Although there has been much interest in the chemistry of bimetallic transition metal complexes, compounds with naphthalene or anthracene as bridging ligands are still rare. In this article, we describe the synthesis of the homodinuclear iron complexes [Cp*Fe(μ-η4:η4-L)FeCp*] (1: L = C10H8, 2: L = C14H10; Cp* = η5-C5Me5). The complexes were characterized by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR, UV/Vis, and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and their molecular structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. Both complexes are diamagnetic as a result of the strong magnetic coupling of the 17e FeI centers mediated by the polyarene bridge. An analysisof the redox behavior of 1 and 2 by cyclic voltammetry andUV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry shows that the complexes can be oxidized reversibly in two well-separated one-electron steps to the monocation [Cp*Fe(μ-L)FeCp*]+ and the dication [Cp*Fe(μ-L)FeCp*]2+. The reduction to the monoanion [Cp*Fe(μ-L)FeCp*]– was also observed.

The thermoelectric behaviour of the transition-metal disulphides n-type NiCr2S4 and p-type CuCrS2 is investigated. Materials prepared by high-temperature reaction were consolidated using cold-pressing and sintering, hot-pressing (HP) in graphite dies or spark-plasma sintering (SPS) in tungsten carbide dies. The consolidation conditions have a marked influence on the electrical transport properties. In addition to the effect on sample density, altering the consolidation conditions results in changes to the sample composition, including the formation of impurity phases. Maximum room-temperature power factors are 0.18 mW m-1 K-2 and 0.09 mW m-1 K-2 for NiCr2S4 and CuCrS2, respectively. Thermal conductivities of ca. 1.4 and 1.2 W m-1 K-1 lead to figures of merit of 0.024 and 0.023 for NiCr2S4 and CuCrS2, respectively.

FeM2X4 spinels, where M is a transition metal and X is oxygen or sulfur, are candidate materials for spin filters, one of the key devices in spintronics. We present here a computational study of the inversion thermodynamics and the electronic structure of these (thio)spinels for M = Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, using calculations based on the density functional theory with on-site Hubbard corrections (DFT+U). The analysis of the configurational free energies shows that different behaviour is expected for the equilibrium cation distributions in these structures: FeCr2X4 and FeMn2S4 are fully normal, FeNi2X4 and FeCo2S4 are intermediate, and FeCo2O4 and FeMn2O4 are fully inverted. We have analyzed the role played by the size of the ions and by the crystal field stabilization effects in determining the equilibrium inversion degree. We also discuss how the electronic and magnetic structure of these spinels is modified by the degree of inversion, assuming that this could be varied from the equilibrium value. We have obtained electronic densities of states for the completely normal and completely inverse cation distribution of each compound. FeCr2X4, FeMn2X4, FeCo2O4 and FeNi2O4 are half-metals in the ferrimagnetic state when Fe is in tetrahedral positions. When M is filling the tetrahedral positions, the Cr-containing compounds and FeMn2O4 are half-metallic systems, while the Co and Ni spinels are insulators. The Co and Ni sulfide counterparts are metallic for any inversion degree together with the inverse FeMn2S4. Our calculations suggest that the spin filtering properties of the FeM2X4 (thio)spinels could be modified via the control of the cation distribution through variations in the synthesis conditions.

The skutterudites YbxFe2Ni2Sb12 (0≤x≤0.4) have been prepared by solid-state reaction and characterised by powder X-ray diffraction. The compounds crystallise in the cubic space group Im View the MathML source3¯ (a≈9.1 Å) with Yb atoms partially filling the voids in the skutterudite framework. A neutron time-of-flight diffraction experiment for Fe2Ni2Sb12 confirms the disorder of Fe and Ni atoms on the transition-metal site. Electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity measurements indicate that the thermoelectric performance of the skutterudites shows a marked dependence on the Yb content. Magnetic measurements over the temperature range 2≤T/K≤300 show paramagnetic behaviour for all compounds. Decomposition studies under an oxidising atmosphere at elevated temperatures have also been carried out by thermogravimetric analysis.

The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Fe and Ti atomic wires and the complete covering when adsorbed on graphene are presented through ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. The most stable configurations are investigated for Fe and Ti in different concentrations adsorbed on the graphene surface, and the corresponding binding energies are calculated. The results show a tendency of the Ti atoms to cover uniformly the graphene surface, whereas the Fe atoms form clusters. The adsorption of the transition metal on the graphene surface changes significantly the electronic density of states near the graphene Fermi region. In all arrangements studied, a charge transfer is observed from the adsorbed species to the graphene surface due to the high hybridizations between the systems.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from diazobenzene Sudan III have been investigated using surface potential measurements as a function of number of layers and deposition pressures, with the surface potential data being related to molecular dipole moments obtained from theoretical electronic structure calculations. The surface potential increased with the number of layers for SIII LB films, and then tended to saturate. Results from density functional theory (DIFT) and UV-vis spectroscopy indicated that the increase is due to addition of layers with oriented molecular dipoles, with the saturation tendency being attributed to a decrease in the amount of material deposited in each layer. The surface potential increased with the surface pressure used for deposition, probably owing to a higher contribution from the vertical component of the dipole moment as a closer molecular packing, which is associated with decreasing conformational entropy, was reached. Zinc oxide is a widely used white inorganic pigment. Transition metal ions are used as chromophores and originate the ceramic pigments group. In this context, ZnO particles doped with Co, Fe, and V were synthesized by the polymeric precursors method, Pechini method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) techniques were used to accurately characterize the distinct thermal events occurring during synthesis. The TG and DSC results revealed a series of decomposition temperatures due to different exothermal events, which were identified as H(2)O elimination, organic compounds degradation and phase formation. The samples were structurally characterized by X-Ray diffractometry revealing the formation of single phase, corresponding to the crystalline matrix of ZnO. The samples were optically characterized by diffuse reflectance measurements and colorimetric coordinates L*, a*, b* were calculated for the pigment powders. The pigment powders presented a variety of colors ranging from white (ZnO), green (Zn(0.97)Co(0.03)O), yellow (Zn(0.97)Fe(0.03)O), and beige (Zn(0.97)V(0.03)O).

