The deployment of ultra-dense networks is one of the most promising solutions to manage the phenomenon of co-channel interference that affects the latest wireless communication systems, especially in hotspots. To meet the requirements of the use-cases and the immense amount of traffic generated in these scenarios, 5G ultra-dense networks are being deployed using various technologies, such as distributed antenna system (DAS) and cloud-radio access network (C-RAN). Through these centralized densification schemes, virtualized baseband processing units coordinate the distributed access points and manage the available network resources. In particular, link adaptation techniques are shown to be fundamental to overall system operation and performance enhancement. The core of this dissertation is the result of an analysis and a comparison of dynamic and adaptive methods for modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection applied to the latest mobile telecommunications standards. A novel algorithm based on the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller principles and block error rate (BLER) target has been proposed. Tests were conducted in a 4G and 5G system level laboratory and, by means of a channel emulator, the performance was evaluated for different channel models and target BLERs. Furthermore, due to the intrinsic sectorization of the end-users distribution in the investigated scenario, a preliminary analysis on the joint application of users grouping algorithms with multi-antenna and multi-user techniques has been performed. In conclusion, the importance and impact of other fundamental physical layer operations, such as channel estimation and power control, on the overall end-to-end system behavior and performance were highlighted.

The scope of this study is to identify the prevalence of access to information about how to prevent oral problems among schoolchildren in the public school network, as well as the factors associated with such access. This is a cross-sectional and analytical study conducted among 12-year-old schoolchildren in a Brazilian municipality with a large population. The examinations were performed by 24 trained dentists and calibrated with the aid of 24 recorders. Data collection occurred in 36 public schools selected from the 89 public schools of the city. Descriptive, univariate and multiple analyses were conducted. Of the 2510 schoolchildren included in the study, 2211 reported having received information about how to prevent oral problems. Access to such information was greater among those who used private dental services; and lower among those who used the service for treatment, who evaluated the service as regular or bad/awful. The latter use toothbrush only or toothbrush and tongue scrubbing as a means of oral hygiene and who reported not being satisfied with the appearance of their teeth. The conclusion drawn is that the majority of schoolchildren had access to information about how to prevent oral problems, though access was associated with the characteristics of health services, health behavior and outcomes.

Tämä diplomityö käsittelee sääntöpohjaisen verkkoon pääsyn hallinnan (NAC) ratkaisuja arkkitehtonisesta näkökulmasta. Työssä käydään läpi Trusted Computing Groupin, Microsoft Corporationin, Juniper Networksin sekä Cisco Systemsin NAC-ratkaisuja. NAC koostuu joukosta uusia sekä jo olemassa olevia teknologioita, jotka auttavat ennalta määriteltyyn sääntökantaan perustuen hallitsemaan suojattuun verkkoon pyrkivien laitteiden tietoliikenneyhteyksiä. Käyttäjän tunnistamisen lisäksi NAC pystyy rajoittamaan verkkoon pääsyä laitekohtaisten ominaisuuksien perusteella, esimerkiksi virustunnisteisiin ja käyttöjärjestelmäpäivityksiin liittyen ja paikkaamaan tietyin rajoituksin näissä esiintyviä puutteita verkkoon pääsyn sallimiseksi. NAC on verraten uusi käsite, jolta puuttuu tarkka määritelmä. Eräs keskeinen ongelma NAC-konseptissa on työaseman tietoverkolle toimittama mahdollisesti valheellinen tietoturvatarkistuksen tulos, minkä perusteella pääsyä osittain hallitaan. Muun muassa tähän ongelmaan ratkaisuna voisi olla jo nykytietokoneista löytyvä TPM-siru, mikä takaa tiedon oikeellisuuden ja koskemattomuuden.

