The discovery of an alternative route to convert poly(xylyliden tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT) into poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) using dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) has allowed the formation of ultrathin films with unprecedented control of architecture and emission properties. In this work, we show that this route may be performed with several sufonated compounds where RSO(3)(-) replaces the counter-ion (Cl(-)) of PTHT, some of which are even more efficient than DBS. Spin-coating films were produced from PTHT and azo-dye molecules, an azo-polymer and organic salts as counter-ions of PTHT. The effects of the thermal annealing step of PTHT/RSO(3)(-) films at 110 and 230 degrees C were monitored by measuring the absorption and emission spectra. The results indicate that the exchange of the counterion Cl(-) of PTHT by a linear long chain with RSO(3)(-) group is a general procedure to obtain PPV polymer at lower conversion temperature (ca. 110 degrees C) with significant increase in the emission efficiency, regardless of the chemical position and the number of sulfonate groups. With the enhanced emission caused by Congo Red and Tinopal as counter-ions, it is demonstrated that the new synthetic route is entirely generic, which may allow accurate control of conversion and emission properties. The third-order optical susceptibility and dispersion of the linear refractive index of Er(3+)-doped lead phosphate glass were measured in the wavelength range between 400 and 1940 nm by using the spectrally resolved femtosecond Maker fringes technique. The nonlinear refractive index obtained from the third-order susceptibility was found to be five times higher than that of silica, indicating that Er(3+)-doped lead phosphate glass is a potential candidate to be used as the base component for the fabrication of photonic devices. For comparison purposes, the Z-scan technique was also employed to obtain the values of the nonlinear refractive index of Er(3+)-doped lead phosphate glass at several wavelengths, and the values obtained using the two techniques agree to within 15%.

Several experiments (time-resolved Z-scan experiments based on pulsed and CW pump lasers, time-resolved divergence diagnostics) have been performed to examine and clarify the question of the converging or diverging population lensing effect occurring in a Cr(3+):Al(2)O(3) ruby laser. The dynamics of the laser far-field divergence of such a laser indeed indicated initially a diverging effect while Z-scan measurements conclude to a converging one. The origin of this discrepancy is thus analysed and elucidated here by introducing the general concept of correlation collapse between the centre and the wings of a laser beam having some clipping. Fabrication and electroluminescent properties of devices containing europium complexes of general formula [Eu(ACIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)], where ACIND, 2-acyl-1,3-indandionate ligands: and TPPO, triphenylphosphine oxide. as emitter layers are discussed. The double-layer devices based on these complexes present the following configurations: device 1: ITO/TPD/[Eu(AlND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al: device 2: ITO/TPD/[Eu(ISOV-IND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al and device 3: ITO/TPD/[Eu(BIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)]/Al, where AlND, 2-acetyl-1,3-indandionate; ISOVIND, 2-isovaleryl-1,3-indandionate; and BIND, 2-benzoyl-1,3-indandionate, respectively. These devices exhibited photo and electroluminescent emissions. An important characteristic presented by devices is that their electroluminescent (EL) spectra, in the region of (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4) transitions of Eu(3+) ion, show profiles that are different from photoluminescent (PL) ones. In addition to narrow bands arising from intraconfigurational-4f(6) transitions, devices 1 and 2 also exhibited a broad band with maximum at around 500 nm which is assigned to electrophosphorescence from the indandionate ligands. On the other hand, EL spectra of device 3 present only narrow bands from (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) transitions. [Eu(ACIND)(3)(TPPO)(2)] complexes are promising candidates to prepare efficient organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) when compared with those containing Eu(3+)-complexes of aliphatic beta-diketonate anions. Polycrystalline Eu(2+) and Dy(3+) doped barium aluminate materials, BaAl(2)O(4):Eu(2+),Dy(3+), were prepared with solid state reactions at temperatures between 700 and 1500 degrees C. The influence of the thermal treatments on the stability, homogeneity and structure as well as to the UV-excited and persistent luminescence of the materials was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, SEM imaging and infrared spectroscopies as well as by steady state luminescence spectroscopy and persistent luminescence decay curves, respectively. The IR spectra of the materials prepared at 250, 700, and 1500 degrees C follow the formation of BaAl(2)O(4) composition whereas the X-ray powder diffraction of compounds revealed how the hexagonal structure was obtained. The morphology of the materials at high temperatures indicated important aggregation due to sintering. The luminescence decay of the quite narrow Eu(2+) band at ca. 500 nm shows the presence of persistent luminescence after UV irradiation. The dopant (Eu(2+)) and co-clopant (Dy(3+)) concentrations affect the crystallinity and luminescence properties of the materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Neodymium based fluorescence presents several advantages in comparison to conventional rare earth or enzyme-substrate based fluorescence emitting sources (e.g.Tb, HRP). Based on this fact we have herein explored a Nd-based fluoroimmunoassay. We efficiently detected the presence of an oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) in human plasma a well-known marker for cardiovascular diseases, which causes around 30% of deaths worldwide. Conventional fluoroimmunoassay uses time-resolved luminescence techniques, with detection in the visible range, to eliminate the fluorescence background from the biological specimens. By using an immunoassay based on functionalized Y(2)O(3):Nd(3+) nanoparticles, where the excitation and emission processes in the Nd(3+) ion occur in the near-infrared (NIR) region, we have succeeded in eliminating the interferences from the biological fluorescence background, avoiding the use of time-resolved techniques. This yields higher emission intensity from the Nd(3+)-nanolabels and efficient detection of anti-oxidized low-density lipoproteins (anti-oxLDL) by Y(2)O(3):Nd(3+)-antibody-antigen conjugation, leading to a novel biolabeling method. An upconversion random laser (RL) operating in the ultraviolet is reported for Nd 3+ doped fluoroindate glass powder pumped at 575 nm. The RL is obtained by the resonant excitation of the Nd 3+ state 2G 7/2 followed by energy transfer among two excited ions such that one ion in the pair decays to a lower energy state and the other is promoted to state 4D 7/2 from where it decays emitting light at 381 nm. The RL threshold of 30 kW/cm 2 was determined by monitoring the photoluminescence intensity as a function of the pump laser intensity. The RL pulses have time duration of 29 ns that is 50 times smaller than the decay time of the upconversion signal when the sample is pumped with intensities below the RL laser threshold. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

