Steady spatial self-organization of three-dimensional chemical reaction-diffusion systems is discussed with the emphasis put on the possible defects that may alter the Turing patterns. It is shown that one of the stable defects of a three-dimensional lamellar Turing structure is a twist grain boundary embedding a Scherk minimal surface.

Multi-layered materials have been made from Cu-Fe with approximately equal volume fractions using the Accumulated Roll Bonding (ARB) technique with less than 1 μm thickness of the individual layers. The so-obtained multi-layers have been subjected to deformation by cold rolling to 25, 50, 75, 87 and 93% reduction in thickness. A detailed characterization has been carried out using X-ray diffraction (line profile analysis and texture measurement) and electron (scanning and transmission) microscopy. It has been found that Fe layers are disintegrated whereas Cu retains its continuity within a layer. Microstructural Characterization from X-Ray Line profile Analysis (XRDLPA) through Variance Method reveals that large amount of strain is initially carried by Cu layers during deformation. In the Cu-Fe layer, the texture is comparatively weaker in Cu layer and strong in Fe layers. Brass Component increases up to 75% reduction and then decreases, while the ratio of Cu/S and Bs/S remains almost constant through out the deformation. After 50% reduction, dynamic recovery is predominant as indicated by the increase in the amount of low angle grain boundaries and decrease in dislocation density. The presence of R component indicates continuous dynamic recovery and recrystallization (CDRR) at the advanced stage of deformation.

Disks of a cast Al-7 % Si alloy were processed through high-pressure torsion (HPT) for 1/4, 1/2, 1, 5, and 10 revolutions under a pressure of 6.0 GPa and at temperatures of 298 and 445 K. The hardness of the samples after processing was significantly higher than in the cast sample, and the hardness profiles across the samples became more uniform with increasing numbers of turns. Processing at higher temperature gave lower hardness values. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of HPT processing on various microstructural aspects of the cast Al-7 % Si alloy such as the grain size, the Taylor factor, and the fraction of high-angle grain boundaries. The results demonstrate that there is a correlation between trends in the microhardness values and the observed microstructures.

Moly-TZM was deformed at constant strain rate of 1.0 s(-1) to investigate the high strain rate deformation behaviour by microstructural and stress response change within a temperature range of 1400-1700 degrees C. To correlate the deformation behaviour with orientational change, recrystallization and recovery of the material, the microstructural investigation was undertaken using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD). Depending on the grain size and orientation spread recrystallized grains were identified and texture was calculated. Change in grain boundary characteristics with increasing temperature was determined by the misorientation angle distribution for the deformed and recrystallized grains. Subgrain coalescence and increase in subgrain size with increasing temperature was observed, indicating recrystallization not only occurred from the nucleation of the dislocation free grains in grain boundaries but also from the subgrain rotation and merging of the subgrains by annihilation of the low angle grain boundaries. Detailed studies on the evolution of texture of recrystallized grains showed continuous increase in <001> fiber texture in recrystallised grains, in contrast to a mixed fiber <001> +<111> for the deformed grains.

Experiments were conducted on copper subjected to High Pressure Torsion to investigate the evolution of microstructure and microhardness with shear strain, gamma. Observations have been carried out in the longitudinal section for a proper demonstration of the structure morphology. An elongated dislocation cell/subgrain structure was observed at relatively low strain level. With increasing strain, the elongated subgrains transformed into elongated grains and finally into equiaxed grains with high angle grain boundaries. Measurements showed the hardness increases with increasing gamma then tends to saturations when gamma >5. The variation tendency of microhardness with gamma can be simulated by Voce-type equation.

The cyclic deformation behavior Of ultrafine-grained (UFG) Ni samples synthesized by the electrodeposition method was studied. Different from those made by severely plastic deformation, the UFG samples used in this study are characterized by large-angle grain boundaries. Behaviors from nanocrystalline Ni and coarse-grained Ni samples were compared with that Of Ultrafine-grained Ni. With in situ neutron diffraction. unusual evolutions of residual lattice strains as well as cyclic hardening and softening behavior were demonstrated during the cyclic deformation. The microstructural changes investigated by TEM are discussed with respect to the unusual lattice strain and cyclic hardening/softening. (C) 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Undoped Y2SiO5 single crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. The samples were optically polished after orienting and cutting. The rhombus and quadrangular dislocation etching pits, the low-angle grain boundaries and the inclusions in the samples were observed using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The absorption spectra were measured before and after H-2 annealing or air annealing. The absorption edge of Y2SiO5 crystal was determined to be about 202 nm. The absorption coefficient of Y2SiO5 crystal decreased after H-2 annealing and obviously increased after air annealing. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Vortex breaking has traditionally been studied for non-uniform critical current densities, although it may also appear due to non-uniform pinning force distributions. In this article we study the case of a high-pinning/low-pinning/high-pinning layered structure. We have developed an elastic model for describing the deformation of a vortex in these systems in the presence of a uniform transport current density J for any arbitrary orientation of the transport current and the magnetic field. If J is above a certain critical value, J(c), the vortex breaks and a finite effective resistance appears. Our model can be applied to some experimental configurations where vortex breaking naturally exists. This is the case for YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) low-angle grain boundaries and films on vicinal substrates, where the breaking is experienced by Abrikosov-Josephson vortices (AJV) and Josephson string vortices (SV), respectively. With our model, we have experimentally extracted some intrinsic parameters of the AJV and SV, such as the line tension is an element of(l) and compared it to existing predictions based on the vortex structure.

