The chronostratigraphy of Guandao section has served as the foundation for numerous studies of the end-Permian extinction and biotic recovery in south China. Guandao section is continuous from the Permian-Triassic boundary to the Upper Triassic.Conodonts enable broad delineation of stage and substage boundaries and calibration of foraminifer biostratigraphy as follows. Changhsingian- Griesbachian: first Hindeodus parvus, and first appearance of foraminifers Postcladella kalhori and Earlandia sp. Griesbachian-Dienerian: first Neospathodus dieneri, and last appearance of foraminifer P. grandis. Dienerian-Smithian: first Novispathodus waageni and late Dienerian first appearance of foraminifer Hoyenella ex gr. sinensis. Smithian-Spathian: first Nv? crassatus and last appearance of foraminifers Arenovidalina n. sp. and Glomospirella cf. vulgaris. Spathian-Aegean: first Chiosella timorensis and first appearance of foraminifer Meandrospira dinarica. Aegean-Bithynian: first Nicoraella germanica and first appearance of foraminifer Pilammina densa. Bithynian-Pelsonian: after last Neogondolella regalis, prior to first Paragondolella bulgarica and first appearance of foraminifer Aulotortus eotriasicus. Pelsonian-Illyrian: first Pg. excelsa and last appearance of foraminifers Meandrospira ? deformata and Pilamminella grandis. Illyrian-Fassanian: first Budurovignathus truempyi, and first appearance of foraminifers Abriolina mediterranea and Paleolituonella meridionalis. Fassanian-Longobardian: first Bv. mungoensis and last appearance of foraminifer A. mediterranea. Longobardian-Cordevolian: first Quadralella polygnathiformis and last appearance of foraminifers Turriglomina mesotriasica and Endotriadella wirzi. The section contains primary magnetic signature with frequent reversals occurring around the Permian-Triassic, Olenekian-Anisian, and Anisian-Ladinian boundaries. Predominantly normal polarity occurs in the lower Smithian, Bithynian, and Longobardian-Cordevolian. Predominantly reversed polarity occurs in the upper Griesbachian, Induan-Olenekian, Pelsonian and lower Illyrian. Reversals match well with the GPTS. Large amplitude carbon isotope excursions, attaining values as low as -2.9 per mil d13C and high as +5.7 per mil d13C, characterize the Lower Triassic and basal Anisian. Values stabilize around +2 per mil d13C through the Anisian to Carnian. Similar signatures have been reported globally. Magnetic susceptibility and synthetic gamma ray logs show large fluctuations in the Lower Triassic and an overall decline in magnitude of fluctuation through the Middle and Upper Triassic. The largest spikes in magnetic susceptibility and gamma ray, indicating greater terrestrial lithogenic flux, correspond to positive d13C excursions. Several volcanic ash horizons occur in the Lower Triassic and Olenekian-Anisian boundary. High resolution U-Pb analysis of zircons provide a robust age of 247.2 Ma for the Olenekian-Anisian boundary.

The north Icelandic shelf is partly distinguished by the Tjörnes Fracture Zone featuring numerous active basins in a mud-dominated shelf environment. Late Glacial and Holocene high-resolution sedimentary records from this area have been studied with tephrochronology as the main tool for correlation and for exact timing of palaeoceanographic events in the area. Data from three new piston cores from the shelf demonstrate the importance of tephra markers for the first chronological evaluation and correlation of the cores. The correlation is extended with lithological logs and with magnetic susceptibility records. A detailed multidisciplinary study (including biostratigraphy and tephrochronology) of a late Holocene record of predominantly muddy sediments at the same location demonstrates that marked variations in the distribution of water masses occurred repeatedly through the last 4500 cal. yr. Of special interest is the exact timing of a marked drop in sea-surface temperature in the area, indicated by ice rafting debris concentration, to about 50 years before the Hekla 3 eruption, which occurred at 2980 cal. yr BP. This appears to predate most records of a general cooling event in NW Europe by a couple of centuries. Two different possible age models, one based on 14C dates combined with tephra markers and one based on tephra markers alone, are discussed in context with the problem of different marine reservoir ages of the water masses in the area.