With Hg-199 atoms confined in an optical lattice trap in the Lamb-Dicke regime, we obtain a spectral line at 265.6 nm for which the FWHM is similar to 15 Hz. Here we lock an ultrastable laser to this ultranarrow S-1(0) - P-3(0) clock transition and achieve a fractional frequency instability of 5.4 x 10(-15) / root tau for tau <= 400 s. The highly stable laser light used for the atom probing is derived from a 1062.6 nm fiber laser locked to an ultrastable optical cavity that exhibits a mean drift rate of -6.0 x 10(-17) s-(1) (-16.9 mHzs(-1) at 282 THz) over a six month period. A comparison between two such lasers locked to independent optical cavities shows a flicker noise limited fractional frequency instability of 4 x 10(-16) per cavity. The in situ complexation between 2,3,5,6-tetra(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (tppz) molecules and europium ions at the air-liquid interface by means of mixed 1-octadecanol Langmuir films is reported. These films were transferred to solid supports by means of the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The EDS maps attested the homogeneity of the LB films as well as the presence of the europium ions. The mixed alcohol/tppz LB film contained a larger amount of europium ions as compared to the pure octadecanol LB film. This work reports the production of a thin luminescent Eu3+ film containing europium ions using only alcohol molecules as ligands an unexpected result, since it is well known that there is an occurrence of non-radiative deactivation of excited europium by hydroxyl groups. Europium ion multiple binding sites were detected from lifetime decay measurements of these films in the presence of tppz molecules. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this dissertation, the problem of creating effective large scale Adaptive Optics (AO) systems control algorithms for the new generation of giant optical telescopes is addressed. The effectiveness of AO control algorithms is evaluated in several respects, such as computational complexity, compensation error rejection and robustness, i.e. reasonable insensitivity to the system imperfections. The results of this research are summarized as follows: 1. Robustness study of Sparse Minimum Variance Pseudo Open Loop Controller (POLC) for multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO). The AO system model that accounts for various system errors has been developed and applied to check the stability and performance of the POLC algorithm, which is one of the most promising approaches for the future AO systems control. It has been shown through numerous simulations that, despite the initial assumption that the exact system knowledge is necessary for the POLC algorithm to work, it is highly robust against various system errors. 2. Predictive Kalman Filter (KF) and Minimum Variance (MV) control algorithms for MCAO. The limiting performance of the non-dynamic Minimum Variance and dynamic KF-based phase estimation algorithms for MCAO has been evaluated by doing Monte-Carlo simulations. The validity of simple near-Markov autoregressive phase dynamics model has been tested and its adequate ability to predict the turbulence phase has been demonstrated both for single- and multiconjugate AO. It has also been shown that there is no performance improvement gained from the use of the more complicated KF approach in comparison to the much simpler MV algorithm in the case of MCAO. 3. Sparse predictive Minimum Variance control algorithm for MCAO. The temporal prediction stage has been added to the non-dynamic MV control algorithm in such a way that no additional computational burden is introduced. It has been confirmed through simulations that the use of phase prediction makes it possible to significantly reduce the system sampling rate and thus overall computational complexity while both maintaining the system stable and effectively compensating for the measurement and control latencies.

