Stable monolayer of the polyaniline doped with camphor sulfonic acid at the air-water interface has been obtained, of which multilayers have been successfully deposited by Langmuir-Blodgett technique onto CaF2 substrate. The limiting mean molecular area and collapse pressure are found to be 0.294 nm(2) and 41 mN/m, respectively. The multilayers were characterized by IR and W-Vis-NIR spectroscopies. X-ray small-angle diffraction data show that the multilayer was periodic layer structure with the layer spacing of 1.60 nm. The comparisons are also made with characterization of the casting film. A process for in situ synthesis of terbium complex with salicylic acid by a two-step sol-gel method in silica matrix has been proposed. The luminescence properties of the silica gels codoped with terbium and salicylic acid have also been discussed with respect to that of the gel doped with terbium and that of pure terbium complex with salicylic acid.

Ternary complexes of europium and terbium with paraaminobenzoic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline (Eu(p-ABA)(3). phen . 2H(2)O and Tb(p-ABA)(3). phen . 2H(2)O, where p-HABA = paraaminobenzoic acid and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were introduced into a silica matrix by sol-gel method. The luminescence behavior of the complexes in silica gels was studied in comparison with the. corresponding solid-state complexes by means of emission, excitation spectra, and Lifetimes. Within the range of effective dopant concentrations, the luminescence intensities of rare-earth complexes in silica gel increase with the increasing of their dopant concentration. The lifetimes of rare-earth ions (Eu3+ and-Tb3+) in silica gel doped with europium and terbium complexes become longer than those in pure complexes. Very small amounts of rare-earth complexes doped in silica gel matrix can exhibit excellent luminescence properties, (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The luminescence properties of silica gels and silica gels doped with two rare earth complexes, Eu(TTA)(3) and Tb(o-CBA)(3) (TTA=thenoyltriffuocetate, o-CBA=o-chlorobenzoic acid) are reported and discussed. Pure silica gels show a blue luminescence, and the maximum excitation and emission wavelengths depend strongly on the solvents used. Both of the studied rare earth complexes exhibit the characteristic emissions of the rare earth ions in silica gels, i.e., Eu3+5D0-->F-7(J)(J=0,1,2,3,4), Tb3+5D4-->F-7(J)(J=3,4,5,6) transitions. Compared with the pure RE-complexes powder, the silica gels doped with RE-complexes show fewer emission lines of the rare earth ions. Furthermore the rare earth ion (Tb3+) presents a longer lifetime (1346 mu s) in silica gel doped with Tb(o-CBA)3 than in pure Tb((o-CBA)(3) powder (744 mu s). The reasons responsible for these results are discussed in the context.

Solution properties of polyaniline (PAn) doped by camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) were examined. PAn-CSA behaves like a polyelectrolyte to different extents depending on the solvent used. In an m-cresol/chloroform solution, PAn-CSA exhibits an expanded chain conformation because of its polyelectrolytic properties. Dilute and concentrated solution properties of PAn-CSA indicate that PAn-CSA is a semirigid polymer which has strong interchain interactions.

The isopolymolybdic anion-polyaniline film modified carbon fiber (CF) microelectrode with high stability and electroactivity in aqueous acid solution has been successfully prepared by cycling the potential between -0.15 V and +0.85 V vs. sce at 100 mV s-1 or applying constant potential (+0.85 V) for electropolymerization in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution containing 5.0 x 10(-2) M aniline and 5.0 x 10(-3) M H4Mo8O26. The electrochemical behaviour of the isopolymolybdic anion entrapped in the polyaniline film is strongly influenced by the sweep-potential range besides the acidity of electrolyte solution. In some acidic electrolyte solution (eg 0.5 M H2SO4), the change of the sweep-potential range causes the structure alternation of the isopolymolybdic anion and resulting in a new electrode process. The cyclic voltammogram of Mo8O264- in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution exhibits three two-electron reversible waves between +0.70 and -0.20 V. However, when the potential sweeps to the lower-limit of -0.3 V, where the fourth four-electron cathodic wave appears, the redoxidation process of the reduction product of Mo8O264- becomes relatively complicated. The 10-electron reduction product seems to change into other isopolyanion (this unknown structure isopolyanions are simply called [Mo-O]), which can be reoxidized to Mo8O264- by five successive two-electron oxidation steps from -0.30 to +0.70 V. However, when the lower-limit of the cycling potential is maintained at -0.30 V and the upper-limit reduces to +0.40 V from +0.70 V, the [Mo-O] in the film exhibits four two-electron reversible waves. We have presented a novel explanation about its electrode reaction mechanism on the basis of our experimental results.

The chain structure of polyaniline doped with HCl or CF_3COOH has been investigated by FTIR, solid state ~(13)CNMR, resonance laser Raman and UV-VIS spectroscopies. The results show that during the protonic acid doping, a partial redox reaction takes place between the quinone-diimine and benzene-diamine units and it leads to a long conjugate system with a certain charge distribution.

