Qualitative petrographic study of selected clastic horizons within the Eocene section of Hole 516F has revealed the presence of abundant fine-grained lithic fragments, probably volcanic, along with coarser fragments of quartz and feldspar apparently derived from a nearby plutonic terrain. In detail, poor sorting, presence of graded bedding, and an abundance of clay suggest these are turbidite horizons locally derived from a mixed volcanic/plutonic terrain, possibly with some direct contribution from contemporary volcanic ash falls. A progressive increase in plutonic versus volcanic components with time is, however, more consistent with an erosional origin for most of this material. Unusual euhedral dark biotite is abundant in several of the lower clastic horizons; it is most easily interpreted as microphenocrysts weathered in situ out of alkalic volcanic ash. Biotite separated from Sample 516F-76-4,107-115 cm, has been dated by the K-Ar method at about 46 Ma. Alkaline volcanoes active on the Rio Grande Rise in the middle Eocene would be the most probable source of this ash and would be consistent with other evidence for potassic, alkaline volcanism along the Rio Grande Rise and at the Tristan da Cunha hot spot.

DSDP Site 516 contains a complete middle Eocene to lower Miocene interval with a well-developed Oligocene sequence that is more than 300 m thick. In this paper, the most important and characteristic benthic foraminiferal species from this interval are described and illustrated, and their quantitative and biostratigraphic distribution is given. Middle Eocene benthic assemblages, derived from pelagic intercalations in a partly turbiditic sequence, are low in diversity. Benthic assemblages of fairly high diversity occur in limestones, chalks, and oozes of the upper Eocene to lower Miocene. The consistently high rate of new species appearances at Site 516 during late Eocene and Oligocene contrasted greatly with the very slow rate of change in abyssal faunas at that time; there were no significant faunal changes at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. The assemblages are dominated by Cibicidoides (mostly C. ungerianus or C. kullenbergi) and Lenticulina. Buliminids were also important during the Eocene and early Oligocene. Faunal comparison with other Atlantic DSDP sites and drill holes in the Gulf of Mexico suggest an approximately mid-bathyal (500-1500 m) depth of deposition during late Eocene and Oligocene.

Basalts from Hole 516F, DSDP Leg 72 on the Rio Grande Rise are tholeiitic in character but differ from normal mid-ocean ridge basalts in the South Atlantic in higher concentrations of incompatible elements such as Ti, K, V, Sr, Ba, Zr, Nb, and light rare-earth elements and in lower concentrations of Mg, Cr, and Ni. They contrast with previously reported basalts from the Rio Grande Rise, which were highly alkalic in character. The Rio Grande Rise basalts from Hole 516F (age 84.5 Ma) are generally similar to basalts from the eastern end of the Walvis Ridge (80-100 Ma). It is suggested that they either originated, like the Walvis Ridge, from a mantle hot spot that is different from the present-day hot spot (Tristan da Cunha) and that has changed composition with time, or from a spreading center that was shallow and chemically influenced by the adjacent hot spot, similar to the present-day Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Azores and Tristan da Cunha.

Submarine basalts are difficult to date accurately by the potassium-argon method. Dalrymple and Moore (1968) and Dymond (1970), for example, showed that, when the conventional K-Ar method is used, pillow lavas may contain excess 40Ar. Use of the 40Ar/39Ar step-heating method has not overcome the problem, as had been hoped, and has produced some conflicting results. Ozima and Saito (1973) concluded that the excess 40Ar is retained only in high temperature sites, but Seidemann (1978) found that it could be released at all temperatures. Furthermore, addition of potassium, from seawater, to the rock after it has solidified can result in low ages (Seidemann, 1977), the opposite effect to that of excess 40Ar. Thus, apparent ages may be either greater or less than the age of extrusion. Because of this discouraging record, the present study was approached pragmatically, to investigate whether self-consistent results can be obtained by the 40Ar/39Ar step-heating method.

Changes in the vertical water mass structure of the Vema Channel during the Pliocene have been inferred from benthic foraminiferal assemblages and stable isotopic analyses from three sites of DSDP Leg 72 (South Atlantic). Faunal and isotopic results from Sites 516A and 518 suggest that a major change occurred in deep-water circulation patterns in the late Pliocene near 3.2 Ma. Benthic oxygen isotopic records from Sites 516A and 518 show a characteristic increase in d18O values near 3.2 Ma. This has been documented in numerous Pliocene isotopic records. The magnitude of the oxygen isotopic enrichment near 3.2 Ma appears to increase with water depth from an average enrichment of 0.34 per mil in Site 516A (1313 m) to an average enrichment of 0.58 per mil in Site 518 (3944 m). We suggest that this enrichment resulted partly from a change in deep-water circulation patterns which included a decrease in bottom-water temperatures. Planktonic d18O values near 3.2 Ma show no evidence of an enrichment which would be indicative of an increase in global ice volume. On the contrary, d18O values in Sites 517 and 518 become more depleted near 3.2 Ma, indicating a surface-water warming perhaps due to a change in the strength and/or position of the Brazil Current. An increase in the relative abundance of the benthic foraminifer Nuttalides umbonifera, which is associated with Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) in the modern ocean, coincides with the benthic 18O enrichment in Site 518. At 3.2 Ma, oxygen and carbon isotopic gradients between Sites 518 (3944 m) and 516A (1313 m) show a marked increase such that Site 518 becomes enriched in 18O and depleted in 13C relative to Site 516A. This enrichment in d18O is interpreted as partly representing a temperature decrease at Site 518; the depletion in d13C indicates a corrosive water mass which is high in metabolic CO2. We suggest that benthic foraminiferal and stable isotopic changes in Site 518 resulted from a pulse-like increase in the formation of AABW near 3.2 Ma. The cause of this circulation event may have been linked to global cooling and/or the final closure of the Central American Seaway.

Data from deep sea drilling, linear magnetic anomalies and bathymetric measurements together with age and morphometric characteristics of seamounts have been used to construct a paleobathymetric map of the oceans 35 million years ago. A brief analysis of these results is presented.

The amount, type, and thermal maturation of organic matter in sediments from two DSDP holes in the South Atlantic (Leg 72) were investigated. Isolated kerogens were studied by microscopy, and nonaromatic hydrocarbons were characterized by capillary gas chromatography. Organic carbon values are low in all samples and range between 0.05 and 0.21% in Hole 515B (Brazil Basin) and only between 0.02 and 0.10% in Hole 516F (Rio Grande Rise). The organic matter is predominantly terrigenous, mixed with some unicellular marine algae; it is severely oxidized in most samples. N-alkane distributions are usually dominated by long-chain wax alkanes with odd-over-even carbon number predominance; when the marine organic matter is relatively more abundant, however, significant amounts of n-alkanes are centered upon n-C17. The organic matter is not mature enough in any sample to generate appreciable amounts of hydrocarbons.