A total of 35 calcareous nannofossil datums were found in the Neogene sediments recovered at five sites (Sites 803-807) on the Ontong Java Plateau in the equatorial Pacific during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 130. Among them, 12 datums in the Pleistocene-upper Pliocene sequences were correlated with magnetostratigraphy. Pliocene and Miocene calcareous nannofossil assemblages in 289 samples obtained from Holes 804C, 805B, 805C, and 806B were studied. Reticulofenestra coccolith size distribution patterns in these Pliocene-Miocene sediments were also revealed through the present investigation.

Seven sites drilled in the central New Hebrides Island Arc during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 134 yielded varying quantities of upper Eocene through Pleistocene calcareous nannofossils. Most of the Miocene and Pliocene strata were absent from Sites 827-831 drilled along the collisional boundary between the Australia and Pacific plates where the North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge and Bougainville Guyot are being subducted. Sites 832 and 833, drilled in the intra-arc North Aoba Basin, contained upper Miocene through Pleistocene and early Pliocene through Pleistocene nannofossils, respectively. Detailed range charts displaying species abundances and age interpretations are presented for all of the sites. Despite problems of reworked assemblages, poor preservation, overgrowths and/or dilution from volcaniclastics, the nannofossil biostratigraphy delineates several repeated sections at Site 829 in the accretionary prism adjacent to Espiritu Santo Island. Paleogene pelagic sediments equivalent to those in a reference section at Site 828 appear to have been scraped from the downgoing North d'Entrecasteaux Ridge and accreted onto the forearc during the Pleistocene. Other sediments in the forearc include Pleistocene olistostromal trench-fill deposits containing clasts of various ages and compositions. Some of the clasts and olistoliths have affinities to rocks exposed on the neighboring islands and environs, whereas others are of uncertain origin. The matrix of the olistostromes is predominately Pleistocene, however, matrices of mixed nannofossil ages are frequently encountered. Comparisons of the mixed nannofossil ages in the matrices with sedimentological and structural data suggest that sediment mixing resulting from fault movement is subordinate to that occurring during deposition.

The calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy of ODP Leg 177 Sites 1088 and 1090 (Subantarctic sector from the Atlantic Ocean) is discussed. Most nannofossil zonal boundaries of Martini (1971) and Okada and Bukry (1980) were recognized for the studied mid-high-latitude sediments. Conventional low-latitude marker species such as Amaurolithus spp., Discoaster spp., Triquetrorhabdulus spp., Ceratolithus spp. were recorded as rare and scattered, which impeded the development of a detailed nannofossil biostratigraphic zonation of some Miocene and Pliocene intervals. Because of the absence of some primary biostratigraphic marker species, additional second-order bioevents, such as the first occurrence of Calcidiscus macintyrei and the last occurrence of Coccolithus miopelagicus, have been used to approximate the base of zones NN7 and NN8, respectively. Several disconformities disturbing the Pliocene and Miocene intervals of Site 1090 could be determined based on nannofossil distribution although the occurrence of intervals with dissolved nannofloras and low species diversity prevented a reliable age assignment. An acme of small Gephyrocapsa was recognized near the lower/middle Pliocene boundary, close to the NN15-NN16 zonal boundary, presenting an event for further improvement of the calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy of this interval time. The first occurrence of Pseudoemiliania lacunosa (>4 µm) occurs close to this interval, representing a fairly reliable event to approximate the base of NN15 zone when other biozonal events are absent. A paracme of R. pseudoumbilicus (>7 µm) was detected in the lower Pliocene NN12 and in the upper Miocene NN11. These temporary absences of the species seem to be isochronous between high-latitude and low-middle-latitude areas.

