This review highlights structural and biosynthetic work on a group of nitrogen-functionalised terpenes that are almost exclusively found in marine invertebrates and the animals that feed on them. The chemical functionality reviewed includes isocyanides, isothiocyanates, formamides, thiocyanates, isocyanates, and dichloroimines. The literature through mid 2003 is reviewed and there are 143 citations.

The influences of HCl, HNO3 and HF treatments of carbon on N2O and NO reduction with 20 wt% Cu-loaded activated carbon were studied. The order of activity in both N2O and NO is as follows: Cu20/AC-HNO3>Cu20/AC>Cu20/AC-HF>Cu20/AC-HCl. The same sequence was also observed for the amount of CO2 evolved during TPD experiments of supports acid for the catalyst dispersion. On the other hand, N2O exhibited a higher reaction rate than NO and a higher sensitivity to acid treatments, and the presence of gas-phase O-2 had opposite effects in N2O and NO reduction. The key role of carbon surface chemistry is examined to rationalize these findings and the relevant mechanistic and practical implications are discussed. A series of TiO2 samples with different anatase-to-rutile ratios was prepared by calcination, and the roles of the two crystallite phases of titanium(IV) oxide (TiO2) on the photocatalytic activity in oxidation of phenol in aqueous solution were studied. High dispersion of nanometer-sized anatase in the silica matrix and the possible bonding of Si-O-Ti in SiO2/TiO2 interface were found to stabilize the crystallite transformation from anatase to rutile. The temperature for this transformation was 1200 degrees C for the silica-titania (ST) sample, much higher than 700 degrees C for Degussa P25, a benchmarking photocatalyst. It is shown that samples with higher anatase-to-rutile ratios have higher activities for phenol degradation. However, the activity did not totally disappear after a complete crystallite transformation for P25 samples, indicating some activity of the rutile phase. Furthermore, the activity for the ST samples after calcination decreased significantly, even though the amount of anatase did not change much. The activity of the same samples with different anatase-to-rutile ratios is more related to the amount of the surface-adsorbed water and hydroxyl groups and surface area. The formation of rutile by calcination would reduce the surface-adsorbed water and hydroxyl groups and surface area, leading to the decrease in activity.

The modified fatty acids, (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-6,9,12-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-9,12,15-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenyloxy)acetic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)acetic acid, 3-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)]propionic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)succinic acid, N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]glycine and N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]aspartic acid, all react with soybean 15-lipoxygenase. The products were treated with triphenylphosphine to give alcohols, which were isolated using HPLC. Analysis of the alcohols using negative ion tandem electrospray mass spectrometry, and by comparison with compounds obtained by autoxidation of arachidonic acid, shows that each enzyme catalysed oxidation occurs at the omega -6 position of the substrate. In a similar fashion, it has been found that (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-6,9,12-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-9,12,15-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)acetic acid and N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8, 11.14-tetraenylthio)]propionic acid each undergoes regioselective oxidation at the carboxyl end of the polyene moiety on treatment with potato 5-lipoxygenase. Neither (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)succinic acid nor N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]aspartic acid reacts in the presence of this enzyme, while N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]glycine affords the C11' oxidation product. The alcohol derived from (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-6,9, 12-trienyloxy)acetic acid using the 15-lipoxygenase reacts at the C6' position with the 5-lipoxygenase. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Ten microsatellite loci are described in Araucaria cunninghamii, the first reported in the Araucariaceae. Eight were tested in sections Eutacta and Bunya, which diverged more than 200 MYA, and to the sister genus Agathis. Specific amplification products within the expected size range were obtained for six to eight loci in section Eutacta (depending on species), five loci in section Bunya and three. loci in Agathis. Two of the loci (CRCAc1 and CRCAc2, both GA repeats) produced specific amplification products in all taxa, with orthology confirmed by sequence analysis. The repeats were perfect in all taxa. The flanking sequences were extremely conserved, with sequence divergence of 0% to 2.0% within Araucaria species and 2.9% to 7.5% between Araucaria and Agathis. These microsatellites represent some of the most conserved microsatellite loci reported in plants. This may be due to a low evolutionary rate in Araucariaceae genome or the loci may be closely associated with highly conserved, unreported genes.

The electrochemical behaviour of propanil and related N-substituted amides (acetanilide and N,N-diphenylacetamide) was studied by cyclic and square wave voltammetry using a glassy carbon electrode. Propanil has been found to have chemical stability under the established analytical conditions and showed an oxidation peak at +1.27V versus Ag/AgCl at pH 7.5. N,N-diphenylacetamide has a higher oxidation potential than the other compounds of +1.49V versus Ag/AgCl. Acetanilide oxidation occurred at a potential similar to that of propanil, +1.24V versus Ag/AgCl. These results are in agreement with the substitution pattern of the nitrogen atom of the amide. A degradation product of propanil, 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), was also studied, and showed an oxidation peak at +0.66V versus Ag/AgCl. A simple and specific quantitative electroanalytical method is described for the analysis of propanil in commercial products that contain propanil as the active ingredient, used in the treatment of rice crops in Portugal.

Proteomics has changed the way proteins are analyzed in living systems. This approach has been applied to blood products and protein profiling has evolved in parallel with the development of techniques. The identification of proteins belonging to red blood cell, platelets or plasma was achieved at the end of the last century. Then, the questions on the applications emerged. Hence, several studies have focused on problems related to blood banking and products, such as the aging of blood products, identification of biomarkers, related diseases and the protein-protein interactions. More recently, a mass spectrometry-based proteomics approach to quality control has been applied in order to offer solutions and improve the quality of blood products. The current challenge we face is developing a closer relationship between transfusion medicine and proteomics. In this article, these issues will be approached by focusing first on the proteome identification of blood products and then on the applications and future developments within the field of proteomics and blood products.
