Present the measurement of a rare Standard Model processes, pp →W±γγ for the leptonic decays of the W±. The measurement is made with 19.4 fb−1 of 8 TeV data collected in 2012 by the CMS experiment. The measured cross section is consistent with the Standard Model prediction and has a significance of 2.9σ. Limits are placed on dimension-8 Effective Field Theories of anomalous Quartic Gauge Couplings. The analysis has particularly sensitivity to the fT,0 coupling and a 95% confidence limit is placed at −35.9 < fT,0/Λ4< 36.7 TeV−4. Studies of the pp →Zγγ process are also presented. The Zγγ signal is in strict agreement with the Standard Model and has a significance of 5.9σ.

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It consists of a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level and a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The "hybrid" detection mode combines the information from the two subsystems. We describe the determination of the hybrid exposure for events observed by the fluorescence telescopes in coincidence with at least one water-Cherenkov detector of the surface array. A detailed knowledge of the time dependence of the detection operations is crucial for an accurate evaluation of the exposure. We discuss the relevance of monitoring data collected during operations, such as the status of the fluorescence detector, background light and atmospheric conditions, that are used in both simulation and reconstruction. The Pierre Auger Observatory is a hybrid detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It combines a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level together with a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The fluorescence detector comprises 24 large telescopes specialized for measuring the nitrogen fluorescence caused by charged particles of cosmic ray air showers. In this paper we describe the components of the fluorescence detector including its optical system, the design of the camera, the electronics, and the systems for relative and absolute calibration. We also discuss the operation and the monitoring of the detector. Finally, we evaluate the detector performance and precision of shower reconstructions. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

To exploit the full potential of radio measurements of cosmic-ray air showers at MHz frequencies, a detector timing synchronization within 1 ns is needed. Large distributed radio detector arrays such as the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) rely on timing via the Global Positioning System (GPS) for the synchronization of individual detector station clocks. Unfortunately, GPS timing is expected to have an accuracy no better than about 5 ns. In practice, in particular in AERA, the GPS clocks exhibit drifts on the order of tens of ns. We developed a technique to correct for the GPS drifts, and an independent method is used to cross-check that indeed we reach a nanosecond-scale timing accuracy by this correction. First, we operate a "beacon transmitter" which emits defined sine waves detected by AERA antennas recorded within the physics data. The relative phasing of these sine waves can be used to correct for GPS clock drifts. In addition to this, we observe radio pulses emitted by commercial airplanes, the position of which we determine in real time from Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcasts intercepted with a software-defined radio. From the known source location and the measured arrival times of the pulses we determine relative timing offsets between radio detector stations. We demonstrate with a combined analysis that the two methods give a consistent timing calibration with an accuracy of 2 ns or better. Consequently, the beacon method alone can be used in the future to continuously determine and correct for GPS clock drifts in each individual event measured by AERA.

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a long-baseline accelerator experiment designed to make a significant contribution to the study of neutrino oscillations with unprecedented sensitivity. The main goal of DUNE is the determination of the neutrino mass ordering and the leptonic CP violation phase, key parameters of the three-neutrino flavor mixing that have yet to be determined. An important component of the DUNE Near Detector complex is the System for on-Axis Neutrino Detection (SAND) apparatus, which will include GRAIN (GRanular Argon for Interactions of Neutrinos), a novel liquid Argon detector aimed at imaging neutrino interactions using only scintillation light. For this purpose, an innovative optical readout system based on Coded Aperture Masks is investigated. This dissertation aims to demonstrate the feasibility of reconstructing particle tracks and the topology of CCQE (Charged Current Quasi Elastic) neutrino events in GRAIN with such a technique. To this end, the development and implementation of a reconstruction algorithm based on Maximum Likelihood Expectation Maximization was carried out to directly obtain a three-dimensional distribution proportional to the energy deposited by charged particles crossing the LAr volume. This study includes the evaluation of the design of several camera configurations and the simulation of a multi-camera optical system in GRAIN.

