A theoretical model is proposed to determine the effects of Si substitution with Al on the oxygen diffusion in apatite-type lanthanum silicates based on density-functional theory (DFT) calculations for La10(SiO 4)4(AlO4)2O2. Substitution changes the stable configuration for excess oxygen from the split interstitial to a new cluster form with the original cluster. Al doping completely changes the migration mechanism from the interstitialcy one, which was proposed for the La9.33(SiO4)6O2 starting material, to a mechanism which contains an interstitial process. Nevertheless, the migration barrier is calculated to be 0.81 eV, which indicates small changes in oxygen conduction and is consistent with the observations. The present study indicates that the cation substitution on silicon site alone does not promise the improvement of the oxide ion conduction in the lanthanum silicate.

Using density functional theory, we investigated the position preference and diffusion mechanisms of interstitial oxygen ions in lanthanum silicate La9.33Si6O26, which is an apatite-structured oxide and a promising candidate electrolyte material for solid oxide fuel cells. The reported lanthanum vacancies were explicitly taken into account by theoretically determining their arrangement with a supercell model. The most stable structures and the formation energies of oxygen interstitials were determined for each charged state. It was found that the double-negatively charged state is stable over a wide range of the Fermi level, and that the excess oxygen ions form split interstitials with the original oxygen ions, while the neutral and the single-negatively charged states preferably form molecular oxygen. These species were found near the lanthanum vacancy site. The theoretically determined migration pathway along the c-axis essentially follows an interstitialcy mechanism. The obtained migration barrier is sensitive to the charge state, and is also affected by the lanthanum vacancy. The barrier height of the double-negatively charged state was calculated to be 0.58 eV for the model structure, which is consistent with the measured activation energy.

In this paper, the mechanical properties of bulk single-phase γ-Y2Si2O7 ceramic are reported. γ-Y2Si2O7 exhibits low shear modulus, excellent damage tolerance, and thus has a good machinability ready for metal working tools. To understand the underlying mechanism of machinability, drilling test, Hertzian contact test, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation are employed. Hertzian contact test demonstrates that γ-Y2Si2O7 is a "quasi-plastic" ceramic and the intrinsically weak interfaces contribute to its machinability. Crystal structure characteristics and DFT calculations of γ-Y2Si2O7 suggest that some weakly bonded planes, which involve Y-O bonds that can be easily broken, are the sources of the low shear deformation resistance and good machinability.

Likely spatial distributions of network-modifying (and mobile) cations in (oxide) glasses are discussed here. At very low modifier concentrations, the ions form dipoles with non-bridging oxygen centres while, at higher levels of modification, the cations tend to order as a result of Coulombic interactions. Activation energies for cation migration are calculated, assuming that the ions occupy (face-sharing) octahedral sites. It is found that conductivity activation energy decreases markedly with increasing modifier content, in agreement with experiment.

Several glass-ceramic compositions based on lithium silicates have been examined using thermal expansivity, X-ray diffraction, electrical conductivity, electron microscopy and solid state NMR studies. Role of P2O5 in nucleation and of Al2O3 in smoothening expansion behaviour have been particularly highlighted. Magic angle spinning NMR has been used to ascertain presence of Al in tetrahedral positions in the glassy phase

