A new synthetic route towards the mixed-metal cluster [OS2Ru(CO)(12)] is described together with the syntheses of its PPh3 and iPr-AcPy (iPr-AcPy = 2-acetylpyridine-N-isopropylimine) derivatives. The molecular structures of the novel clusters [Os2Ru(CO)(11)(PPh3)] and [Os2Ru(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)] were determined on the basis of crystalline solid solutions of the Os2Ru and corresponding Os-3 species. The structures reveal that coordination of the Lewis bases occurs exclusively at the ruthenium site of [Os2Ru(CO)(12)], which is in agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations on several structural isomers of these compounds. According to the time-dependent DFT results, the lowest optically accessible excited state of [Os2Ru(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)] has a prevailing sigma(Ru-Os-2)pi*(iPr-AcPy) character, with a partial sigma sigma*(Ru-Os-2) contribution. In weakly coordinating 2-chlorobutane, the excited state has a lifetime tau = 10.4 +/- 1.2 ps and produces biradicals considerably faster than observed for [Os-3(CO)10(iPr-AcPy) (tau = 25.3 +/- 0.7ps)]. In coordinating acetonitrile, the excited state of [Os2Ru(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)] decays mono-exponentially with a lifetime tau = 2.1 +/- 0.2 ps. In contrast to [Os-3(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)] that forms biradicals as the main primary photoproduct even in strongly coordinating solvents, zwitterion formation from the solvated lowest excited state is observed for the heterometallic cluster. This is concluded from time-resolved absorption studies in the microsecond time domain. Due to the lower tendency of the coordinatively unsaturated Ru+(CO)(2)(iPr-AcPy-/0) moiety to bind a Lewis base, the heteronuclear biradical and zwitterionic photoproducts live significantly shorter than their triosmium counterparts. The influence of the weaker Os-2-Ru(iPr-AcPy) bond on the redox reactivity is clearly reflected in very reactive radical anions formed upon electrochemical reduction of [Os2Ru(CO)(10)(iPr-AcPy)]. The dimer [-OS(CO)(4)-Os(CO)(4)-Ru(CO)(2)(iPr-AcPy)](2)(2-) is the only IR-detectable intermediate reduction product. The dinuclear complex [Os-2(CO)(8)](2-) and insoluble [Ru(CO)(2)(iPr-AcPy)](n), are the ultimate reduction products, proving fragmentation of the OS2Ru core.

A mononuclear complex [CuL] (1), a binuclear complex [Cu2LCl2(H2O)] (2), a trinuclear complex [Cu3L2](ClO4)(2) (3) involving o-phenylenediamine and salicylaldehyde and another binuclear complex of a tridentate ligand (H2L1) [Cu2L (2) (1) ](CH3COO)(2) (4) involving o-phenylenediamine and diacetylmonoxime have been synthesized, where H2L = N,N'-o-phenylenebis(salicylideneimine) and H2L1 = 3-(2-aminophenylimino)butan-2-one oxime. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectral and magnetic studies. The binuclear complex (2) was characterized structurally where the two Cu(II) centers are connected via an oxygen-bridged arrangement.

Few attempts have been made to improve the activity of plant compounds with low antimicrobial efficacy. (+)-Catechin, a weak antimicrobial tea flavanol, was combined with putative adjuncts and tested against different species of bacteria. Copper(II) sulphate enhanced (+)-catechin activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa but not Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis or Escherichia coli. Attempts to raise the activity of (+)-catechin against two unresponsive species, S. aureus and E. coli, with iron(II) sulphate, iron(III) chloride, and vitamin C, showed that iron(II) enhanced (+)-catechin against S. aureus, but not E. coli; neither iron(III) nor combined iron(II) and copper(II), enhanced (+)-catechin activity against either species. Vitamin C enhanced copper(II) containing combinations against both species in the absence of iron(II). Catalase or EDTA added to active samples removed viability effects suggesting that active mixtures had produced H2O2via the action of added metal(II) ions. H2O2 generation by (+)-catechin plus copper(II) mixtures and copper(II) alone could account for the principal effect of bacterial growth inhibition following 30 minute exposures as well as the antimicrobial effect of (+)-catechin–iron(II) against S. aureus. These novel findings about a weak antimicrobial flavanol contrast with previous knowledge of more active flavanols with transition metal combinations. Weak antimicrobial compounds like (+)-catechin within enhancement mixtures may therefore be used as efficacious agents. (+)-Catechin may provide a means of lowering copper(II) or iron(II) contents in certain crop protection and other products.

