The electronic absorption spectrum of fac[Mn(CO)(3)(phen)imH](+), fac-1 in CH(2)Cl(2) is characterized by a strong absorption band at 378 nm (epsilon(max) = 3200 mol(-1) L cm(-1)). On the basis of quantum mechanical calculations, the visible absorption band has been assigned to ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LLCT, im -> phen) and metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT, Mn -> phen) charge transfer transition. When fac-1 in CH(2)Cl(2) is irradiated with 350 nm continuous light, the absorption features are gradually shifted to represent those of the meridional complex mer-[Mn(CO)(3)(phen)imH](+), mer-1 (lambda(max) = 556 nm). The net photoreaction under these conditions is a photoisomerization, although, the presence of the long-lived radical species was also detected by (1)H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. 355 nm continuous photolysis of fac-1 in CH(3)CN solution also gives the long-lived intermediate which is readly trapped by metylviologen (MV(2+)) giving rise to the formation of the one-electron reduced methyl viologen (MV(center dot+)). The UV-vis spectra monitored during the slow (45 min) thermal back reaction exhibited isosbestic conversion at 426 nm. On the basis of spectroscopic techniques and quantum mechanical calculations, the role of the radicals produced is analyzed.

In this work, we describe the characterization of the complex [Fe(tpy-NH2)(2)](PF6)(2) (tpy-NH2 = bis[4`-(3-aminophenyl)-2, 2`:6`,2 ``-terpyridine]. The complex was oxidatively electropolymerized on glassy.-carbon electrodes in CH3CN/0.1 M tetraethylammonium perchlorate (TEAP) to generate polymer films that exhibit reversible oxidative electrochemical behavior in a wide potential range (0.0-1.6 V), as well as high conductivity and stability/durability. In situ spectrocyclic voltammetry of this modified electrode was carried out on a photodiode array spectrophotometer attached to a potentiostat, which provided UV-Vis absorption spectra of the redox species during the potential sweep. We determined charge transport parameters as a function of time and thickness of the modified electrode, and the results showed that poly-[[Fe(tpy-NH2)(2)](2+)](n) can be made to exhibit three regimes of charge transport behavior by manipulation of the film thickness and the experimental time-scale. Morphological characterization of the film was provided by atomic force microscopy. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper we present some result on sol-gel derived silica-hafnia systems. In particular we focus on fabrication, morphological and spectroscopic assessment of Er(3+)-activated thin films. Two examples of silica-hafnia-derived waveguiding glass ceramics, prepared by top-down and bottom-up techniques are reported, and the main optical properties are discussed. Finally, some properties of activated microspherical resonators, having a silica core, obtained by melting the end of a telecom fiber, coated with an Er(3+)-doped 70SiO(2)-30HfO(2) film, are presented. The 4-carboxyphenyl-appended macrocyclic ligand trans-6,13-dimethyl-6-((4-carboxybenzyl)amino)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6-amine (HL10) has been synthesised and complexed with Co-III. The mononuclear complexes [Co(HL10)(CN)](2+) and [CoL10(OH)](+) have been prepared and the crystal structures of their perchlorate salts are presented, where the ligand is bound in a pentadentate mode in each case while the 4-carboxybenzyl-substituted pendent amine remains free from the metal. The cyano-bridged dinuclear complex [CoL10-mu-NC-Fe(CN)(5)](2-) was also prepared and chemisorbed on titania-coated ITO conducting glass. The adsorbed complex is electrochemically active and cyclic voltammetry of the modified ITO working electrode in both water and MeCN solution was undertaken with simultaneous optical spectroscopy. This experiment demonstrates that reversible electrochemical oxidation of the Fe-II centre is coupled with rapid changes in the optical absorbance of the film.

CTX is a rare lipid-storage disease. Novel MRS findings from 3 patients, using a short TE, were the presence of lipid peaks at 0.9 and 1.3 ppm in the depth of the cerebellar hemisphere; this might represent an additional marker of disease that is CNS-specific and noninvasive. A decrease in NAA concentration was also detected and attributed to neuroaxonal damage. One patient presented an increase in mlns concentration, pointing to gliosis and astrocytic proliferation.