Weak epitaxy growth (WEG) behavior and mechanism of copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F16CuPc) on p-sexiphenyl (p-6P) monolayer film were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), selected area electron diffraction (SEAD), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). High-quality F16CuPc films with high order, large size, and molecular-level smoothness were obtained successfully by WEG method. It was identified that there exists incommensurate epitaxial relation between highly oriented F16CuPc and p-6P films. The geometrical channels of p-6P monolayer surface induce the nucleation and growth of F16CuPc molecules.

A 304 austenitic stainless steel was deformed using hot torsion to study the evolution of dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The initial nucleation of dynamically recrystallization occurred by the bulging of pre-existing high angle grain boundaries at a strain much lower than the peak strain. At the
peak stress, only a low fraction of the prior grain boundaries were covered with new DRX grains. Beyond the peak stress, new DRX grains formed layers near the initial DRX and a necklace structure was developed. Several different mechanisms appeared to be operative in the formation of new high angle boundaries and grains. The recrystallization behaviour after deformation showed a classic transition from strain dependent to strain independent softening. This occurred at a strain beyond the
peak, where the fraction of dynamic recrystallization was only 50%.

The microstructure evolution during hot deformation of a 23Cr-5Ni-3Mo duplex stainless steel was investigated in torsion. The presence of a soft δ ferrite phase in the vicinity of austenite caused strain partitioning, with accommodation of more strain in the δ ferrite. Furthermore, owing to the limited number of austenite/austenite grain boundaries, the kinetics of dynamic recrystallisation (DRX) in austenite was very slow. The first DRX grains in the austenite phase formed at a strain beyond the peak and proceeded to <15% of the microstructure at the rupture strain of the sample. On the other hand, the microstructure evolution in δ ferrite started by formation of low angle grain boundaries at low strains and the density of these boundaries increased with increasing strain. There was clear evidence of continuous dynamic recrystallisation in this phase at strains beyond the peak. However, in the δ ferrite phase at high strains, most grains consisted of δ/δ and δ/γ boundaries.

In the present paper an effect of severe plastic deformation (SPD) on the microstructural evolution and properties of a plain C-Mn steel was investigated. The SPD was accomplished by the MaxStrain system which deforms material along two perpendicular axes while the deformation along the third axis is fully constrained. The applied amounts of true strains were 5 and 20 in total. Deformation was conducted at room and 500°C temperatures. Some samples deformed at room temperature were subsequently annealed at 500°C. A microstructural analysis by SEM/EBSD was used for recognition the low- and high-angle grain boundaries. It was found that the collective effect of severe plastic deformation (true strain of 20) and further annealing promotes the formation of high-angle grain boundaries and uniform fine grained microstructure. The refinement of ferrite microstructure results in a significant increase in strength and hardness.

In the present study, multimodal nanostructured titanium was engineered using severe plastic deformation. The multimodal structured titanium exhibits an ultrahigh strength of over 940 MPa and a large failure elongation of 24%. The ultrahigh strength is mainly derived from the nanostructured structures; whilst the exceptional ductility originates from the large fraction of high angle grain boundaries, micro-scale structures, and the non-equilibrium grain boundary configuration. It is worth noting that apart from dislocation slip processes, the formation of deformation twins reduced the effective slip distance and increased the strain hardening capacity via the Hall-Petch mechanism, leading to high ductility of the multimodal structured titanium.

The microstructure evolution of martensitic Ti-6Al-4V alloy was investigated through uniaxial hot compression at 700°C and a strain rate of 10-3 s-1. A combination of scanning electron microscopy observation in conjunction with high resolution electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) was used to characterize the microstructure in detail. The development of the microstructure displayed continuous fragmentation of martensitic laths with increasing strain (i.e. continuous dynamic recrystallization), concurrently with decomposition of supersaturated martensite resulting in the formation of equiaxed grains. At a strain of 0.8, an ultrafine equiaxed grained structure with mostly high angle grain boundaries was successfully obtained. The current work proposes a novel approach to produce equiaxed ultrafine grains in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy through thermomechanical processing of a martensitic starting microstructure. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