The Silicate Weathering Rate (SWR) and associated Carbon dioxide Consumption Rate (CCR) in tropical silicate terrain is assessed through a study of the major ion chemistry in a small west flowing river of Peninsular India, the Nethravati River. The specific features of the river basin are high mean annual rainfall and temperature, high runoff and a Precambrian basement composed of granitic-gneiss, charnockite and minor metasediments. The water samples (n = 56) were collected from three locations along the Nethravati River and from two of its tributaries over a period of twelve months. Chemical Weathering Rate (CWR) for the entire watershed is calculated by applying rainwater correction using river chloride as a tracer. Chemical Weathering Rate in the Nethravati watershed is estimated to 44 t.km(-2).y(-1) encompassing a SWR of 42 t.km(-2).y(-1) and a maximum carbonate contribution of 2 t.km(-2).y(-1). This SWR is among the highest reported for granito-gneissic terrains. The assessed CCR is 2.9 . 10(5) mol.km(-2).y(-1). The weathering index (Re). calculated from molecular ratios of dissolved cations and silica in the river, suggests an intense silicate weathering leading to kaolinite-gibbsite precipitation in the weathering covers. The intense SWR and CCR could be due to the combination of high runoff and temperature along with the thickness and nature of the weathering cover. The comparison of silicate weathering fluxes with other watersheds reveals that under similar morpho-climatic settings basalt weathering would be 2.5 times higher than the granite-gneissic rocks. The Neoarchean layered anorthositic complex at Sittampundi in southern India is known for its chromitite layers that are mostly associated with anorthosite (An(90-100)). The chromitites contain FeAl-rich chromites concentrated in layers between amphibole-rich layers with a dominant mineralogy of amphibole-spinel-plagiocase+/-sapphirine. The chromite-rich layers contain only amphibole and plagioclase. Mineral compositions illustrated by X-ray composition maps and profiles show subtle chemical differences. The chrome spinels are of refractory grade with Cr2O3 and Al2O3 contents varying between 34-40 wt.% and 23-28 wt.%. The chromite compositions are noticeably different from those in layered igneous intrusions of the Bushveld-Stillwater type. The existence of original highly calcic plagioclase, FeAl-rich chromite, and magmatic amphibole is consistent with derivation from a parental magma of hydrous tholeiitic composition that was most likely generated in a supra-subduction zone arc setting. In terms of mineralogy and field relations, the Sittampundi chromitites are remarkably similar to anorthosite-hosted chromitites in the Neoarchean Fiskensset anorthositic complex, Greenland. We propose that the Sittampundi chromitites formed by partial melting of unusually aluminous harzburgite in a hydrated mantle wedge above a subduction zone. This melting process produced hydrous, aluminous basalt, which fractionated at depth to give rise to a variety of high-alumina basalt compositions from which the anorthositic complex with its cumulate chromite-rich and amphibole-rich layers formed within the magma chamber of a supra-subduction zone arc. We report a direct correlation between dissimilar ion pair formation and alkali ion transport in soda-lime silicate glasses established via broad band conductivity spectroscopy and local structural probe techniques. The combined Raman and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy techniques on these glasses reveal the coexistence of different anionic species and the prevalence of Na+-Ca2+ dissimilar pairs as well as their distributions. The spectroscopic results further confirm the formation of dissimilar pairs atomistically, where it increases with increasing alkaline-earth oxide content These results, are the manifestation of local structural changes in the silicate network with composition which give rise to different environments into which the alkali ions hop. The Na+ ion mobility varies inversely with dissimilar pair formation, i.e. it decreases with increase of non-random formation of dissimilar pairs. Remarkably, we found that increased degree of non-randomness leads to temperature dependent variation in number density of sodium ions. Furthermore, the present study provides the strong link between the dynamics of the alkali ions and different sites associated with it in soda-lime silicate glasses. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. The speciation of water in a variety of hydrous silicate glasses, including simple and rhyolitic compositions, synthesized over a range of experimental conditions with up to 11 weight percent water has been determined using infrared spectroscopy. This technique has been calibrated with a series of standard glasses and provides a precise and accurate method for determining the concentrations of molecular water and hydroxyl groups in these glasses.
For all the compositions studied, most of the water is dissolved as hydroxyl groups at total water contents less than 3-4 weight percent; at higher total water contents, molecular water becomes the dominant species. For total water contents above 3-4 weight percent, the amount of water dissolved as hydroxyl groups is approximately constant at about 2 weight percent and additional water is incorporated as molecular water. Although there are small but measurable differences in the ratio of molecular water to hydroxyl groups at a given total water content among these silicate glasses, the speciation of water is similar over this range of composition. The trends in the concentrations of the H-bearing species in the hydrous glasses included in this study are similar to those observed in other silicate glasses using either infrared or NMR spectroscopy.
The effects of pressure and temperature on the speciation of water in albitic glasses have been investigated. The ratio of molecular water to hydroxyl groups at a given total water content is independent of the pressure and temperature of equilibration for albitic glasses synthesized in rapidly quenching piston cylinder apparatus at temperatures greater than 1000°C and pressures greater than 8 kbar. For hydrous glasses quenched from melts cooled at slower rates (i.e., in internally heated or in air-quench cold seal pressure vessels), there is an increase in the ratio of molecular water to hydroxyl group content that probably reflects reequilibration of the melt to lower temperatures during slow cooling.
Molecular water and hydroxyl group concentrations in glasses provide information on the dissolution mechanisms of water in silicate liquids. Several mixing models involving homogeneous equilibria of the form H_2O + O = 20H among melt species have been explored for albitic melts. These models can account for the measured species concentrations if the effects of non-ideal behavior or mixing of polymerized units are included, or by allowing for the presence of several different types of anhydrous species.
A thermodynamic model for hydrous albitic melts has been developed based on the assumption that the activity of water in the melt is equal to the mole fraction of molecular water determined by infrared spectroscopy. This model can account for the position of the watersaturated solidus of crystalline albite, the pressure and temperature dependence of the solubility of water in albitic melt, and the volumes of hydrous albitic melts. To the extent that it is successful, this approach provides a direct link between measured species concentrations in hydrous albitic glasses and the macroscopic thermodynamic properties of the albite-water system.
The approach taken in modelling the thermodynamics of hydrous albitic melts has been generalized to other silicate compositions. Spectroscopic measurements of species concentrations in rhyolitic and simple silicate glasses quenched from melts equilibrated with water vapor provide important constraints on the thermodynamic properties of these melt-water systems. In particular, the assumption that the activity of water is equal to the mole fraction of molecular water has been tested in detail and shown to be a valid approximation for a range of hydrous silicate melts and the partial molar volume of water in these systems has been constrained. Thus, the results of this study provide a useful thermodynamic description of hydrous melts that can be readily applied to other melt-water systems for which spectroscopic measurements of the H-bearing species are available.
Liquid silicate equation of state : using shock waves to understand the properties of the deep Earth
Resumo:
The equations of state (EOS) of several geologically important silicate liquids have been constrained via preheated shock wave techniques. Results on molten Fe2SiO4 (fayalite), Mg2SiO4 (forsterite), CaFeSi2O6 (hedenbergite), an equimolar mixture of CaAl2Si2O8-CaFeSi2O6 (anorthite-hedenbergite), and an equimolar mixture of CaAl2Si2O8-CaFeSi2O6-CaMgSi2O6(anorthite-hedenbergite-diopside) are presented. This work represents the first ever direct EOS measurements of an iron-bearing liquid or of a forsterite liquid at pressures relevant to the deep Earth (> 135 GPa). Additionally, revised EOS for molten CaMgSi2O6 (diopside), CaAl2Si2O8 (anorthite), and MgSiO3 (enstatite), which were previously determined by shock wave methods, are also presented.
The liquid EOS are incorporated into a model, which employs linear mixing of volumes to determine the density of compositionally intermediate liquids in the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-FeO major element space. Liquid volumes are calculated for temperature and pressure conditions that are currently present at the core-mantle boundary or that may have occurred during differentiation of a fully molten mantle magma ocean.
The most significant implications of our results include: (1) a magma ocean of either chondrite or peridotite composition is less dense than its first crystallizing solid, which is not conducive to the formation of a basal mantle magma ocean, (2) the ambient mantle cannot produce a partial melt and an equilibrium residue sufficiently dense to form an ultralow velocity zone mush, and (3) due to the compositional dependence of Fe