Changes in molecular motion in blends of PEO-PVPh have been studied using measurements of C-13 T-1 rho relaxation times. C-13 T-1 rho relaxation has been confirmed as arising from spin-lattice interactions by observation of the variation in T-1 rho with rf field strength and temperature. In the pure homopolymers a minimum in T-1 rho is observed at ca. 50 K above the glass transition temperatures detected by DSC. After blending, the temperature of the minimum in T-1 rho for PEO increased, while that for PVPh decreased, however, the minima, which correspond to the temperatures where the average correlation times for reorientation are close to 3.1 mu s, are separated by 45 K (in a 45% PEO-PVPh blend). These phenomena are explained in terms of the local nature of T-1 rho measurements. The motions of the individual homopolymer chains are only partially coupled in the blend. A short T-1 rho has been observed for protonated aromatic carbons, and assigned to phenyl rings undergoing large-angle oscillatory motion, The effects of blending, and temperature, on the proportion of rings undergoing oscillatory motion are analyzed.

The spatial and temporal evolution of a depleted atomic distribution created by laser enhanced ionisation (LEI) was employed to determine both a diffusion coefficient for sodium (Na) and an electron (e(-)) and sodium ion recombination rate coefficient in an analytical air-C2H2 flame. A depleted distribution of neutral sodium atoms was produced in a flame by ionising approximately 80% of the irradiated sodium atoms in a well defined region using a two step LEI excitation scheme. Following depletion by ionisation, planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) images of the depleted region recorded the diffusion and decay of the depleted Na distribution for different depletion-probe delays. From measurements of the diffused width of the distribution, an accurate diffusion coefficient D = (1.19 +/- 0.03) x 10(-3) m(2) s(-1) for Na was determined in teh burnt gases of the flame. Measurements of the integrated fluorescence intensity in the depleted region for different depletion-probe delays were related to an increase in atomic sodium concentration caused by electron-ion recombination. At high concentrations (greater than or equal to 50 mu g ml(-1)), where the electron and ion concentrations in the depleted region were assumed equal, a recombination rate coefficient of 4.2 x 10(-9) cm(3) s(-1) was calculated. We analyze the properties of light beams carrying phase singularities, or optical vortices. The transformations of topological charge during free-space propagation of a light wave, which is a combination of a Gaussian beam and a multiple charged optical vortex within a Gaussian envelope, are studied both in theory and experiment. We revise the existing knowledge about topological charge conservation, and demonstrate possible scenarios where additional vortices appear or annihilate during free propagation of such a combined beam. Coaxial interference of optical vortices is also analyzed, and the general rule for angular-momentum density distribution in a combined beam is established. We show that, in spite of any variation in the number of vortices in a combined beam, the total angular momentum is constant during the propagation. [S1050-2947(97)09910-1].

The present study aims at the use of Raman spectroscopy in the quantification of unsaturated fats in fat-containing foods, compared to the information available in the Nutritional Table, to obtain a non-destructive optical quantification of unsaturation. Raman spectra of edible oil, margarine, mayonnaise, hydrogenated fat, and butter were obtained with a near-infrared Raman spectrometer (830nm). By analyzing selected bands in the regions of 1750, 1660, 1440, 1300, and 1260cm-1, the amount of total and unsaturated fat of samples of oil, margarine, and mayonnaise were correlated with the information displayed in the Nutritional Table. The amount of unsaturated trans fat in selected samples was correlated to the Raman shift of 1660cm-1. Dispersive Raman spectroscopy was shown to be effective in quantifying the unsaturated fats in oil, margarine, and mayonnaise, and trans fat in hydrogenated oils and butter.

We assessed the repair of transverse, 3-mm wide bone gaps created at the distal radius in 28 dogs that were randomly divided into two 14-animal groups; one was the control group and the other received a daily, 20-min application of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound for 100 days. Sequential radiographs, histomorphometrics, bone fluorescent histology and bone vascularity assessments found that all animals from both groups obtained a stage of hypertrophic-type nonunion with fibrocartilage tissue formation throughout the region of osteotomy. However, treated animals exhibited areas of endochondral ossification within the fibrocartilage region. There was no difference in type of vascularity or the newly formed bone process obtained by tetracycline labeling. Application of low-intensity ultrasound was not capable of significantly changing the reparative process and it may not be sufficiently powerful to overcome a combination of local deleterious effects on bone healing, created by gapping, excessive motion and periosteal resection. Incremental laser-heating analyses of supergene cryptomelane clusters extracted from three distinct weathering profiles from the Mary Valley region, southeast Queensland, Australia, yield reproducible and well-defined plateau ages ranging from 346 +/- 15 to 291 +/- 14 ka (2 a). Precipitation of supergene cryptomelane in this period implies that relative humid climate prevailed in southeast Queensland from 340 to 290 ha, a result consistent with oxygen isotope analyses of marine sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Site 820 and with regional pollen and spore records. These results, the first report on the precise Ar-40/Ar-39 dating of Quaternary supergene cryptomelane, indicate that Ar-40/Ar-39 analysis of pedogenic minerals provides a reliable geochronometer for the study of Quaternary surficial processes useful in the study of soil formation rates, continental paleoclimates, and archaeological sites devoid of datable volcanic minerals.

