The characteristics and dispersion of the distinct surface acoustic waves (SAWs) propagating in ZnO/GaAs heterostructures have been studied experimentally and theoretically. Besides the Rayleigh mode, strong Sezawa modes, which propagate confined in the overlayer, arise due to the smaller sound velocity in ZnO than in the substrate. The design parameters of the structure providing the strongest piezoelectric field at a given depth within the layered system for the different modes have been determined. The piezoelectric field of the Rayleigh mode is shown to be more than 10 times stronger at the interface region of the tailored ZnO/GaAs structure than at the surface region of the bulk GaAs, whereas the same comparison for the first Sezawa mode yields a factor of 2. This enhancement, together with the capacity of selecting waves with different piezoelectric and strain field depth profiles, will facilitate the development of SAW-modulated optoelectronic applications in GaAs-based systems. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Thin film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) devices supporting simultaneously multiple resonance modes have been designed for gravimetric sensing. The mechanism for dual-mode generation within a single device has been discussed, and theoretical calculations based on finite element analysis allowed the fabrication of FBARs whose resonance modes have opposite reactions to temperature changes; one of the modes exhibiting a positive frequency shift for a rise of temperature whilst the other mode exhibits a negative shift. Both modes exhibit negative frequency shift for a mass load and hence by monitoring simultaneously both modes it is possible to distinguish whether a change in the resonance frequency is due to a mass load or temperature variation (or a combination of both), avoiding false positive/negative responses in gravimetric sensing without the need of additional reference devices or complex electronics.

A novel film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) with two resonant frequencies which have opposite reactions to temperature changes has been designed. The two resonant modes respond differently to changes in temperature and pressure, with the frequency shift being linearly correlated with temperature and pressure changes. By utilizing the FBAR's sealed back trench as a cavity, an on-chip single FBAR sensor suitable for measuring pressure and temperature simultaneously is proposed and demonstrated. The experimental results show that the pressure coefficient of frequency for the lower frequency peak of the FBAR sensors is approximately -17.4 ppm kPa-1, while that for the second peak is approximately -6.1 ppm kPa-1, both of them being much more sensitive than other existing pressure sensors. This dual mode on-chip pressure sensor is simple in structure and operation, can be fabricated at very low cost, and yet requires no specific package, therefore has great potential for applications. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Active vibration control of a submerged hull is presented. A submarine hull can be idealised as a ring stiffened finite cylinder with applied fluid loading. At low frequencies, rotation of the propeller results in discrete tones at the blade passing frequency and its harmonics. The low frequency axial and radial vibration modes of the submerged body can result in a high level of radiated noise. Global hull modes are difficult to attenuate since passive control techniques such as damping materials are not practical due to size and weight constraints. This work investigates active vibration control of a submarine hull for attenuation of the structural and acoustic responses. Based on a feedforward algorithm at tonal frequencies, active vibration suppression of the axial and radial hull displacements are investigated. The effect of the various control arrangements on the structure-borne radiated noise is examined. Numerical simulations of the control performance are presented.

Low attenuation of Sezawa modes operating at GHz frequencies in ZnO/GaAs systems immersed in liquid helium has been observed. This unexpected behaviour for Rayleigh-like surface acoustic waves (SAWs) is explained in terms of the calculated depth profiles of their acoustic Poynting vectors. This analysis allows reproduction of the experimental dispersion of the attenuation coefficient. In addition, the high attenuation of the Rayleigh mode is compensated by the strengthening provided by the ZnO layer. The introduction of the ZnO film will enable the operation of SAW-driven single-photon sources in GaAs-based systems with the best thermal stability provided by the liquid helium bath. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