The alkaline earth tricyanomethanides Mg(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O, Ca(tcm)(2), Sr(tcm)(2) - H2O and Ba(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O were prepared from aqueous solutions of the respective chlorides and silver tricyanomethanide. Their IR spectra and thermal behavior are described. The crystal structures of Ca(tcm)(2) and Ba(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of Ca(tcm)(2) is of the type found for several transition metal tricyanomethanides [1], containing two independent interpenetrating networks. Ba(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O has a unique crystal structure corresponding to a three-dimensional coordination polymer with nine fold coordinated Ba atoms connected by water molecules and tricyanomethanide anions.

Multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory (CASSCF//CASPT2) and quadruple-zeta ANO-RCC basis sets were employed to investigate the ground and low-lying electronic states of MoB and MoB(+). Spectroscopic constants, potential energy curves, wavefunctions, Mulliken population analyses, and ionization energies are given. The ground state of MoB is of X(6)Pi symmetry (R(e) = 1.968 angstrom, omega(e) = 664 cm(-1), and mu = 2.7 D), giving rise to a Omega = 7/2 ground state after including spin-orbit coupling. For MoB(+), the ground state is computed to be of X(7)Sigma(+) symmetry (R(e) = 2.224 angstrom, omega(e) = 141 cm(-1), and mu = 1.2 D), with an adiabatic ionization energy of 7.19 eV and a vertical one of 7.53 eV. The electronic structure of the lowest-lying electronic states of W(2) were investigated at the CASPT2 level. The ground state is a X(1)Sigma(+)(g) state, followed by the a(3)Delta(u), b(3)Sigma(+)(u) and A(1)Delta(u) electronic states. Seven low-lying Omega-states were computed: (1)0(g)(+), (2)3(u), (3)2(u), (4)1(u), (5)0(u)(-), (6)1(u), and (7)2(u), with the ground state corresponding to the (1)0(g)(+)(X(1)Sigma(+)(g)) state. Comparison with the other VIB transition metal group dimers indicates a common pattern of electronic structure and spectroscopic properties. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The adsorption of pyridine (py) on Fe, Co, Ni and Ag electrodes was studied using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) to gain insight into the nature of the adsorbed species. The wavenumber values and relative intensities of the SERS bands were compared to the normal Raman spectrum of the chemically prepared transition metal complexes. Raman spectra of model clusters M(4)(py) (four metal atoms bonded to one py moiety) and M(4)(alpha-pyridil) where M = Ag, Fe, Co or Ni were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) and used to interpret the experimental SERS results. The similarity of the calculated M(4)(py) spectra with the experimental SERS spectra confirm the molecular adsorption of py on the surface of the metallic electrodes. All these results exclude the formation of adsorbed alpha-pyridil species, as suggested previously. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory, with the inclusion of relativistic effects and spin-orbit Coupling, was employed to investigate the nature of the ground and low-lying Lambda-S and Omega states of the TcN molecule. Spectroscopic constants, effective bond order, and potential energy curves for 13 low-lying Lambda-S states and 5 Omega states are given, The computed ground state of TcN is of Omega = 3 symmetry (R(e) = 1.605 angstrom and omega(e) = 1085 cm(-1)), originating mainly from the (3)Delta Lambda-S ground state. This result is contrasted with the nature of the ground state for other VIIB transtion-metal mononitrides, including X(3)Sigma(-) symmetry for MnN and Omega = 0(+) symmetry for ReN, derived also from a X(3)Sigma(-) state.
Spectroscopic investigation of the interactions between emeraldine base polyaniline and Eu(III) ions
Resumo:
The interactions of emeraldine base form of polyaniline (EB-PANI) and Eu(III) ions in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) solution and in films have been investigated by UV-vis-NIR, resonance Raman. luminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. These spectroscopic techniques allowed to characterize quinone and semiquinone segments in the polymeric chains. and the oxidation state of europium ions in Eu-PANI samples. For high values of Eu(III)/N molar ratio (24/1) the presence of a weak polaronic absorption band at 980 nm in UV-vis-NIR spectrum and the observation of bands at 1330 and 1378 (nu(center dot)(C-N+)) cm(-1) due to emeraldine salt in the Raman spectrum at 1064 nm indicate a low doping degree. Oxidation of EB-PANI to pernigraniline base (PB-PANI) occurs in diluted solutions. The experimental data showed that the solvent plays an important role on the nature of formed species. The narrow EPR signal at g = 2.006 (line width 8G) confirms the presence of PANI radical cations in Eu-PANI film. The absence of broad signal characteristic of Eu(II) in EPR spectrum suggested that europium ions are primarily at Eu(III) oxidation state. The luminescence spectra of Eu-PANI film presented emission bands at 405 and 418 nm assigned to PANI moieties and bands at 594,615 and 701 nm assigned to (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) (J = 1, 2 and 4, respectively) transitions of Eu(III). EPR and photoluminescence data confirm that europium ions are mainly in Eu(III) oxidation state in Eu(III)/PANI films. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