Raman spectroscopy has been used to investigate the structure of the molybdenum cofactor in DMSO reductase from Rhodobacter capsulatus. Three oxidized forms of the enzyme, designated 'redox cycled', 'as prepared', and DMSORmodD, have been studied using 752 nm laser excitation. In addition, two reduced forms of DMSO reductase, prepared either anaerobically using DMS or using dithionite, have been characterized. The 'redox cycled' form has a single band in the Mo=O stretching region at 865 cm(-1) consistent with other studies. This oxo ligand is found to be exchangeable directly with (DMSO)-O-18 or by redox cycling. Furthermore, deuteration experiments demonstrate that the oxo ligand in the oxidized enzyme has some hydroxo character, which is ascribed to a hydrogen bonding interaction with Trp 116. There is also evidence from the labeling studies for a modified dithiolene sulfur atom, which could be present as a sulfoxide. In addition to the 865 cm(-1) band, an extra band at 818 cm(-1) is observed in the Mo=O stretching region of the 'as prepared' enzyme which is not present in the 'redox cycled' enzyme. Based on the spectra of unlabeled and labeled DMS reduced enzyme, the band at 818 cm(-1) is assigned to the S=O stretch of a coordinated DMSO molecule. The DMSORmodD form, identified by its characteristic Raman spectrum, is also present in the 'as prepared' enzyme preparation but not after redox cycling. The complex mixture of forms identified in the 'as prepared' enzyme reveals a substantial degree of active site heterogeneity in DMSO reductase.

A series of crown ether appended macrocyclic amines has been prepared comprising benzo-12-crown-4, benzo-15-crown-5, or benzo-18-crown-6 attached to a diamino-substituted cyclam. The Co-III complexes of these three receptors have been prepared and characterized spectroscopically and structurally. Crystal structures of each receptor in complex with an alkali metal ion and structures of the benzo-12-crown-4 and benzo-15-crown-5-receptors without guest ions are reported. 2D NMR and molecular mechanics modeling have been used to examine conformational variations upon guest ion complexation. Addition of cations to these receptors results in an appreciable anodic shift in the Co-III:II 11 redox potential, even in aqueous solution, but little cation selectivity is observed. Evidence for complex formation has been corroborated by Na-23 and Li-7 NMR spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry.
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A3, a novel RNA trafficking response element-binding protein
Resumo:
The cis-acting response element, A2RE, which is sufficient for cytoplasmic mRNA trafficking in oligodendrocytes, binds a small group of rat brain proteins. Predominant among these is heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) A2, a trans-acting factor for cytoplasmic trafficking of RNAs bearing A2RE-like sequences. We have now identified the other A2RE-binding proteins as hnRNP A1/A1(B), hnRNP B1, and four isoforms of hnRNP A3. The rat and human hnRNP A3 cDNAs have been sequenced, revealing the existence of alternatively spliced mRNAs. In Western blotting, 38-, 39-, 41 -, and 41.5-kDa components were all recognized by antibodies against a peptide in the glycine-rich region of hnRNP A3, but only the 41- and 41.5-kDa bands bound antibodies to a 15-residue N-terminal peptide encoded by an alternatively spliced part of exon 1. The identities of these four proteins were verified by Edman sequencing and mass spectral analysis of tryptic fragments generated from electrophoretically separated bands. Sequence-specific binding of bacterially expressed hnRNP A3 to A2RE has been demonstrated by biosensor and UV cross-linking electrophoretic mobility shift assays. Mutational analysis and confocal microscopy data support the hypothesis that the hnRNP A3 isoforms have a role in cytoplasmic trafficking of RNA.

Radical formation in ultem following gamma-radiolysis has been reassessed, and the G(R*) values at different temperatures have been determined by ESR spectroscopy. The radical assignment and radical reactivity have been re-examined by photobleaching and thermal annealing studies. Photobleachable radical anions were found to comprise approximate to40% of the total number of radicals formed on radiolysis at 77 K. Spectral subtraction methods, ESR spectral simulations, measurement of g-values and the hyperfine splitting constants were used to identify the other radical intermediates. The principal chain scission radicals are formed due to scission of the main-chain at (i) the ether linkage, (ii) the isopropylidene group and (iii) the imide ring in the main chain. The side chain methyl groups of the isopropylidine units also lose hydrogen to form methylene radicals. The five-line spectrum observed to decay in the temperature range 370-430 K, which has not been assigned previously, has been identified as being characteristic of a di-substituted benzyl radical.
