Sexual maturity and egg production in an unexploited population of the red squat lobster Pleuroncodes monodon (Decapoda, Galatheidae) from Central America

The squat lobster Pleuroncodes monodon is one of the most common and abundant galatheid species in the deepwater fishery of Pacific coast of America. In contrast with Peru and Chile, the red squat lobster is not commercially exploited in Costa Rica. Here we estimated the size of sexual maturity and analysed egg production in P. monodon from the Pacific of Costa Rica; the results might be important for an adequate management strategy when initiating a sustainable fishery of this resource in Costa Rica. Analyses of allometric growth revealed that females and males reached their morphological sexual maturity at 26.9 and 30.4 mm CL. respectively. The percentage of immature females captured in the present study (54%) suggests that almost half of females are able to reproduce before they are caught. Egg production was positively correlated with body size; females that measured between 24.1 and 29.0 mm CL contributed roughly 90% to the offspring production of the population. Females from Costa Rica had a considerably lower average egg volume (0.039 mm(3)) and higher fecundity (9810) than females from Chile. In comparison to other American galatheids P. monodon from Costa Rica produces numerous but small eggs, a typical strategy of species with a prolonged larval development. An analysis between our results and information published about P. monodon from Chile also revealed differences in the size-frequency distribution shape of both populations. The non-exploited character of the Costa Rican P. monodon population and a latitudinal (temperature-related) cline in body size might be associated with these differences. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Pulsatory andesite lava flow at Bagana Volcano

Using a time series of TerraSAR-X spaceborne radar images we have measured the pulsatory motion of an andesite lava flow over a 14-month period at Bagana volcano, Papua New Guinea. Between October 2010 and December 2011, lava flowed continuously down the western flank of the volcano forming a 3 km-long blocky lava flow with a channel, levees, overflows and branches. We captured four successive pulses of lava advancing down the channel system, the first such behaviour of an andesite flow to be recorded using radar. Each pulse had a volume of the order of 107 m3 emplaced over many weeks. The average extrusion rate estimated from the radar data was 0.92 ± 0.35 m3 s-1 , and varied between 0.3 and 1.8 m3 s-1, with higher rates occurring earlier in each pulse. This, together with observations of sulphur dioxide emissions, explosions and incandescence suggest a variable supply rate of magma through Bagana’s conduit as the most likely source of the pulsatory behaviour.

A Ciência da Localização é amplamente utilizada por várias outras ciências, inclusive pelo Marketing, que, com o apoio da Geografia, forma o Geomarketing, área de estudo cada vez mais utilizada para a localização do ponto-de-venda. Na divisão do composto do Marketing, uma das estratégias é o canal de distribuição em que se encontra o Marketing de varejo. A localização do ponto-de-venda é uma das preocupações do empresário varejista, quando decide abrir uma loja ou uma nova loja para aumentar a sua rede. A abertura de um ponto-de-venda pode ser realizada intuitivamente pelo próprio varejista ou por um profissional do Marketing, com estudos técnicos e pesquisas. Nesse contexto, a criação de uma unidade escolar pode passar pelo mesmo processo técnico usado na abertura de lojas comerciais. O Colégio Americano Batista, situado no Centro de Vitória, Estado do Espírito Santo, instituição quase centenária, encontrava-se dentro do processo de transferência do comércio da cidade para outra área e, com isso, poderia sofrer as conseqüências desse processo. O presente trabalho concentra-se em estudar o impacto provocado pela abertura de novas unidades no total de matrículas da Instituição.

A disease evolution model with uncertain parameters

In this study we consider the SIS epidemiological model (susceptible-infected-susceptible) in which the transmission and recuperation rates are considered fuzzy sets. The concepts of possibility measures and fuzzy expectancy value are used to obtain the basic reproduction value for infected groups with different viral charge.

Case-based system: Indexing and retrieval with fuzzy hypercube

In some applications with case-based system, the attributes available for indexing are better described as linguistic variables instead of receiving numerical treatment. In these applications, the concept of fuzzy hypercube can be applied to give a geometrical interpretation of similarities among cases. This paper presents an approach that uses geometrical properties of fuzzy hypercube space to make indexing and retrieval processes of cases.