Upper Miocene foraminiferal nannofossil ooze and chalk from DSDP Hole 552A in the northeast Atlantic Ocean have been closely sampled for biostratigraphic, paleomagnetic, and stable-isotopic studies. Sampling at 10-cm intervals resulted in an uppermost Miocene isotope stratigraphy with a 1000- to 3000-yr. resolution. Covariance in benthic (Planulina wuellerstorfi) and planktonic (Globigerina bulloides) foraminiferal d18O records is taken as evidence for variability in continental ice volume. Our best estimate is that glacial maxima occurred at -5.0 and ~ 5.5 Ma and lasted no more than 20,000 yrs. These events probably lowered sea level by 60 m below the latest Miocene average. There is little oxygen-isotope evidence, however, for a prolonged glaciation during the last 2 m.y. of the late Miocene. High- and low-frequency variability in the d13C record of foraminifers is useful for correlation among North Atlantic DSDP Sites 408, 410, 522, 610, and 611, and for correlation with sites in other oceans. Similar d13C changes are seen in P. wuellerstorfi and G. bulloides, but the amplitude of the signal is always greater in G. bulloides. Variability in d13C common to both species probably reflects variability in the d13C of total CO2 in seawater. Major long-term features in the d13C record include a latest Miocene maximum (P. wuellerstorfi = 1.5 per mil ) in paleomagnetic Chron 7, an abrupt decrease in d13C at -6.2 Ma, and a slight increase at -5.5 Ma. The decrease in d13C at -6.2 Ma, which has been paleomagnetically dated only twice before, occurs in the upper reversed part of Chronozone 6 at Holes 552A and 611C, in excellent agreement with earlier studies. Cycles in d13C with a period of ~ 10 4 yrs. are interpreted as changes in seawater chemistry, which may have resulted from orbitally induced variability in continental biomass. Samples of P. wuellerstorfi younger than 6 Ma from throughout the North Atlantic have d13C near lo, on average ~ l per mil greater than samples of the same age in the Pacific Ocean. Thus, there is no evidence for cessation of North Atlantic Deep Water production resulting from the Messinian "salinity crisis." Biostratigraphic results indicate continuous sedimentation during the late Miocene after about -6.5 Ma at Hole 552A. Nannofossil biostratigraphy is complicated by the scarcity of low-latitude marker species, but middle and late Miocene Zones NN7 through NN11 are recognized. A hiatus is present at -6.5 Ma, on the basis of simultaneous first occurrences of Amaurolithusprimus, Amaurolithus delicatus, Amaurolithus amplificus, and Scyphosphaera globulata. The frequency and duration of older hiatuses increase downsection in Hole 552A, as suggested by calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy. Paleomagnetic results at Hole 552A indicate a systematic pattern of inclination changes. Chronozone 6 was readily identified because of its characteristic nannoflora (sequential occurrences of species assigned to the genus Amaurolithus) and the d13C decrease in foraminifers, but its lower reversed interval is condensed. Only the lower normal interval of Chronozone 5 was recognized at Hole 552A; the upper normal interval and the lowest Gilbert sediment are not recognized, owing to low intensity of magnetization and to coring disturbance. Interpreting magnetic reversals below Chronozone 6 was difficult because of hiatuses, but a lower normally magnetized interval is probably Chronozone 7. Correlation between DSDP Hole 552A and other North Atlantic sites is demonstrated using coiling direction changes in the planktonic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina. At most sites this genus changed its coiling preference from dominantly right to dominantly left during the late Miocene. At Hole 552A this event probably occurred about 7 m.y. ago. At the same time, P. wuellerstorfi had maximum d13C values. A similar d13C maximum and coiling change occurred together in Chron 7 at Hole 611C, and at Hole 610E. In sediment younger than -5.5 Ma, the coiling of small Neogloboquadrina species is random, but the larger species N. atlantica retains preferential left coiling.

Late Neogene biostratigraphy of diatoms has been investigated from two sites occupied during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 186 off the coast of northeast Japan. A unique aspect of ODP Leg 186 was the installation of two permanent borehole geophysical observatories at the deep-sea terrace along the Japan Trench. The Neogene subsidence history of the forearc was documented from both Sites 1150 and 1151, and Quaternary to middle Miocene (16 Ma) sediments represent a nearly continuous stratigraphic sequence including numerous ash records, especially during the past 9 m.y. Diatoms are found in most samples in variable abundance and in a moderately well preserved state throughout the sequence. The assemblages are characterized consistently by age-diagnostic species of Denticulopsis and Neodenticula found in regions of high surface water productivity typical of middle to high latitudes. The Neogene North Pacific diatom zonation divides the Miocene to Quaternary sequences fundamentally well, except that the latest Miocene through early Pliocene Thalassiosira oestrupii Subzone is not applicable. Miocene and late Pliocene through Pleistocene diatom datum levels that have been proven to be of great stratigraphic utility in the North Pacific Ocean appear to be nearly isochronous within the level of resolution constrained by core catcher sample spacing. The taxonomy and stratigraphy of previously described species determined to be useful across the Miocene/Pliocene boundary have been investigated on the basis of the evolutionary changes within the Thalassiosira trifulta group. The biostratigraphically important forms belonging to the genus Thalassiosira have been illustrated with scanning electron micrographs.