Many ecosystem models have been developed to study the ocean's biogeochemical properties, but most of these models use simple formulations to describe light penetration and spectral quality. Here, an optical model is coupled with a previously published ecosystem model that explicitly represents two phytoplankton (picoplankton and diatoms) and two zooplankton functional groups, as well as multiple nutrients and detritus. Surface ocean color fields and subsurface light fields are calculated by coupling the ecosystem model with an optical model that relates biogeochemical standing stocks with inherent optical properties (absorption, scattering); this provides input to a commercially available radiative transfer model (Ecolight). We apply this bio-optical model to the equatorial Pacific upwelling region, and find the model to be capable of reproducing many measured optical properties and key biogeochemical processes in this region. Our model results suggest that non-algal particles largely contribute to the total scattering or attenuation (> 50% at 660 nm) but have a much smaller contribution to particulate absorption (< 20% at 440 nm), while picoplankton dominate the total phytoplankton absorption (> 95% at 440 nm). These results are consistent with the field observations. In order to achieve such good agreement between data and model results, however, key model parameters, for which no field data are available, have to be constrained. Sensitivity analysis of the model results to optical parameters reveals a significant role played by colored dissolved organic matter through its influence on the quantity and quality of the ambient light. Coupling explicit optics to an ecosystem model provides advantages in generating: (1) a more accurate subsurface light-field, which is important for light sensitive biogeochemical processes such as photosynthesis and photo-oxidation, (2) additional constraints on model parameters that help to reduce uncertainties in ecosystem model simulations, and (3) model output which is comparable to basic remotely-sensed properties. In addition, the coupling of biogeochemical models and optics paves the road for future assimilation of ocean color and in-situ measured optical properties into the models.

Phase-sensitive X-ray imaging shows a high sensitivity towards electron density variations, making it well suited for imaging of soft tissue matter. However, there are still open questions about the details of the image formation process. Here, a framework for numerical simulations of phase-sensitive X-ray imaging is presented, which takes both particle- and wave-like properties of X-rays into consideration. A split approach is presented where we combine a Monte Carlo method (MC) based sample part with a wave optics simulation based propagation part, leading to a framework that takes both particle- and wave-like properties into account. The framework can be adapted to different phase-sensitive imaging methods and has been validated through comparisons with experiments for grating interferometry and propagation-based imaging. The validation of the framework shows that the combination of wave optics and MC has been successfully implemented and yields good agreement between measurements and simulations. This demonstrates that the physical processes relevant for developing a deeper understanding of scattering in the context of phase-sensitive imaging are modelled in a sufficiently accurate manner. The framework can be used for the simulation of phase-sensitive X-ray imaging, for instance for the simulation of grating interferometry or propagation-based imaging.

Traveling-wave excitation close to the speed of light implies small-angle target-irradiation. Yet, short-wavelength lasing needs large irradiation angles. Pulse-front back-tilt is considered to overcome such trade-off. Pulse-front tilt by means of compressor misalignment was found effective only if coupled with a strong front-end imaging/focusing component.