The preparation, crystal structures and magnetic properties of two new isoelectronic and isomorphous formate-and nitrite-bridged 1D chains of Mn(III)-salen complexes, [Mn(salen)(HCOO)](n) (1) and [Mn(salen)(NO2)](n) (2), where salen is the dianion of N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane, are presented. The structures show that the salen ligand coordinates to the four equatorial sites of the metal ion and the formate or nitrite ions coordinate to the axial positions to bridge the Mn(III)-salen units through a syn-anti mu-1 kappa O:2 kappa O' coordination mode. Such a bridging mode is unprecedented in Mn(III) for formate and in any transition metal ion for nitrite. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes 1 and 2 indicate the presence of ferromagnetic exchange interactions with J values of 0.0607 cm(-1) (for 1) and 0.0883 cm(-1) (for 2). The ac measurements indicate negligible frequency dependence for 1 whereas compound 2 exhibits a decrease of chi(ac)' and a concomitant increase of chi(ac)'' on elevating frequency around 2 K. This finding is an indication of slow magnetization reversal characteristic of single-chain magnets or spin-glasses. The mu-nitrito-1 kappa O:2 kappa O' bridge seems to be a potentially superior magnetic coupler to the formate bridge for the construction of single-molecule/-chain magnets as its coupling constant is greater and the chi(ac)' and chi(ac)'' show frequency dependence.

Although there has been much interest in the chemistry of bimetallic transition metal complexes, compounds with naphthalene or anthracene as bridging ligands are still rare. In this article, we describe the synthesis of the homodinuclear iron complexes [Cp*Fe(μ-η4:η4-L)FeCp*] (1: L = C10H8, 2: L = C14H10; Cp* = η5-C5Me5). The complexes were characterized by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR, UV/Vis, and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and their molecular structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. Both complexes are diamagnetic as a result of the strong magnetic coupling of the 17e FeI centers mediated by the polyarene bridge. An analysisof the redox behavior of 1 and 2 by cyclic voltammetry andUV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry shows that the complexes can be oxidized reversibly in two well-separated one-electron steps to the monocation [Cp*Fe(μ-L)FeCp*]+ and the dication [Cp*Fe(μ-L)FeCp*]2+. The reduction to the monoanion [Cp*Fe(μ-L)FeCp*]– was also observed.

The thermoelectric behaviour of the transition-metal disulphides n-type NiCr2S4 and p-type CuCrS2 is investigated. Materials prepared by high-temperature reaction were consolidated using cold-pressing and sintering, hot-pressing (HP) in graphite dies or spark-plasma sintering (SPS) in tungsten carbide dies. The consolidation conditions have a marked influence on the electrical transport properties. In addition to the effect on sample density, altering the consolidation conditions results in changes to the sample composition, including the formation of impurity phases. Maximum room-temperature power factors are 0.18 mW m-1 K-2 and 0.09 mW m-1 K-2 for NiCr2S4 and CuCrS2, respectively. Thermal conductivities of ca. 1.4 and 1.2 W m-1 K-1 lead to figures of merit of 0.024 and 0.023 for NiCr2S4 and CuCrS2, respectively.

FeM2X4 spinels, where M is a transition metal and X is oxygen or sulfur, are candidate materials for spin filters, one of the key devices in spintronics. We present here a computational study of the inversion thermodynamics and the electronic structure of these (thio)spinels for M = Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, using calculations based on the density functional theory with on-site Hubbard corrections (DFT+U). The analysis of the configurational free energies shows that different behaviour is expected for the equilibrium cation distributions in these structures: FeCr2X4 and FeMn2S4 are fully normal, FeNi2X4 and FeCo2S4 are intermediate, and FeCo2O4 and FeMn2O4 are fully inverted. We have analyzed the role played by the size of the ions and by the crystal field stabilization effects in determining the equilibrium inversion degree. We also discuss how the electronic and magnetic structure of these spinels is modified by the degree of inversion, assuming that this could be varied from the equilibrium value. We have obtained electronic densities of states for the completely normal and completely inverse cation distribution of each compound. FeCr2X4, FeMn2X4, FeCo2O4 and FeNi2O4 are half-metals in the ferrimagnetic state when Fe is in tetrahedral positions. When M is filling the tetrahedral positions, the Cr-containing compounds and FeMn2O4 are half-metallic systems, while the Co and Ni spinels are insulators. The Co and Ni sulfide counterparts are metallic for any inversion degree together with the inverse FeMn2S4. Our calculations suggest that the spin filtering properties of the FeM2X4 (thio)spinels could be modified via the control of the cation distribution through variations in the synthesis conditions.

The skutterudites YbxFe2Ni2Sb12 (0≤x≤0.4) have been prepared by solid-state reaction and characterised by powder X-ray diffraction. The compounds crystallise in the cubic space group Im View the MathML source3¯ (a≈9.1 Å) with Yb atoms partially filling the voids in the skutterudite framework. A neutron time-of-flight diffraction experiment for Fe2Ni2Sb12 confirms the disorder of Fe and Ni atoms on the transition-metal site. Electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity measurements indicate that the thermoelectric performance of the skutterudites shows a marked dependence on the Yb content. Magnetic measurements over the temperature range 2≤T/K≤300 show paramagnetic behaviour for all compounds. Decomposition studies under an oxidising atmosphere at elevated temperatures have also been carried out by thermogravimetric analysis.

