The purpose of this project was to determine the optimal hole pattern needed for undersealing work, and also to determine if it is feasible to underseal a roadway with existing longitudinal subdrains without plugging the subdrain system. At the test site the hole pattern had little effect on the grout distribution. It was found that the hole pattern, to be effective, must locate existing voids and that holes must extend at least 2 in. (5 cm) below the underside of the pavement. It appeared that pavements can be undersealed without significant damage to the existing subdrains, but special care is needed to assure that excess grout is not injected into the drainage system. Recommendations are made concerning the hole pattern, grout efflux time, and procedures for minimizing the risk of plugging the subdrains with grout.

Este experimento foi conduzido na Embrapa-Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Gado de Leite, situada em Coronel Pacheco, MG, de outubro de 1995 a outubro de 1997, para avaliar o efeito de cinco doses de nitrogênio (zero, 100, 200, 400 e 600 kg/ha/ano) e três intervalos de cortes (2, 4 e 6 semanas, nas chuvas, e 4, 6 e 8 semanas, na seca) na produção de matéria seca e teor de proteína bruta do capim tifton 85. O delineamento experimental adotado foi em blocos ao acaso, em parcelas divididas e três repetições. Nas parcelas foram alocados os intervalos de cortes, e nas subparcelas, as doses de nitrogênio. A produção anual de matéria seca do tifton 85 cresceu com a dose de nitrogênio até a aplicação de 600 kg/ha/ano, e até o intervalo de cortes de quatro semanas, nas chuvas, e seis semanas, na seca. A maior produção de matéria seca foi de 23,1 t/ha/ano, com 17,8 t/ha obtidas na época das chuvas. A menor produção foi de 2,6 t/ha/ano, sendo 1,9 t/ha alcançada nas chuvas. O teor de proteína bruta aumentou com a elevação da dose de nitrogênio até 600 kg/ha/ano, tanto nas chuvas quanto na seca, e com a redução do intervalo de cortes, na seca. Nas chuvas, não houve efeito do intervalo de cortes sobre o teor de proteína bruta. O teor máximo de proteína bruta obtido foi de 21,7%. A persistência do tifton 85 foi comprometida pela ausência da adubação nitrogenada e pelo menor intervalo de cortes.

The Troxler 3241-B Asphalt Content Gauge is intended for rapidly determining the bitumen content of bituminous paving mixtures. A 300 Millicurie Americuium 241: Beryllium source emitts neutrons which are affected by the hydrogen in the mix. The affected neutrons are detected by Helium 3 detectors, counted and computed into a percentage bitumen of the asphalt mix. The current methods of determining the bitumen content of bituminous paving mixtures requires the use of potentially hazardous chemicals and several hours of testing time. When extracted aggregates are not needed, determination of the bitumen content of a paving mixture by the nuclear method may be easier, quicker and potentially safer. The objective of the project is to study the accuracy of the Troxler 3241-B Nuclear Asphalt Content Gauge in measuring the asphalt cement (AC) content of asphalt concrete mixtures produced with different asphalt cements and different aggregates.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of the tiller size/density compensation mechanism in Tifton 85 bermudagrass swards grazed by sheep under continuous stocking. Treatments corresponded to four sward steady state conditions (5, 10, 15, and 20 cm of sward surface height), maintained by sheep grazing. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with four replicates. Pasture responses evaluated include: tiller population density, tiller mass, leaf mass and leaf area per tiller, and herbage mass. Tiller volume, leaf area index, tiller leaf/stem ratio, and tiller leaf area/volume ratio were calculated and simple regression analyses between tiller population density and tiller mass were performed. Measurements were made in December, 1998, and January, April, and July, 1999. The swards showed a tiller size/density compensation mechanism in which high tiller population densities were associated with small tillers and vice-versa, except in July, 1999. Regression analyses revealed that linear coefficients were steeper than the theoretical expectation of -3/2. Increments in herbage mass were attributable to increases in tiller mass in December and January. Leaf area/volume ratio values of Tifton 85 tillers were much lower than those commonly found for temperate grass species.

The report describes the state of the art video equipment used and experiences gained from the 6,800 mile field test. The first objective of this project was to determine if laser disc equipment could capture and store usable roadway images while operating in a mobile environment. The second objective was to evaluate methods of using optical disc storage and retrieval features to enhance highway planning and design function. Several highway departments have attempted to use video technology to replace the traditional 16 and 35 mm film format used in photologging. These attempts have met with limited success because of the distortion caused by video technology not being capable of dealing with highway speeds. The distortion has caused many highway signs to be unreadable and, therefore, clients have labeled the technology unusable. Two methods of using optical laser disc storage and retrieval have been successfully demonstrated by Wisconsin and Connecticut Departments of Transportation. Each method provides instantaneous retrieval and linking of images with other information. However, both methods gather the images using 35 mm film techniques. The 35 mm film image is then transferred to laser disc. Eliminating the film conversion to laser disc has potential for saving $4 to $5 per logging mile. In addition to a cost savings, the image would be available immediately as opposed to delays caused by film developing and transferring to laser disc. In June and November of 1986 Iowa DOT staff and cooperating equipment suppliers demonstrated the concept of direct image capture. The results from these tests were promising and an FHWA Demonstration program established. Since 1986 technology advancements have been incorporated into the design that further improve the image quality originally demonstrated.

This study investigates the properties imparted to extruded asphalt curb mixes by five different additives. The AC used in these mixes was also tested with various amounts of the additives. All of the additives stiffened the AC as indicated by a reduction of penetration and increased viscosity. Only the powdered asphalts, gilsonite and Witcurb improved the Marshall stability and the indirect tensil strength enough to justify their use in curb mixes.

Three comparable hot mixed asphalt paving mixes were produced using two different aggregates produced from reclaimed portland cement concrete paving and one from a crushed limestone aggregate. These were subjected both dry and soaked to indirect tensile tests to determine the wet strength retention. One mix made from reclaimed concrete demonstrated a slightly better strength retention than the limestone mix and the other less. Satisfactory asphalt paving mixes can be produced from reclaimed concrete pavements but the increased asphalt demand (about 1%) negates part of the potential savings.

Portland cement concrete is an outstanding structural material but stresses and cracks often occur in large structures due to drying shrinkage. The objective of this research was to determine the change in length due to loss of moisture from placement through complete drying of portland cement concrete. The drying shrinkage was determined for four different combinations of Iowa DOT structural concrete mix proportions and materials. The two mix proportions used were an Iowa DOT D57 (bridge deck mix proportions) and a water reduced modified C4 mix. Three 4"x 4"x 18" beams were made for each mix. After moist curing for three days, all beams were maintained in laboratory dry air and the length and weight were measured at 73°F ± 3°F. The temperature was cycled on alternate days from 73°F to 90°F through four months. From four months through six months, the temperature was cycled one day at 73°F and six days at 130°F. It took approximately six months for the concrete to reach a dry condition with these temperatures. The total drying shrinkage for the four mixes varied from .0106 in. to .0133 in. with an average of .0120 in. The rate of shrinkage was approximately .014% shrinkage per 1% moisture loss for all four mixes. The rate and total shrinkage for all four mixes was very similar and did not seem to depend on the type of coarse aggregate or the use of a retarder.
