Recently, sub-wavelength-pitch stacked double-gate metal nanotip arrays have been proposed to realize high current, high brightness electron bunches for ultrabright cathodes for x-ray free-electron laser applications. With the proposed device structure, ultrafast field emission of photoexcited electrons is efficiently driven by vertical incident near infrared laser pulses, via near field coupling of the surface plasmon polariton resonance of the gate electrodes with the nanotip apex. In this work, in order to gain insight in the underlying physical processes, the authors report detailed numerical studies of the proposed device. The results indicate the importance of the interaction of the double-layer surface plasmon polariton, the position of the nanotip, as well as the incident angle of the near infrared laser pulses.

We study the coupling of non-linear supersymmetry to supergravity. The goldstino nilpotent superfield of global supersymmetry coupled to supergravity is described by a geometric action of the chiral curvature superfield R subject to the constraint (R−λ)2=0 with an appropriate constant λ. This constraint can be found as the decoupling limit of the scalar partner of the goldstino in a class of f(R) supergravity theories.

The purpose of this article is to extend the organizational development diagnostics repertoire by advancing an approach that surfaces organizational identity beliefs through the elicitation of complex, multimodal metaphors by organizational members. We illustrate the use of such "Type IV" metaphors in a postmerger context, in which individuals sought to make sense of the implications of the merger process for the identity of their organization. This approach contributes to both constructive and discursive new organizational development approaches; and offers a multimodal way of researching organizational identity that goes beyond the dominant, mainly textual modality.

Two cruises were carried out in the summer and winter of 1998 to study coupled physical-chemical-biological processes in the South China Sea and their effects on phytoplankton stock and production. The results clearly show that the seasonal distributions of phytoplankton were closely related to the coupled processes driven by the East Asian Monsoon. Summer southwesterly monsoon induced upwelling along the China and Vietnam coasts. Several mesoscale cyclonic cold eddies and anticyclonic warm pools were identified in both seasons. In the summer, the upwelling and cold eddies, both associated with rich nutrients, low dissolved oxygen ( DO), high chlorophyll a (Chl a) and primary production ( PP), were found in the areas off the coast of central Vietnam, southeast of Hainan Island and north of the Sunda shelf, whereas in the winter they form a cold trough over the deep basin aligning from southwest to northeast. The warm pools with poor nutrients, high DO, low Chl a, and PP were found in the areas southeast of Vietnam, east of Hainan, and west of Luzon during the summer, and a northwestward warm jet from the Sulu Sea with properties similar to the warm pools was encountered during the winter. The phytoplankton stock and primary production were lower in summer due to nutrient depletion near the surface, particularly PO4. This phosphorus depletion resulted in phytoplankton species succession from diatoms to dinoflagellates and cyanophytes. A strong subsurface Chl a maximum, dominated by photosynthetic picoplankton, was found to contribute significantly to phytoplankton stocks and production.

This thesis presents a numerical study of reaction and diffusion phenomena in wall-coated heat-exchanger microreactors. Specifically, the interactions between an endothermic and exothermic catalyst layer separated by an impermeable wall is studied to understand the inherent behavior of the system. Two modeling approaches are presented, the first under the assumption of a constant thermal gradient and neglecting heat of reaction and the second considering both catalyst layers and reaction heat. Both studies found that thicker, more thermally insulating catalyst layers increase the effectiveness of the exothermic reaction by allowing for accumulation of reaction heat while thinner catalyst layers for the endothermic catalyst allow for direct access of the reactant to higher wall temperatures.

To better understand the mechanisms of how the human prostacyclin receptor (1P) mediates vasodilation and platelet anti-aggregation through Gs protein coupling, a strategy integrating multiple approaches including high resolution NMR experiments, synthetic peptide, fluorescence spectroscopy, molecular modeling, and recombinant protein was developed and used to characterize the structure/function relationship of important segments and residues of the IP receptor and the α-subunit of the Gs protein (Gαs). The first (iLP1) and third (iLP3) intracellular loops of the IP receptor, as well as the Gαs C-terminal domain, relevant to the Gs-mediated IP receptor signaling, were first identified by observation of the effects of the mini gene-expressed corresponding protein segments in HEK293 cells which co-expressed the receptor and Gαs. Evidence of the IP iLP1 domain interacted with the Gαs C-terminal domain was observed by fluorescence and NMR spectroscopic studies using a constrained synthetic peptide, which mimicked the IP iLP1 domain, and the synthetic peptide, which mimicked Gαs C-terminal domain. The solution structural models and the peptide-peptide interaction of the two synthetic protein segments were determined by high resolution NMR spectroscopy. The important residues in the corresponding domains of the IP receptor and the Gαs predicted by NMR chemical shift mapping were used to guide the identification of their protein-protein interaction in cells. A profile of the residues Arg42 - Ala48 of the IP iLP1 domain and the three residues Glu392 ∼ Leu394 of the Gαs C-terminal domain involved in the IP/Gs protein coupling were confirmed by recombinant proteins. The data revealed an intriguing speculation on the mechanisms of how the signal of the ligand-activated IP receptor is transmitted to the Gs protein in regulating vascular functions and homeostasis, and also provided substantial insights into other prostanoid receptor signaling. ^
