville, Moira, Sir Sidney Smith, and Beresford. American ships include the [General] Pike, Madison, Oneida, Sylph, Gen’l Tompkins[?], Conquest, Fair American, Ontario, Pert, Asp, and Lady of the Lake. Also included is a copy of a map titled “Track of the Action”, tracking the movements of the HMS Java and the USS Constitution, dated December 29, 1812, and a copy of a map of Lake Champlain and Plattsburgh Bay showing the position of a vessel(s), undated.

Proyectos arquitectónicos: la lenta y paciente búsqueda

Esta comunicación aborda la especificidad de la actividad investigadora del proyecto arquitectónico y su aplicación en la docencia de la asignatura de proyectos arquitectónicos. Frente a las investigaciones de otras disciplinas científicas, la arquitectura como disciplina específica en el campo de la investigación plantea los objetivos, instrumentos, reflexiones, aspiraciones de una manera autónoma. La docencia de la asignatura de Proyectos Arquitectónicos en el primer ciclo de los estudios supone un aprendizaje de la arquitectura como una investigación acumulativa y comprende dos nociones primordiales: la construcción y el lugar. El proyecto de arquitectura es un proceso formativo de aprendizaje constituido por una concatenación de juicios que fluyen desde la intuición y el conocimiento y culminan con la construcción de una estructura formal. Proyectar es construir, esto es, ordenar y relacionar elementos materiales para generar sistemas espaciales caracterizados por la consistencia formal y la identidad propia. El aprendizaje del proyecto se efectúa a partir de la mejor arquitectura de los maestros. Los ejemplos de los maestros son la mejor constatación del conocimiento arquitectónico. La referencia ilustra con eficacia y suscita el ánimo de emulación. A través de los ejercicios analíticos, el estudiante identifica en la obra de referencia la resolución arquitectónica detallada que es capaz de imantar los elementos arquitectónicos dotándolos de consistencia. El estudio y el análisis de las propuestas previas de la arquitectura de los maestros nos muestran que los Maestros también dudan y la obra modélica es el resultado de un proceso lento y gradual. Por tanto, la docencia en el primer ciclo de los estudios supone un aprendizaje de la arquitectura como una investigación acumulativa