Site 1256 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 206 to the Guatemala Basin on the eastern flank of the East Pacific Rise yielded a near-complete, middle Miocene-Quaternary carbonate-rich section that provides an opportunity to study low-latitude biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic events. The sedimentary sequence in Hole 1256B has been zoned using calcareous nannofossils according to the biostratigraphic schemes by Martini of 1971 (modified by Martini and Müller in 1986) and Okada and Bukry of 1980. The nannofossil assemblage is characteristic of the low latitudes, with abundant Gephyrocapsa, Discoaster, and Sphenolithus, and is in general moderately to well preserved, depending on nannofossil abundance and the presence of diatoms. Age estimates for the first occurrence and last occurrence of Reticulofenestra rotaria were derived from biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy independently and assigned to 7.18 and 6.32 Ma, respectively. Linear sedimentation rates, calculated using 28 nannofossil datums and age estimates, are high in the middle Miocene, decrease from the late Miocene to the Pliocene, then increase upsection. The abrupt drop in carbonate mass accumulation rates during the early late Miocene is referred to as the "carbonate crash." This pattern reflects (1) the long-trend decrease of productivity as the site moves away from the upwelling system at the equatorial divergence as well as (2) fluctuation in the chemistry of the bottom waters associated with production of the North Atlantic Bottom Water and ventilation via the Panama Gateway. A basement age of 14.5 Ma was obtained by extrapolating the 39.1-m/m.y. rate in the middle Miocene to the basement at 250.7 meters below seafloor, and is consistent with the ~15-Ma age of the oceanic crust estimated from marine magnetic anomalies. Reworked nannofossils and lithologic changes were used to unravel postdepositional history, and three episodes were recognized, one of which in the latest Miocene can be widely correlated.

Firm stratigraphic correlations are needed to evaluate the global significance of unconformity bounded units (sequences). We correlate the well-developed uppermost Campanian and Maestrichtian sequences of the New Jersey Coastal Plain to the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) by integrating Sr-isotopic stratigraphy and biostratigraphy. To do this, we developed a Maestrichtian (ca. 73-65 Ma) Sr-isotopic reference section at Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 525A in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean. Maestrichtian strata can then be dated by measuring their 87Sr/86Sr composition, calibrating to the GPTS of S. C. Cande and D. V. Kent (1993, personal commun.), and using the equation Age (Ma) = 37326.894-52639.89 (87Sr/86Sr). Sr-stratigraphic resolution for the Maestrichtian is estimated as +-1.2 to +-2 m.y. At least two unconformity-bounded units comprise the uppermost Campanian to Maestrichtian strata in New Jersey. The lower one, the Marshalltown sequence, is assigned to calcareous nannofossil Zones CC20/21 (~NC19) and CC22b (~NC20). It ranges in age from ~74.1 to 69.9 Ma based on Sr-isotope age estimates. The overlying Navesink sequence is assigned to calcareous nannoplankton Zones CC25-26 (~NC21-23); it ranges in age from 69.3 to 65 Ma based on Sr-isotope age estimates. The upper part of this sequence, the Tinton Formation, has no calcareous planktonic control; Sr-isotopes provide an age estimate of 66 +- 1.2 Ma (latest Maestrichtian). Sequence boundaries at the base and the top of the Marshalltown sequence match boundaries elsewhere in the Atlantic Coastal Plain (Owens and Gohn, 1985) and the inferred global sea-level record of Haq et al. (1987); they support eustatic changes as the mechanism controlling depositional history of this sequence. However, the latest Maestrichtian record in New Jersey does not agree with Haq et al. (1987); we attribute this to correlation and time-scale differences near the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. High sedimentation rates in the latest Maestrichtian of New Jersey (Shrewsbury Member of the Red Bank Formation and the Tinton Formation) suggest tectonic uplift and/or rapid progradation during deposition of the highstand systems tract.

The strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) of marine barite microcrystals separated from Cretaceous sedimentary deposits from Ocean Drilling Program and Deep Sea Drilling Project sites from the Pacific and Indian Oceans have been compared to the composite Sr isotope curve of McArthur et al. The barite in these cores accurately recorded the seawater 87Sr/86Sr ratio, thereby reaffirming the composite Cretaceous strontium curve. Moreover, marine barite is a more reliable recorder of 87Sr/86Sr than is carbonate in sedimentary deposits with high clay content, thereby providing an opportunity for Sr isotope stratigraphy and dating in carbonate-poor or diagenetically altered sections. We have used the barite-derived Sr isotope record to refine the biostratigraphic age models of the sites investigated.