Zirconium-doped perovskite-type membrane materials of BaCo0.4Fe0.6-xZrxO3-delta (x = 0-0.4) with mixed oxygen ion and electron conductivity were synthesized through a method of combining citric and EDTA acid complexes. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O-2-TPD) and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) showed that the incorporation of proper amount of zirconium into BaCo0.4Fe0.6O3-delta could stabilize the ideal and cubic structure of perovskite. Studies on the oxygen permeability of the as-synthesized membrane disks under air/He gradient indicated that the content of zirconium in these materials had great effects on oxygen permeation flux, activation energy for oxygen permeation and operation stability. The high oxygen permeation flux of 0.90 ml cm(-2) min(-1) at 950degreesC, the single activation energy for oxygen permeation in the range of 600-950 degreesC and the long-term operation stability at a relatively lower operational temperature of 800 degreesC under air/He gradient were achieved for the BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.2O3-delta material. Meanwhile, the effect of carbon dioxide on structural stability and oxygen permeability of this material was also studied in detail, which revealed that the reversible stability could be attained for it. The research work in this thesis included the sensitive and selective separation of biological substance by capillary electrophoresis with a boron doped diamond electrode for amperometric detection. Chapter 1 introduced the capillary electrophoresis and electrochemical detection. It included the different modes of capillary electrophoresis, polyelectrolyte multilayers coating for open tubular capillary electrochromatography, different modes of electrochemical detection and carbon based electrodes. Chapter 2 showed the synthesized and electropolymerized N-acetyltyramine with a negatively charged sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin on a boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode followed by the electropolymerzation of pyrrole to form a stable and permselective film for selective dopamine detection. For comparison, a glassy carbon (GC) electrode with a combined electropolymerized permselective film of polytyramine and polypyrrole-1-propionic acid was used for selective detection of dopamine. The detection limit of dopamine was improved from 100 nM at a GC electrode to 5 nM at a BDD electrode. Chapter 3 showed field-amplified sample stacking using a fused silica capillary coated with gold nanoparticles embedded in poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride, which has been investigated for the electrophoretic separation of indoxyl sulphate, homovanillic acid and vanillylmandelic acid. The detection limit of the three analytes obtained by using a boron doped diamond electrode was around 75 nM, which was significantly below their normal physiological levels in biological fluids. This combined separation and detection scheme was applied to the direct analysis of these analytes and other interfereing chemicals including uric and ascorbic acids in urine samples without off-line sample treatment or preconcentration. Chapter 4 showed the selective detection of Pseudomonas Quinolone Signal, PQS for quorum sensing from its precursor HHQ, using a simply boron doped diamond electrode. Furthermore, by combining poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride modified fused silica capillary with a BDD electrode for amperometric detection, PQS was separated from HHQ and other analogues. The detection limit of PQS was as low as 65 nM. Different P. aeruginosa mutant strains were studied. Chapter 5 showed the separation of aminothiols by layer-by-layer coating of silica capillary with a boron doped diamond electrode. The capillary was layer-by-layer coated with the polycation poly(diallyldimethylammonium) chloride and negatively charged silica nanoparticles. All the aminothiols was separated and detected using a BDD electrode in an acidic electrolyte. It was a novel scheme for the separation and detection of glutathione reduced and oxidized forms, which is important for estimated overstressed level in the human system.

Acidification of an isopropanol solution containing mixtures of [Ti(OPri)(4)] and [W(OEt)(5)] produced solutions from which various TiO2, WO3 and TiO2/WO3 thin films could be obtained by dip coating and annealing. The films were analysed by X-ray diffraction, SEM/EDAX, Raman, electronic spectra, contact angle and photoactivity with respect to destruction of an over layer of stearic acid. The TiO2/WO3 films were shown to be mixtures of two phases TiO2 and WO3 rather than a solid solution TixWyO2. The 2% tungsten oxide doped titania films were shown to be the most effective photocatalysts. All of the TiO2 and TiO2/WO3 films showed light induced superhydrophillicity. A bi-enzymatic biosensor (LACC–TYR–AuNPs–CS/GPE) for carbamates was prepared in a single step by electrodeposition of a hybrid film onto a graphene doped carbon paste electrode (GPE). Graphene and the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were morphologically characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and laser Doppler velocimetry. The electrodeposited hybrid film was composed of laccase (LACC), tyrosinase (TYR) and AuNPs entrapped in a chitosan (CS) polymeric matrix. Experimental parameters, namely graphene redox state, AuNPs:CS ratio, enzymes concentration, pH and inhibition time were evaluated. LACC–TYR–AuNPs–CS/GPE exhibited an improved Michaelis–Menten kinetic constant (26.9 ± 0.5 M) when compared with LACC–AuNPs–CS/GPE (37.8 ± 0.2 M) and TYR–AuNPs–CS/GPE (52.3 ± 0.4 M). Using 4-aminophenol as substrate at pH 5.5, the device presented wide linear ranges, low detection limits (1.68×10− 9 ± 1.18×10− 10 – 2.15×10− 7 ± 3.41×10− 9 M), high accuracy, sensitivity (1.13×106 ± 8.11×104 – 2.19×108 ± 2.51×107 %inhibition M− 1), repeatability (1.2–5.8% RSD), reproducibility (3.2–6.5% RSD) and stability (ca. twenty days) to determine carbaryl, formetanate hydrochloride, propoxur and ziram in citrus fruits based on their inhibitory capacity on the polyphenoloxidases activity. Recoveries at two fortified levels ranged from 93.8 ± 0.3% (lemon) to 97.8 ± 0.3% (orange). Glucose, citric acid and ascorbic acid do not interfere significantly in the electroanalysis. The proposed electroanalytical procedure can be a promising tool for food safety control.