Nanostrucured europium oxide and hydroxide films were obtained by pulsed Nd:YAG (532 nm) laser ablation of a europium metallic target, in the presence of a 1 mbar helium buffer atmosphere. Both the produced film and the ambient plasma were characterized. The plasma was monitored by an electrostatic probe, for plume expansion in vacuum or in the presence of the buffer atmosphere. The time evolution of the ion saturation current was obtained for several probe to substrate distances. The results show the splitting of the plume into two velocity groups, being the lower velocity profile associated with metal cluster formation within the plume. The films were obtained in the presence of helium atmosphere, for several target-to-substrate distances. They were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy, for as-deposited and 600 degrees C treated-in-air samples. The results show that the as-deposited samples are amorphous and have chemical composition compatible with europium hydroxide. The thermally treated samples show x-ray diffraction peaks of Eu(2)O(3), with chemical composition showing excess oxygen. Film nanostructuring was shown to be strongly correlated with cluster formation, as shown by velocity splitting in probe current versus time plots. (C) 2010 American Vacuum Society. The structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Fe and Ti atomic wires and the complete covering when adsorbed on graphene are presented through ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. The most stable configurations are investigated for Fe and Ti in different concentrations adsorbed on the graphene surface, and the corresponding binding energies are calculated. The results show a tendency of the Ti atoms to cover uniformly the graphene surface, whereas the Fe atoms form clusters. The adsorption of the transition metal on the graphene surface changes significantly the electronic density of states near the graphene Fermi region. In all arrangements studied, a charge transfer is observed from the adsorbed species to the graphene surface due to the high hybridizations between the systems.

One pair of reactants, Cu(hfac)(2) = M and the hinge-flexible radical ligand 5-(3-N-tert-butyl-N-aminoxylphenyl)pyrimidine (3PPN = L), yields a diverse set of five coordination complexes: a cyclic loop M(2)L(1) dimer; a 1:1 cocrystal between an M(2)L(2) loop and an ML(2) fragment; a ID chain of M(2)L(2) loops linked by M; two 2D M(3)L(2) networks of (M-L)(n) chains crosslinked by M with different repeat length pitches; a 3D M(3)L(2) network of M(2)L(2) loops cross-linking (M-L)(n)-type chains with connectivity different from those in the 2D networks. Most of the higher dimensional complexes exhibit reversible, temperature-dependent spin-state conversion of high-temperature paramagnetic states to lower magnetic moment states having antiferromagnetic exchange within Cu-ON bonds upon cooling, with accompanying bond contraction. The 3D complex also exhibited antiferromagnetic exchange between Cu(II) ions linked in chains through pyrimidine rings.

5-(4-(N-tert-Butyl-N-aminoxylphenyl)) pyrimidine (RL, 4PPN) forms crystallographically isostructural and isomorphic pseudo-octahedral M(RL)(2)(hfac)(2) complexes with M(hfac)(2), M = Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, and Mn. Multiple close contacts occur between sites of significant spin density of the organic radical units. Magnetic behavior of the Zn, Cu, Ni, Co complexes appears to involve multiple exchange pathways, with multiple close crystallographic contacts between sites that EPR (of 4PPN) indicates to have observable spin density. Powder EPR spectra at room temperature and low temperature are reported for each complex. Near room temperature, the magnetic moments of the complexes are roughly equal to those expected by a sum of non-interacting moments (two radicals plus ion). As temperature decreases, AFM exchange interactions become evident in all of the complexes. The closest fits to the magnetic data were found for a 1-D Heisenberg AFM chain model in the Zn(II) complex (J/k = (-)7 K), and for three-spin RL-M-RL exchange in the other complexes (J/k = (-)26 K, (-)3 K, (-) 6 K, for Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) complexes, respectively). Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from diazobenzene Sudan III have been investigated using surface potential measurements as a function of number of layers and deposition pressures, with the surface potential data being related to molecular dipole moments obtained from theoretical electronic structure calculations. The surface potential increased with the number of layers for SIII LB films, and then tended to saturate. Results from density functional theory (DIFT) and UV-vis spectroscopy indicated that the increase is due to addition of layers with oriented molecular dipoles, with the saturation tendency being attributed to a decrease in the amount of material deposited in each layer. The surface potential increased with the surface pressure used for deposition, probably owing to a higher contribution from the vertical component of the dipole moment as a closer molecular packing, which is associated with decreasing conformational entropy, was reached. Zinc oxide is a widely used white inorganic pigment. Transition metal ions are used as chromophores and originate the ceramic pigments group. In this context, ZnO particles doped with Co, Fe, and V were synthesized by the polymeric precursors method, Pechini method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) techniques were used to accurately characterize the distinct thermal events occurring during synthesis. The TG and DSC results revealed a series of decomposition temperatures due to different exothermal events, which were identified as H(2)O elimination, organic compounds degradation and phase formation. The samples were structurally characterized by X-Ray diffractometry revealing the formation of single phase, corresponding to the crystalline matrix of ZnO. The samples were optically characterized by diffuse reflectance measurements and colorimetric coordinates L*, a*, b* were calculated for the pigment powders. The pigment powders presented a variety of colors ranging from white (ZnO), green (Zn(0.97)Co(0.03)O), yellow (Zn(0.97)Fe(0.03)O), and beige (Zn(0.97)V(0.03)O).
