The isotherms of adsorption of MeX2 (Me = Cu2+, Co2+; X = Cl-, Br-, ClO4-) by silica gel chemically modified with 2-mercaptoimidazole (SiMI) were studied in acetone and ethanol solutions, at 25 degrees C. Covalently attached 2-mercaptoimidazole molecule to silica gel surface adsorbs MeX2 from solvent by forming a surface complex. The metal is bonded to the surface through the nitrogen atom of attached 2-mercaptoimidazole. At low loading, the electronic and ESR spectral parameters indicated that the Cu2+ complexes are in a distorted-tetragonal symmetry field. The d-d electronic transition spectra showed that for Cu(ClO4)(2) complex, the peak of absorption did not change for any degree of metal loading and for Cl- and Br- complexes, the peak maxima shifted to higher energy with lower metal loading. The CoX2(X = Cl-, Br-, ClO4-) analogues possess a distorted-tetrahedral field.

This work describes the synthesis and characterization of 2-aminothiazole-modified silica gel (SiAT), as well as its application for preconcentration (in batch and column technique) of Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) in ethanol medium. The adsorption capacities of SiAT determined for each metal ion were (mmol g(-1)): Cu(II)=1.20, Ni(II)=1.10 and Zn(II)=0.90. In addition, results obtained in flow experiments, showed a recovery of ca. 100% of the metal ions adsorbed in a column packed with 500 mg of SiAT. The eluent was 2.0 mol L-1 HCl. The sorption-desorption of the studied metal ions made possible the development of a preconcentration method for metal ions at trace level in fuel ethanol using flame AAS for their quantification.

The ESR spectrum of CuCl2 adsorbed onto a silica gel surface chemically modified with the benzimidazole molecule showed that the surface complex has an octahedral symmetry with tetragonal distortion. The measured ESR parameters were g(parallel to) = 2.287, g(perpendicular to) = 2.062, A(parallel to) = 153 G and superhyperfine splitting A(N) = 15 G. The fit of the theoretical expressions to the experimental data was very reasonable. The effective spin orbit coupling constant for Cu2+ was reduced from its normal free ion value of lambda = -828 cm(-1) by as much as 30%. This reduction of lambda is normal in the solid state and in frozen solution complexes.

Silica gel surfaces, organofunctionalized with 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, iminosalicylaldehyde and imidazole groups were examined using the small angle X-ray scattering technique (SAXS). From the scattering intensity data it was concluded that particles have a uniform size after the coupling reaction. The chemical treatment of the silica gel leads to an attachment of the organofunctional groups on the solid-pore interface of the silica with an increase of the mean size of the solid phase and some coalescence of the pores. © 1989.

The isotherms of adsorption of CuX2 (X=Cl-, Br-, ClO- 4) by silica gel chemically modified with 2-aminothiazole were studied in acetone and EtOH solutions, at 25°C. The 2-aminothiazole molecule, covalently bond to the silica gel surface, adsorbs CuX2 from solvent by forming a surface complex. At low loading, the electronic and E.S.R. spectral parameters indicate that the Cu2+ complexes have a distorted tetragonal symmetry. The d-d eletronic transition spectra show that for ClO- 4 complex, the peak of absorption do not change for any degree of metal loading whilst for Cl- and Br- complexes, the peak maxima shift to higher energy with lower metal loading. © Elsevier Science Ltd.

Silica gel having a particle size between 0.2 and 0.05 mm and a specific surface area, S BET = 473 m 2 g -1, was chemically modified with benzimidazole. Adsorption isotherms of CuX 2 (X = Cl, Br or ClO 4) from ethanol and acetone solutions were studied at 298 K. The metal is bonded to the surface through the free nitrogen atom of the attached benzimidazole. The average number of ligands co-ordinated to the central metal ion was shown to depend on the solid surface loading by the solute. At low loading the electronic and ESR spectral parameters indicated that the copper ion is in a distorted-tetragonal symmetry field.

The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that whole living hyphal of marine fungi Aspergillus sclerotiorum CBMAI 849 and Penicillium citrinum CBMAI 1186 were immobilized on support matrices of silica gel, silica xerogel and/or chitosan. P. citrinum immobilized on chitosan catalyzed the quantitative reduction of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-ethanone (1) to the enantiomer (S)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-ethanol (3b), with excellent enantioselectivity (ee > 99%, yield = 95%). Interestingly, ketone 1 was reduced with moderate selectivity and conversion to alcohol 3b (ee = 69%, c 40%) by the free mycelium of P. citrinum. This free mycelium of P. citrinum catalyzed the production of the (R)-alcohol 3a, the antipode of the alcohol produced by the immobilized cells. P. citrinum immobilized on chitosan also catalyzed the bioreduction of 2-chloro-1-phenylethanone (2) to 2-chloro-1-phenylethanol (4a,b), but in this case without optical selectivity. These results showed that biocatalytic reduction of ketones by immobilization hyphal of marine fungi depends on the xenobiotic substrate and the support matrix used. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Silica-gel supported binam-derived prolinamides are efficient organocatalysts for the direct intramolecular and intermolecular aldol reaction under solvent-free conditions using conventional magnetic stirring. These organocatalysts in combination with benzoic acid showed similar results to those obtained under similar homogeneous reaction conditions using an organocatalyst of related structure. For the intermolecular process, the aldol products were obtained at room temperature and using only 2 equiv of the ketone with high yields, regio-, diastereo- and enantioselectivities. Under these reaction conditions, also the cross aldol reaction between aldehydes is possible. The recovered catalyst can be reused up to nine times providing similar results. More interestingly, these heterogeneous organocatalysts can be used in the intramolecular aldol reaction allowing the synthesis of the Wieland–Miescher and ketone analogues with up to 92% ee, with its reused being possible up to five times without detrimental on the obtained results.