We investigated the effect of cerium oxide on the precipitation of Ag nanoparticles in silicate glass via a femtosecond laser irradiation and successive annealing. Absorption spectra show that Ce3+ ions may absorb part of the laser energy via multiphoton absorption and release free electrons, resulting in an increase of the concentration of Ag atoms and a decrease of the concentration of hole-trapped color centers, which influence precipitation of the Ag nanoparticles. In addition, we found that the formed Ag-0 may reduce Ce4+ ions to Ce3+ ions during the annealing process, which inhibits the growth of the Ag nanoparticles.

Infrared (IR) luminescence covering 1.1 to similar to 1.6 mu m wavelength region was observed from bismuth-doped barium silicate glasses, excited by a laser diode at 808 nm wavelength region, at room temperature. The peak of the IR luminescence appears at 1325 nm. A full width half-maximum (FWHM) and the lifetime of the fluorescence is more than 200 nm and 400 mu s, respectively. The fluorescence intensity increases with Al2O3 content, but decreases with BaO content. We suggest that the IR luminescence should be ascribed to the low valence state of bismuth Bi2+ or Bi+, and Al3+ ions play an indirect dispersing role for the infrared luminescent centers.

Broadband near-infrared (IR) luminescence in transparent alkali gallium silicate glass-ceramics containing N2+-doped beta-Ga2O3 nanocrystals was observed. This broadband emission could be attributed to the T-3(2g) (F-3) -> (3)A(2g) (F-3) transition of octahedral Ni2+ ions in glass-ceramics. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the near-IR luminescence and fluorescent lifetime of the glass-ceramic doped with 0.10 mol% NiO were 260 nm and similar to 1220 mu s, respectively. It is expected that transparent Ni2+-doped beta-Ga2O3 glass-ceramics with this broad near-IR emission and long fluorescent lifetime have potential applications as super-broadband optical amplification media.