An accurate description of sound propagation in a duct is important to obtain the sound power radiating from a source in both near and far fields. A technique has been developed and applied to decompose higher-order modes of sound emitted into a duct. Traditional experiments and theory based on two-sensor methods are limited to the plane-wave contribution to the sound field at low frequency. Due to the increase in independent measurements required, a computational method has been developed to simulate sensitivities of real measurements (e.g., noise) and optimize the set-up. An experimental rig has been constructed to decompose the first two modes using six independent measurements from surface, flush-mounted microphones. Experiments were initially performed using a loudspeaker as the source for validation. Subsequently, the sound emitted by a mixed-flow fan has been investigated and compared to measurements made in accordance with the internationally standardized in-duct fan measurement method. This method utilizes large anechoic terminations and a procedure involving averaging over measurements in space and time to account for the contribution from higher-order modes. The new method does not require either of these added complications and gives detail about the underlying modal content of the emitted sound.

We consider the propagation of acoustic waves along a cylindrical duct carrying radially sheared axial mean flow, in which the duct radius is allowed to vary slowly along the axis. In previous work [A.J. Cooper & N. Peake, Journal of Fluid Mechanics 445 (2001) 207-234.] radially sheared axial mean flow with nonzero swirl in a slowly varying duct was considered, but in this paper we set the swirl to zero, thereby allowing simplification of the calculations of both the mean and unsteady flows. In this approach the acoustic wavenumber and corresponding eigenfunction are determined locally, while the wave amplitude is found by solving an evolution equation along the duct. Sample results are presented, including a case in which, perhaps surprisingly, the number of cut-on modes increases as the duct radius decreases. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present study aims at accounting for swirling mean flow effects on rotor trailing-edge noise. Indeed, the mean flow in between the rotor and the stator of the fan or of a compressor stage is highly swirling. The extension of Ffowcs-Williams & Hawkings' acoustic analogy in a medium at rest with moving surfaces and of Goldstein's acoustic analogy in a circular duct with uniform mean flow to a swirling mean flow in an annular duct is introduced. It is first applied to tonal noise. In most cases, the swirl modifies the pressure distribution downstream of the fan. In several configurations, when the swirl is rather close to a solid body swirl, it is often sufficient to apply a simple Doppler effect correction when predicting the duct modes in uniform mean flow in order to predict accurately the noise radiated with swirl. However, in other realistic configurations, the swirling mean-flow effect cannot be addressed using this simple Doppler effect correction. Second, a rotor trailing-edge noise model accounting for both the effects of the annular duct and the swirling mean flow is developed and applied to a realistic fan rotor with different swirling and sheared mean flows (and as a result different associated blade stagger angles). The benchmark cases are built from the Boeing 18-inch Fan Rig Broadband Noise Test. In all cases the swirling mean flow has an effect. In some cases the a simple Doppler effect may address it, but, in other realistic configurations our acoustic analogy with swirl is needed. © 2012 by the authors. High frequency Rayleigh and Sezawa modes propagating in the ZnO/GaAs system capable of operating immersed in liquid helium have been engineered. In the case of the Rayleigh mode, the strong attenuation produced by the liquid is counteracted by the strengthening of the mode induced by the ZnO. However, in the case of the Sezawa modes, the attenuation is strongly reduced taking advantage of the depth profile of their acoustic Poynting vectors, that extend deeper into the layered system, reducing the energy radiated into the fluid. Thus, both tailored modes will be suitable for acoustically-driven single-electron and single-photon devices in ZnO-coated GaAs-based systems with the best thermal stability provided by the liquid helium bath. © 2012 IEEE.

An optimization process has been used to design an ultra-low count fan outlet guide vane with an unconventional leading edge profile to reduce the interaction noise. Computational fluid dynamics has been used to predict the aerodynamic and acoustic performance of the stator vane. The final stator design has been built and tested in a representative fan stage rig to determine its tone noise characteristics. The stator vane is found to give significant tone noise reduction at the fundamental blade passing frequency at cut-back in line with design expectations. Detailed comparisons of predicted circumferential and radial modes levels against measured mode detection data are also presented. A good agreement was found between numerical predictions and experimental data.