In this thesis, a search for same-sign top quark pairs produced according to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) is presented. The analysis is carried out within the ATLAS Collaboration using collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, collected by the ATLAS detector during the Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $140$ fb$^{-1}$. Three SMEFT operators are considered in the analysis, namely $\mathcal{O}_{RR}$, $\mathcal{O}_{LR}^{(1)}$, and $\mathcal{O}_{LR}^{(8)}$. The signal associated to same-sign top pairs is searched in the dilepton channel, with the top quarks decaying via $t \longrightarrow W^+ b \longrightarrow \ell^+ \nu b$, leading to a final state signature composed of a pair of high-transverse momentum same-sign leptons and $b$-jets. Deep Neural Networks are employed in the analysis to enhance sensitivity to the different SMEFT operators and to perform signal-background discrimination. This is the first result of the ATLAS Collaboration concerning the search for same-sign top quark pairs production in proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, in the framework of the SMEFT.

This thesis presents a search for a sterile right-handed neutrino $N$ produced in $D_s$ meson decays, using proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The data set used for the analysis, the B-Parking data set, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $41.7\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ and was collected during the 2018 data-taking period. The analysis is targeting the $D_s^+\rightarrow N(\rightarrow\mu^{\pm}\pi^{\mp})\mu^{+}$ decays, where the final state muons can have the same electric charge allowing for a lepton flavor violating decay. To separate signal from background, a cut-based analysis is optimized using requirements on the sterile neutrino vertex displacement, muon and pion impact parameter, and impact parameter significance. The expected limit on the active-sterile neutrino mixing matrix parameter $|V_{\mu}|^2$ is extracted by performing a fit of the $\mu\pi$ invariant mass spectrum for two sterile neutrino mass hypotheses, 1.0 and 1.5 GeV. The analysis is currently blinded, following the internal CMS review process. The expected limit ranges between approximately $10^{-4}$ for a 1.0 GeV neutrino to $7\times10^{-5}$ for a 1.5 GeV neutrino. This is competitive with the best existing results from collider experiments over the same mass range.

DUNE is a next-generation long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. It aims to measure the still unknown $ \delta_{CP} $ violation phase and the sign of $ \Delta m_{13}^2 $, which defines the neutrino mass ordering. DUNE will exploit a Far Detector composed of four multi-kiloton LArTPCs, and a Near Detector (ND) complex located close to the neutrino source at Fermilab. The SAND detector at the ND complex is designed to perform on-axis beam monitoring, constrain uncertainties in the oscillation analysis and perform precision neutrino physics measurements. SAND includes a 0.6 T super-conductive magnet, an electromagnetic calorimeter, a 1-ton liquid Argon detector - GRAIN - and a modular, low-density straw tube target tracker system. GRAIN is an innovative LAr detector where neutrino interactions can be reconstructed using only the LAr scintillation light imaged by an optical system based on Coded Aperture masks and lenses - a novel approach never used before in particle physics applications. In this thesis, a first evaluation of GRAIN track reconstruction and calorimetric capabilities was obtained with an optical system based on Coded Aperture cameras. A simulation of $\nu_\mu + Ar$ interactions with the energy spectrum expected at the future Fermilab Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) was performed. The performance of SAND was evaluated, combining the information provided by all its sub-detectors, on the selection of $ \nu_\mu + Ar \to \mu^- + p + X $ sample and on the neutrino energy reconstruction.

The Short Baseline Neutrino Program at Fermilab aims to confirm or definitely rule out the existence of sterile neutrinos at the eV mass scale. The program will perform the most sensitive search in both the nue appearance and numu disappearance channels along the Booster Neutrino Beamline. The far detector, ICARUS-T600, is a high-granularity Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber located at 600 m from the Booster neutrino source and at shallow depth, thus exposed to a large flux of cosmic particles. Additionally, ICARUS is located 6 degrees off axis with respect to the Neutrino beam from the Main Injector. This thesis presents the construction, installation and commissioning of the ICARUS Cosmic Ray Tagger system, providing a 4 pi coverage of the active liquid argon volume. By exploiting only the precise nanosecond scale synchronization of the cosmic tagger and the PMT optical flashes it is possible to determine if an event was likely triggered by a cosmic particle. The results show that using the Top Cosmic Ray Tagger alone a conservative rejection larger than 65% of the cosmic induced background can be achieved. Additionally, by requiring the absence of hits in the whole cosmic tagger system it is possible to perform a pre-selection of contained neutrino events ahead of the full event reconstruction.
