By means of Tersoff and Morse potentials, a three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulation is performed to study atomic force microscopy cutting on silicon monocrystal surface. The interatomic forces between the workpiece and the pin tool and the atoms of workpiece themselves are simulated. Two partial edge dislocations are introduced into workpiece Si, it is found that the motion of dislocations does not occur during the atomic force microscopy cutting processing. Simulation results show that the shear stress acting on dislocations is far below the yield strength of Si. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Molecular dynamics simulations of nanoindentation are performed on monocrystal copper. A new "contact atoms" method is presented for calculating the contact area. Compared with conventional methods, this method can provide the contact area more accurately not only for sink-in but also for pile-up situation. The effect of tip radius on indentation is investigated too. The results indicate that the measured hardness of the material will become higher as the tip radius increases.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), due to their exceptional magnetic, electrical and mechanical properties, are promising candidates for several technical applications ranging from nanoelectronic devices to composites. Young's modulus holds the special status in material properties and micro/nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) design. The excellently regular structures of CNTs facilitate accurate simulation of CNTs' behavior by applying a variety of theoretical methods. Here, three representative numerical methods, i.e., Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD), density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD), were applied to calculate Young's modulus of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) with chirality (3,3). The comparative studies showed that the most accurate result is offered by time consuming DFT simulation. MID simulation produced a less accurate result due to neglecting electronic motions. Compared to the two preceding methods the best performance, with a balance between efficiency and precision, was deduced by CPMD.

The study here reported is a survey of the most common non-parasitic nematode families of Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, with descriptions and figures, so that ecological workers and students of invertebrate zoology may be encouraged not to pass over this highly interesting and abundant invertebrate phylum. This survey is not a complete account of the free-living nematode population of the Bay, however, since only the middle section of the Bay was sampled and since the collections were not made systematically throughout the year. The physical and chemical factors of Chesapeake Bay may be found in several publications of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Solomons Island, Maryland, and in the records of the Chesapeake Bay Institute, Annapolis, Maryland.

This paper reports the application of Advanced Process Control (APC) techniques for improving the thermal energy efficiency of a paperboard-making process by regulating the Machine Direction (MD) profile of the basis weight and moisture content of the paper-board. A Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is designed so that the sheet moisture and basis weight tracking errors along with variations of the sheet moisture and basis weight are reduced. Also, the drainage is maximised through improved wet-end stability which can facilitate driving the sheet moisture set-point closer to its upper specification limit over time. It is shown that the proposed strategy can result in reducing steam usage by 8-10%. A simulation study based on a UK board machine is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed technique. © 2011 Intl Journal of Adv Mechatr.

This paper reports on the design, fabrication, and performance of an integrated electro-absorptive modulated laser based on butt-joint configuration for 10Gbit/s application. This paper mainly aims at two aspects. One is to improve the optical coupling between the laser and modulator; another is to increase the bandwidth of such devices by reducing the capacitance parameter of the modulator. The integrated devices exhibit high static and dynamic characteristics. Typical threshold current is 15mA,with some value as low as 8mA. Output power at 100mA is more than 10mW. The extinction characteristics, modulation bandwidth, and electrical return loss are measured. 3dB bandwidth more than 10GHz is monitored.

The indention simulation of the crystal Ni is carried out by molecular dynamics technique (MD) to study the mechanical behavior at nanometer scales, the indenter tips with sphere shape is used. Some defects such as dislocations, point defects are observed. It is found that defects (dislocations, amorphous) nucleated is from local region near the pin tip or the sample surface. The temperature distribution of local region is analyzed and it can explain our MD simulation result.

The Sands House (18AP47) is located at 130 Prince George Street in Annapolis, Maryland. Historical documentation notes that a house stood on the property at least by 1706 (Liber W.T. 2, 1706: 402). Archaeological evidence indicates that an earthfast structure was built in about 1700. This building has been modified and renovated extensively. In the 1720's a fieldstone foundation was put under the house and in the late 18th century an addition was made to the west side of the house. In 1904 an addition was put on the rear of the house and the entire structure was raised. Archaeological excavations were conducted inside and outside the Sands House in 1988 by Archaeology in Annapolis. This work was sponsored by Historic Annapolis Foundation and the University of Maryland, College Park. This volume is the final site report for the archaeological investigations at the Sands House.

Chamber music repertoire featuring the piano blossomed from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth century. The quantity of works increased greatly during this time and the quality of these works reached the highest level. Among the many symbolic works that were composed were sonatas for a single string instrument with piano, piano trios, quartets: and quintets as well as two-piano works and four-hand duets. Being able to study and perform many of these iconic works before I graduated was one of the major goals I set for myself as a collaborative pianist. The abundance of repertoire has made it easy to choose works considered "iconic" for my dissertation's three recitals. Iconic is defined as "very famous or popular, especially being considered to represent particular opinions or a particular time" in the online Cambridge Advanced Leamer's Dictionary & Thesaurus © Cambridge University. The compositions featured in the recitals were composed from 1842 through 1941, including works by Schumann, Brahms, Faure, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and Lutoslawski. Choosing the repertoire with my fellow performers in mind was an important part of this dissertation. In addition to trying to make balanced programs which include variety, working with different instruments and performers is one of the most fulfilling parts of the musical experience for me as a collaborative pianist. Joining me for the concerts were members of the Aeolus String Quartet (violinist Nicholas Tavani, violinist Rachel Shapiro, violist Greg Luce, and cellist Alan Richardson), pianist Hsiao-Ying Lin (a doctoral student from the Peabody Conservatory), and my colleagues from the Peabody Institute Preparatory Division (faculty violinist Dr. Christian Tremblay and cellist Alicia Ward), and Derek Smith, Associate Principal violist of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestras). The three recitals were performed in the Gildenhom and Ulrich Recital Halls at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland. They are recorded on CD and available on compact discs, which can be found in the Digital Repository at the University of Maryland (DRUM).