The major objectives of Leg 133 were (1) to define the evolution of the carbonate platforms on the northeastern Australian margin, including their relationship to adjoining basins; and (2) to understand the effects of climate and sea level on their development in space and time (Davies, McKenzie, Palmer-Julson, et al., 1991, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.133.1991). Sixteen sites were drilled, and more than 5.5 km of Neogene core was recovered during Leg 133. However, recovery of Paleogene sediments was unexpectedly poor (a total of a few meters), and the sediments were poorly dated because of strong diagenesis. On the other hand, Site 210 drilled in this region during Leg 21 yielded an expanded Paleogene section, which contains abundant calcareous microfossils. Biostratigraphic information for this section given in Burns, Andrews, et al. (1973, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.21.1973) was based primarily on shipboard results. Detailed calcareous nannofossil and planktonic foraminifer biostratigraphies have not been published. Here we provide a detailed documentation of the calcareous nannofossil distribution in the section, biostratigraphically date the section using the modern nannofossil zonation of Okada and Bukry (1980. doi:10.1016/0377-8398(80)90016-X), and construct an age-depth curve based on current knowledge of nannofossil magnetobiochronology. This should provide a useful Paleogene biostratigraphic reference in the northeastern Australian sea, as Site 210 has apparently yielded the most complete Paleogene record in the region. The detailed biostratigraphy should provide a better age constraint for the regional Eocene-Oligocene hiatus recognized previously (e.g., Jenkins and Srinivasan, 1986, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.90.113.1986) and should be useful for future studies on various aspects of Paleogene history of the northeastern Australian sea.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 188 to Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, several of the shipboard scientists formed the High-Resolution Integrated Stratigraphy Committee (HiRISC). The committee was established in order to furnish an integrated data set from the Pliocene portion of Site 1165 as a contribution to the ongoing debate about Pliocene climate and climate evolution in Antarctica. The proxies determined in our various laboratories were the following: magnetostratigraphy and magnetic properties, grain-size distributions (granulometry), near-ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectrophotometry, calcium carbonate content, characteristics of foraminifer, diatom, and radiolarian content, clay mineral composition, and stable isotopes. In addition to the HiRISC samples, other data sets contained in this report are subsets of much larger data sets. We included these subsets in order to provide the reader with a convenient integrated data set of Pliocene-Pleistocene strata from the East Antarctic continental margin. The data are presented in the form of 14 graphs (in addition to the site map). Text and figure captions guide the reader to the original data sets. Some preliminary interpretations are given at the end of the manuscript.

Age dating of Paleogene diamictites from ODP Site 739 in Prydz Bay with marine microfossils (diatoms and calcareous nannofossils) suggests the build-up of a major East Antarctic ice shield in latest Eocene to earliest Oligocene time, about 35-38 m.y. ago. Strontium isotopic analyses of small mollusk remains found within these diamictites, however, yield younger ages ranging from 29 to 23 Ma (i.e., latest early Oligocene to earliest Miocene). These age discrepancies could be caused by repeated glacial reworking of microfossils, macrofossils, and sediment clasts through the late Oligocene or, alternatively, by ion exchange in the still aragonitic mollusk shells.

Well-preserved late Miocene through Pleistocene age radiolarian assemblages were recovered during ODP Leg 111 at Site 677, on the southern flank of the Costa Rica Rift in the eastern equatorial Pacific. Radiolarian "event" biostratigraphy (first and last morphotypic appearances) was established for Holes 677A and 677B using 21 species yielding 24 reliable datum levels. The cold upwelling waters above this site have prevented many typical tropical Pacific stratigraphic radiolarians from being useful age indicators. Biostratigraphic datum levels were assigned absolute ages based on previous work and were used to date the cores. Sedimentation rates varied from 3.7 cm/1000 yr in the late Pleistocene to 6.0 cm/1000 yr in the late Miocene. The age of the oldest sediments at this site is estimated as 5.89-6.37 Ma, which indicates that Site 677 is between magnetic anomalies 3A and 4. A total of 67 taxa were assessed for stratigraphic relevance at this site and are listed in the Appendix. One previously unknown Pliocene radiolarian stratigraphic indicator, Botryostrobus euporus (Ehrenberg), is identified.