This theoretical study investigates spinning and standing modes in azimuthally symmetric annular combustion chambers. Both modes are observed in experiments and simulations, and an existing model predicts that spinning modes are the only stable state of the system. We extend this model to take into account the effect that the acoustic azimuthal velocity, u, has on the flames, and propose a phenomenological model based on experiments performed on transversely forced flames. This model contains a parameter, ä, that quantifies the influence that the transversal excitation has on the fluctuating heat release. For small values of ä, spinning modes are the only stable state of the system. In an intermediate range of ä, both spinning and standing modes are stable states. For large values of ä, standing modes are the only stable state. This study shows that a flame's response to azimuthal velocity fluctuations plays an important role in determining the type of thermoacoustic oscillations found in annular combustors. © 2013 The Authors.

Self-assembled Si/Ge dot multilayers with small, uncorrelated dots fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy in the Stranski-Krastanov growth mode are studied by Raman scattering of folded longitudinal acoustic (FLA) modes. The FLA Raman spectra are analyzed and modeled with respect to mode frequencies and the spectral envelope of mode intensities. The deduced average superlattice properties are consistent with results from atomic force microscopy. The simple Rytov model used for Si/Ge layer structures reproduces very well the frequencies of the FLA modes up to 150 cm(-1). The nonlinearity of phonon dispersion curves in bulk Si for large momenta, however, becomes important for modeling the higher frequencies of observed FLA modes up to 22nd order. The effective dot layer width and an activation energy for thermal intermixing of 2.1+/-0.2 eV are determined from the spectral envelopes of FLA mode intensities of as-grown and annealed Si/Ge dot multilayers. Four pigs, three with focal infarctions in the apical intraventricular septum (IVS) and/or left ventricular free wall (LVFW), were imaged with an intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) transducer. Custom beam sequences were used to excite the myocardium with focused acoustic radiation force (ARF) impulses and image the subsequent tissue response. Tissue displacement in response to the ARF excitation was calculated with a phase-based estimator, and transverse wave magnitude and velocity were each estimated at every depth. The excitation sequence was repeated rapidly, either in the same location to generate 40 Hz M-modes at a single steering angle, or with a modulated steering angle to synthesize 2-D displacement magnitude and shear wave velocity images at 17 points in the cardiac cycle. Both types of images were acquired from various views in the right and left ventricles, in and out of infarcted regions. In all animals, acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) and shear wave elasticity imaging (SWEI) estimates indicated diastolic relaxation and systolic contraction in noninfarcted tissues. The M-mode sequences showed high beat-to-beat spatio-temporal repeatability of the measurements for each imaging plane. In views of noninfarcted tissue in the diseased animals, no significant elastic remodeling was indicated when compared with the control. Where available, views of infarcted tissue were compared with similar views from the control animal. In views of the LVFW, the infarcted tissue presented as stiff and non-contractile compared with the control. In a view of the IVS, no significant difference was seen between infarcted and healthy tissue, whereas in another view, a heterogeneous infarction was seen to be presenting itself as non-contractile in systole.

A pair plasma consisting of two types of ions, possessing equal masses and opposite charges, is considered. The nonlinear propagation of modulated electrostatic wave packets is studied by employing a two-fluid plasma model. Considering propagation parallel to the external magnetic field, two distinct electrostatic modes are obtained, namely a quasiacoustic lower moddfe and a Langmuir-like, as optic-type upper one, in agreement with experimental observations and theoretical predictions. Considering small yet weakly nonlinear deviations from equilibrium, and adopting a multiple-scale technique, the basic set of model equations is reduced to a nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the slowly varying electric field perturbation amplitude. The analysis reveals that the lower (acoustic) mode is stable and may propagate in the form of a dark-type envelope soliton (a void) modulating a carrier wave packet, while the upper linear mode is intrinsically unstable, and may favor the formation of bright-type envelope soliton (pulse) modulated wave packets. These results are relevant to recent observations of electrostatic waves in pair-ion (fullerene) plasmas, and also with respect to electron-positron plasma emission in pulsar magnetospheres.
