This book presents new data on chemical and mineral compositions and on density of altered and fresh igneous rocks from key DSDP and ODP holes drilled on the following main tectonomagmatic structures of the ocean floor: 1. Mid-ocean ridges and abyssal plains and basins (DSDP Legs 37, 61, 63, 64, 65, 69, 70, 83, and 91 and ODP Legs 106, 111, 123, 129, 137, 139, 140, 148, and 169); 2. Seamounts and guyots (DSDP Legs 19, 55, and 62 and ODP Legs 143 and 144); 3. Intraplate rises (DSDP Legs 26, 33, 51, 52, 53, 72, and 74 and ODP Legs 104, 115, 120, 121, and 183); and 4. Marginal seas (DSDP Legs 19, 59, and 60 and ODP Legs 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, and 135). Study results of altered gabbro from the Southwest Indian Ridge (ODP Leg 118) and serpentinized ultramafic rocks from the Galicia margin (ODP Leg 103) are also presented. Samples were collected by the authors from the DSDP/ODP repositories, as well as during some Glomar Challenger and JOIDES Resolution legs. The book also includes descriptions of thin sections, geochemical diagrams, data on secondary mineral assemblages, and recalculated results of chemical analyses with corrections for rock density. Atomic content of each element can be quantified in grams per standard volume (g/1000 cm**3). The suite of results can be used to estimate mass balance, but parts of the data need additional work, which depends on locating fresh analogs of altered rocks studied here. Results of quantitative estimation of element mobility in recovered sections of the upper oceanic crust as a whole are shown for certain cases: Hole 504B (Costa Rica Rift) and Holes 856H, 857C, and 857D (Middle Valley, Juan de Fuca Ridge).

Petrographic and geochemical study of basalts in the Kerguelen Plateau basement revealed changes in composition and character of volcanism during development of this tectonovolcanic structure. The Kerguelen Plateau is one of the largest intraplate rises in the World Ocean. It started to form about 120 Ma ago. Age of basalts and overlying sediments shows that plateau formation was in the northwest direction. Basalts of the Kerguelen Plateau basement are products of tholeiitic melts in terms of geochemistry, but differ from mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB). They are enriched in incompatible trace elements and rare earth elements (REE) relative to MORB, and degree of enrichment varies in basalts from different segments of the plateau. Composition of basalts does not directly depend on their age. Specific features of plateau magmatism are commonly explained in terms of a long-living deep magma plume, which variously interacted with a depleted upper mantle source at different stages of plateau formation. However, taking into account block morphology and deep structure of the plateau, one can suggest that plateau volcanism was initiated by a large fault. As the volcanism prograded to the northwest, depth of fault penetration into the mantle changed. Composition of basalts in the plateau basement was also governed by formation depth of primary melts.

An almost complete Upper Cretaceous sedimentary sequence recently recovered on the Kerguelen Plateau (southern Indian Ocean) during ODP Leg 183 was analysed for planktonic foraminifera in order to refine and integrate the zonal schemes previously proposed for the Southern Ocean area. Detailed biostratigraphic analysis carried out on holes 1135A, 1136A and 1138A (poleward of 50°S palaeolatitude during Late Cretaceous time) has allowed recognition of low and mid-high latitude bioevents, useful for correlation across latitudes, in addition to known Austral bioevents. The low latitude biozonation can be applied to Turonian sediments, because of the occurrence of Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica, which marks the boundary between Whiteinella archaeocretacea and Helvetoglobotruncana helvetica zones. The base of the Whiteinella archeocretacea Zone falls within the uppermost Cenomanian-Turonian black shale level in Hole 1138A. The stratigraphic interval from upper Turonian to uppermost Santonian can be resolved using bioevents recognized in the mid-high latitude sections. They are, in stratigraphic order: the last occurrence of Falsotruncana maslakovae in the Coniacian, the first occurrence of Heterohelix papula at the Coniacian/Santonian boundary, the extinction of the marginotruncanids in the late Santonian, and the first occurrence of Globigerinelloides impensus in the latest (?) Santonian. The remainder of the Late Cretaceous fits rather well in the Austral zonal scheme, except that Globigerinelloides impensus exhibits a stratigraphic range in agreement with its record at the mid-high latitude sections and extends further downwards than previously recorded at southern sites. Therefore, despite the poor recovery in certain intervals and the presence of several hiatuses of local and regional importance as revealed by correlation among holes, a more detailed zonal scheme has been obtained (mainly for the less resolved Turonian-Santonian interval). Remarks on some species often overlooked in literature are also provided.