The development of 3G (the 3rd generation telecommunication) value-added services brings higher requirements of Quality of Service (QoS). Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) is one of three 3G standards, and enhancement of QoS for WCDMA Core Network (CN) becomes more and more important for users and carriers. The dissertation focuses on enhancement of QoS for WCDMA CN. The purpose is to realize the DiffServ (Differentiated Services) model of QoS for WCDMA CN. Based on the parallelism characteristic of Network Processors (NPs), the NP programming model is classified as Pool of Threads (POTs) and Hyper Task Chaining (HTC). In this study, an integrated programming model that combines both of the two models was designed. This model has highly efficient and flexible features, and also solves the problems of sharing conflicts and packet ordering. We used this model as the programming model to realize DiffServ QoS for WCDMA CN. ^ The realization mechanism of the DiffServ model mainly consists of buffer management, packet scheduling and packet classification algorithms based on NPs. First, we proposed an adaptive buffer management algorithm called Packet Adaptive Fair Dropping (PAFD), which takes into consideration of both fairness and throughput, and has smooth service curves. Then, an improved packet scheduling algorithm called Priority-based Weighted Fair Queuing (PWFQ) was introduced to ensure the fairness of packet scheduling and reduce queue time of data packets. At the same time, the delay and jitter are also maintained in a small range. Thirdly, a multi-dimensional packet classification algorithm called Classification Based on Network Processors (CBNPs) was designed. It effectively reduces the memory access and storage space, and provides less time and space complexity. ^ Lastly, an integrated hardware and software system of the DiffServ model of QoS for WCDMA CN was proposed. It was implemented on the NP IXP2400. According to the corresponding experiment results, the proposed system significantly enhanced QoS for WCDMA CN. It extensively improves consistent response time, display distortion and sound image synchronization, and thus increases network efficiency and saves network resource.^

We measure quality of service (QoS) in a wireless network architecture of transoceanic aircraft. A distinguishing characteristic of the network scheme we analyze is that it mixes the concept of Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) through the exploitation of opportunistic contacts, together with direct satellite access in a limited number of the nodes. We provide a graph sparsification technique for deriving a network model that satisfies the key properties of a real aeronautical opportunistic network while enabling scalable simulation. This reduced model allows us to analyze the impact regarding QoS of introducing Internet-like traffic in the form of outgoing data from passengers. Promoting QoS in DTNs is usually really challenging due to their long delays and scarce resources. The availability of satellite communication links offers a chance to provide an improved degree of service regarding a pure opportunistic approach, and therefore it needs to be properly measured and quantified. Our analysis focuses on several QoS indicators such as delivery time, delivery ratio, and bandwidth allocation fairness. Obtained results show significant improvements in all metric indicators regarding QoS, not usually achievable on the field of DTNs.

Pervasive and distributed Internet of Things (IoT) devices demand ubiquitous coverage beyond No-man’s land. To satisfy plethora of IoT devices with resilient connectivity, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) will be pivotal to assist and complement terrestrial systems. In a massiveMTC scenario over NTN, characterized by sporadic uplink data reports, all the terminals within a satellite beam shall be served during the short visibility window of the flying platform, thus generating congestion due to simultaneous access attempts of IoT devices on the same radio resource. The more terminals collide, the more average-time it takes to complete an access which is due to the decreased number of successful attempts caused by Back-off commands of legacy methods. A possible countermeasure is represented by Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access scheme, which requires the knowledge of the number of superimposed NPRACH preambles. This work addresses this problem by proposing a Neural Network (NN) algorithm to cope with the uncoordinated random access performed by a prodigious number of Narrowband-IoT devices. Our proposed method classifies the number of colliding users, and for each estimates the Time of Arrival (ToA). The performance assessment, under Line of Sight (LoS) and Non-LoS conditions in sub-urban environments with two different satellite configurations, shows significant benefits of the proposed NN algorithm with respect to traditional methods for the ToA estimation.

The expression of peripheral tissue antigens (PTAs) in the thymus by medullary thymic epithelial cells (mTECs) is essential for the central self-tolerance in the generation of the T cell repertoire. Due to heterogeneity of autoantigen representation, this phenomenon has been termed promiscuous gene expression (PGE), in which the autoimmune regulator (Aire) gene plays a key role as a transcription factor in part of these genes. Here we used a microarray strategy to access PGE in cultured murine CD80(+) 3.10 mTEC line. Hierarchical clustering of the data allowed observation that PTA genes were differentially expressed being possible to found their respective induced or repressed mRNAs. To further investigate the control of PGE, we tested the hypothesis that genes involved in this phenomenon might also be modulated by transcriptional network. We then reconstructed such network based on the microarray expression data, featuring the guanylate cyclase 2d (Gucy2d) gene as a main node. In such condition, we established 167 positive and negative interactions with downstream PTA genes. Silencing Aire by RNA interference, Gucy2d while down regulated established a larger number (355) of interactions with PTA genes. T- and G-boxes corresponding to AIRE protein binding sites located upstream to ATG codon of Gucy2d supports this effect. These findings provide evidence that Aire plays a role in association with Gucy2d, which is connected to Several PTA genes and establishes a cascade-like transcriptional control of promiscuous gene expression in mTEC cells.