Recent drilling on the Kerguelen Plateau (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 183) has provided a unique and exciting high latitude record of palaeoceanographic change during the Cenomanian-Turonian in the Southern Ocean. The benthic foraminiferal succession at Site 1138 records the evolution of the Kerguelen Plateau from a subaerially exposed platform in the Cenomanian to a bathyal, pelagic environment in the early Turonian, following a major transgressive pulse and increased thermal subsidence of the Kerguelen Plateau, which led to a sea-level rise of possibly several hundred metres. Diversified benthic foraminiferal assemblages indicate an upper bathyal, mesotrophic setting after the peak of the transgression. The assemblages exhibit strong similarities to temperate, shelf and slope assemblages in the Northern Hemisphere. This bimodal distribution reflects the existence of open oceanic gateways and a dynamic trans-hemispheric global circulation. Equatorial assemblages are characterized by a low-diversity, high carbon flux biofacies. Assemblages from Alaska demonstrate high organic productivity and low oxygen conditions and the prevalence of elevated temperatures on the flooded shelf of the North Slope. Our results show that the distribution of upper bathyal benthic foraminifera was strongly modulated by carbon flux and oxygenation fluctuations, and not by physical migration barriers.

The Mössbauer technique has been used to study the nuclear hyperfine interactions and lifetimes in W182 (2+ state) and W183 (3/2- and 5/2- states) with the following results: g(5/2-)/g(2+) = 1.40 ± 0.04; g(3/2- = -0.07 ± 0.07; Q(5/2-)/Q(2+) = 0.94 ± 0.04; T1/2(3/2-) = 0.184 ± 0.005 nsec; T1/2(5/2-) >̰ 0.7 nsec. These quantities are discussed in terms of a rotation-particle interaction in W183 due to Coriolis coupling. From the measured quantities and additional information on γ-ray transition intensities magnetic single-particle matrix elements are derived. It is inferred from these that the two effective g-factors, resulting from the Nilsson-model calculation of the single-particle matrix elements for the spin operators ŝz and ŝ+, are not equal, consistent with a proposal of Bochnacki and Ogaza.
The internal magnetic fields at the tungsten nucleus were determined for substitutional solid solutions of tungsten in iron, cobalt, and nickel. With g(2+) = 0.24 the results are: |Heff(W-Fe)| = 715 ± 10 kG; |Heff(W-Co)| = 360 ± 10 kG; |Heff(W-Ni)| = 90 ± 25 kG. The electric field gradients at the tungsten nucleus were determined for WS2 and WO3. With Q(2+) = -1.81b the results are: for WS2, eq = -(1.86 ± 0.05) 1018 V/cm2; for WO3, eq = (1.54 ± 0.04) 1018 V/cm2 and ƞ = 0.63 ± 0.02.
The 5/2- state of Pt195 has also been studied with the Mössbauer technique, and the g-factor of this state has been determined to be -0.41 ± 0.03. The following magnetic fields at the Pt nucleus were found: in an Fe lattice, 1.19 ± 0.04 MG; in a Co lattice, 0.86 ± 0.03 MG; and in a Ni lattice, 0.36 ± 0.04 MG. Isomeric shifts have been detected in a number of compounds and alloys and have been interpreted to imply that the mean square radius of the Pt195 nucleus in the first-excited state is smaller than in the ground state.
